MICHIGAN CITIES ANDFAILING SCHOOL

DISTRICTS SHOULD KEEPEYES ON DETROIT!

The buzz in political circles is “Watch theprogress toward emergency managertakeover” of The City of Detroit. A state re-view panel and the Governor are weighingin on the potential takeover. The Gover-nor’s comments serve as a signal for whatmany citizens of Detroit already fear. “Itwill probablyget worse be-fore it gets anybetter.” The De-troit PublicSchools is rec-ognized as afailing schooldistrict. Therecord 300 mil-lion dollarsdeficit followingthe appoint-ment of ane m e r g e n c ymanager to turnthings aroundraises eyebrowssince the financial condition of the DPS ac-tually worsened under state emergencymanagement. Now the Detroit City Coun-cil has approved a 10% pay reduction for600 union workers of The American Feder-ation of State, County, and Municipal Em-ployees Council 25. The forced furlough ofunion workers is a tired strategy, which hasnot proven effective to date in balancingthe budget which also is operating at a 300million deficit. Reductions of city services,including fire and police protection havecitizens very concerned about their safety.The public streets in Detroit are not safe!

Recent news reports profile state reviewfindings suggesting the Detroit Police De-partment has a police force with approxi-mately 2,500 officers. The greatest findingis that less than a third of the officers areinvolved in direct patrols. This fact shouldhave every citizen outraged in Detroit andhave the rest of the city governments look-ing at their own resources allocation andassignment systems to better streamlineservices in the field and on street patrols.In fairness let me state that Detroit Policeofficials refute the State findings. The po-lice department and city officials have en-dured numerous scandals in recent years.Corruption has deep roots in government!

Criticisms from onlookers include claims ofthe lack of transparency in hiring and pro-motions including the families and friendsof City Council Members, The Mayor, andState Appointed Emergency Managers.There should be no tolerance for the con-tinuation of family dynasties in public em-ployment. Everyone has a family but noteveryone’s family should find employmentin publicly funded organizations just be-cause of a political appointment. The citi-zens are watching!

In January 2009, the state appointed

Robert Bobb as emergency manager for theDetroit Public Schools to address a deficitBobb estimated at more than $150 million.Bobb promised to return the district to asurplus by the end of the year and he re-ceived continual media acclaim as he an-nounced each of his “reforms.” Then the

actual resultscame in: underBobb’s state-i m p o s e dtenure thedeficit ex-ploded to morethan $300 mil-lion. Accordingto FormerWayne CountyP r o s e c u t o rMike Dugganwho may berunning for theDetroit Mayor’Office. I be-lieve that Dug-

gan’s ideas on turning around Detroit arevery practical!

Likewise, schools in large urban areas fallvictim to the lack of transparency, and cor-ruption in administrations bent on nepo-tism and the hiring of under-qualifiedpersons placed in key administrative rolesas the result of family ties, friendships, andpolitical cronyism. When organizationalleadership fails to create checks and bal-ances, citizen watch groups will rise to cor-rect the abuses! Public boards of educationshould act to enact anti-nepotism policiesand insure that persons hired into admin-istrative roles possess the credentials re-quired of certified educators whom theyare charged to supervise. The mass exo-dus of white, black, and brown familiesfrom public schools will not cease whilecorrupt practices remain obvious! Re-align-ing resources to the classroom must be ahigh priority as are police officers on thebeat! Are you watching your public insti-tutions and governing boards? Help keepthem honest!

In Holland, 37.6 percent of individuals 25 andolder have an associates degree or higher (27.3percent in Zeeland), according to U.S. Censusnumbers. However, 62 percent of all jobs inMichigan require some form of post-secondaryeducation.

Sonia Sotomayor paintsa revealing self-portrait"It is impossible not to recognize that the vestiges of discrimination take along time to erase," writes in Mi mundo adorado (My Beloved World, Vin-tage, $ 27.95) Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic justice to sit on theUnited States Supreme Court. In her memoirs, she reveals details of herchildhood growing up in a poor neighborhood in the Bronx, as well as thedifficulties she faced as a college student at Princeton in an environmentrife with prejudice and racism. Just a week after it was published, the bookhas risen to the top of bestseller’s lists.

Sotomayor's book is not the first time a Supreme Court justice opens a lit-erary window into their personal life. Justice Clarence Thomas describedhis experience with poverty, racism and discrimination in My grandfather'sson, and Sandra Day O'Connor wrote about her childhood in a cattle ranchin Arizona in her memoir Lazy B.

However, in Mi mundo adorado Sotomayor dares to paint a portrait of her-self far more revealing than her two predecessors. In her memoirs, she de-scribes her childhood pains, her alcoholic father and a mother who wasfrequently absent from home. Diagnosed with diabetes, Sotomayor urinated in bed,suffered from fainting and had to learn to give herself insulin shots at the age ofnine.

Sotomayor, of Puerto Rican descent, received an advance of more than a million dol-lars to write this memoir. El alcalde de San Antonio Julián Castro abogó el pasado mes de Febrero a favorde conceder a los 11 millones de inmigrantes sin papeles una vía a la natural-ización, al comparecer durante la primera audiencia legislativa desde que elpresidente Barack Obama presentara la semana pasada su propuesta de re-forma migratoria.

“La opción a la naturalización debería ser la opción. El Congreso la ha adop-tado varias veces a lo largo del tiempo”, dijo Castro durante la audiencia cele-brada por el comité en pleno del comité judicial de la cámara baja.

“Discrepo con la descripción de que es una medida extrema. Lo extremo seríaabrir las fronteras, y nadie está pidiendo eso”, respondió el alcalde demócrataal presidente del comité, el republicano Bob Goodlatte, quien le preguntó sihay una opción intermedia que se ubique entre las dos más extremas: deporta-ciones masivas y permitir que los indocumentados se naturalicen.

"The loans initially provide relief, but they be-come a hardship. By a three-to-one margin, borrowers want more regula-tion of these products."

Previous Pew research shows the average payday loan is $375. Americansspend $7.4 billion per year on the loans, including an average of $520 in in-terest per borrower who ends up indebted for five months of the year.

Additional findings from the national telephone survey of payday loan bor-rowers and 10 focus groups held across the country reveal why people turnto these loans and how they are deeply torn about the experience.

Key Findings: •Fifty-eight percent of payday loan borrowers have trouble meeting monthlyexpenses at least half the time. These borrowers are dealing with persist-ent cash shortfalls rather than temporary emergencies.•Only 14 percent of borrowers say they can afford to repay an average pay-day loan out of their monthly budgets. •Seventy-eight percent of borrowers rely on information from lenders—whosell these loans as a safe, two-week product—when choosing to borrowmoney. This reliance reinforces the perception that payday loans are un-like other forms of credit because they will not create ongoing debt. Yet thestated price tag for a two-week, $375 loan bears little resemblance to theactual $520 cost over the five months of debt that the average user experi-ences. •While payday loans are often presented as an alternative to overdraftingon a checking account, a majority of borrowers end up paying fees for both.•Some borrowers ultimately turn to the same options they could have usedinstead of payday loans to finally pay off the loans. Forty-one percent needan outside cash infusion to eliminate payday loan debt– including gettinghelp from friends or family, selling or pawning personal possessions, takingout another type of loan, or using a tax refund.•By almost a three-to-one margin, borrowers favor more regulation of pay-day loans. Attendance at the 2013 North American International Auto Show was thehighest in nearly a decade, according to officials.

The show, which ended Sunday, January 27, brought total ticketed atten-dance to 795,416 people, including nearly 217,000 in the final two days.

About 60 vehicles debuted during this year’s auto show during the PressPreview days on Jan. 14 and Jan. 15, which attracted more than 5,200journalists from 60 countries.

Detalló que decidió realizar este documen-tal en México porque hace un tiempo seenteró que Fellove vivía aquí, fue entoncesque inició su documental, capturó muchasimágenes del cantante y de la ciudad.

Spectrum Health surgeons performed the first lungtransplant in West Michigan on Monday, February4, at the Spectrum Health Fred and Lena MeijerHeart Center. Joseph Steponski, 59, of Wyoming,Michigan, emerged from surgery that morning andis in good condition.

Steponski received a single, right-lung transplant. Ateam headed by cardiothoracic surgeon AsgharKhaghani, MD, performed the transplant. He wasassisted by cardiothoracic surgeon Robert Hooker,MD.

“Our patient’s prognosis for a strong recovery andcontinued success appear good at this time,” saidReda Girgis, MD, medical director of the lungtransplant program. “Mr. Steponski is focused onhis recovery and what is required to maintain hishealth.”

A medical team led by Girgis will monitor Stepon-ski’s progress after he leaves the hospital and watchfor organ rejection issues.

“This is a milestone for us and for West Michigan,”said Matt Van Vranken, executive vice president,Spectrum Health Delivery System. “This means an-other group of West Michigan patients can receivethis highly specialized care in their community, re-ducing travel, costs and stress to them and theirfamilies.”

Steponski suffered from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fi-brosis, a disease of unknown cause that leads toprogressive scarring of the lungs. Before the trans-plant, his lung function had fallen to less than halfof normal and he had severe shortness of breath

with minimalphysical ac-tivity, requir-ingcontinuoussupplementaloxygen. Hewas referredfor transplan-tation byWael Ber-jaoui, MD, apulmonolo-gist with theSpectrumHealth Med-ical Group.

“Everyoneinvolvedwith Mr.Steponski’scare, fromthe teammanaging hislung disease,

to the teams performing his surgery and postopera-tive care, has done a tremendous job,” saidKhaghani. “Mr. Steponski’s recovery so far hasbeen remarkable.”

The lung transplant team is part of the RichardDeVos Heart & Lung Transplant Program. Otherphysicians involved with the transplant procedureincluded cardiothoracic surgeons Edward Murphy,MD, and Tomasz Timek, MD, along with anesthe-siologists Penny Wilton, MD, Matthew Parlmer,DO, and William Telford, DO.

Spectrum Health has one of three adult heart andlung transplant programs in Michigan and receivedstate approval in February 2010. Girgis came toSpectrum Health in July of 2012 and the programreceived approval from the United Network forOrgan Sharing to begin listing patients for lungtransplantation in December of 2012.

Ingredients:

2 cups celery, thinly sliced(on a bit of a diagonal)1 sweet-tart apple, such asBraeburn or Pink Lady, coredand cut into smallish chunks2 tablespoons (heaping)golden raisins2 tablespoons capers1 tablespoon fresh squeezedlemon juice1 tablespoon good olive oil2 tablespoons thinly slicedfresh mint3 tablespoons (generousTbs.) crumbled ricotta salata(or other fresh, salty cheese)

1. If the raisins are dry, soakthem for 10 minutes in a bitof apple juice or water. Thendrain them.
