HOPES AND DREAMSFOR IMMIGRANTS

RESTS IN THE HANDSOF OUR CONGRESS

There is a heightened awareness of theplight of immigrants without immigrationauthorization in America. Many articles,news stories and public opinion polls areeducating our electorate and our electedrepresentatives about the hardships of an“estimated 11 million” persons who live ina permanent underclass. Without legal im-m ig ra t i onstatus “legalpresence” inthe country,they areforced towork oftentimes in theleast favor-able condi-tions. Thevast major-ity of thegroup are infact farmw o r k e r swho toil inthe soil cultivating and harvesting our na-tions fruits and vegetables or work ondairy farms, in plant nurseries andfruit/vegetable/plant storage facilities.

The plight of farm workers and childrenbrought here by their parents in childhoodis easily understood by most Americanswilling to listen to reason. Most immi-grants came to the U.S. to find employ-ment as a matter of survival for themselvesand their families left behind in their na-tive countries. In most cases, the principaldriving factor for coming to the U.S. was toescape poverty. It is hard to permanentlyblame or banish a hardworking and other-wise law abiding group of persons forseeking refuge in America for these un-derstandable reasons.

However, The United States of America is asovereign nation based on laws. We haveestablished borders and legal proceduresfor entering and leaving the country. Wecannot expect to have open borders with-out immigration restrictions. A failure toenforce our immigration laws would resultin our being over-populated along withother negative outcomes including in-creased unemployment, increased crimerates, etc. It may sound a little “right ofcenter” but it is very true!

Our Senate through Senators Schrumerand McCain drafted a bipartisan bill thatwill clearly bring compromise to thebiggest hurdles facing immigration re-form. The bill S. 744 will strengthen secu-rity of our borders and bring penalties topersons who knowingly hire workers notauthorized to be here. Most importantlyto the 11 million people not here withproper authorization, it will provide a“pathway to earned citizenship.” Thisroad to becoming a citizen is an importantissue in our community.

Many Hispanic families have direct family

ties to persons who have limited opportu-nities without citizenship. The current waitand difficulties with the immigration sys-tem currently have applicants waiting up to75 years for family members to be re-united. We can do a better job of speedingup the process while properly screeningimmigrants. Unfortunately, our nation has

w i t n e s s e dmany instanceswhere immi-grants have en-tered legallyand committedacts of terroragainst ourcountry. Thishorrible condi-tion will not beeasily resolvedand may affectthe discussionand remediesproposed inthe new bill.

We cannot expect that the flow of immi-grants to the United States will continue inthe numbers we have seen in previousyears. Nor can we expect that Americanswill continue to be so welcoming to per-sons who do not “Get in line legally,” asthey say. These are valid viewpoints. Weneed to be prepared to make some com-promises.

Our community should ask what are wewilling to commit ourselves to doing inorder to “Earn our citizenship?” Pay fines,serve in the military, serve in an AmericanVolunteer Corps, go to college, accept apenalty or serve a longer period of resi-dency, learn English, U.S. History, Govern-ment and voter responsibility are few goodideas to demonstrate our worthiness andloyalty. We must be willing to pledge our-selves and our community to positive ac-tion in order to persuade our U.S. Senatorsand House of Representatives that we areas deserving of American citizenship as weclaim we are. Our collective hopes anddreams are in the balance!

PROTESTS AT HISPANIC CENTER OF WESTERN MICHIGANProtests went on outside The Hispanic Center of Western Michigan as Congressmen Justin Amash and RaulLabrador addressed an audience of about 50 community members. As the media looked on protests ensuedoutside with chants that sometimes drowned out the speaking and listening tour of the representatives pres-ent to conduct a town meeting on the topic of immigration reform. The two Republicans found little supportfrom the crowd gathered who seemed unswayed by the gestures of goodwill and support expressed. Con-gressional Representatives Amash & Labrador expressed hesitancy to support full-scale immigration reformuntil the borders can be adequately sealed from further illegal crossings. Many participants complained of thelong wait for loved ones to become citizens and expressed frustration about the lack of Republican leadershipto find solutions to lengthy immigration processing and failure to support the Dream Act and a pathway to citi-zenship for the nearly 11 million undocumented persons in America. Protestors outside want a path to legal-ization.

DETROIT –Michigan United worked with immigrant families and advocates in news confer-ences across the state to show support for U.S. Senate “Gang of Eight’s” proposed immigra-tion reform and to illustrate the human costs of current broken immigration system. St.Gabriel’s Church in southwest Detroit was where dozens gathered to hear those familiespraise the path to citizenship offered by the proposals.

“My family has spent years marching and speaking out and we’ve sacrificed thousands ofdollars and a house to keep my husband, my children’s father, here safe with us,” said CindyGarcia, UAW member whose husband is in danger of deportation. “The path to citizenship inthe proposed laws puts us close to the goal, but there are many details yet to emerge andmany hurdles to overcome before our family and many others can have justice and feelsafe.”

Faith leaders from a variety of denominations also spoke out urging lawmakers to remaindiligent and focused because the actions directly impact the future of millions.

“We pray that the stories of heartbreak from families broken by the immigration system willsoon come to an end,” said Father Jaime Honjas of St. Gabriel's Church and Rectory. “Itcan’t happen too quickly and so we fervently urge Senators keep working to make sure thisproposed bill supports family unity in every possible way.”

Busses Rolled To Washington D.C. From MostMichigan Cities For April 10th March to ReformImmigration

Members of the parishes of St. Joseph the Worker - Wyoming,Holy Name of Jesus - Wyoming, and St. Francis de Sales - Hol-land, together with other Catholics travelled to Washington, D.C.to take part in a Mass and March for Comprehensive ImmigrationReform on April 10th 2013. A bus for 56 people was chartered bythese parishes for the events. All of the seats were reserved byarea laity, clergy and religious advocates.

A prayer service was held at St. Joseph the Worker CatholicChurch located at the corner of 32nd St. and Buchanan inWyoming, Michigan to initiate this pilgrimage in solidarity with ournation’s immigrant community.

Detroit, Lansing, Saginaw, Kalamazoo communities also sent del-egations to participate in the multi-state initiative to gain a path-way for citizenship for immigrants without authorization.

Hundreds Descend on D.C. to ProtectFamilies, Workers, Homeowners

Michigan United Part of 500 Seeking Immigration Re-form, Deliver Resignation Letter to FHA Director’sHome

WASHINGTON D.C. –50 members of Michigan Unitedadded their voices and strength to a group of 500 peoplefrom across the nation that came to help lawmakers pro-tect immigrant families and workers with an attainablepath to citizenship and to seek mortgage relief for mil-lions of underwater homeowners. Senate immigrationhearings were the focus of one set of actions and thehome of the recalcitrant Acting Director of the FederalHousing Finance Agency, Ed DeMarco was the other.

Monday morning (April 22) saw the first Senate judiciarycommittee hearing on the immigration reform bill withtestimony offered by leaders in the immigrant rightsmovement.

“We are in an historic moment with the introduction ofthis bill, but we will continue to fight for a final versionthat includes a compassionate comprehensive path to citi-zenship,” said Michigan United leader Gema Lowe from in-

side the Senate hearing. “And because so many hardworking families may be eligible for the final reform, westrongly encourage the President to enact a moratoriumon deportations until the bill is signed."

The group of visitors to the capital also delivered a resig-nation letter to the current head of FHFA asking him tosign it because of his defiant opposition to grant relief tofamilies whose homes are underwater and facing eviction.

“Ed DeMarco must be one of the few people in the nationwho doesn’t understand how the banks are crushing fami-lies and the economy,” said Debbie Adams of MichiganUnited. “We are asking him to keep men, women and chil-dren in their homes by granting mortgage relief or to signthe letter of resignation we dropped off at his housetoday.”

DeMarco has taken a position counter to that of theObama Administration, most economists, and the FHFA'sown studies by refusing to grant principal reduction tounderwater mortgage holders thus driving millions to-wards foreclosure and economic instability.

The Dream Action Coalition com-mends the progress of the “Gang of 8”and will launch a grassroots and on-line effort to urge Senators JohnCornyn (R-Tex) and Jeff Sessions (R-Ala) not to stand in the way of debate.

Despite the progress, Dream ActionCoalition is also concerned to see cer-tain vital provisions lacking: 1) thosepreviously deported should have aguaranteed and quick process toapply for return and reunify with theirfamilies in the U.S.; 2) legislationshould provide practical waivers forthose who have not committed violentor aggravated felonies; 3) family unityshould continue to be an integralcomponent under the new immigra-tion system.

The Senate is making headway withkey provisions, however, we will con-tinue to press to ensure that the legis-lation is fair, practical, and serves ourcommunities and economy withouthaving to wait for border security tobe defined and implemented. Carefulevaluation is critical, but there is anurgency: Americans are expectingCongress to reform our system, whicheveryone on both sides of the aisleagrees is “broken.” Senator Sessions,immigration’s staunchest opponent,

should not stand in the way of mod-ernizing our system, and SenatorCornyn should not followed his lead.

The Dream Action Coalition will workto ensure the American people are notfooled by Sen. Session’s disguised ef-fort to delay and ultimately kill immi-gration reform. Lines are currentlybeing drawn within the RepublicanParty on immigration between thosewho would reform the GOP’s imagewith Latinos and those who would staythe “self-deportation” course. We hopethat more reasonable voices and Sena-tor Cornyn follow their Latino con-stituencies, and ignore the extremepositions of their other, less in touchcolleagues.

Dream Action Coalition will direct ourefforts to ensure Latino voters arepaying attention now, and remembergoing into 2014. And as undocu-mented and directly affected individu-als, we will commit our efforts toensure that the well being of our fami-lies and undocumented communityare prioritized over the political calcu-lations of the Democratic and Republi-can party.

Peromayormente guarda consistencia con losprincipios que yo he planteado repetida-mente para una reforma general. Esteproyecto de ley continuará reforzando laseguridad en nuestras fronteras y lestomará más cuentas a los empleadores siestos contratan trabajadores indocumen-tados a sabiendas. Les proveerá uncamino a ganarse la ciudadanía a los 11millones de personas que ya están ilegal-mente en este país. Y modernizará nue-stro sistema de inmigración legal demanera que podamos reunir a las famil-ias y atraer a los empresarios e inge-nieros sumamente capacitados quecontribuirán a crear empleos bien remu-nerados y a fomentar nuestra economía.Estas son todas medidas de sentidocomún que la mayoría de los esta-dounidenses apoya. Last April, Senators Schumer and McCainbriefed me on the bipartisan immigrationreform bill that they have drafted withtheir colleagues in the Senate. This bill isclearly a compromise, and no one will geteverything they wanted, including me.But it is largely consistent with the princi-ples that I have repeatedly laid out forcomprehensive reform. This bill wouldcontinue to strengthen security at ourborders and hold employers more ac-countable if they knowingly hire undocu-mented workers. It would provide apathway to earned citizenship for the 11million individuals who are already inthis country illegally. And it would mod-ernize our legal immigration system sothat we’re able to reunite families andattract the highly-skilled entrepreneursand engineers who will help create goodpaying jobs and grow our economy.These are all commonsense steps thatthe majority of Americans support. Iurge the Senate to quickly move this billforward and, as I told Senators Schumerand McCain, I stand willing to do what-ever it takes to make sure that compre-hensive immigration reform becomes a

reality as soon as possible.

Lozada puso a la disposición de Habitat yde los futuros dueños de la vivienda susdestrezas como “handy-man” durante laprimera jornada de trabajo voluntario para acondicionar la residencia de los Delfi-Gar-cía, ayudando así a continuar la misión de Habitat. Habitat for Humanity es una orga-nización sin fines de lucro dedicada a construir, rehabilitar y preservar viviendasmediante la promoción de políticas de vivienda justas y equitativas y la capacitación yel acceso a los recursos para ayudar a las familias a mejorar sus condiciones devivienda.

El proyecto de rehabilitación permitirá a la familia acceso a una vivienda digna a travésde su propio esfuerzo, puesto que los miembros de la familia deberán emplear 400horas de trabajo voluntario hacia la rehabilitación de su hogar. Siguiendo el modelo deayuda mutua y esfuerzo propio de Habitat, los Delfi-García también asumirán unahipoteca de bajo costo para convertirse en propietarios de su residencia. Actualmente,la pareja Delfi-García y sus tres hijos, residen en una vivienda inadecuada en el patiode la casa de un familiar en las Parcelas Los Ochenta en Salinas. Con la rehabilitaciónque empezó hoy, Juan Delfi, quien es panadero y barbero, su esposa y sus dos hijostendrán una vivienda digna en la comunidad El Coquí de Salinas. Esta es la viviendanúmero 17 de Habitat otorga en Puerto Rico.

“La vivienda pública no es suficiente para llenar la gran necesidad de vivienda ade-cuada que existe en Puerto Rico. Por eso la labor de Habitat es tan importante y nece-saria, pues ofrece una alternativa digna a familias trabajadoras que necesitan un lugarseguro donde vivir,” dijo Amanda Silva, directora ejecutiva de Habitat for Humanity ofPuerto Rico.

Las labores del día incluyeron la creación del huerto, que se convertirá en una her-ramienta para que la familia y los voluntarios adquieran el conocimiento y la experien-cia práctica de cómo alimentarse saludablemente y ahorrar en la compra de alimentos.

I recently had the opportunity to attend the 20th An-nual Dia De Las Mujeres conference at MichiganState University.

Conference coordinator, Juan Flores explains, “We workwith people across the state of Michigan. Every yearpeople ask us how they can get involved. A lot of themwork at agencies that serve the Latino community, sothey use the conference as a way to expose Latinos to aprofessional conference where they can network andlearn from motivational workshops. It’s Latinas talkingto Latinas through workshops. For example, ourkeynote speaker, Consuelo Kickbush is the highestranking Latina woman in the Combat Support Field ofthe U.S. Army. That’s why different agencies andgroups come because they know they’re going to gainsomething valuable, and we make it very affordable!Group rates are $5 per student and $15 per chaper-ones, and individual registrations are just $25. We alsooffer scholarships.”

One workshop I attended, entitled “Violence AgainstWomen in Telenovelas,” by Dr. Diana I Rios and Esmer-alda Perez de Lopez, focused on turning us into criticalconsumers of this type of media. At the end of thisworkshop, I turned to Brekce Gonzalez, 14 and YessicaGarcia Melendez, 16 from West Ottawa High School inHolland, and asked them about their experience.Brekce commented, “It was really fun. I would really liketo come here when I graduate.” When asked aboutwhat she learned so far, Yessica commented, “[About]women’s struggles. [The conference] opens your eyesto all the things that we can accomplish.” Brekce nod-ded enthusiastically and added, “I also think thatwomen are stronger than men because for example inmy own family, without my mom my dad wouldn’t bewho he is now, because my mom has been an inspira-tion to do new things”

Featured workshop presenter Lucrecia Guerrero, authorof the award-winning book Tree of Sighs, a book that“highlights how the human spirit goes on, how muchpeople can endure, and not only survive, but makesomething of their lives,” had this advice for aspiringauthors: “I hope that people don’t worry too muchabout publishing, but that they write down their ownstory that they can pass down. It’s one way of remem-bering your traditions and your culture and keeping italive while you become someone new.”

At the vendors’ tables, Angie Lee Gonzalez, newmother and entrepreneur of El Arte de Ser, explains, “Istarted a non-profit to raise money for a scholarship Icreated in remembrance of my dad, Arturo Gonzalez.The scholarship is geared toward high school juniorsand seniors that are involved in their community.Whatever we can’t raise with our sales, we provide our-selves. Illami Martinez, assistant coordinator, explains thatthey were looking for, “Leadership, people who havebeen actively involved in the Latino community, who

have “made it” and want to take other people alongthat path. Each year you see more leadership, more in-spiration, more empowerment.

¡SI SE PUEDE!Dolores Huerta celebrated her83rd birthday on April 10 in Wash-ington DC at an immigration reformrally at the nation’s capitol withlabor and community leaders, con-gressional representatives, the National Education Association, Casade Maryland, and others, including renowned musicians, Olga Tañonand Juanes. They are rallying support for a comprehensive immigra-tion reform law with a path to citizenship.

April 10th was a significant date. It marks the anniversary of the firstfarmworker march to Sacramento in 1966. And in 2006, hundreds ofthousands marched and rallied across the United States in protest ofrestrictive changes to immigration policy.

Each of these historic occasions were inspired by a strong desire forjustice and human rights. Today's rallies at the US Capitol should in-spire Congress to pass a just Immigration Reform bill that includes apath to citizenship. This has always been the policy of the UnitedStates. Every immigrant group that came to this country has beengranted citizenship. Immigrants have always been a driving positiveforce for the economy of this nation. Send emails, call, and visit yourrepresentatives in Congress and urge them to vote for just immigra-tion reform that includes a path to citizenship.

La difícil situación de los trabajadores agrícolas ylos niños traídos aquí por sus padres en la infan-cia es fácil de entender por la mayoría de los es-tadounidenses que están dispuestos a escuchara la razón. La mayoría de los inmigrantes llegarona los EE.UU. para encontrar empleo como unasunto de supervivencia para ellos y sus familiasque se quedan en sus países de origen. En la may-oría de los casos, el princi-pal factor determinantepara venir a los EE.UU. fuea salir de la pobreza. Esdifícil culpar o desterrardefinitivamente un grupode personas buscandorefugio en Estados Unidospor estas razones com-prensibles. Son personastrabajadoras que respetenlas leyes.

Sin embargo, los EstadosUnidos de América es un país soberano basadoen las leyes. Hemos establecido las fronteras y losprocedimientos legales para la entrada y salidadel país. No podemos esperar a tener las fron-teras abiertas y sin restricciones a la inmigración.A falta de aplicación de las leyes de inmigraciónse traduciría en nuestro ser sobre-pobladas, juntocon otros resultados negativos como el aumentodel desempleo, el aumento de las tasas de delin-cuencia, etc. Puede sonar un poco "derechista",pero es la verdad!

Nuestro Senado por los senadores McCain ySchrumer redactó un proyecto de ley bipartidistaque traerá claridad compromiso de los mayoresobstáculos que enfrenta la reforma migratoria. Elproyecto de ley S. 744 reforzará la seguridad denuestras fronteras y traerá sanciones a las per-sonas que a sabiendas contratan trabajadores noautorizados para estar aquí. Lo más importantees que los 11 millones de personas cuales noestán aquí con la debida autorización, se propor-cionará un "camino hacia la ciudadanía ganada".Este camino de convertirse en un ciudadano esun tema importante en nuestra comunidad.

Muchas familias hispanas tienen lazos familiaresdirectos a las personas que tienen escasas opor-

tunidades sin ciudadanía. La espera y las dificul-tades con el actual sistema de inmigración ac-tualmente han visto solicitantes esperar hasta 75años para los miembros de la unidad familiar.Podemos hacer un mejor trabajo de acelerar elproceso, mientras que mantenemos la detecciónadecuada de inmigrantes. Por desgracia, nuestropaís ha sido testigo de muchos casos en que los

inmigrantes han entrado demanera legal y cometido actosde terrorismo contra nuestropaís. Esta terrible enfermedadno se resolverá fácilmente ypuede afectar a la discusión ylos remedios propuestos en elnuevo proyecto de ley.

No podemos esperar que elflujo de inmigrantes a los Es-tados Unidos se mantenga enlos números que hemos vistoen años anteriores. Tampoco

podemos esperar que los estadounidenses sigansiendo tan acogedores para las personas que no"se pongan en la fila legalmente", como dicen.Estos puntos de vista son válidos. Tenemos queestar dispuestos a hacer algunas concesiones.

Nuestra comunidad debe preguntar qué estamosdispuestos a comprometernos a hacer con el finde "ganar nuestra ciudadanía?" Multas de pago,servir en el ejército, servir en un Cuerpo de Vol-untarios de América, ir a la universidad, aceptaruna sanción o realizar un período de tiempo res-idencia más largo, aprender Inglés,Historia de EE.UU., el gobierno y laresponsabilidad electoral son algu-nas buenas ideas para demostrarnuestra dignidad y lealtad. Debemosestar dispuestos a comprometernosy nuestra comunidad para la acciónpositiva con el fin de persuadir anuestros Senadores y de la Cámarade Representantes de EstadosUnidos que estamos tan merece-dores de la ciudadanía americanacomo decimos nosotros. Nuestrasesperanzas y sueños colectivosestán en la balanza!

CANELO VS TROUT RESULTS: ALVAREZ UNIFIESTITLES WITH DECISION WIN

Two undefeated champions met in a key fight here, and it was Canelo Alvarezwho walked away with the win in a very good fight. Both men gave it their all inan entertaining back and forth battle. The fight largely came down to Trout'saggression and higher volume attack vs. Canelo's single power shots. Thebiggest moment of the fight came in the opening seconds of round 7, whereCanelo dropped Trout with a straight right for the only knockdown of the fightand the first knockdown of Trout's career.

As seems to always be the case with boxing, controversy was present thanksto the judges' scoring. With this fight taking place in Texas, there was a fearthat the judging would be poor, and that's exactly what happened. While I hadCanelo winning the fight myself, some of the scores, particularly after round 8,were ridiculous. This was a very close fight - much closer than 118-109 indi-cates. It's boxing, and it's Texas, so yes, we should have seen it coming, butthat still doesn't make it OK.

Setting the judging aside, this was a great fight, with Canelo showing that hecan indeed triumph against a very tough opponent, but at the same time look-ing human and like a fighter still with room to grow.

A competition among West Michigan comedians gave rise to a friend and former student who hasmade an impression on hundreds of fans that have attended shows where he has performed. As wefollowed Jr. Pagan on the road to stardom, we were able to get some great stories about his familyand upbringing. He shared his experiences with us as he competed with 81 comics and eventuallyadvancing to the semi-finals and then the finals. While his performance was funny and superbly deliv-ered, he ended the evening proud that he had made it as far as he did. He said, “I would like to con-gratulate Nardos Osterhart, 1st place, Joshua Adams 2nd place, and Robert Jenkins 3rd placeFunniest Persons in Grand Rapids winners. The details have been set for Van Andel Arenato host the Bachata & Salsa Dance FestivalFeaturing Toby Love, after the event had ini-tially been announced at the Community Inclu-sion Group’s third annual CommunityEngagement Reception in March. Rising mod-ern bachata star Toby Love will headline thiscabaret-style event on Friday, June 21st from9pm-2am.

Attendees can plan to dance the night awaywith their spouse, date, friends or whomeverright on the arena floor. Ticketholders must be18 years old to enter. General admission. Tick-ets $35. Toby Loveis one ofthe pio-neers ofmodern

bachata music, uniquely combining the oldCaribbean folk genre (popularized primarily inthe Dominican Republic) with Hip Hop, Pop,and R&B. Singing in both Spanish and English,Love embarked on his own after getting hisstart as a backup singer and dancer for themega-successful bachata boy band, Aventura,which helped sprout its own crossover super-star in Romeo Santos. On his own, Love hashelmed hits including “Llorar Lloviendo” and“Tengo Un Amor,” for which he won Latin Bill-board Awards for Tropical Airplay Song of theYear in 2007. Love also won the Latin BillboardAward’s Latin Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Yearfor his self-titled debut album.

ity’s Community Inclusion Group (CIG), whomhas been working for three years to bring morediverse entertainment to downtown GrandRapids. CIG is collaborating with local promot-ers Calderon Promotions and F-Tivo Entertain-ment to put on this special event.

Joining Toby Love on this special night to addsome local flair are Grand Rapids-based salsabands Orquesta Tradicion and Orquesta Can-dela as well as bachata band Latin Dynastyand bachata artist Bersachi. Such isthe story of Sixto Rodriguez - a Mexican-American folk musi-cian with roots in Michigan. Sixto Diaz Rodriguez owes hisname to the fact that he was the sixth sibling in his family ofhumble immigrants who moved from Mexico to the US in the1920s. A large number of his songs were centered on the po-litical insensitivity to the poor who lived in the inner cities. Hislyrics were all about pervasive injustice, and these were sub-jects that could easily touch many youngsters in that era. Hisstory is now the subject of a best selling documentarySearching for Sugar Man that has received glowing reviewsfrom all the critics.

The Oscar-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Mantells the almost unbelievable story of a Mexican-Americansongwriter whose two early Seventies albums bombed inAmerica, but who wound up finding a huge audience inApartheid-era South Africa. Sixto Rodriguez had no idea hewas a legend there until a group of fans found him on the In-ternet and brought him to the country for a series of tri-umphant concerts. But while Searching for Sugar Man(soundtrack and DVD now available) is a fantastic film, it onlygrazes the surface of Rodriguez's life story.

There are only two Rodriguez albums: Cold Fact (1970) andComing From Reality (1971). His priority right now is touring,but he's also beginning to work on new songs.

Reggaeton star Don Omar was the top winner of the Billboard Latin MusicAwards, though the bigger star of the show might have been the one who wasn'tthere: The late Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera. Don Omar took home 10prizes at the annual show on April 26, honoring Spanish-language songs andperformers. Rivera won six prizes, including artist of the year.

Following People Benedict XVI’s resignation, Pope Francis became

the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church.Born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis is the first Jesuitpope, as well as the first pope from the Americas. Since his election to the papacy in March,Pope Francis has been noted for a simplistic and humble approach to the office. The world firstsaw proof of this in his decision to reside in the Vatican guesthouse rather than the papal resi-dence preferred by his predecessors.

Throughout his lifetime, Pope Francis has been recognized for his humility, his concerns withthe poor, and his commitment to build connections between people of all backgrounds andfaiths through dialogue. He chose his name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, who also had aspecial concern for the well-being of the poor.

“[Saint Francis of Assisi] brought to Christianity an idea of poverty against the luxury, pride,vanity of the civil and ecclesiastical powers of the time,” Pope Francis said. “He changed his-tory.”

Pope Francis has also expressed his desire to have a poor church that is for the poor. Thusfar, he has defined his papacy through the promotion of modesty and frugality within thechurch. Maintaining this mission, he cancelled bonuses for all Vatican employees, instead or-dering staff to donate to “charitable organizations.”

In a speech to more than 80,000 in Saint Peter’s Square, the Pope spoke about the affirmationof faith in the creed. He emphasized that Christians will be judged at the end of time on howthey used the talents God gave them and how they served others, especially the poor.

Pope Francis is also adamant in promoting the fundamental importance of women in theRoman Catholic Church. During his short-time as pope, he has spoken several times on thistopic, stressing women’s role in the spread of faith.

He awoke criticism from traditionalists in his decision to wash the feet of two women during aMaundy Thursday Mass at a Rome youth prison. This rite is a re-enactment of Jesus washingthe feet of the 12 apostles before his death. Though some argue this rite should be reservedfor men, Pope Francis has regularly included women in this practice.

“Start by doing what is necessary,” Pope Francis said.” “Then do what is possible, and sud-denly, you are doing the impossible.”

In just a short couple months, Pope Francis has inspired what some call a Papal Renaissance.Time will tell as his legacy is written day by day.

For the quinoa1/2 cup quinoa1 cup water

For the fruits and veggies cup fresh blueberries cup cubed ripe mangoes cup cubed cucumbers1/2 tablespoon dried cranberries

For the lemon basil dressing1 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil2 tablespoons lemon juice1/4 teaspoon lemon zest10 Basil leaves, chopped finelySalt and pepper

Place the quinoa and water in a mediumskillet and bring to a boil. Then reduce heat,and simmer covered for about 15 minutes ortill the quinoa is cooked. Remove the lid,and fluff the quinoa with a fork. Let it cool toroom temperature.

While the quinoa is cooking, combine thefruits in a bowl and refrigerate till you areready to serve the salad.

Whisk together all the dressing ingredients,except the chopped basil. Refrigerate till youare ready to serve. Chop and add the basilto the dressing just before serving. If youadd it earlier, it will go black.

Add half the dressing to the quinoa and mixgently.

Assemble the salad just before serving –toss the quinoa, fruits and cucumbers to-gether. Serve other half of the dressing onthe side. Serve immediately.

Blueberries not only provide scrumptious, antioxidant-rich berries,but blueberry shrubs also add year-round interest to the landscape.

If you could think of one perfect food, the blueberry has to be rightup there at the top of the list. Blueberries are rich in vitamins A, C, Eand beta-carotene as well as rich in the minerals potassium, man-ganese, magnesium. In addition, they’re a cornucopia of antioxi-dants with their anti-cancer properties, and may very well keepsenile dementia at bay.

There are many varieties of blueberries and the ones most hardy inyour neck of the woods is dependent on the section of country inwhich you live. I live in the Deep South, and the rabbit-eye varietygrows very well here. All blueberries require an acidic, well-drained

soil with plenty of mulch to keep the moisture in the soil and weedsat bay. The soil should have a pH of 4.5 to 5.5 for optimum growthand production. They require a certain amount of chill hours (hoursthat the plant is subjected to temperatures below 45 degrees) a yearin order to bear fruit the following spring.

This summer fruit is easy to grow and requires minimum care in thegarden. To help homeowners grow and care for their own blueber-ries, the garden experts at Pike Nurseries offer these tips:

- Even though blueberries produce their fruit in the summermonths, it is not too late to begin planting them now. Plantyours in a spot that receives full sunlight, either in the gardenor in a large pot.

- To thrive, blueberries need a nutrient-rich soil with gooddrainage. If planting in the garden, mix the native soil withPike Planting Mix at a 50/50 ratio. - - This helps break up thehard Georgia red clay and allows for better drainage.

- To protect your berries from birds, cover your blueberryshrub with bird netting as soon as the berries start to appear.

- Blueberries come in many different varieties. A few of thebest options for Georgia gardeners are O’Neal blueberries,Burgundy Wild Lowbush blueberries, Top Hat blueberries andPatriot Early Season blueberries. All of these varieties are car-ried at Pike Nurseries.

- The easiest way to pick your berries is to hold a bucket un-derneath a cluster in one hand, and gently pull bunches at atime with the other hand. The ripe berries will easily fall off thebranches, while the berries that aren’tfully ripened will remain attached to thebush.

- The biggest clue in determining if aberry is ripe is its color. Ripe berrieswill be plump with a light blue or graycolor. If there is still a hint of red in theberry, it isn’t fully ripened yet.

- Whether eating them fresh out of thebucket or incorporating them intoeveryday cooking, gardeners can takefull advantage of the fruits of their labor
