Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan (Emperor's Teapills)

Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan (Tian Wang Bu Xin Pian, Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan, or

Emperor's Teapills, ) is a famous herbal formula in traditional Chinese

medicine for replenishing the blood and Yin to strengthen heart functions.

    This formula treats

minor complaints associatedwith sleep and stress. The

    Chinese medical

    understanding sees this

    condition as "kidney and heart

    not communicating." To treat

    this condition, one must

    nourish the blood and body

    fluids, cool the heart, and

    calm the mind.

    Medical function:

    (1). Expectorant effect

In studies with mice, a water decoction of 15g/kilo of body weight, taken internally, had an

expectorant effect. This could be because the ingredient saponin stimulates the mucus lining

of the stomach. This in turn triggers the bronchii to secrete more mucus. According to the

traditional Materia Medica, the part of yuan zhi that has been used is the skin of the root. But

now the whole root is used, including the middle part. But according to chemical ingredients,

the skin of the root and the middle part are different. With mice, using the skin alone, the

smallest effective amount is 1.25 grams/kilo. Using the middle wooden part of the root alone,

the amount of 50 grams/kilo has no effect at all. The wooden part of the root contains very

little saponin -- only 4 per cent of the amount contained in the skin. There is also a report that

1 gram /kilo of yuan zhi decoction infused into the stomachs of anesthetized dogs had no

    expectorant effect.

    Medical Function:

    1. adrenocortical hormonefunction As early as 1946 gan cao extract showedthe characteristics ofmineralcorticoid.Glycyrrhiza is metabolically convertedto glycyrrhetic acid (GA). GA, when incubated in-vitro with adrenal glandcells increases DHEA production.

    2. effects on digestive system: (a). anti ulcer (b). anti convulsion. (c). promotessecretion of insulin. (d). protects liver from toxin.

    3. anti inflammation 4. anti allergy 5. anti cancer: Saponins stimulate the immune system and inhibit Epstein-

Barr virus expression and possess in-vitro (in the test tube) anti-canceractivities. Epstein_Barr virus is associated in certain cancer development.Glycyrrhiza also containsquercetinthat has anticancer effects. Glycyrrhizalowers serum testosterone levels and correspondingly increases estrogenlevels by inducing two enzymes called 17--hydroxysteroid dehydrogenaseand aromatase thus inhibit prostate cancer cells.

    6. anti virus and bacteria: a. anti HIV, anti HBV b. anti amoeba and bacteria 7. effect on blood vessels: a. lower blood lipids. Both saponins and licoflavones

are known to bind to cholesterol and bile acids and have surfactantproperties.

glycyrrhizin is beneficial in chronic viral hepatitis glycyrrhizin was effective in inhibiting Pseudomona Aeruginosa where
