La ciudad de Toledo juega una importanciafundamental en el desarrollo de la vida y obrade Santa Teresa de Jesús. Allí recibió influen-cias tan fundamentales como la del padreBáñez, su director espiritual, y la de fray Gar-cía de Toledo, ambos dominicos. La inspira-ción que recibió allí dejaría después su huellaen Pastrana -Guadalajara-, Malagón -CiudadReal-, Villanueva de la Jara -Cuenca- y en loslugares por los que pasó camino de sus fun-daciones y visitas, como la Torre de JuanAbad -Ciudad Real-.

The city of Toledo plays a fundamental role in thedevelopment of the life and work of Teresa of Áliva.There, she received fundamental influences from Fa-ther Báñez, her spiritual director, and Fray Garcia ofToledo, both Dominicans. The inspiration she recei-ved there would later leave its mark on Pastrana -Guadalajara-, Malagón -Cuidad Real-, Villanueva dela Jara -Cuenca- and on the places she passedthrough on her way to and from her foundations andvisits, like the Tower of Juan Abad -Cuidad Real-.

III FUNDACIÓN DEL CONVENTO DE MALAGÓN, CIUDAD REAL

La reforma de Teresa de Jesús proponía una vida dura,dedicada a la orar y mortificarse. Ella, al igual que susreligiosas, estaba obligada a dormir sobre un simplejergón de paja, calzar sandalias de cuero o madera,ayunar ocho meses al año y jamás comer carne.El primer lugar de Castilla-La Mancha en que se con-cretó esta reforma de carmelitas, y tercer convento fun-dado por la santa, fue el de San José, en Malagón, enabril 1568.San José no es un convento cualquiera, sino que fueconstruido desde cero, con la participación directa dela santa en su diseño. El resultado es tan austero y fun-cional como el espíritu de su reforma. En su interiorconserva imágenes de la santa, siendo especialmentevenerada la que aún preside su celda, y que sale enprocesión en fechas señaladas.

The Reformation of Teresa of Áliva proposed a hard life, dedi-cated to prayer and torment. Like her nuns, she was obligedto sleep on a simple straw mattress, to wear leather or woodsandals, to fast for eight months a year and never to eat meat.

The first place in Castilla-La Mancha in which this Reformationof Carmelites was specified, and third convent founded by thesaint, was that of San José, in Malagón, in April 1568.

San José is not just any convent, it was built from scratch, withthe saint's direct participation in its design. The result is as aus-tere and functional as the spirit of her Reformation. Inside it con-serves images of the saint, and the one that still presides hercell is especially venerated and is taken out in procession oncertain dates.

III Foundation of the Convent of Malagón, Ciudad Real


The first time that Teresa of Ávila arrived in Toledo was on4th January, 1562, when she was 46, to visit Luisa de laCerda, staying at her house, which is the current Casa deMesa. The Carmelites had a first convent in the area inwhich San Juan de Dios Street becomes wider, later theywere in houses on Torno de las Carretas Street (currentlyNúñez de Arce Street, where Fray Juan de la Cruz arrivedon escaping from his prison in the convent of El Carmen).This was her fifth foundation. The saint was here from 23rdJune 1576 to July 1577 and she developed an intense ac-tivity as a writer. Later, the Discalced Carmelites went to thehouse of Alonso Franco, located in Las Tendillas, where theywould live for twenty-four years. Finally, on 28th May 1608they moved very close to the door of Cambrón, to the pa-lace that was built by Fernando de la Cerda and Ana de La-tiloye, where they are now. There, you will find the incorruptbody of the Blessed Mary of Jesus, call María López Rivas,known among the people of Toledo as the Santita.

Today this palace can be visited in Toledo, and it is knownas Casa de Mesa, it is a Gothic-Mudejar work of the fifteenthcentury, and it conserves an admirable Mudejar room.

V FUNDACIÓN Y LA CASA DE MESA

La primera vez que llega santa Teresa a Toledo esel 4 de enero de 1562, con 46 años, para visitar aLuisa de la Cerda, alojándose en su casa, que es elactual Casa de Mesa. Las carmelitas tuvieron unprimer convento en la zona en la que se ensanchala calle san Juan de Dios, después estuvieron enunas casas de la calle del Torno de las Carretas (laactual Núñez de Arce, donde llegó fray Juan de laCruz al escaparse de su presidio en el convento delCarmen). Esta era su quinta fundación. Aquí estuvola santa desde el 23 de junio de 1576 hasta julio de1577 y desplegó una intensa actividad como escri-tora. Después, las carmelitas descalzas se marcha-ron a la casa de Alonso Franco, ubicada en lasTendillas, donde vivirán veinticuatro años. Final-mente, el 28 de mayo de 1608 se trasladaron muycerca de la puerta del Cambrón, al palacio que fueconstruido por Fernando de la Cerda y Ana de La-tiloye, donde están ahora. Allí se encuentra, porcierto, el cuerpo incorrupto de la Beata María deJesús, llamada María López Rivas, conocida entrelos toledanos como la Santita.Hoy puede visitarse este palacio en Toledo, y es co-nocido como Casa de Mesa, es obra gótico-mudé-jar del siglo XV, y en él se conserva un admirablesalón mudéjar.

Tras residir en su nuevo convento de Malagón,Santa Teresa enfermaría, reponiéndose en Toledo yEscalona del Alberche. Una vez recuperada, su ím-petu la llevó a tomar posesión de un convento enPastrana.Hoy podemos visitar el convento del Carmen dePastrana, y disfrutar de su museo teresiano en unode los relevantes conjuntos históricos-artísticos deCastilla-La Mancha

After residing in her new convent of Malagón, Saint Teresawould fall ill, and she would recover in Toledo and Escalonadel Alberche. Once she recovered, her impetus led her takepossession of a convent in Pastrana.

Today we can visit the convent of Carmen de Pastrana, andenjoy its Teresa de Áliva museum in one of the prominenthistoric-artistic assemblies of Castilla-La Mancha

SU CONVENTO EN VILLANUEVA DELA JARA. CUENCA

Persecuciones, edad y enfermedades no restabanarrestos a Santa Teresa, que en 1580 fundó su con-vento número trece en esta localidad de Cuenca. Elinterior del edificio conserva hoy valiosas pinturasdel Siglo de Oro, y una espectacular techumbre mu-déjar.La localidad de Villanueva de la Jara es uno de losconjuntos históricos-artísticos relevantes de LaManchuela, con numerosas casas señoriales, queseducen con sus balcones, rejas y blasones.

Persecutions, age and illnesses did not diminish the cou-rage of Teresa de Áliva, who in 1580 founded her conventnumber thirteen in this town of Cuenca. The interior of thebuilding still conserves valuable paintings of the GoldenAge, and a spectacular Mudejar roof.

The town of Villanueva de la Jara is one of the prominenthistoric-artistic assemblies of La Manchuela, with numerousstately homes, which seduce you with their balconies, gra-tings and coats of arms.

La Peña Flamenca "El Quejío" conforma, desdehace más de 30 años, parte del tejido asociativoque dinamiza la programación cultural de la ciu-dad, organizando festivales, conciertos, tertulias,encuentros y conferencias.

El arte Flamenco, declarado por la Unesco Pa-trimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad,esta ligado íntimamente a esta ciudad.

Esta sinagoga, edificada en 1355-57 por samuel leví,perteneció a los hebreos hasta su expulsión por losreyes Católicos, convirtiéndose así en templo cristiano.sus muros están decorados por bellas grecas e inscrip-ciones hebreas, así como con diversos motivos vegetaleso mocárabes.

El museo alberga la historia judía de España y objetosde culto y tradición sefardita.

the synagogue el tránsito was built in 1355-57 by sa-muel leví, and it belonged to the hebrews until they wereexpelled by the catholic monarchs. it eventually becamea christian temple. its walls are decorated with beautifulfriezes and hebrew inscriptions, as well as different de-corative plant and mozarab motifs.

the museum exhibits the history of the Jews in spain witha collection of liturgical and traditional sephardic objects.

santa maría la blanca was built in the 13th century andbelonged to the Jews until half of the century xv, when itwas consecrated as a christian church and used as a re-fuge for the penitence of women who repented of their sins.the beautiful construction reflects its rich heritage. its in-terior boasts five naves which are separated by 29 horses-hoe arches over lime-painted brick pillars, with fancydecorations, larch coffered ceilings and plateresque altars.

Este hospital, de estilo plateresco, fue mandado construira principios del siglo XVi por el cardenal Pedro gonzálezde mendoza para reunir todos los hospitales de toledoen un mismo emplazamiento.

hoy en día alberga el museo del mismo nombre, dondese pueden apreciar diversos lienzos de El greco, entrelos cuales cabe resaltar “la asunción de la Virgen”, “in-maculada Concepción”, “la Veronica”, así como obrasde otros autores e interesantes objetos de arte y arqueo-lógicos.

quizá lo que le ha otorgado a esta iglesia una fama mundialbien merecida es que en su interior se encuentra el lienzo de“El Entierro del Señor de Orgaz”, de El Greco. Este cuadrorepresenta a san Esteban y san agustín apareciéndose trasla muerte de don gonzalo ruiz de toledo, señor de orgaz,para proceder a su enterramiento; la composición de esta obraestá dividida en dos partes, en sus pinceladas inferioresvemos representado lo terrenal mientras que la parte superiorrefleja lo celestial.

Este monumento, también llamadohospital de afuera, fue mandadoconstruir por el cardenal tavera en1541. atravesando su fachada rena-centista, encontramos en su interiordos anchos patios perfectamente si-métricos, con columnas dóricas yarcos jónicos. En el interior de suiglesia se encuentra el sepulcro delpropio fundador. En el museo sepueden admirar obras de artistascomo El greco, ribera, zurbarán,sánchez Coello, tiziano o tintoretto.aloja en sus dependencias el archivode la nobleza.

this monument is also called the“hospital de afuera”, which was builtby cardinal tavera in 1541. its façadedepicts a renaissance style and in-side we can see two perfectlysymmetrical patios with dorian co-lumns and ionian arches. the foun-der is buried inside the church.many different works from famouspainters are exhibited in the mu-seum, such as el greco, ribera, Zur-barán, sánchez coello, tiziano ortintoretto. the archives of la no-bleza are currently kept in the premi-ses of the building.

san Juan de los reyes is conside-red to be the most beautiful churchin toledo, and was built by the fa-mous architect Juan guas after thecatholic monarchs appointed him tofulfill this great task and perpetuatethe memory of the victory in the bat-tle of toro. the single and magnifi-cent nave has a latin cross planand an interior star-shaped dome.the main chapel hosts the five greatcoats of arms of the catholic mo-narchs, finished with the utmostcare and held by huge eagles. Esta puerta renacentista de origenárabe es conocida también comoPuerta de los Judíos ya que daba ac-ceso al barrio de la judería toledana.reformada en el siglo XVi se le aña-den a los dos torreones primitivosotros dos, resultando así una nuevaestructura de planta cuadrada y mo-delándose un pequeño patio en suinterior. alrededor de la puerta cre-cían unas zarzas llamadas cambro-neras, de ahí el nombre de“Cambrón”.

this renaissance door with an araborigin is also known as the puerta delos Judíos (Jews’ gate), since it wasused to get to the Jewish neighbor-hood of the city. it was built again inthe sixteenth century and two primi-tive towers were added to the exis-ting towers, creating a new squarestructure with a patio in the inside. itsoriginal name comes from the bus-hes that grew around the gate, called“cambroneras” (buckthorns), andthat is why the peculiar name “cam-brón” was used.
