SALE OF VEHICLES

The AIVA believes that the sector is reactivating despite Enrollment fell 9.1% in June and 39.7% in the first half of the year

@PeriodicAND

The latest vehicle registrati-on data for June show a de-crease compared to the sa-me month of the previous

year. In fact, during the first half of 2020, there had been a decrease of 39.7% compared to 2019. Despite this, the president of the Associati-on of Vehicle Importers of Andorra (AIVA), Carles Sansa pointed out that the sector is beginning to recover af-ter the Covid-19 and acknowledged that the downward trend has been observed in recent months.

As Sansa explained, the automo-tive sector «is emerging from a crisis

EL PERIÒDICESCALDES-ENGORDANY

that has been severe» but conside-red that «consumption seems to be reactivating a priori». And it is that, according to the president of the AI-VA, the casuistry on the resumption of sales under the confinement has been diverse, from those that culmi-nated in the reopening to those that were closed and the return of pay-ment and signal «because the situ-ation is. so required.» Nevertheless, according to Sansa, the general fo-cus was on the «resumption of ope-rations» once the sector re-operated.

In this sense, the AIVA has no re-cord of the closure of any business resulting from the Covid-19, but what it had caused was a «lack of trust» among employers. «The shut-

down caused, beyond the loss of sa-les for two months, an insecurity due to the shutdown of consumpti-on that has not only occurred in our market, but has been experienced in the country as a whole.» In any case, Sansa stated that «at the moment, the feelings are not bad.»

In this line, the president of the AIVA also highlighted that the sec-tor had managed to maintain jobs thanks to the application of STCT or RJL and thus avoid layoffs. However, he clarified that not all workers had already re-joined his company.

However, the data shared yester-day by Statistics showed that this ye-ar, in the first half of the year, enrol-ment in the Principality had fallen

by 39.7% compared to 2019. “We ca-me from a few months with a ten-dency to the low, and it is clear that we will not recover the levels that we have lived in previous years, but it would be good to improve the pers-pective for this year even if it is com-plicated », pointed out Sansa.

REGISTRATIONS FALL BY 9.1% / According to statistics, during the month of Ju-ne, a total of 358 vehicles were re-gistered in Andorra, 36 less than in 2019, resulting in a -9.1% chan-ge. The only group that showed an increase was motorcycles and mo-peds, which grew by three units, from 100 to 103.

Going into the detail of the other blocks, the type of vehicle that most noticed the fall was that of trucks and vans, which went from placing 40 units in circulation in 2019 to on-ly 21 this year, was sold 47.5% less. The next most affected category was that of others, which includes items such as boats, private trailers and

Most pre-confinement purchases remained at reopening

Motorcycles and mopeds are the only vehicle category that increased total sales last month

passenger vehicles, among others, which recorded a loss of 21.1% of sa-les, passing from 19 to 15. Finally, the group of cars fell by 16 units, cor-responding to -6.8%, with 219 vehi-cles sold this year compared to 235 last year in the same period.

However, June was the month with the most vehicles sold so far this year. In January and February, 276 and 324 vehicles were sold in the Principality respectively, alt-hough, compared to last year, the variation was lower than in June, specifically, by 6.1% in January and 6.9% in February.

The darkest months for the sec-tor were those most affected by the global pandemic and confinement, in March and April. The first, with the extraordinary situation only du-ring the second half of the month, already fell 47.5% vehicle sales, from 362 in 2019 to 190 this year. But the worst figure was the follo-wing month, April, when only a to-tal of 17 vehicles were sold, namely 16 cars and a motorcycle, resulting in a decrease of 95.7%. In April 2019, a total of 395 vehicles were sold.

It was from May, when the data grew timidly and began to glimpse the recovery aimed at Sansa, with the record of 181 units sold. Howe-ver, the comparison still showed a significant decrease, of 58.7% com-pared to May last year, where 438 ve-hicle sales had accumulated. H
