For several years The North Face Endurance Challenge has been a point of reference between races to enthusiasts, followers and cultivators of trail running and ultra distance races around the world.

The Imbabura province was the landing runway for the Ecuador Endurance Challenge. This past June 30th more than 650 athletes gather at the start line to run their distances.

Desde hace varios años The North Face Endurance Challenge se ha vuelto un punto de referencia en cuanto a carreras para todos los apasionados, seguidores y cultores del Trail Running y las carreras de ultra distancia alrededor del mundo. Por su alto nivel de organización y los parajes increíbles que se pueden encontrar durante centenares de kilómetros.

La provincia de Imbabura fue la pista de aterrizaje para el Endurance Challenge en Ecuador, donde el pasado 30 de junio, más de 650 atletas se dieron cita en la línea de largada en las diferentes distancias del evento.

La carrera arrancó el viernes 28, cuando comenzaron a llegar de a poco desde varios países suramericanos, todos los participantes de la prueba. En carpas y rodeados de un hermoso paisaje, disfrutaron de una serie de eventos previos a la carrera así como de la tradicional cena la noche del sábado. El lago San Pablo fue fiel acompañante para los corredores a lo largo de los 80kms en el caso de la prueba elite, que conto con 90 participantes, dispuestos a entregarlo todo no sólo por una medalla, sino por un puesto, un espacio en la gloria.

Sin importar los pocos días de aclimatación, el brasileño Iazaldir Feitoza tuvo piernas y mente para recorrer los 80 km en 8:06’38”hrs a pesar de haber perdido el rumbo -previamente marcado con cintas y spray de diferentes colores según la ruta- por falta de iluminación en su frontal. Junto a los ecuatorianos, atletas de Brasil, Argentina, Chile, Estados Unidos, Alemania, Colombia y Venezuela siguieron atravesando la meta. Para poder validar su carrera, tuvieron que pasar por 10 puntos de control a lo largo de todo el recorrido.

The race started on friday June 28th, when the contestants started arriving from their home countries. They stayed in tents and enjoyed a traditional dinner on saturday, surrounded by an amazing landscape. The San Pablo lake was a faithful companion for the ninety 80Km runners on the Elite Race, who gave everything in their body not just for a medal but a podium and a place in glory.

Despite the few days of acclimatization, Iazaldir Feitoza from Brazil, had enough leg and mind power to run the 80Km in 8:06’38”hrs, after getting lost at some point of the route – previosly marked with different color ribbons and spray depending on the distances – because of lack of light on his headlamp. Together with the Ecuadoreans, athletes from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, USA, Germany, Colombia and Venezuela crossed the finish line. In order to validate the race, they passed through 10 control points along the route.

La región de Imbabura se caracteriza por un clima fresco y nubosidad constante, que se convirtió en un gran aliado para los corredores, ya que la deshidratación tarda más en llegar en estas condiciones. De igual forma los participantes contaron en todo momento con puntos de control y de apoyo para abastecerse de suficiente bebida y comida para poder terminar sin problemas esta exigente prueba.

Los 90 corredores participantes de la categoría de 80 km largaron desde las instalaciones del Club Náutico, en el lago San Pablo, en Otavalo, a las 04:00 a.m. Dos horas después, desde el mismo sitio salieron los 110 competidores de los 50 kilómetros. Sportime, empresa organizadora de la prueba, presento cuatro categorías: 10, 21, 50 y 80 km. Cada una diseñada por tramos sencillos, moderados y difíciles en cuanto a la exigencia técnica del terreno.

The Imbabura region is known for the cool weather and constant clouds, those were great allies for the runners because dehydration delays on theese conditions. Every contestant counted with the control points and water all race long, so they could complete without problem this tough test.

The 90 runners who ran the 80Kms. Started from the Nautical Club at the San Pablo lake, in Otavalo, at 04:00am. Two hours later the 50Km runners started their race. The organizing company Sportime, presented four categories: 10, 21, 50 and 80Km. Each one designed on easy, moderate and hard terrain depending on the category.

El desarrollo de esta carrera en Ecuador ha sido un gran paso en la evolución de esta disciplina, la cual, a pesar de no ser considerada innovadora en cuanto a lo que representa el hecho de caminar, trotar o correr en senderos agrestes de montaña y en diferentes alturas, lo que ha hecho de la misma algo especial y original es su versatilidad electiva de distancias y sus impresionantes escenarios naturales, donde Suramérica tiene mucho que mostrar al mundo.

The makign of this race in Ecuador has been a great step on the evolution of this discipline that has been considered not innovator. This event make of walking and running on mountain trails something special. With its different distances and natural scenarios, South America has very much to show.

Padapue TepuiTierra de SueñosLand of Dreams

Todo se inicia en una expresión de la mente que busca una forma de materializar algo, en nuestro caso es toda una energía motivadora que te envuelve, donde los sueños, los deseos de escalada y las ganas de estar en las montañas convergen para ejecutar una acción positiva.

En el sur de Venezuela reinan los tepuyes, montañas muy conocidas y poco visitadas, donde la gran mayoría de ellas aún no conocen la visita del hombre. Por muy costoso que sean dichas logísticas, es el mejor terreno para vivir una singular aventura donde el contacto con la naturaleza es vital. Existen muchas formas de expresar tu sentimiento hacia las montañas, existen pensamientos muy transparentes que tienen un lugar y significado importante en cómo percibimos a las montañas, algunas personas las consideran como el lugar donde moran los dioses, lugares que deben permanecer sin ser visitados; otros los consideramos los mejores lugares para vivir un reto o cualquier actividad donde la montaña y tú conviven para lograr un objetivo, donde no cabe la idea de alguna prohibición, donde te desconectas de la rutina, de las energías citadinas y te encuentras contigo mismo.

Everything starts with an expression of the mind that searchs for a way to materialize something, in our case is a motivating energy that envolve us, where dreams, climbing desires and the urge of being in the mountains get together to execute a positive action.

Tepuyes reign the south of Venezuela, very well known mountains but not so much visited, most of them haven’t been explored by men. Despite the economic cost of a trip to a tepuy, is the best terrain to live a singular adventure in wich the contact with nature is vital. There are many ways to express your feelings for the mountains, very clear thoughts take place and important meaning about how we feel the mountains, some people consider them places where the gods live, places that shouldn’t be visited, other consider them the best places to live a challenge where you and the land coexist to achive an objective, where there are no prohibition, where you disconnect from routine, city vibes and find yourself.

Padapue Tepui Tierra de SueñosLand of Dreams

Siguiendo con nuestro sentimiento de escalar tepuyes, nos dispusimos en esta oportunidad visitar la zona este del Auyantepuy, el cual alberga una cadena de tepuyes que aún no conocen la visita del hombre a pie. Tal es el caso de los Tepuyes Hermanos, compuestos por dos montañas que se parecen mucho la una a la otra, una de ellas se llama Amaruay Tepui, el cual registró su primer acercamiento a pie hasta su cumbre en los últimos diez años, dejando a su hermano: El Padapue Tepui sin ser visitado, éste fue nuestro objetivo.

Nuestro equipo estaba conformado por Carola Pérez, Daniel Mora, Alfredo Rangel, Ricardo Vélez (Geólogo), Daniel Mamopulakos (Camarógrafo), Wojciech Wandzel (Fotógrafo) y yo. Empezamos en Caracas, desde donde hicimos los contactos necesarios y compramos todos los insumos para nuestra aventura de un mes. Con todo listo el 17 de Abril, afrontamos en nuestros vehículos unos 770 kilómetros de carretera hasta La Paragua en el Estado Bolívar, donde nos esperaba un avión Antonov que nos trasladaría junto con todos nuestros equipos hasta la comunidad indígena de Kamarata; allí nos esperaba nuestro amigo Santos Ugarte y sus familiares con quienes hicimos la travesía por el río Akanan hasta Iwanamerú, ubicado muy cerca de la comunidad indígena de Campo Carrao.

Continuing with our feeling of climbing tepuys, this time we visited the east zone of Auyantepuy (home of Angel Falls), where there’s a chain of tepuys that haven’t been hiked or climbed, that’s the case of the Tepuyes Hermanos (Brother Tepuys), formed by two twin mountains. One of them, the Amaruay Tepui, was hiked to the top in the past ten years leaving his brother: The Padapue Tepui without a visit, that was our objective.

Our team was formed by Carola Pérez, Daniel Mora, Alfredo Rangel, Ricardo Vélez, Daniel Mamopulakos (Camera-man), Wojciech Wandzel (Photographer) and myself. We started in Caracas, where we made all the needed contacts and buy all the supplies for our one-month adventure. On April 17th 2012, with everything ready we traveled 770Km. to La Paragua on Bolívar State, were am Antonov plane was waiting for us to take us to the native town of Kamarata; There was our friend Santos Ugarte, and his family with who we took a boat ride on the Akanan river all the way to Iwanamerú, located near the little town of Campo Carrao.

Iwanamerú es uno de esos sitios donde cualquiera quisiera quedarse a vivir, justo al lado del río Akanan, con una vista impresionante hacia el Auyan y el Amaruay Tepui, este lugar es una parada obligada si vas en travesía hacia Canaima o a la base del Salto Ángel. Aquí en Iwanamerú nos establecimos para arreglar toda la logística que nos venía por delante, que también incluía una reunión con el capitán de la comunidad de Campo Carrao y algunos de sus habitantes, la cual se cristalizó y fue muy positiva, ellos nos trasmitieron sus intenciones e impresiones sobre la actividad turística de la zona dándonos así el permiso de acceso al Padapue.

Continuaba nuestro movimiento, formamos un equipo más grande junto a nuestros amigos locales con quienes avanzaríamos con toda nuestra carga hacia la montaña, un total de trece personas se sumaron a nuestra caminata de acercamiento.

Mientras nos acercábamos al Padapue disfrutamos de vistas panorámicas que nunca olvidaremos, después de nuestra travesía por río, caminamos por una sabana donde el Auyan, el Amaruay, el Padapue y el Aparamán resguardaban todos nuestros francos de vistas, era todo un espectáculo, estábamos rodeados de tepuyes.

Iwanamerú is one of those places you’ll like to stay forever. Just right next to the Akanan river, a spectacular view of the Auyantepuy and the Amaruay Tepui, this place is a mandatory stop if you are heading to Canaima or the Angel Falls. In this place we settled to organize all of our gear and had a talk with the captain of the Campo Carrao community and some of the villagers, it was a very positive meating, they told us about their impression about turistic activities in the zone and gave us permission to access the Padapue Tepui.

Our journey continued, we gathered a bigger team with our local friends that would help us with our load, 13 people joined us in our walk to the base of the wall.

We got some great views while we were getting closer to the Padapue, after our boat ride, we walked through a sabana protected by the Auyan, Amaruay, Padapue and Apamarán Tepuy, that was just amazing, we were surrounded by tepuys.

Ya estábamos más cerca de la montaña, nos establecimos en “Cambai” un campamento donde termina la sabana y empieza la selva hasta el Padapue, a partir de aquí todo iba a ser nuevo para todos, tendríamos que asentar nuestro próximo campamento lo más cercano a la pared con las condiciones mínimas para establecernos por varios días.

Fue así, cuando el 21 de abril junto a nuestros amigos locales los hermanos Willy y José Palacios llegamos a la pared del Padapue, una pared impresionante, con una cortina constante de agua que rociaba toda la base de la pared según la decisión del viento. La base de la pared nos hablaba, donde terminaba la selva, empezaba una corta vegetación hasta la pared, era como un corta fuego de aproximadamente unos 8 o 10 metros, lo que demostraba el movimiento continuo del tepui con lanzamientos inesperados de rocas al vacío.

Después de establecer nuestro campamento base a unos 20 minutos de la pared, nos dispusimos a iniciar nuestra escalada. La pared nos mostraba su lado rudo, muy limpia, con muchos exteriores, con muy pocos sistemas de fisuras que seguir y una sección final que chupaba todo el rocio que desplegaba el copete vegetal del tepui. Casi toda la escalada fue en artificial, después de un primer largo muy bonito y expuesto llegamos a una repisa donde establecimos el campamento vivac donde viviríamos mientras escalábamos, el segundo largo fue escalar por el único sistema de fisuras claro de la pared, su primera parte muy fracturada nos regaló algunos momentos de tensión.

We were closer to the mountain, so we stayed in “Cambai”, a camp located between the sabana and the jungle that leads to the Padapue, from that moment on everything was going to be new for us, we would have to set our next camp as closer as we could to the wall, with minimum supplies for a few days.

It was then, on April 21st, that we got to Padapue’s wall with our local friends Willy and José Palacios, it was an impressive wall, it had a constant waterfall. The wall was talking to us, where the jungle ended, a short vegetation started, it was like a 10 meter fire line, that reminded us of the continuous

movement of the tepuy and the unexpected falling rocks.

After setting our base camp 20 minutes away from the wall, we started climbing. The wall was showing us its rough side, very clean and flat, lots of exteriors, very few fissure systems to follow and a final section the catched all the dew from the top of the tepuy. Almost all the climbing was artificial, after a very nice and exposed first pitch we setted up a vivac camp where we would live while we were climbing. The second pitch was climbed going through the only clear fissure on the wall, the first part was very fractured, that gave us some tense moments.

En ocasiones quedábamos perplejos por los desprendimientos de rocas que se producían por causas naturales, un constante movimiento que nos mantenía alertas a todos nosotros en especial cuando caminábamos por la base del tepui. La escalada transcurría lenta, después del segundo largo era muy difícil saber que nos esperaría día a día, era sin lugar a dudas una aventura, travesías por tramos muy descompuestos, exteriores, diedros, secciones un poco húmedas, era una fiesta de incertidumbre.

El 12 de Mayo la finalización del último largo estuvo a cargo de Daniel y de Alfredo, donde terminaron la sección de pared y establecieron el punto final de nuestra ruta en el Padapue Tepui – “La Diosa Mapanare” (A3 5.11+, 200m, 6 largos).

A nuestra vuelta en la comunidad de Campo Carrao, celebraban el día de las madres, allí tuvimos la oportunidad de compartir con ellos nuestras experiencias y conocer algunas de sus costumbres.

Sometimes we were shocked by the falling rocks, it was a constant movement that used to keep us alert, specially when we walked on the base of the wall. The climbing was slow, after the second pitch it was hard to know what every day would bring us, without a doubt this was an adventure, climbs on very decomposed rock, dihedrals, wet zones, it was an uncertainty festival.

On May 12 2012, Daniel and Alfredo were in charge of the last pitch. They got to the top of wall and stablished a finishing point to our route in the Padapue Tepuy called “La Diosa Mapanare” (A3 5.11+, 200m, 6 pitches).

Back in Campo Carrao, it was mothers day, we had the chance to share our stories with them and got to know some of their customs.

La experiencia en el Padapue Tepui fue definitivamente muy especial y particular, hemos tenido el privilegio de visitar otra de las tantas bellezas naturales de Venezuela, donde no sólo hemos tenido la oportunidad de escalar, sino también hemos intercambiado con los habitantes de la zona donde han quedado buenas huellas. Esta zona es muy poco visitada y es verdaderamente bella. La comunidad de Campo Carrao es abierta, cordial, organizada y aunque los visiten poco ellos están conscientes del potencial turístico que albergan.

Our experience on the Padapue Tepuy was definitely special, we have had the privilege to visit another of Venezuela’s natural beauties, we didn’t just climb, we also shared with the local villagers and left behind some good moments. This is a very less visited area but also beautiful. The Campo Carrao community is open, kind, organized, and although their not visited much, they’re aware of the turistic potential of their land.

“En el kilómetro 12 golpeé el cierre rápido de la rueda trasera, se metió hacia la rueda y empujó el rotor del disco hacia adentro doblándolo. Lo medio arreglé pero igual tuve que rodar el resto de la ruta con la rueda trasera frenada.”

“My rear wheel slipped off in a right turn hitting the skewer le-ver with a dead log, the lever pushed against the rotor bending it. I had to ride the rest of the day dragging my rear wheel, this happened on Kilometer 12.”

Nos ayudamos entre todos para salir de los barriales. -Mé-tete por aquí, o por allá-, - Camina este pedazo o mejor móntate porque sí se puede rodar un rato.

In the toughest parts of the trail it was common to hear “Come on, take the right trail”, “walk this section” or “go back to the saddle”. We all helped each other.

Más de una vez me pregunté si valdría la pena seguir en la carrera. Me imaginaba enfrente de la gente de “Racer Regis-tration” diciéndoles “This race is over for me”, y a la vez me preguntaba ¿cómo me sacarían ellos de allá?

“Was it worth to continue in this race?” I asked myself several times and then I imagined standing in front of the Racer Regis-tration booth saying – this race is over for me. – I wondered how they would take me out.

¡Esta gente hace un trabajo excepcional de logística! Arman y desarman 200 carpas en pocas horas. Aún cuando lo hacen siempre en gramita verde y plana, lo hacen muy bien y rápido..

These people are logistic wizards! They set 200 tents in a couple hours, although it is always on soft, clean and nice ground they do it to perfection.

Me tocó ver pasar a los primeros tres, los mismos que el año pasado habían quedado en el podio y que este año igualmente se lo estaban disputando. Ellos ya llevarían unos 45 o 50 Km. cuando nos encontramos, y estos iban como si nada. El promedio de velocidad de estos tres supera los 20 Km./hr. diario sobre distancias de 50 Km. ¡Son unos bárbaros! Otro nivel.

I had the opportunity to see the first three riders pass me on the trail, the same top three riders of last year battling for the podium glory again. Al-though they had already be-tween 45 to 50 kilometers in their legs they seemed to float over the obstacles. These guys average over 20 Km./hr. daily on distances greater than 50 Km. Simply outstanding!
