La catarsis es un ritual interior purificador, un

sentimiento de liberación de gran significado

personal. Es la eliminación de los recuerdos que

perturban la conciencia, canalizados a través de

vivencias causadas por cualquier manifestación de

carácter.

Así, nuestra hermosa Barcelona es el

sujeto de muchas de las catarsis de

quienes vivimos en ella. Porque su

constante cambio y su vertiginosa

vibra nos nutre constantemente, nos

transforma a través de sus estados de

ánimo, diferentes entre sí a lo largo

del tiempo.

La revista Urban Catarsis BCN proyecta, plantea y analiza Barcelona

como una ciudad cosmopolita, pluricultural donde convergen las

corrientes artísticas más innovadoras de Europa. De esta manera,

planteamos una ventana para quienes coincidimos en Barcelona,

para los distintos estilos de vida y diferentes maneras de ver al

mundo, así como las nuevas expresiones artísticas que coexisten

en la ciudad.

Es por eso que en este momento y en esta ciudad corresponde

la catarsis, emanar libertad de los poros, que la piel de cada

uno salga y que se reestablezca la conexión con el cuerpo.

Que las fronteras asciendan más allá de la epidermis, de

los sentidos y que la memoria sensorial esté lista para

almacenar celosamente cada estímulo.

Hay que transformar lo que aturde nuestra mente y

hacer catarsis, la opción de cada uno es simplemente

decidir el sujeto de las liberaciones.

EDITORIAL

Catharsis is a purifying ritual for the inner self, a feeling of liberation with a great personal meaning. It is the elimination of the memories which disturb the consciousness, channelled through experiences brought about by any kind of demonstration of character.

Thus, our beautiful Barcelona is the subject of many of the catharses of those who live in this city. Because its’ constant change and vertiginous vibe feed us all the time, transforming us through moods which change or vary through time.

The magazine Urban Catharsis BCN projects, proposes and analyses Barcelona as a cosmopolitan and multi-cultural city, which is home to the most innovative artistic movements in Europe. Therefore, we intend to make this magazine a window for those of us brought together in Barcelona, for the different lifestyles and ways of seeing the world, as well as the new artistic expressions which co-exist in the city.

That is why we find catharsis in this moment and in this city, emanating freedom through the pores, so the skin of every one of us can peel off to re-establish the connection with the body. And the borders rise beyond the epidermis and the senses, making the sensorial memory ready to jealously store every stimulus.

We must transform what dazzles our mind and make this catharsis, and as we do so, the option for each one of us is simply to decide the object of our new-found liberation.

aryanour djalaliAryanour Djalali (31) originario de Palma de Mallorca y ascendencia iraní, modestamente nos describe su experiencia en la arquitectura como “reciente y muy intensa”, y desde luego no hay mejor manera de definir su trayectoria, pues a su corta edad ha trabajado en diseño de mobiliario, decorado de interiores, rehabilitado edificios de viviendas y comerciales, proyectado casas, edificios, hoteles, resorts, oficinas, etc. Su estudio –DNA Arquitectos- ganó un concurso contra Lamela (estudio de Madrid) para el diseño de una comunidad residencial de 1000 viviendas en Budapest-Hungría; también ha llevado el proyecto de varios resorts turísticos en República Dominicana, Costa Rica o Brasil, pasando desde el diseño de diversas discotecas cerca de Barcelona, hasta el diseño de un sofá para el plató de varios programas televisivos, entre ellos el de Eva Hache.

Aryanour Djalali (31), born in Palma de Mallorca of Iranian ascendancy, modestly comments that his experience in architecture is “recent and very intense”, and there is indeed no better way to define his trajectory, given that in his tender years he has designed furniture, decorated interiors, renovated houses and commercial buildings, projected new houses, buildings, hotels, resorts, offices, etc. His company – DNA Architects – won a contest against Madrid’s Lamela firm for the design of 1,000 homes in Budapest, Hungary; they have also participated in a project comprising of several tourist resorts in Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Brazil, as well as designing different discotheques in Barcelona and a sofa which can be seen in various television programmes, including that of Eva Hache.

Con un currículum como este vale la pena escuchar a Aryanour y algunas de las premisas que le han permitido cosechar tantos éxitos: “Inicié como muchos arquitectos de vocación, sin padrinos, durmiendo poco y con mucha ilusión. Desde el principio generé, eso sí, una base de contactos, contactos de particulares y profesionales. Creo mucho en la Ley de la Atracción y gracias a todas ellas he ido generando mi negocio. Las personas en definitiva hacen las empresas, los negocios se hacen entre personas y yo intento captar sus sensibilidades para llegar a ellas... el secreto está en cómo atraer y traducir esa sensibilidad y convertirla en arte desde una perspectiva de negocio.”

With a CV like this, it is worth listening to Aryanour and some of the ideas which have allowed his to sow the seeds of success. “I started like many architects, with no funding, sleeping very little and very excited. From the beginning I put together a list of contacts, professionals and private individuals.

I believe strongly in the Law of Attraction and thanks to all of those contacts I have been able to put together my business. It is definitely the people who make the companies, businesses are formed by people and I try to pick up on the sensitivities to get to them.... the secret is in how you attract and translate that sensitivity, and transform it into art from a business perspective.”

“Barcelona because it is the Mecca of design, it is a city of opportunities, a crucible of cultures, where you can also have fun and where you can bring together pleasure and business, which is precisely my philosophy of wellbeing in the age we are living in. In BCN I like to do a lot of things, but what I most like is to discover the city and enjoy it every day a little more, it is a city full of corners which the locals never visit or don’t even know about. What I don’t understand about Barcelona is how, being such a self-proclaimed open city, it tends to close its borders, when the richness of an urbanisation is usually linked to its capacity to integrate.”

Para los artistas sus formas de hacer arte van ligadas a sus experiencias en la vida, y éstas se reflejan en sus cuadros, esculturas, música, etc. Por ello yo apuesto por viajar, visitar nuevos lugares, conocer otras culturas, otras gentes y abrirse para seguir aprendiendo experiencias, nuevas sensaciones que al final aplicas en tu vida, tanto personal como profesional.”

“Nueve tías en el escenario no dejan indiferente a nadie”, comentan sus integrantes al comienzo de esta entrevista. Y es que Rootsmama nos trae al panorama musical barcelonés una propuesta fresca, llena de buena energía y conexión entre sus integrantes. Además de ser todas mujeres son de diversas partes del mundo, con su núcleo en común de darse a conocer como banda en esta ciudad. Una mezcla entre reggae, hip hop, funk, soul y jazz , marca el estilo de su música y su performance involucra también otras disciplinas como la danza y el video.

“Nine girls on a stage can’t leave anyone indifferent”, the band members say at the beginning of the interview. Rootsmama bring a fresh sound –full of positive energy and with a strong connection between the band members– to Barcelona’s musical panorama.

These women from different parts of the world have come together to form their band in this city. Their sound is a mix between reggae, hip hop, funk, soul and jazz, and their performance includes other disciplines such as dance and video.

Aunque nos confiesan entre risas que nunca se “han agarrado de las greñas”, coinciden en que es diferente trabajar sólo con chicas, pero resaltan la importancia del respeto y la risa imprescindible tanto en sus ensayos, como en su puesta en escena.

Sus integrantes tienen variadas experiencias en el ámbito musical: desde Radio Malanga (Susana Abellán y Sol Homar) hasta el jazz más purista, como es el caso de la teclista Ágata Palencia. La banda se fue conformando de manera natural entre improvisaciones espontáneas en Chaselong y el simple boca a boca, a principios del 2006; desde entonces han pasado por los escenarios de El Foro (born), Badalona (...), Banda Sonora, Les enfants y SideCar. Con miras a producir un disco (aunque quieren tener todo “más redondo” antes de hacerlo), Actualmente se les puede ver cada miércoles a las 23:00 en LeKasbah.

Lo que les gusta de BCN:

“La cultura, la gente, el color, la forma de vestir”, “...hay muchísima gente buscando su camino desde un lugar sincero y sano”, “BCN es una puerta abierta a muchas cosas y hay mayor concentración de gente con hambre de hacer cosas creativas, bailar, componer....”, “es un núcleo enriquecedor y permite un intercambio de todo brutal...es accesible y tiene todo, mar, montaña y buen clima... siempre hay actividad...”

Catarsis:

“Hay una energía muy rara pero muy buena, como de aquí (señala el pecho), que cada día continúa gestándose” .... “Hay mucho amor y creo que se nota en el escenario,... transmitimos belleza en su estado natural, hay una conexión muy bonita entre todas y eso se transmite al público” .... “Además tenemos como un símbolo muy bonito, que la banda nace cuando Sol nos comunica que está embarazada, y Nara su hija, tiene la misma edad que Rootsmama”... “El proyecto lo llevamos como un proyecto de grupo, no hay individualismos, y hay mucho talento que se va descubriendo poco a poco”.

Even though they admit laughingly to never having “pulled each other’s hair”, they agree that it is “different” to work only with girls. The girls stress the importance of respect for each other and the “essential laughter” present not only in their rehearsals, but also on stage.

The band members have varied experiences in the musical field: from Radio Malanga (Susana Abellán and Sol Homar) to the purest form of jazz, in the case of keyboardist Ágata Palencia. The band began to take shape naturally through spontaneous improvisations in Chaselong and gradually became known by word of mouth, after forming in early 2006. Since then, they have taken to the stages of El Foro (Born), Badalona (...), Banda Sonora, Les Enfants and SideCar. With a view to making a record (although they want everything to be “more complete” before making one), nowadays they can be seen in LeKasbah every wednesday from 23:00.

What they most like about BCN:

“There is a strange but really good energy, like from here (signalling her chest), which every day continues to breath…” “There is a lot of love and I think you can see that on stage… we transmit beauty in its natural form, there is a very nice connection between all of us and that is transmitted to the public…”

“Also we have a very nice symbol behind us, the band was born when Sol told us she was pregnant, and her daughter Nara is the same age as Rootsmama…”

“The project is a group project for us, there is no individualism, and there is a lot of talent being discovered little by little”.

Lapin Sauvage

Claudio Molina (36), o mejor dicho Lapin Sauvage, prefiere definirse como artista multidisciplinario al mezclar la ilustración, la música y la animación de cartoon. Originario de Buenos Aires, Argentina, obtuvo el título del diseñador gráfico para después colaborar en importantes estudios de diseño de aquel país. Llegó a BCN desde hace casi seis años y actualmente es profesor del IDEP en las cátedras de dirección de arte multimedia y animación multimedia; y en EINA donde dicta la materia de Creación digital en motion graphics. Colabora regularmente con el estudio multidisciplinar Area3 www.area3.net en trabajos para Playstation, Nokia ,Hyundai, Bacardi Murmansk Route, Nena Daconte, Carlos Ann entre otros... Lo que más le gusta al diseñar es trabajar con personajes, quiere ser consecuente con su trabajo, no ser hipócrita...

Claudio Molina (36), better known as Lapin Sauvage, is a qualified graphic designer from Buenos Aires, Argentina, but prefers to describe himself as a multi-disciplined artist, as he is an illustrator, a musician and a cartoon animator. In his country of birth, he worked as a freelance collaborator for several important graphic design studios. Claudio has been living in Barcelona for the last 6 years and is currently a teacher at IDEP, where he gives classes in art and animation multimedia; and in EINA where he teaches Digital creation in motion graphics. He has also collaborated in other projects for Playstation, Nokia and Hyundai Bacardi Murmansk Route, Nena Daconte, Carlos Ann among others.What he likes most in design is working with interesting people, to be consistent, and not hypocritical…

¿Por qué BCN?

“Porque nadie me mira, hay mucha libertad, es buena para empezar proyectos; en BCN todo es realizable... ¿qué me gusta hacer aquí?... barbacoas en mi terraza..., aunque la carne no es tan buena (como en Argentina)…, BCN está llena de purpurina, y muchas veces rascas y no hay nada en el fondo”

Why BCN?

“Because nobody looks at me, there is a lot of freedom… it is a great place to start projects, in BCN everything is possible… what do I like to do here? ….have barbecues on my terrace… even though the meat is not as good (as in Argentina)… BCN is full of glitter, but often when you scratch it away there is nothing behind it”

“Siempre que tengo una idea que me gusta, cuando la realizo hago catarsis..., también con mi música que es muy agresiva y al terminar los músculos se relajan y ya..., una vez hecha una animación, me relajo al verla terminada. La música también juega un papel muy importante, todo sale a partir de allí, sin la música no podría hacer nada, la mayo-ría de colaboraciones en las que trabajo surgen a partir de la música..., aunque para inspirarme siempre pienso en mi mujer Sophie, ella es mi musa, Barcelona nos ha unido”

“Every time I have an idea that I like and I work on it, that is catharsis for me… also with my music, which is very aggressive, and at the end (of the set) the muscles relax again… once the animation is done, seeing it finished relaxes me as well... Music also plays a very important part, everything comes from there… without music I couldn’t do anything… the majority of the collaborations I have worked on have come about through music, but to get inspired i always think of my wife Sopgie, she’s my muse and Barcelona brought us toguether”

Mila Requeijo (28), nacida en (como ella denomina) Buenos Fucking Aires, Argentina, lleva cuatro años y pico viviendo en BCN. Al hacer la pregunta obligada acerca de los “estudios” nos responde: “..uff, terminados o sin terminar?, profesorado de piano, tres años de medicina y cuatro de fotografía en BCN... incluyendo especializaciones en moda, desnudo y un master en diseño, por ahora...”. Después de cambiar los libros de medicina por una cámara reflex ha participado en diversas exposiciones colectivas e individuales tanto en Argentina como en Barcelona, donde se exhibieron fotografías de su reportaje sobre Japón en el centro Amics de la UNESCO. También expuso su trabajo en Austin, Texas y en L.A, California participando en un fotomontaje para la presentación del film An Inconvenient Truth de Al Gore. Últimamente se dedica, entre otras cosas, a la fotografía de moda trabajando como freelance para editoriales y books de modelos.

Mila Requeijo (28), born in (what she calls) Buenos Fucking Aires, Argentina, has been living in BCN for just over four years. In response to the obligatory question about her “studies”, she replies “… uff, you mean the ones I have completed or those I still haven’t finished?? Piano teaching, 3 years of medicine and 4 of photography in BCN, including fashion and nude, and graphic design… so far…” Having swapped her old medicine books for a reflex camera, Mila has participated in various collective and individual exhibitions in both Argentina and Barcelona, where she exhibited photos from her special report about Japan in the city’s Amics de la UNESCO (Friends of UNESCO) centre. Mila has also exhibited her work in Austin, Texas and in L.A., California, contributing to a photomontage for the presentation of Al Gore’s film An Inconvenient Truth. Lately, she has been working mainly as a freelance fashion photographer for publishing houses and modelling agencies.

“I think photography is a bridge between the reality in my head and the reality which surrounds me. Sometimes it is a means of expressing the scenery inside of us, whereas other times it is a way of reinventing the external landscape. It’s my life in moments captured through a fixed glance. My catharsis resides in this rediscovery of everything which surrounds me, and allowing myself to reinvent it... Muchos conceptos en un mismo espacio: el sustantivo podría ser diversificación. Mental, profundo, melódico, oscuro, rítmico, sensual, electrónico, pop, experimental. Definitivamente Matthew Dear ha sabido conjuntar correctamente distintos matices y facetas de la gama musical contemporánea. Empezando sus producciones en 1999, en 2002 surgió False, el alias con el que conquistó a Minus (y subsello Plus 8), estableciéndose como productor estrella del mínimal más puro. A finales de 2003 lanza su continuamente elogiado primer álbum: Leave Luck to Heave, seguido por Blackstroke en 2004; ambos con fuerte contenido mínimal y editados en Spectral Sound (subsello de Ghostly Internacional). En 2004 continúa con Audion, otra personalidad con la que además de elaborar techno bailable con su toque complejo (influencias de Detroit), juega y recrea completamente producciones ajenas. Many concepts in the same space: the key is perhaps diversification. Mental, deep, melodic, dark, rhythmic, sensual; electronic, pop, experimental. Matthew Dear has definitely been able to successfully combine different shades and aspects from the contemporary music range.

He began his productions in 1999 and in 2002 conquered Minus (and its smaller label Plus 8) under the alias False, establishing himself as a star producer of the purest form of minimal. At the end of 2003, he released his constantly acclaimed first album: Leave Luck to Heaven; followed by Blackstroke in 2004; both with strong minimal content and edited by Spectral Sound, a label owned by Ghostly International. In 2004, he continued with Audion, a new personality which saw him elaborate danceable techno with a complex touch (Detroit influences), playing and recreating other people’s productions. In 2007, he explored his pop side with the album Asa Breed (Ghostly international) and began to tour constantly with his band (Matthew Dear’s Big Hands).

What is therefore surprising is not only Matthew’s production capacity or his ability to reunite different musical figures and personality traits in new sounds, but that he can achieve it all with such quality every time.

False, Matthew Dear’s Big Hands, Audion, Jabberjaw, they are all different; how do they converge? “They are all very different, but they are from somewhere within me. There are certain elements of my musical personality that hide in each one. I guess my overall production technique is in them all. But there is no effort on my behalf to make them similar. I want them to be as different as possible.”

What part of your personality is reflected the most in your music as Audion? “Audion represents the side of me that likes to stay out late. This is my opportunity to make long, rhythmic techno. Making songs for DJs is rewarding. Hearing an Audion song successfully working a dancefloor is fantastic.”

La música electrónica genera nuevas tendencias cada año, y esto no va a cambiar. Mientras que la música sea agradable y rítmica, tendrá éxito. Estoy seguro de que el formato general de house y techno seguirá al menos 20 años más.”

¿Qué productor ha capturado tu atención últimamente?“Me gusta mucho lo que ha hecho Reboot últimamente. Un gran y genial house, combinado con techno. Estas canciones siempre hacen bailar a la gente.”

¿Cómo describirías a Barcelona en una palabra?“Innovadora.”

¿Ahora qué hay para Matthew en 2008? ¿Algún proyecto nuevo?“Siempre estoy trabajando en material nuevo. Espero producir a otros artistas este año. Intentar hacer el álbum de alguien más. También planifico ampliar la banda. Agregar más integrantes. Tengo algunas remezclas también, y sacaré más material de Audion este año. Habrá otro EP de Matthew Dear en otoño también.”

¿Oscuridad o funk? ¿Pop o techno?“Todo.”

¿Qué diferencias hay entre Matthew como productor y como DJ?“Encuentro inspiración en pinchar y eso lo puedo aplicar a mis producciones. Pinchar me permite escuchar música nueva de artistas a través del mundo. Me mantiene informado. Puedo usar esas ideas nuevas más tarde cuando estoy trabajando en el estudio.”

A través de la música, la gente hace catarsis. ¿Qué producción ha significado más en ese sentido? “Yo entiendo la catarsis como una purga de emociones a través de la experiencia de la tragedia. La música no es trágica para mí, sino todo lo contrario. Quizás ir demasiado de gira, estar lejos de casa, y poner mi alma en el escenario durante tantos días del año sea trágico. Pero de esa tragedia llega el éxito.” ¿Crees que hay una diferencia entre los productores americanos y europeos a la hora de crear música? “Definitivamente. Crecer en Europa es muy diferente a crecer en América. Los estilos de vida son muy diferentes, y proporcionan una propuesta diferente a la hora de hacer arte. future of electronic music? Where do you think techno, as a gender, is going? “It’s been changing since day one. Electronic music generates new trends and genres every few years or so, and this won’t stop anytime soon. So long as the music is engaging and rhythmic, it will be successful. I’m sure the overall format of house and techno will be around for at least another 20 years.”

Has any new DJ or producer recently grabbed your attention?“I really like what Reboot has been putting out recently. Very big, groovy house and techno combined. These tracks always get people moving.”

How would you describe Barcelona in one word? “Innovative.”

What’s next for Matthew in 2008? Any new projects? “I’m always working on new material. I hope to produce some other artists this year and try my hand at making someone else’s album. I also plan to expand the band, add more members. I’ve got more remixes on the way as well, and will release more Audion material this year. Expect another Matthew Dear EP to arrive in the fall as well.”

Darkness or funk? Pop or techno? “Everything.”

How does Matthew differ when producing and DJing? “I find inspiration from DJing that I can apply to my productions. DJing allows me to hear other new music from artists around the world. It keeps me aware. I can then use those new ideas later when I’m working in the studio.” Through music people make catharsis. Which production has meant the most for you and been the biggest catharsis? “I understand catharsis to be a purging of emotions through the experience of tragedy. Music isn’t tragic for me, but quite the opposite. Perhaps touring so much, being away from home, and putting my soul on stage for so many days in the year is tragic. But from this tragedy comes success.” Dou you think there is any difference between the way American and European producers (structure and feeling) create music? “Most definitely. Growing up in Europe is very different from growing up in America. The styles of living are very different, and provide for a different approach to making art. The arts and their importance are very often overlooked in America. Schools are dropping their music programmes all the time, and there isn’t much support for artistic education. In Europe and Canada however, the governments often fund musicians and give them grants for their art. This mentality, or lack there of, provides for a different feeling about making music.”

Who has been your biggest influence?“That is a very tough question, as I have so many influences. I listen to music as a teacher. I’m always trying to figure out how somebody did something, and pay attention to the year they did it. Recorded music is a snapshot of a moment in time. Locked into a song or piece is a fingerprint of ideas, instruments, microphones, effects and machines. Brian Eno and Arthur Russell are two of my favourite musicians to analyse, as their music has enormous depth and was made many years ago.”Moving forward in time, after minimal, how do you see the

¿En qué consiste el “Future pop” de su propuesta en esta eraposmoderna? “En realidad la música con la que hemos crecido:música de los 80’s, películas de ciencia ficción como Blade Runnery Escape de New York. Amamos a los compositores de músicapara películas como Vangelis y John Carpenter. En los años 80s,su predicción de cómo sonarían los años 1990 – 2005 era muchomás fria de lo que realmente es.”

Sus conocimientos musicales son un abanico de géneros y estilos. Como estudiantes de música clásica, no son ajenos altrabajo de Beethoven, Stockhausen o Dmitri Shostakovich, ymucho menos fue una limitación para envolverse con músicadel momento. Por el contrario, por las noches disfrutabandesde un buen acid house hasta del glam rock de Bowie y LouReed. Sus intereses eran tan amplios como diferentes que nodudaron en unirse y hacer música juntos.

¿De qué manera les ayuda sus conocimientos de músicaclásica?“Definitivamente nos ayudan a visionar la idea musical demanera más metódica. Pero algunas veces esas reglas restringennuestras ideas más impulsivas. Siempre hay reglas y nuestrascabezas batallan con nuestros instintos y corazones. Electro-disco-indie-rock-pop: the Australian duo The Presetshave opted to fuse these genres to create what theythemselves define as FUTURE POP.

What does the “Future pop” of your proposal consist of in thispost-modern era?

“I think our notion of `future music’ is actually the music that wegrew up on - music from 1980’s science fiction films like BladeRunner and Escape from New York. We love film composerslike Vangelis and John Carpenter. Back in the early 80’s, theirpredictions of what 1990-2005 would sound like were waycooler than what 1990-2005 actually did sound like.

Their musical knowledge is a range of styles and genders. Like classical music students, there are aware of Beethoven, Stockhausen or Dmitri Shostakovich’ s work. As well, by night, they could be found enjoying anything from a good acidhouse set to a classic glam rock number by Bowie or Lou Reed. Theirinterests were as different as they were diverse and the two wastedno time in joining forces to make music together.

How your classical training help you?“The classical training definitely helps us to realise a vision or amusical idea in a very methodical way. But sometimes thoseclassical rules restrict our more impulsive ideas. It’s always rulesand our heads battling with instinct and our hearts. Both areimportant, but finding the balance is tricky sometimes”.

How would you describe the music scene in Australia in comparison with Europe and America?“The Sydney music/club scene is very colourful and really funcompared to a lot of other cities we’ve toured. It definitely feels alot more effortless and carefree here”.

Do you like to be associated with groups like LCD Soundsystem,The Rapture or Cut Copy? or does not like you at all?

What is the worst thing you think people could say after a gig?

“I don’t know really, I’m always hearing about the good things peoplesay about us after our shows. People don’t say bad things”.

Is your music cathartic for you or is it simpler than that?“I think it’s simpler than that. We have music inside us that has tocome out, and if we don’t get it out then we feel grumpy. It’s likedoing a shit. Sometimes you feel happy afterwards, sometimes youdon’t, but you have to get it out of you”.

This brilliant and energetic mix between dance, pop, goth and electro had give them the opportunity to play in the most important music festivals like Monegros, Sonar or FIB. In Rainbows

Esta vez vamos a hablar de uno de los discos más polémicos del 2007. La última producción independiente del grupo británico Radiohead, titulado “In Rainbows”. Y bueno, la polémica se basa principalmente en que a través de la historia, es el primer disco en poderse bajar directamente de Internet previo a su distribución física, y lo más radical fue que el precio lo fijabas tu mismo, acorde a lo que deseabas pagar por la descarga, o incluso podías bajarlo completamente gratis: en realidad algo único pensando en cómo está estructurada la industria discográfica. Esto nos pone a pensar en la dirección que seguirá la comercialización de la música, e incluso en los nuevos formatos, ¿desaparecerá o a qué se reducirá el arte y diseño de los empaques? Sobre esto leí una reflexión que me pareció muy interesante de un periodista británico, cuyo nombre desgraciadamente no puedo recordar, pero decía muy directamente que el lanzamiento con descarga gratuita del álbum “In Rainbows”, era un paso adelante en la tecnología. Sin embargo decía que para las nuevas bandas o artistas solistas era un gancho

al hígado, pues de entrada los de Radiohead ya son millonarios, ya tienen un nombre y una cartera de fans bien definida. Pero para la música nueva puede ser un arma de doble filo pues los limitaría y no podrían llegar a los alcances proyectados, o quizá si y se librarían de manera drástica de los grandes monstruos corporativos. Así mismo las disqueras tomarán sus precauciones y limitarán las inversiones para la nueva música. En fin, es un tema complicado y difícil de predecir, pero de que fue drástico, nos tomó por sorpresa y nos dejó reflexionando, nadie lo duda. Toda esta cortina de humo ha hecho que en lo musical no se haya hablado mucho del disco en sí, y definitivamente es un disco excelente, a opinión propia: el mejor desde O.K. Computer. ¿Qué tiene este disco de interesante?, para mí son dos elementos básicos. El primero tiene que ver con el seguimiento de la propuesta de sus discos anteriores, sin caer en la autocomplacencia. Es decir, se nota evolución y experimentación, sin perder ese estilo que se ha vuelto un género en sí; ese estilo que logra un grupo de alto calibre

This time around we are going to talk about one of the most controversial records of 2007: the last independent production of British band Radiohead, entitled “In Rainbows”. The controversy is based principally on the fact that this was the first record which could be completely downloaded from the Internet before it was physically released, and the most radical thing of all was that the price could be chosen by you, as to what you wanted to pay for the download, you could even obtain it totally for free: really something unique when we consider how the music industry is structured.This leads us to wonder which direction the commercialisation of music will take, and even in the new formats, will album cover art and design be reduced or disappear completely?I read an interesting reflection on this by a British journalist whose name sadly escapes me. He claimed that the release of “In Rainbows” as a free download represented a step forward in technology.

However, he also claimed that for new bands or solo artists, it was a blow to the ribs, because Radiohead are already millionaires, have an established name and a legion of fans. Meanwhile, for new music, this could be a double-edged sword because it would limit the acts and they would not be able to earn enough money to cover costs, or perhaps they would and we would see the large corporate monsters drastically destroyed. Record companies therefore take their precautions and limit investment in new music.It is a complicated topic and difficult to predict, but it was drastic, it took us by surprise and left us reflecting, of that there is no doubt. That whole smokescreen meant that musically, the record has hardly been discussed. And it is definitely an excellent record – in my opinion the band’s best since O.K. Computer.What is interesting about this record? For me there are two basic elements. The first has to do with the continuation of the musical offering on the band’s previous two records, without

Suenan a todo y a nada. La segunda cosa importante es lo musical. Tienen un sentido de la armonía y producción impresionantes, se siente la claridad que quieren lograr en cada canción. Así como en la parte de cada instrumento o sonidos generados por computadora, mismos que dan una sensación de uniformidad y cohesión. Notamos momentos que parten de lo mas simple y se van transformando en armonías mas truculentas, que bien pueden tener sus raíces en el jazz-fusión, el ambient, el electrónico, el avant gard, el tecno, sin faltar los tintes rockeros o pops. Resalta el entendimiento entre músicos y la capacidad de arreglar las canciones con un toque característico, todos aportando lo mejor

de su instrumento y llevándolo a los límites. Incluso Tom Yorke con su voz característica, que considero es, en el sonido Radiohead, otro instrumento más; muy a la manera de un Jeff Buckley, Freddy Mercury o Matthew Bellamy. Además integrada y dramatizada a las ya características letras de corte reflexivo, introspectivo y meditabundo, le dan el toque final al concepto.Así pues Radiohead en cada paso de su carrera, se ha convertido en un grupo de culto, sólido, del tipo de banda que va marcando tendencias, dejando atrás las pretensiones de estrellas. En vivo impresionan, y lo más importante para mí: en cada nuevo disco nos deleitan los sentidos. Salió una edición especial doble con 8 canciones extras, si la encuentras cómprala de inmediato.

Put better, there is a clear evolution and experimentation, without losing the sound which has become a genre in itself; that style achieved by a band of high calibre which is difficult to find today. To prove it, how many bands around today with their own voice and style can we identify if we close our eyes and think? They all sound the same. The second important thing is the music itself. They have an impressive sense of harmony and production, the clarity they achieve in every song can be felt. Even the instrumental parts and computer-generated sounds give a feeling of uniformity and cohesion. We can note simple moments which transform into more complex harmonies, which may well have their roots in jazz-fusion, ambient, electronic, avant-garde and techno, without forgetting the rock and pop influences. The understanding between musicians and the ability to arrange

the songs with a distinctive touch, with everyone getting the best out of their instrument and taking it to the limit, is also evident. Even Tom Yorke, with his distinctive voice, is for me, in Radiohead’s sound, like another instrument; much in the same way as a Jeff Buckley, Freddy Mercury or Matthew Bellamy. Also, the integration and dramatisation added by the band’s distinctive lyrics, introspective and thoughtful, gives the concept a final touch.Radiohead has therefore become, in every step of their career, a cult and solid band which marks tendencies, leaving the pretensions of stars behind. They are impressive live, and the most important thing is: with each new record they continue to delight us. A new special edition record with 8 extra songs came out recently. En Barcelona tal vez se reciclen ideas, se reutilicen conceptos, los mismos elementos o instrumentos idénticos. En esta ciudad quizá se puedan o no, repetir imágenes; se pueda o no volver a usar el ingenio, el intelecto de alguien más. Y si es cierto que siempre alguien recicla, lo recrea con tanta perfección que al final nadie está seguro de quién lo inició, de qué fue lo que lo detonó.

Lo mismo pasa con los muebles todas las noches y en diferentes barrios, esperan a que alguien los retome. Los trastos son entonces, la única manera tangible para ver que cada día de la semana, Barcelona está siempre al acecho.

In Barcelona, maybe ideas are recycled; concepts, elements and identical instruments reused. In this city, perhaps it is possible to repeat images and even reproduce the ingenuity or intellect of somebody else. And it is true that there is always someone who reproduces or recreates with such perfection that in the end nobody is sure of what or who came first.

The same can be said of the furniture that every night, in every district, waits to be picked up by someone. This unwanted junk provides us with the only tangible way to see every day of the week a Barcelona always on the lookout.

KUSTURICA / GREENAWAY = NUEVAS EXPERIENCIAS /

NEW EXPERIENCES


Después de haber participado en Cannes 2007, finalmente llega a las pantallas españolas lo último de Emir Kusturica y Peter Greenaway. Ambos, directores bien conocidos por sus estilos únicos y definidos. Por su parte, Kusturica nos ofrece Zavet (Prométeme). Acogida desigualmente en Cannes, la cinta nos cuenta la historia de Tsane, un pequeño de doce años que vive en una aldea de 3 personas: él, su abuelo y la profesora Bossa. Al enfermar gravemente el abuelo le hace prometer 3 cosas: vender la vaca, comprar un ícono religioso y encontrar esposa. Con estas intenciones viaja a la gran ciudad. Lo demás es una serie de eventos estilo Kusturica, barrocos y llenos de humor, aunque en ocasiones demasiado parecida a otras cintas del director bosnio.

Greenaway, por otro lado, hace gala de su extravagancia visual para relatar la vida, tragedia y obra de Rembrandt van Rijn en Nightwatching (La Ronda de Noche). En 1642 la vida del famoso pintor holandés cambia para siempre. Conspiraciones, asesinatos, muerte y una obra maestra constituyen el hilo conductor que llevaría a este maestro de la pintura a su ruina. Ganadora de varios premios en los festivales fílmicos de Venecia y Holanda; especialmente original en su estilo teatral y atrevido.

Dos cineastas controversiales, pero con miradas rompedoras, únicas y diferentes. Sus cintas han marcado tendencia y presenciar alguna de ellas es siempre toda una experiencia. Para muestra he aquí algunos títulos:

Having taken part in Cannes 2007, the latest works by Emir Kusturica and Peter Greenaway finally arrive to our screens. Both are directors well-known for their unique and well-defined styles. For his part, Kusturica brings us Zavet (Promise Me This). The film, which received mixed reviews at Cannes, tells the story of Tsane, a 12 year-old child who lives in a small village inhabited by three people: him, his grandfather and the teacher Bossa. When his grandfather is taken seriously ill, he makes Tsane promise him three things: to sell the cow, buy a religious icon and find a wife. With those plans in mind, he travels to the city. The rest is a series of events typical of Kusturica; baroque and full of humour, although a little too similar to some of the Bosnian director’s previous films.

Greenaway, on the other hand, makes use of his visual extravagance to tell the life story, tragedy and work of Rembrandt in Nightwatching (La Ronda de Noche). In 1642, the life of the famous Dutch painter changed forever. Conspiracies, assassinations, death and a masterpiece constitute the thread of events which drive this master painter to ruin. Winner of several awards in film festivals in Venice and Holland, this film is especially original for its bold, theatrical style.

Two controversial film-makers, but with ground-breaking, unique and different views. Their films have marked a trend and watching one of them is always an experience. Here are a few of their other works:

La eterna buena vida

Dicen que todos los caminos llegan a Roma. ¿Y por qué no? Sus atracciones son obvias; calles medievales, inmaculadas iglesias, edificios antiguos y museos reconocidos. Pero éste representa sólo un lado de la capital italiana. Porque Roma es mucho más que el Coliseo, que el Panteón, el Vaticano o las Catacumbas.

Roma es amor. Amor a la buena vida, a lo vivo, a lo antiguo y a lo nuevo. Una pizza en la piazza, un café en la calle, un panino en el parque, un vino en la terraza.

Esta es una ciudad caótica, construida para el aire libre, con una historia vieja e imperialista.

Pero la historia continúa. Roma se reinventa en cada esquina, en cada plaza y con cada paso. Fuera de los centros turísticos, la Roma actual se vuelve cada vez más chic, con restaurantes de película, bares de moda y discotecas de ensueño.

Aunque no cuenta con la misma cultura de vida nocturna de Londres o Barcelona, la capital italiana no quiere quedarse atrás.

Los mejores djs de Europa empiezan a hacer una parada obligada en la eterna ciudad, la población gay crece y los festivales ya son una parte fundamental del verano romano. Nace la Roma moderna.

They say that all roads lead to Rome. And why not? The city’s attractions are evident; medieval streets, immaculate churches, ancient buildings and renowned museums. But all of that is just one side of the Italian capital. Because Rome is much more than the Coliseum, the Pantheon, the Vatican or the Catacombs.

Roma is love. Love of the good life, of what is alive, what is old and what is new. A pizza in the piazza, a coffee on the corner, a panino in the park, a glass of wine on the terrace. This a chaotic city, made for outdoor life, with an old and Imperialist history.

But the story continues. Roma reinvents itself on very corner, in every square and with every step.Away from the tourist centres, present day Rome is becoming rather chic, with stunning restaurants, trendy bars and dreamy discotheques.

Even though the city may not possess the same nightlife culture as, say, London or Barcelona, the Italian capital is catching up fast.

The best djs have started to come, the gay population is growing rapidly and the festivals are now an integral part of the Roman summer. Modern Rome is born.

El barrio

Son tantos los distritos interesantes de Roma. Sin embargo, y sin duda, el barrio más mágico, el más romántico, y el más cutting edge, es Trastevere. Rústicas tabernas, pintorescos restaurantes y preciosas terrazas adornan las medievales calles de la zona. Magia pura.

Afuera

Más allá de las numerosas piazzas del centro histórico, vale la pena pasar una tarde al lado del río o en Villa Borghese, el inmenso parque en medio de la ciudad. A media hora de Roma se encuentra la playa de Ostia que, para escaparse del calor infernal de la ciudad un rato, ¡es la hostia!

The area

There are so many interesting areas in Rome. However, the most magical, romantic and cutting edge district simple has to be Trastevere. Rustic taverns, elegant restaurants and charming patios adorn the medieval streets in the area. Pure magic. Outdoors

The numerous pretty piazzas in the historic centre are a good start, but an afternoon by the river or in Villa Borghese –a huge park in the heart of the city– are also highly recommended. Half an hour from Rome, there is a chance to cool off at the beach in Ostia, a welcome escape from the stifling city sun.

Jonothan’s Angels (Piazza Navona) es un bar legendario con un ambiente amable e internacional. Mientras tanto, para comer o cenar, es difícil elegir mal.

En mayo

La segunda edición del festival del teatro independiente se estrena el 23 de este mes y termina el 1 de junio, reúne a los mejores actores, artistas y bailarines de todo el país. También se organiza un festival para gays y lesbianas en mayo. Para fechas e información, vayan al bar Hangar (Via in Selci, 69) o a Panico (Via di Panico, 13).

The places

The second edition of the independent theatre festival takes place between May 23 and June 1, bringing together the best actors, artists and dancers from across Italy. Todos los barrios tienen su propio estilo; el Raval ha creado uno por sí mismo. Y aunque existen ideas preconcebidas acerca de su vibra, algunas son ciertas y otras quizá no tanto. La típica noche de paseo por el Raval tiene que ver con pluriculturalidad, sensaciones oscuras, vida y movimiento; la magia radica también en que es un barrio perfectible y eso, siempre le da emoción a la noche. Las opciones de divertimiento que el Raval plantea son muchas, porque se podría decir que es todo un mundo. La Concha (Carrer de Guàrdia 14) es un lugar oscuro y desalineado que te intriga después de entrar por primera vez. Y te llama la atención porque conjunta ideas extrañas: un bar gay-bisexual-straight, en las paredes sólo fotos y cuadros de Sara Montiel, en la carta de bebidas muchos tés para escoger y la opción de fumar tabaco de sabores en shishas estilizadas. La música varía y debo admitir que no es su fuerte; puedes escuchar desde hits de la radio (¿¿??), pasando por música marroquí, hasta un lounge rico para acompañar el tabaco de vainilla, si decides fumarlo. Buena opción para empezar la tarde.Rambla 32 (Rambla del Raval 32). El lugar es de los que su estilo de decoración es todo menos ortodoxo. Media luz, suficiente sitio para sentarse y ambiente desenrollado. En las noches entre semana hay un “pincha discos” que a veces se confunde y no sabe si poner mínimal o electro clavado, pero ambos los pone mal. Los fines de semana el repertorio (y el DJ) cambia; ofreciendo algo un poco mejor para los oídos (bueno, si queremos escuchar pinchar como los grandes hay que fijarse en la cartelera e ir a un club). Lo mejor de Rambla 32 es la vibra y la ubicación en el corazón del Raval.Indian Lounge (Carrer Sant Ramón 23). Lugar versátil, en una calle más versátil aún. Un interesante ambiente chill out y música lounge de París, Nueva York o Mumbai (Bombay), donde lo pluricultural es lo que cuenta. Evoca parajes lejanos de la India con sus aromas de velas perfumadas, luces tenues y tonos naranja; para completar la experiencia sensorial puedes fumar shishas, disfrutar de los clásicos chais (tés) o los lassis de yogurt. Organizan fiestas de Bollywood y actividades como las jornadas de intercambio de idiomas que se celebran todos los miércoles. Hay que conocerlo.Rambla del Raval. En las noches de primavera y verano tiene personalidad propia, vida por sí misma; ahí puedes encontrar en un perímetro pequeño casi todos los personajes que habitan, no sólo en el barrio, sino en la ciudad entera. Es el pretexto perfecto mientras buscas sitio en dónde entrar, porque además siempre hay historias cortas que amenizan a la vista y a los oídos. Y bueno, si el hambre ataca durante la caminata existe la opción de comer un kebab. Para mi gusto la mejor elección, entre todas las que hay, es un buen sitio llamado Raval en Rambla del Raval 28; me atrevo a recomendarlo, porque además del muy buen sabor, todas las veces que los he comido nunca he tenido estragos a posteriori. Hay que seguir recorriendo los mundos que te dejan sin dormir en Barcelona, y hay que hacerlo recordando que nosotros mismos somos el principal objeto de la diversión.

Sleepless in El Raval

While every district has its own style, El Raval has created one of its own. And even though there are preconceived ideas about its vibe, some of these are true and others probably not. A typical night out in El Raval has a multi-cultural feel, dark sensations, life and movement; the magic lies in that it is also an imperfect area and that also adds emotion to the night out. The enjoyable options available in El Raval are many; you could say it’s like a whole world.La Concha (Carrer de Guàrdia 14) is a dark and unusual place which intrigues you from the moment you walk in for the first time. And it grabs your attention because it brings together strange ideas: a gay-straight-bisexual bar, on the walls only photos and pictures of Sara Montiel, and on the menu a wide selection of teas to choose from and the option of smoking flavoured shisha tobacco. The music varies and is not the place’s strong point; you can listen to hits on the radio (???), Moroccan music or a relaxing lounge style which proves an ideal accompaniment to the vanilla tobacco, if you decide to smoke it. A good option to start the afternoon. Rambla 32 (Rambla del Raval 32). The decoration style in this place is anything but orthodox. Half-lit, with enough room to sit down, this is the perfect atmosphere in which to unwind. During the week, there is a DJ session which is neither minimal or electronic, but lost somewhere between the two. At the weekend, the repertoire (and the DJ) change; offering something a little lighter on the ears (although, if you want to hear a great DJ, it is obviously better to check the listings and go to a club). The best thing about Rambla 32 is the vibe and its location in the heart of El Raval.Indian Lounge (Carrer Sant Ramón 23). A versatile place on an even more versatile street, this bar offers an interesting chill out atmosphere, with lounge music from Paris, New York and Mumbai (Bombay). But more importantly, this is a place where many different cultures converge. Here, faraway spots in distant India are evoked with perfumed candle aromas, dim lights and orange tones; to complete the sensual experience you can smoke shisha, enjoy the classic (chais) teas or even the lassis yoghurts. The bar organises Bollywood parties and activities such as the language exchange days which take place every Wednesday. A must.Rambla del Raval. A night-time stroll down this Rambla is highly recommended. On spring and summer nights, it has a real personality, a life of its own; there you can find in a small area all of the people who live, not just in the district, but in the city itself. This place is perfect while you look for somewhere to go, because you are surrounded by short stories which have your ears ringing as you stroll around.And if hunger strikes during your walk, the kebab option is a good one. For me, the best choice, of all of those available, is a good little place called Raval in the Rambla del Raval, 28; I am happy to recommend it, because as well as the great flavour, I have never any suffered ill-effects after having eaten there.And so, we must continue to travel the worlds which leave us sleepless in Barcelona, always remembering that we are the main object of the enjoyment around us.
