“TO DREAM THE IMPOSSI-BLE DREAM” – DREAM ACT

SUPPORTERS PRESS ONSupporters of the Dream Act have re-cently experienced a temporary setbackin their quest for the passage of legisla-tion that will give them legal status and achance to be educated to their highestpotential. My advice to the over 1.5 mil-lion youth that may one day qualify for aspecial immigration status, when it issomeday signed intolaw, is to keep the faith!Keep trying to push theUnited States Congressand convince our Amer-ican nation of yourworth. We are a nationthat is so easily mis-guided by anti-immi-grant propaganda. Ourmajor media networksoften play to the worstfears of Americans byhighlighting the nega-tive elements amongour ethnic group for in-creasing their viewers.Unfortunately, the livesand well-being of ourAmerican nation is atstake.

I find inspiration in a song that has beenvery popular for most Americans of theage group that need convincing of yourcause. I suggest you fortify yourselveswith as many allies as possible and keepmarching for this most worthy cause."The Impossible Dream (The Quest)" isa popular song composed by Mitch Leighwith lyrics written by Joe Darion. It waswritten for the 1965 musical Man of LaMancha. The lyrics are worth memoriz-ing:

To dream the impossible dreamTo fight the unbeatable foeTo bear with unbearable sorrowTo run where the brave dare not goTo right the unrightable wrongTo love pure and chaste from afarTo try when your arms are too wearyTo reach the unreachable star

This is my questTo follow that starNo matter how hopelessNo matter how far

To fight for the rightWithout question or pauseTo be willing to march into HellFor a heavenly cause.

Immigrants have picked up many sup-porters in this latest round of politicalmaneuvering led by Senate MajorityLeader, Harry Reid and Supported by Sen-ators on both sides of the isle. Themovement is gaining a growing numberof “star power” advocates from Holly-wood and the Military. Keep Dreaming!Keep politically active toward the Novem-ber elections!

Recently, former Secretary of State retiredGeneral, Colin Powell called for Republi-

cans to stop driving theanti-immigrant band-wagon and urged sup-port for passage of the Dream Act. Heurged Americans to recognize the impor-tance of immigrants to our economy andour future. He reminded Americans thatour population is an aging group and that

without youthful, well-ed-ucated minorities in ourlabor force, we will sufferthe fate of Europe andJapan. This should be awake-up call for America. Our former General ColinPowell said: “America isgoing to be a minoritynation in one more gen-eration. Our minoritiesare not getting educatedwell enough now. Fiftypercent of our minoritykids are not finishinghigh school. We’ve gotto invest in education. We should use theDREAM Act as one way todo it…”

General Colin Powell is one of my heroes. He is a moderate Republican and servedour nation in wartime. We should listento his message and take necessary stepsto insure that all of our children arehighly educated. Moderate Hispanic Re-publicans should be applauding his ef-forts and speak out in support! I respecthim because he is helping to change theRepublican Party from within.

Local efforts for immigration reform andimproving the education of all studentsshould be a priority we set as a commu-nity. Perhaps with a more concerted ef-fort from our “community leaders” andSpanish press we can overcome the re-cent losses of our youth to street rivalryviolence. We could start by limiting oursensationalism of gangs on the frontpages of Spanish tabloids! Leadership re-quires one to take positions on issuesand confront those who stand in the wayof equity and equality!

Where are you going to be on this cam-paign to improve the education of ourchildren? Don’t sell us out! Stand up andmeet the challenge! Education is the keyto preserving democracy and keeping ournation strong! We cannot continue to ac-cept local dropout conditions and thesegregation of our high school Hispanicchildren in Michigan’s poorest perform-ing high schools! We must advocate forthe hiring of teachers who speak the lan-guages of our children and English in theclassroom. A strong Bilingual EducationProgram and multi-cultural curriculumare essential to supporting minority chil-dren in our classrooms. School districtleaders sometimes are not supportive ofbilingual education and multicultural cur-riculum. Unfortunately, they can be asblind as the bigoted legislators that re-fuse to pass the DREAM Act.

Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Grand Rapids during the turbulent 1960s, Carmen has been anadvocate for removing barriers that are faced by immigrants in our community and our schools.

She has worked for the Grand Rapids Public Schools in various capacities including Adult Educa-tion Teacher, Secondary Supervisor for English Language Learners, and Assistant Principal.

She is currently, Principal at Southwest Community Campus- one of Grand Rapids Public School’stheme schools. SWCC is the leading dual immersion program in West Michigan. The programsand grade levels at SWCC have grown over the years and Ms. Fernandez has helped build uponthe previous successes of the unique school. She said “We service over 700 students from PreK-8th grade.”

The model we use has been researched to be the most effective program for English LanguageLearners. At SWCC, all students become bilingual and bi-literate. Our Spanish-speaking studentsarrive in school with a confidence and pride of their culture and language; rather than being the stu-dents whose self-esteem is jeopardized due to their lack of academic English. Other subtractivemodels are slowly stripping our students of their native language and the valuable skill of bilingual-ism.

SWCC monolingual English speakers assimilate the Spanish language quickly with the assistanceof their peers and their bilingual endorsed teachers. For this population bilingualism happens with-out repercussions, students are self- confident and excited about learning a new language. The Community Voice/La Voz Magazine is proud to highlight an true advocate for children!

The years had passed without feeling it. One by one, two by two, sorrow by sor-row and from six to nine, became ten. “These things happen!” said my friendElisa, while we reminisced about the past. She was ten years older than I was butwe had both been through the same thing for ten years. She was pleasant andtolerant. I was conscious and decided. She talked while I thought. She laughedwhen I cried.

I knew what Elisa felt, but she would not bring herself to realize it. Ithas now been two years that we’ve known each other and threemonths that I haven’t seen the man that had been my husband. Al-ways trying to hide it with the smoky veil that hid her eyes and heranswers.

“Marriage is like that, our husbands are always hot tempered andwomanizers, because that’s how men are. Sometimes they’re out ofline, they hit you, but, but…” and she couldn’t say anymore, therewas nothing more to say. She would always stop at that point, like atthat point they’d hide, afraid, the words, and the justifications. Shelowered her face and was silent. I knew the routine, I knew the di-rection of her memory, and I almost visualized it.

The scene: A dimmed room, clean bed, just the way he liked it,ironed sheets, like he demanded, and her, naked on the left sideof the bed the way he demanded it. Pretending to sleep, the wayshe always waited for him. The door opens, and a shaking body;formlessness of dimmed light, cold hands and alcohol on hisbreath he forcefully gets closer to her body. “N-n-not n-n-now!”Elisa stuttered, stiff with fear. A long pause, and then the reac-tion to those words; shoving, yelling, insults, screaming… cry-ing.

They say dreams don’t cost a thing, but to Elisa, dreams costher everything, she closed her eyes and lost herself, she stoodstill for a moment, then her body starts to tremble, and sheturned pale, lifeless, as if with every dream, she died alittle inside. Her hands shook, and she laughed nerv-ously.

She took a sip of her untouched drink, she drank itwith decision as if with it, she would escape, getting in-side her body, feeling the warmth that consumed her andliberated her from the cold intense pain, causing her chest toshake. It was three in the afternoon; the bar was empty, theglasses were empty, as were we.That night, I went to bed as always, but something had changed.I could feel it. I breathed it. I laid down and understood.

If I could take a step, I could take two, or even three, and thenmany more. That hot-tempered, narcissistic ghost, that haunted myhouse, became weak upon my decision. I saw it repulsively andeven felt sorry for him, poor him, he was shrinking, forming his truedimension; he cannot borrow my strength any longer and I watchedas he retreated.

Rethinking Columbus: Discover the American Indian

Perspective

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Dee Ann Sherwood BosworthDirector, Intercultural Training616.331.5034 - [email protected]

Allendale, Michigan – “In fourteen hundred ninety-two Columbus sailed the oceanblue . . .” are the beginning lyrics to a short song that gets embedded into theminds of American students during their early formative years. Unfortunately, thesong’s suggestion of Christopher Columbus’ “discovery” of America forms thebasis of a distorted worldview regarding the western hemisphere that stays a life-time. The doctrine of “discovery” by Columbus is completely rejected by AmericanIndians.

On Monday, October 11, 2010, Grand Valley State University will present “Rethink-ing Columbus: Discover the American Indain Perspective” at two programs to pres-ent the American Indian perspective to help dispel the theory Columbusdiscovered America. The program will be presented in three sections: 1) a seriesof video clips on the American Indian perspective of Columbus Day; 2) a short skitre-enacting the arrival of Columbus to the western hemisphere, with a new twist.Columbus is met by the American Indian Movement and 3) a panel discussion.

The re-enactment will be based on historic events— but given the separation oftime and place—the eras will merge into a stimulating discourse. The skit will pro-vide fodder for some “what ifs.” Given the current climate in America today regard-ing immigration laws, it is interesting to think about what would have happened in1492 if the indigenous peoples had strong immigration laws or if the U.S. Depart-ment of Homeland Security existed then.

The panel, which will discuss perceptions of the skit and the worldview of Ameri-can Indians regarding the legacy of Columbus. The panel will consist of severalAmerican Indian leaders and a non-Indian history professor. Levi Rickert, the for-mer executive director of the North American Indian Center of Grand Rapids, willmoderate the panel discussion.

The first program will be at noon in the Loosemore Auditorium, DeVos Center(Grand Rapids campus). The late afternoon program begins at 4 p.m. in the LouisArmstrong Auditorium (Allendale campus). Both programs are open to GVSU stu-dents, faculty, and staff. Additionally, the general public is welcome.. Both pro-grams are free.

Saginaw tops list of most violent city in America, despiteoverall crime drop – Flint and Detroit in top 10 too!

SAGINAW — Despite a 24 percent decline in violent crime, federal sta-tistics show that in 2009 Saginaw remained the most violent city percapita in America, compared to cities with populations greater that50,000.

Saginaw is one of four Michigan cities to crack the nation’s top 10most violent cities last year.

Camden, N.J., second, and St. Louis, Mo., third, round out the topthree most violent cities in the country, while Flint and Detroit — one-time industrial powerhouses, now decaying urban centers — round outthe top five; and Pontiac is seventh.

Of 1,393 violent crimes reported in Saginaw by the FBI, the agency re-ported 11 murders or incidents of non-negligent manslaughter, 37forcible rapes, 256 robberies and 1,089 aggravated assaults.

Each year when Crime in the United States is published, some entitiesuse reported figures to compile rankings of cities and counties. Theserough rankings provide no insight into the numerous variables thatmold crime in a particular town, city, county, state, or region. Conse-quently, they lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses that oftencreate misleading perceptions adversely affecting communities andtheir residents. Valid assessments are possible only with careful studyand analysis of the range of unique conditions affecting each local lawenforcement jurisdiction. The data user is, therefore, cautionedagainst comparing statistical data of individual reporting units fromcities, metropolitan areas, states, or colleges or universities solely onthe basis of their population coverage or student enrollment.

Below are the top ten most violent cities in the U.S., based on violentcrimes reported per resident in cities with populations in excess of50,000:

New Census Data Underscores Growing En-trepreneurial Power of Latinos

New data released recently by the U.S. CensusBureau highlights the rapidly growing eco-nomic power of Latino-owned businesses inthe United States.According to the Bu-reau’s 2007 Surveyof Business Owners, there were 2.3 mil-lion Latino-ownedbusinesses in thecountry as of 2007,which generated$345.2 billion insales and employed1.9 million people. Moreover, the num-ber of Latino-ownedbusinesses grew by43.7 percent be-tween 2002 and 2007, which was more thantwice the national average. In other words, the Latino community tends to be highly entre-preneurial, and the businesses created by Lati-nos sustain large numbers of jobs.

While Latino-owned businesses accounted for8.3 percent of all nonfarm businesses in theUnited States as a whole in 2007, they com-prised a much higher share of businesses inmany states and cities. For instance:Latino-owned businesses were 23.6 percent ofall businesses in New Mexico, 22.4 percent inFlorida, 20.7 percent in Texas, 16.5 percent inCalifornia, and 10.7 percent in Arizona as of

2007.Latino-owned businesses were 59.8 percent ofall businesses in El Paso (Texas), 39.4 percent

in San Antonio(Texas), 23.3 per-cent in Houston(Texas), 23.1 per-cent in Albuquerque(New Mexico), and21.0 percent in LosAngeles (California)as of 2007.

Given that the ma-jority of Latinos areimmigrants or thechildren of immi-grants, their entre-preneurial

contributions to the U.S. economy should bean integral part of the debate over the eco-nomics of immigration. Yet the role thatLatino-owned businesses play in growing theeconomy and creating jobs is often over-looked. As the new census data illustrates, however, the entrepreneurship of the Latinocommunity is a powerful economic force thatcan not be ignored. Even though the recentrecession has undoubtedly hit the Latino busi-ness community hard, the fact remains that, without Latino businesses, the United Stateswould have a smaller economy and fewer jobs. This is a basic economic truth which many na-tivist groups seem unable to grasp.

The report, “A Stronger Nation Through Edu-cation,” is a national call to action to increasecollege graduation rates throughout theUnited States. It says the U.S. “risks an un-precedented shortage of college-educatedworkers in coming years.” It recommendscommunities strive to have60 percent of their adult resi-dents possess a college de-gree by 2025.The Lumina report includes atwo-page report on eachstate, with some county-leveldata. Among the findings:Nationally, 37.9 percent ofAmericans age 25 to 64 haveat least a two- or four-year de-gree. In Michigan, 35.6 percent of adults have de-grees, which ranks Michigan 33rd among the50 states. The report also suggested that Michiganshould work on narrowing the gap in degreeattainment between different ethnic groups.About 69 percent of the state’s Asian resi-dents have a college degree, compared to 38percent of whites, 23 percent of blacks and21 percent of Hispanics. The Lumina Foundation report said that col-lege graduation rates are increasing “mod-estly” in Michigan right now, and at its currentpace, 43 percent of Michigan adults will havedegrees by 2025.

MICHIGAN SCHOOLS FAILURE ANDDROPOUT RATES NEED IMMEDIATE FIX

The easiest way Michigan could improve itsnumbers, the report said, is reducing its col-lege-dropout rate. Right now, about 25 per-

cent of the state’s adultpopulation has some col-lege, but no degree.

“If only a small portion ofthis group could be enticedto return to college to com-plete either a two- or four-year degree, it would go along way to helping Michi-gan” in its future workforce

needs, the report said.

By 2018, 62 percent of Michigan jobs will re-quire postsecondary education, said the re-port by the Lumina Foundation for Education, which is based in Indianapolis.

“Between now and 2018, Michigan will needto fill about 1.3 million vacancies resultingfrom job creation, work retirements and otherfactors,” the report said. “Of these job vacan-cies, 836,000 will require postsecondary cre-dentials, while only about 491,000 areexpected to be filled by high school gradu-ates or dropouts.”

DREAM Act Delayed in the Senate, But DREAMers ContinueBy Seth Hoy

Recently, the Senate voted 56 to 43 against proceeding to the Defense Au-thorization Act (S. 3454). This procedural vote basically, followed partylines, ends consideration of some critical social issues—offered as amend-ments—that affect the military. Among the amendments not consideredwere a repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the DREAM Act, an immigrationbill that would provide legal status to young people who graduate from highschool and pursue college or military service. While Democrats blame Re-publicans for prioritizing procedure over policy and Republicans blame De-mocrats for trying to shore up the Latino vote before midterms, its theroughly 800,000 undocumented students who should blame Congress for itsinability to legislate.

Ever since Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), announced that hewould attach the DREAM Act as an amendment to the Defense Authorizationbill, a barrage of statements and accusation have been hurled from bothsides of the aisle. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) called Senator Reid’s DREAMAct amendment “his effort to get re-elected” and added that DREAM was “to-tally unrelated to national defense.” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell(R-KY) called the DREAM amendment “extraneous” and said it has “nothing todo” with the military. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) ac-cused Republicans of making an “empty argument” for voting against themotion and urged them to “stop hiding in the shadows.”

But where does that leave the approximately 114,000 potential beneficiaries with at least an as-sociate’s degree who would be immediately eligible for conditional legal permanent resident(LPR) status? Where does that leave the other 612,000 potential beneficiaries who would be im-mediately eligible for conditional status because they already have a high school diploma orGED? And where does that leave the 934,000 other children under 18 who would be eligible forconditional LPR status in the future?

Following the Senate’s vote against the motion to proceed with the Defense Authorization bill,Senator Durbin, co-sponsor of the DREAM Act, gave an impassioned speech promising theDREAM Act students that he will continue to fight for them.

I would say to my friends and colleagues onboth sides of the aisle, where is the justicein this decision? At least have the courageto let us bring this matter to the floor andstand up and vote no… It is inconsistentwith the spirit and the history of this cham-ber where we deliberate, debate and vote.

I will tell those following this debate … mypromise to them is this: as long as I canstand behind this desk and grab this micro-phone and use my powers as a UnitedStates Senator, I will be pushing for thisDREAM Act. It is my highest priority. It is amatter of simple American justice…. Forthose who are so sad today, take heart. To-morrow is another day…and we’ll be thereto fight for you. And many others will joinus. Don’t give up your dream to be part ofthis great nation.

Sen. Harry Reid also vowed to keep fighting for the DREAM Act:I want everyone within the sound of my voice to understand how much I appreciate, and thou-sands and thousands of others, Senator Durbin’s advocacy on this issue. But I also want every-one within the sound of my own voice to know that we’re going to vote on the DREAM Act, it’sonly a question of when. That’s all this is about, basic fairness. But this isn’t the end of this. We’re going to continue to move on.

Maybe Congressional promises to keep fighting for the DREAM Act are enough; maybe theyaren’t. But what the DREAMers can take heart in is the energy and enthusiasm they reverberatedthrough the Senate this week. Because of their efforts, more people today understand the im-portance of DREAM to our economy, our military, and the future of our country than ever be-fore. Their energy, creativity, and commitment illustrates precisely why they will eventuallyprevail—they are willing to fight for their American DREAM.

Colin Powell, Mili-tary Personnel

Make Case for theDREAM Act

Recently, former Secretary of State and retired General,Colin Powell, not only called for Republicans to stop driv-ing the anti-immigrant bandwagon, but made an eco-nomic case for immigration as well as the DREAM Act.The DREAM Act was attached to the Department of De-fense (DOD) authorization bill; the Senate votes tomor-row on whether to proceed to debate on the floorwith the DOD bill. Meanwhile, as critics of the DREAMAct—which provides legal status to qualifying undocu-mented youth who have graduated high school and wantto attend college or join the military—continue todecry that it is “extraneous” and “has nothing to do”with the military, a host of former military personnel her-alded the DREAM Act as a smart way to recruit capable,mission-ready soldiers.

Former Gen. Colin Powell made an appearance on Meetthe Press to urge Republicans to stop throwing pro-gressive legislation—like the DREAM Act—under the busin the name of politics.

They’ve [Republicans] got to take a hard look at some ofthe positions they’ve been taking. We can’t be anti-im-migration, for example, because immigrants are fuelingthis country. Without immigrants, America would be likeEurope or Japan with an aging population and no youngpeople coming in to take care of it. We have to educateour immigrants … the DREAM Act is one way we can dothis.

America is going to be a minority nation in one moregeneration. Our minorities are not getting educated well

enough now. Fifty percent of our minority kids arenot finishing high school. We’ve got to invest in edu-cation. We should use the DREAM Act as one way todo it …

Meanwhile, those who have made it their mission tostymie any progressive legislation in this administra-tion have repeatedly stated that the DREAM Act,

which they lovingly refer to as “illegal alien amnesty,”has no place on the Defense authorization bill. Unfortu-nately for them, the Department of Defense’s Office ofthe Undersecretary for Personnel and Readiness actuallyrecommended the passage of the DREAM Act in theirFY2010-12 Strategic Plan, calling it a “smart way” to“sustain quality assurance” when recruiting an all volun-teer force.

Numerous former military personnel, such as retiredLieutenant Colonel, Margaret Stock, have publically en-dorsed the DREAM Act as a benefit to the U.S. ArmedForces:Passage of the DREAM Act would directly benefit Ameri-can national defense by enlarging the pool of highlyqualified, US-educated ‘green card’ recruits for the USArmed Forces. Rather than having these US-educatedyoung people sent back to countries they can’t remem-ber–where they will no doubt be forced to serve in for-eign militaries and other foreign organizations–they canput their talents to use for the benefit of the Americanpeople and the All Volunteer Force.

The Senate voted against proceeding with the DOD billwhich derailed the DREAM Act and other amendmentsfrom making it to the floor. Hopefully, voters will takenote of the senators who may opposed cloture —espe-cially those who voted for it in 2007 when the DREAMAct was attached to the defense authorization meas-ure—and remember their flip-flop come election day.

The Hispanic Festival Committee organized andcelebrated its annual Mexican Independence DayCelebration in downtown Grand Rapids. Therewere hundreds of people that braved the coldevenings to celebrate the annual celebration andperhaps the festival could have been a larger suc-cess had it been blessed with better weather. TheHispanic Festoval Committee is a non-profit or-ganization that has recruited several area busi-nesses to assist with the costs of the celebration.

This vertical structure will be placedin Cotonduba Island. It will be both a

observation Tower, and a welcomesign for the visitors arriving by airand by sea at Rio de Janeiro, wherethe Olympic Games 2016 will takeplace.

The project is from Zurique, and uti-lizes solar energy during the day withits solo power panels, to pump the seawater as seen in the model. The move-ment of the water will be also utilizedto turn the turbines and produce thepower to work the system at nighttime.

In the Solo City Tower is the Cafe an-fiteatre, auditórium, shops etc. liftswill take the visitors to the top, wherethe view will be fantastic, and bungeejumping will have a special platform.

The tower is certainly an interestingand innovative proposal. However, quite a few of the many blog poststhat discuss this project imply that theSolar Tower will definitely be built. Asnoted above, this is not the case. Toreiterate, the Solar Tower is currentlyjust a proposal and, in fact, the proj-ect may never go ahead.

Remember that the shortages of flu shots the lastfew years left many parents scrambling to find flushots for their kids. Last year was supposed to bedifferent though, with over 130 million doses offlu vaccine being available. Having to produce the2009 H1N1 swine flu vaccine got in the way ofmaking seasonal flu vaccine though, and someparents had a hard time getting their kids a flushot when they wanted to.Flu Shots

With over 155 million doses of seasonal flu vaccineavailable this year and several new flu vaccinemanufacturers, everyone should be able to get aflu shot this year. And that is good news, espe-cially since the latest flu vaccine recommendationsfrom the Advisory Committee on ImmunizationPractices (ACIP) now state that all persons 6months and older should get a yearly flu shot.

This is a great time to start planning on whereyour family will get a flu shot -- before seasonal fluseason starts.

Although kids used to start getting their flu shot inOctober or November, the CDC now advocates 'be-ginning use of seasonal vaccine as soon as avail-able, including in September or earlier,' whichmeans that some pediatricians may start offeringflu shots now, even before kids go back to school.Flu Shot Shortages?

If your child does need a flu shot, your pediatricianis the best place to start looking, but if they aren'toffering flu vaccine this year, you might check withyour local health department, hospital, or pharma-cies, and get one wherever you can.

Fortunately, no one is talking about seasonal flushot shortages this year. In fact, many pediatri-cians may start giving seasonal flu shots early thisyear, as soon as they get their shipments.

Remember that with the latest recommendations,it is recommended that all children between theages of 6 months and 18 years now get a seasonalflu vaccine each year. Fortunately, kids won't haveto get an additional swine flu vaccine this year. The seasonal flu vaccine now includes protectionagainst the 2009 H1N1 virus.Find Flu Shots

In addition to your pediatrician, other places tolook if you can't find a flu vaccine for your childmight include:

* the American Lung Association web site (www.lungusa.org ) and their online flu shot loca-tor.

* Maxim Health Systems, a nationwide providerof flu shot clinics.

* your local or state health department (this isoften your best bet to get a flu shot).

* flu shot clinics advertised at pharma-cies, grocery stores, community centers, churches, office parks, shopping malls, etc.

Keep in mind that many places that offerflu shots outside a doctor's office maynot give them to young children, espe-cially if they are under four years old, socall ahead. Or see if they will give youryounger child a flu shot if you have a pre-scription from your pediatrician.FluMist

FluMist, the nasal spray flu vaccine willagain be in good supply this year, and

may be a good option for healthy people from theages of 2 to 49 years. And because they have low-ered the price to make it more competitive with flushots, it may be a more economical option too.Plus, FluMist is an especially good option forhealthy people aged 2 to 49 years who are care-givers or household contacts of infants less than 6months old and most health care workers, as longas they don't care for severely immuno-compro-mised patients.

Problems Finding Flu Shots

The bottom line right now is that there shouldn'tbe any shortages this year, but in case there aresome flu shot delays, which seem to come up eachyear, if you have an opportunity to get a flu shotfor your high-risk child, take it. You might not getanother chance if problems do develop as theyhave in the last few years. Also, since childrenunder age 9 years who are getting a flu vaccine forthe first time or who haven't had a swine flu vac-cine need two doses, it may be a good idea to geta seasonal flu vaccine as early as possible, so thatthey are fully protected before flu season starts.

Don't be surprised if you can't find a flu shot rightnow, as shipments are just beginning. Deliveries offlu shots usually continue through December andinto February, so even doctors and clinics whodon't have any flu shots right now, might get somesoon. Or ask to be put on a waiting list and to becalled as soon as any flu shots come in.Influenza Vaccine Availability Tracking System

In addition to the problems manufacturing the pe-diatric flu shot a few years ago, as in past years, there was a problem with distributing flu shots todoctors. This is why you see some pediatricianswith plenty of flu shots for all of their patients andother offices with a limited supply. Or some pedia-tricians with no flu shots, but a grocery store downthe road having daily flu clinics for whoever wantsone.

Hopefully the addition of more flu shot manufac-turers will help to resolve this problem in the fu-ture, but until then, the CDC and AMA have set upthe Influenza Vaccine Availability Tracking Systemto try and match up doctors and flu shot distribu-tors to help make sure all flu shots are used by thepatients who need them. If your pediatrician does-n't have any flu shots, you might make them awareof this service and see if he can order some.

Cocina

3 tablespoons olive oil1/4 cup shoyu sauce (or soy sauce)2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar2 tablespoons brown sugar (or maple syrup)3 tablespoons adobo sauce from a can of chipotle peppers8 ounces of tempeh, cut into 1/3-inch thick strips

1 small basket of cherry tomatoes (2 cups)1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil olive oil1 tablespoon brown sugar (or maple syrup)scant 1/2 teaspoon of salt

1 small head of romaine lettuce, cored, then cut into 1/4-inch ribbons1-2 large avocados, mashed with a pinch of salt just before assembling4 or 8 extra-thin slices of hearty whole grain bread, well toasted

Preheat oven to 350F degrees.

Whisk together the 3 tablespoons of olive oil, shoyu, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar and adobosauce. Pour 1/3 of the tempeh marinade into an 8x8 baking dish (or something comparable) - youwant a dish that is just big enough to hold the tempeh in a single layer - this way it will be fully en-veloped by the marinade. Pour the remaining marinade over the top of the tempeh, cover and keepin the refrigerator for a couple hours, overnight or until ready to use.

While the tempeh is marinating, go ahead and roast the tomatoes. Cut each tomato in half andarrange them in a large oven-proof baking dish. Mix together the olive oil, sugar, and salt and pourthis over the tomatoes. Gently toss them a bit, making sure they all get coated, finishing with eachtomato facing cut-side up. Place in the oven and bake for 45 minutes or so, until the tomatoes areshrunken and sweet.

When the tempeh is done marinating heat a large pan over medium-high heat and cook the tempehslices for a few minutes on each side. You may need to do this in batches if you don't have a bigenough pan. Set the tempeh slices aside until you are ready to assemble the sandwiches.

To assemble each sandwich take one slice of bread and slather a generous layer of mashed avo-cado. Place a small helping of the shredded lettuce on top of the avocado, a few tomatoes, then afew slices of the tempeh, and more tomatoes. Enjoy either open faced or topped with another avo-cado-slathered bread slice.

TLT Sandwich Recipe
