Reality Television

Reality television is a genre of television programming which, it is claimed, presents unscripted dramatic or humorous situations,

documents actual events, and features ordinary

people rather than professional actors. It could be

described as a form of artificial or "heightened"

documentary. Although the genre has existed in

some form or another since the early years of television, the current explosion of popularity

dates from around 2000.

Reality television covers a wide range of

television programming formats, from game or

quiz shows which resemble the frantic, often demeaning programmes produced in Japan in

the 1980s and 1990s (a modern example is

Gaki no tsukai), to surveillance- or voyeurism-

focused productions such as Big Brother.

Critics say that the term "reality television" is somewhat of a misnomer and that such shows frequently portray a modified and highly

influenced form of reality, with participants put in exotic locations or

abnormal situations, sometimes coached to act in certain ways by off-

screen handlers, and with events on screen manipulated through

editing and other post-production techniques.

Part of reality television's appeal is due to its ability to place ordinary

people in extraordinary situations. For example, on

the ABC show, The Bachelor, an eligible male dates

a dozen women simultaneously, travelling on

extraordinary dates to scenic locales. Reality television also has the potential to turn its participants

into national celebrities, outwardly in talent and

performance programs such as Pop Idol, though

frequently Survivor and Big Brother participants also

reach some degree of celebrity.

Some commentators have said that the name "reality television" is an

inaccurate description for several styles of program included in the

genre. In competition-based programs such as Big Brother and

Survivor, and other special-living-environment shows like The Real

World, the producers design the format of the show and control the

day-to-day activities and the environment, creating a completely fabricated world in which the competition plays out. Producers

specifically select the participants, and use carefully designed

scenarios, challenges, events, and settings to encourage particular

behaviours and conflicts. Mark Burnett, creator of Survivor and other reality shows, has agreed with this assessment, and avoids the word

"reality" to describe his shows; he has said, "I tell good stories. It really

is not reality TV. It really is unscripted drama." (Adapted from https://en.wikipedia.org)

She knew the street backwards, of course. How many times had

she been dragged up it as a chi ld by the wr ist, whining and

snive l l ing, a lways wishing she were somewhere e lse? Now she had

no desire to be anywhere but here. This bustl ing traffic, these

fuming buses, these chipped pav ing stones and boarded -up shop

fronts, they were hers. Here, she would grow from defiant

teenager to independent woman. When she was an old woman, she

would gaze out over the lawns and say ‘Ah, Knox Road, that’s

where I real ly came into my own’.

Number 126 was only a short walk from the bus

stop, and she heaved her multiple bags onto her

shoulders and trudged off, try ing to maintain the

e lation as the straps dug into the flesh of her neck

and fingers. Number 126 was set back sl ightly from the main road,

with a concrete path and weed-patch at the front. The window

frames were rotten and the paint chipped. Hol ly tr ied not to mind.

I t was what was inside that counted, after a l l . The coming -together

of six indiv iduals from diverse backgrounds , discussing pol i t ics,

culture and art late into the night, shar ing ideas, recipes, mi lk ,

shower gel and lovers – that would be what she’d look back on of

course, not the paintwork. In the absence of e ither a bel l or

knocker, she rapped firmly on the door.

There was no reply. Hol ly peered through the gaps in the curta ins

of the downstairs window, but there was nothing but gloom within .

She could hear a fa int thudding of a bass beat, but was not sure

which house it be longed to. She rapped more firmly , and was

searching for a pebble to throw to the upstairs window when the

door opened. A shir t less, overweight twenty -something, with

bleary eyes and greasy hair stood in the doorway wear ing boxer

shorts and mismatched socks.

“I ’ve come for the upstairs room, I ’m the new tenant, ” said Hol ly

br ightly .

The man grunted sl ightly and moved aside. He gestured up the

dim, uncarpeted sta irway and began to shuffle a long the dark

hal lway to the rear of the house.

“Top floor , is that r ight? I guess I just fol low my nose!” Hol ly gave

a high laugh, and rece ived another grunt in reply. Then the man

was gone.

Not to worry, he must be the quiet moody type, thought Hol ly , too

caught up in his own profound thoughts for inane chit -chat. One

day she would penetrate his hard outer shel l and re lease the free

spir i t inside. Anyway, now for the sta irs.

The four fl ights of sta irs would be worth i t, she’d decided when she

picked out the flat, even i f i t did mean her going downstairs to get

to the bathroom, because the room faced the front, and she could

watch the wor ld scurry by as she sipped her morning coffee.

Kick ing one bag in front and dragging the others behind, she

final ly made it up the four fl ights and flung open the door to her

new room, her new haven, her new adult l i fe .

Peel ing beige wal lpaper, a lumpy mattress on a chipboard

bedframe, a bare l ight bulb, a flat -pack wardrobe inexpertly put

together. Al l this, Hol ly could just about put up with, but when she

saw the v iew from her window – a dul l patch of grey sky,

invar iable whatever the angle, she final ly had to admit to herse lf

that her adult l i fe was not getting off to a great start .
