MI EXPERIENCIA PERSONAL DURANTE LA VISITA DEL PAPA

Filadelfia y el Papa

Al llegar por la mañana del vi-ernes a Filadelfia me siento superado, no solamente por un ligero “jet lag” y por la falta de sueño que he sufrido

toda la semana, por una serie de emociones debido a que veré a una de las personas sobre las que la gente más habla en este momento en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica: el Papa Francisco.

Aún siendo Filadelfia la quinta ciudad de mayor población en los Estados Unidos, para mi sorpresa la ciudad se encontraba desierta. La policía, el servicio secreto y la guardia nacional, parecían estar en cada es-quina. Algunos pequeños grupos podían ser vistos en algunas de las atracciones turísticas de Filadelfia, como es el caso del Salón de la Independencia y la Campana de la Libertad, pero las calles vacías y el silencio que parecía

haber envuelto la ciudad trajo a mi mente las imágenes de un desolado pueblo fantasma. Al llegar la noche pienso, ¿saldrán las personas a dar la bienvenida al Vicario de Cristo?

Al despertar me doy cuenta de que hoy veré al Papa. El itinerario del Papa Francisco para el día, consistió en un viaje en su vehículo con sus escoltas para después llegar a una misa privada en la Catedral de la Basílica de San Pe-dro y San Pablo, además de reuniones privadas con varias personas, para después participar en un desfile por Benjamín Franklin Parkway y concluir en un concierto repleto de estrellas frente al Instituto de Artes de Filadelfia. Había varios puestos de control y revisión alrededor de Benjamín Franklin Parkway, y para mi sor-presa incluso la TSA fue llamada para ayudar con la seguridad y las inspecciones.

Miles de personas se formaron en Ben-jamín Franklin Parkway. En verdad se podía

sentir la emoción pues el Papa llegaría pronto. Al caminar hacia la Basílica, tuve que abrirme paso entre una gran multitud. El pequeño Fiat negro del Papa Francisco estaba en camino, y yo alcanzaba a escuchar que los gritos de la multitud se volvían más y más fuertes mien-tras más me acercaba. Mi anticipación crecía y todos alrededor mío comenzaban a festejar.

Él ahora estaba justo frente a la Basílica y miles de brazos sujetando teléfonos ce-lulares eran levantados. Mi maravillosa y perfecta vista se había arruinado. Sentí un gran empujón por detrás de un gran grupo de personas y, para empeorar todo aún más, una mujer que se subió a los hombros de un hombre ahora en verdad bloqueaba mi vis-ta. Yo movía desesperadamente mi cabeza para tratar de poder verlo.

En eso una mujer a mi lado dijo: “O dios mío, lo acabo de ver. Él está ahí en la parte superior de la escalera”. Salté una y otra vez tratando de encontrar un punto entre la gran cantidad de brazos y teléfonos. Tan rápidam-ente como esos brazos se habían alzado hacia el cielo fue la rapidez con la que el Papa Fran-cisco se dio vuelta y entró a la Basílica.

Yo me sentía devastado. Todos a mí alred-edor estaban sonriendo y diciendo lo maravil-loso que había sido verle saludar en nuestra dirección. Mi primera oportunidad real para ver al Papa había terminado. Salí de entre la multitud diciendo que de una u otra manera yo vería al Papa esa noche.

Unas cuantas horas después había aún más personas que antes. Yo estaba decidido a ver por lo menos a parte del Papa Fran-cisco. El momento no fue ni siquiera un momento, sino más bien un instante. Logre verlo, primero el lado de su rostro y después la parte de atrás de su cabeza. Ese pequeño vistazo me hizo sentir escalofríos. Su sen-cillez y elegancia era algo que todos a mi alrededor querían ver, y eso es todo lo que pedían, poder tener un pequeño vistazo.

Él procedió hacia el escenario maravil-losamente iluminado frente al Instituto de Arte. Mark Wahlberg introdujo al gran número de artistas y oradores que particip-aron durante el concierto. El Papa Francis-

co entregó a cada uno un rosario bendecido especialmente por él mismo.

Música clásica, Aretha Franklin y un coro góspel maravillaron al público, pero la inter-pretación de Andrea Bocelli para la canción “Our Father” junto con la Orquesta de Filadel-fia fue algo excelente. Después el Papa Fran-cisco habló sobre la importancia de la familia, el amor que debemos brindar al mundo e in-clusive hizo reír al público al preguntar a qué hora sería la misa del día siguiente. Él terminó pidiendo al público que “por favor recen por mí”. Su conexión con el público mostró que él también es humano.

Al despertar, yo estaba determinado en ver por segunda vez al Papa Francisco. Su au-tomóvil pasó por Ben Franklin Parkway pero esta vez lo hizo más lentamente. Los guardias de seguridad que caminaban a su lado le acer-caron a varios bebés para que pudiera besarlos en la frente. Las personas gritaban y subían a los árboles para poder verle.

A través de los árboles su vehículo blanco parecía magnificar su vestimenta blanca y pude verle de nuevo. Toda su silueta parecía ser la única que radiaba entre las grandes mul-titudes. Un gran silencio cayó sobre el público al comenzar la última misa. Las personas re-spondieron simultáneamente a las plegarias.

El Papa Francisco dijo: “Estos pequeños gestos son los que aprendemos en el hogar con nuestras familias. Se pierden entre todas las demás cosas que hacemos. Hay cosas realiza-das por las madres y las abuelas, por los padres y los abuelos y por los niños. Son pequeñas señales de ternura y compasión”.

Su saludo sencillo y su sonrisa que pude ver dos veces no solamente permanecen en mi mente, sino que siento que aunque él no me miró directamente, él me ha tocado, no solamente como católico, sino como ser humano para quien no importa la religión, etnicidad o crianza, alguien que puede apreciar su propósito para lograr tener un impacto duradero y positivo. Yo me sentí realizado por ser parte de algo más grande, de poder ser testigo y apreciar una persona con una gentileza y humildad que está cam-biando nuestro mundo.

Arriving in Philadelphia early Friday morning, I am over-come not only by the minor jet lag and sleep deprivation that has plagued me all week

by a mix of emotions that I will witness, probably the most talked about person in the United States right now, Pope Francis.

Philadelphia being the 5th most populous city in the U.S., was to my surprise, deserted. Police, Secret Service and National Guards-men seem to line every corner of the city. Random pockets of small crowds are seen at some of Philadelphia’s tourist attractions such as Independence Hall and The Liberty Bell, but the empty streets and silence that seems to have fallen over the city bring to my mind images of a desolate ghost town. Turning in for the night, I think, will people show up to welcome the Vicar of Christ?

Waking up I realize I am going to see the Pope today. Pope Francis’s itinerary for the day consisted of a motorcade escort to a private mass at The Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul, private meetings with various people, a parade down Benjamin Franklin Parkway and finally a star studded concert in front of The Philadelphia Arts Institute. Various checkpoints were set up around Benjamin Franklin Parkway and to my surprise the TSA was even called in to help with security and inspections.

Thousands of people were lined up along Benjamin Franklin Parkway, You could lit-erally feel the buzz in the air that the Pope would soon arrive. Walking towards the Ba-silica I found an opening through a crowd of people. Pope Francis’s little black Fiat was enroute and you could hear the cheers from the crowd of people grow louder and louder as he got closer. My anticipation grew and ev-eryone around me started to cheer.

He was now right in front of the basilica and thousands of arms with phones swung in the air. My wonderful and perfect view was ruined. I felt a great push from be-hind from a swarm of people and to make matters worse, a woman on top of a man’s shoulders was now really blocking my view. I moved my head around desperately trying to get at least one glimpse of him.

A lady right next to me said, “Oh my gosh, I just saw him, he is right there at the top of the steps.” I jumped up and down trying to find a void through the masses of arms and phones. As fast as all those arms had risen up, so was the mo-ment that Pope Francis turned and headed into the basilica.

I was crushed. Everyone around me was smiling saying how awesome it was to see him wave in our direction. My first real opportunity to see the pope had come and gone. I left the crowd vowing to see the Pope that evening, one way or another, it was going to happen.

A couple hours later there were even more people than before. I was even more adamant that I was going to see at least some part of Pope Francis. The moment was not even a moment but a flash. I saw him, first the side of his face and then the back of his head. That small glimpse gave me the “chills.” His sim-plicity and elegance was sought after by the masses around me and that’s all that people were fighting for, just that one glimpse.

He proceeded to the wonderfully lit stage right in front of The Arts Institute. Mark Wahlberg introduced the many performers and speakers throughout the concert. Pope Francis gave each a rosary blessed especially by him.

Classical music, Aretha Franklin and a gospel choir pulled at the crowds heartstrings but the rendi-tion of the “Our Father” by Andrea Bocelli accompa-nied by the Philadelphia Orchestra was time-less. Pope Francis then spoke about the importance of family, the love that we should bring about in the world and even made the crowd laugh ask-ing what time the final mass would be the next day.

He concluded by asking the crowd, “please pray for me.” His connection to the crowd showing that he too is human.

Waking up, I was determined to get a second glimpse of Pope Francis. His motor-cade drove Ben Franklin Parkway but this time much slower. Security guards walk-ing alongside brought numerous babies up to him for him to kiss on their foreheads. People screamed and climbed trees to get their one look.

Through the trees his white vehicle seemed to magnify his white vest-ments and I saw him again. His whole silhouette seemed to be the only thing radiating through the throngs. A hushed silence came over the crowd as the final mass began. People responded in unison to the prayers.

Pope Francis said, “These little gestures are those we learn at home with our fami-

lies; they get lost amid all the other things we do. They are quiet things done by mothers and

grandmothers, by fathers and grandfathers, by chil-

dren. They are little signs of tenderness and compassion.”

His simple wave and smile that I had wit-nessed twice, not only still linger in my

mind, but I somewhat feel that even though he didn’t

directly look at me, he touched me. Not just as a Catholic,

but as a hu-

man being for whom no matter what the religion, ethnicity or background, who can appreciate his purpose of making a lasting and positive impact. I felt fulfilled being a part of something bigger, witnessing a sim-ple individual with gentleness and humble-ness who is changing our world.

estudiante es ausente veinte días lo pueden referir al abogado del condado”, dijo Melissa Mayo, la Directora de Programas y Evalu-ación de Caminos Para el Éxito en el Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM), hablando de Jovani, un estudiante de la preparatoria Omaha South quien fue referido al pro-grama de Mayo.

“El director, Rubén Cano, preguntó si podíamos empezar con él a mediados de año para evitar la intervención de los tribu-nales, porque no todo puede ser remediado por los tribunales”, dice Mayo. El programa Caminos Para el Éxito en LCM se compone de dos programas diferentes que ayuda a es-tudiantes como Jovani a mejorar. “Tenemos el Programa de Asistencia y Participación para los jóvenes que tienen un historial de absentismo crónico y luego tenemos el pro-grama Joven Noble, que es más reciente a la agencia y muy prometedor en términos de esfuerzos y alcance”, dice Mayo.

Mayo, que tiene más de 15 años de ex-periencia trabajando en los campos de tu-

toría y justicia juvenil en el Norte y Sur de Omaha, dice que su programa trabaja para identificar las barreras a las cuales se en-frentan los jóvenes en la comunidad. Mayo dice que mediante la identificación de estos problemas ella y su personal puede enton-ces utilizar un enfoque basado en la fuerza para ayudar a estos jóvenes con problemas. “Tenemos un equipo de tres que son el personal basado en las escuelas y luego un facilitador para el Programa Joven Noble, también acabamos de contratar a un se-gundo facilitador”, dice Mayo.

“El distrito escolar identifico que había barreras para alcanzar logros, una de el-las eran las tasas altas de ausentismo crónico en los estudiantes”, dice Mayo, añadiendo “estaban viendo la correlación entre esos abscesos y estudiantes que se gradúan a tiempo, estudiantes prepara-dos a su nivel de grado y por eso ahora hay un consorcio, nuestro programa está en tres escuelas para hacer frente a ese problema en particular”.

De acuerdo con Mayo los jóvenes in-scritos en el programa de asistencia se enfrentan a diferentes tipos de barreras. “Algunos de ellos tienen que ver con su ocupación en la escuela, algunos de ellos

sienten que no pertenecen o tienen un propósito”, dice Mayo, y agregó que “al-gunos tal vez están detrás de nivel de gra-do y están realmente frustrados porque no entienden el contenido de la clase”.

Además de estos problemas Mayo indi-ca que algunos estudiantes conviven con compañeros que les presionan a faltar a clases. Los administradores escolares re-fieren a estos jóvenes a LCM y sus facil-itadores trabajan con el estudiante y sus familias para ayudarles a ponerse en el camino correcto.

“Lo que estamos viendo es que los jóvenes están cambiando. Creo que todo el mundo quiere ver que nuestros jóvenes se gradúen y pasen a tener éxito. A veces solamente necesitan esa capa adicional de apoyo”, dice Mayo.

La segunda parte del programa Caminos Para el Éxito en el LCM es el Programa Jo-ven Noble, un programa que tiene más de dos años en la agencia. “El programa Joven Noble se enfoca en las experiencias que tienes los jóvenes y los ritos de pasaje de los jóvenes a convertirse en adultos”, dice Mayo, agregando “hablamos de estas cuestiones”.

“Una de las cosas que es tan especial acerca del programa es que nos fijamos

en la identidad y cómo la identidad los forma, forma sus acciones, forma a su familia, su visión de la vida”, dice Mayo. Ella agrega que el programa ofrece a los estudiantes una buena base para tomar buenas decisiones en la vida.

Algunos de los otros temas tratados en el programa son de drogas y el abuso del alcohol, las relaciones saludables y evitar los embarazos precoces entre otras cosas. Mayo señala que este programa ayuda a los estudiantes a navegar estos temas en lugar de que los jóvenes los traten solos. Actualmente, el programa sólo sirve va-rones jóvenes. Mayo dice que están con-struyendo la historia con el grupo de los varones y espera que puedan ampliar sus servicios a las mujeres jóvenes en un fu-turo próximo.

“Es realmente grandioso ser parte de una agencia que se está expandiendo a nivel de base para proporcionar este tipo de servicios de calidad, especialmente en el sur de Omaha”, dice Mayo. He had been truant, he had been missing days, and in Douglas County like in other counties if you hit the twenty day ab-

sence mark you can be referred to the county attorney,” said Melissa Mayo, the Program and Evaluation Director of the Pathways to Success Program at the Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM), when talking about Jovani, a Omaha South High School student that was referred to Mayo’s program.

“The principal, Ruben Cano, asked if we could start with him mid-year to avoid the court involvement because not everything can be remedied by the courts,” says Mayo. The Pathways to Success Program at LCM is comprised of two different program that helps students like Jovani turn things around. “We have the Attendance and Engagement Program for kids who have a history of chronic absenteeism and then we have the Joven Noble Program, which is newer to the agency and really up and coming in terms of efforts and outreach,” says Mayo.

Mayo, who has over 15 years of experience working in the mentoring and juvenile jus-tice fields in North and South Omaha, says that her program works to identify the bar-riers to achievement that local youth in the community face. Mayo says that by identify-ing these problems she and her staff can then use a strength based approach to help these troubled youth. “We have a team of three

that are school-based staff and then a facili-tator for the Joven Noble Program, we also just hired a second facilitator,” say Mayo.

“The school district really identified that there were barriers to achievement, one of them was high rates of chronic absentee-ism in students,” says Mayo, adding “they were seeing the correlation between those abscesses and students graduating on time, students making their grade level, and so there is now a partnership, our program is in those three schools to address that problem in particular.”

According to Mayo youth enrolled in the attendance program face different types of barriers. “Some of them have to do with be-ing engaged in school, some of them feel like they don’t belong or have a purpose,” says Mayo, adding “some maybe behind grade level and are really frustrated because they don’t understand the content of what is go-ing on in class.” In addition to these prob-lems Mayo indicates that some students hang out with peers that pressure them into skip-ping class. School administrators refer these kids to LCM and their facilitators work with the student and their families to help them get back on track. “What we are seeing is that kids are turning things around. I think ev-eryone wants to see our kids graduate and go on to be successful. Sometimes it is just hav-ing that added layer of support,” says Mayo.

The second part of the the Pathways to Success Program at LCM is the Joven Noble

Program, a program that has been at the agency for over two years. “The Joven Noble program here is about what are all the things that kids go through, kind of their rights of passage from kids to adults,” says Mayo, add-ing “we talk about those issues.”

“One of the things that is so unique about it is that we look at identity and how iden-tify shapes who you are, shapes your actions, shapes your family, your outlook on life,” says Mayo. She adds that the program gives students a good foundation for making good decisions in life.

Some of the other topics discussed in the program are drug and alcohol abuse, healthy relationships, and avoiding early pregnancy among other things. Mayo points out that this program helps students navigate these topics instead of having youth deal with these issues on their own. Currently, the program only serves young males. Mayo says that they are building history with the group of males and she hopes they can expand their services to young females in the near future.

Durante la celebración del Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana, el senador estatal Brad Ashford (NE-2) tuvo el honor de reconocer a dos verdade-ros líderes hispanos, en el Distrito Electoral 2 de Nebraska, Linda García Pere y Magdalena García.

“Las dos, Linda García Pérez y Magdalena García han sido piezas clave para la preservación y avanzada de las artes y cultura latina y sus cos-tumbres”, dijo el senador Ashford. “Ellas han esta-blecido un ambiente robusto para las tradiciones y costumbres latinas”.

Linda García Pérez, quien ha trabajado 40 años creando, enseñando y exhibiendo la cultura México-latina, incorporando el arte tradicional mexicano con instrucciones básicas en arte para enseñar a niños y adultos de habla hispana e inglesa. Ella ha ampliado el conocimiento y entendimiento de la herencia latina dentro de la comunidad de Omaha.

Magdalena García, la fundadora y Directora Ejecutiva del Museo Latino de Omaha, ha sido instrumental al expandir la apreciación en la educación de los estudios latinos en el centro de la nación.

Los programas educacionales del museo infor-man a estudiantes de kindergarten hasta en el cole-gio, y también a adultos.

CONMEMORACIÓN DEL MES DE LA HERENCIA HISPANA DE NLAC

La Novena Conmemoración Estatal del Mes de la Herencia Hispana se llevará a cabo el viernes, 9 de octubre, en el edificio del capitolio en Lincoln, Nebraska.

La conmemoración, organizada por la Comisión Latino Americana de Nebraska, NLAC por sus siglas en inglés, y patrocinada por McDonald’s, Southeast Community College, US Bank y Wells Fargo, está abierta al público y honrará a latinos de todo el estado, mientras se celebra del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre como el Mes de la Herencia Hispana.

La invitada especial este año es Nina Gonzalez, hija del chicano activista Corky Gonzalez, fundador y es actual directora de la Escuela Tlatelolco en Denver, una escuela que se enfoca en estudiantes latinos e incluye estudios México-Americanos en su currículum. También es una activista en educación y derechos chicanos.

Este año, los cuatro premiados en el Mes de la Herencia Hispana son: en el premio Humanitario, Senador John McCollister del distrito 20, y el ex senador Jeremy Nordquist del distrito 7, por pre-sentar y apoyar la propuesta de ley LB 623. Para el premio de Inspiración, Luis Sotelo de Lexington, por ser líder escolar y comunitario. En el premio Organizacional, la escuela pública Madison, por las iniciativas para ayudar a estudiantes latinos. Y en el premio por Evento, la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Scottsbluff por su cena anual para unir a la comunidad y celebrar la cultura mexicana por 40 años.

GANADORES DEL CONCURSO DEL ENSAYO DE NLAC

La Comisión Latino Americana de Nebraska reconocerá a seis ganadores del concurso Ensayo del Mes de la Herencia Hispana y los ganadores de los primeros lugares leerán sus ensayos a la audien-cia. Los ganadores de High School son: primer lugar, Hillary Carrillo de Lexington High School. Segundo lugar, Pamela Cante de North Star High School de Lincoln. Tercer lugar, Martin Lagunas Nava de Bryan Senior High School de Omaha.

Los ganadores de Middle School son: Primer lugar, Noah Randolph de Brownell-Talbot Middle School de Omaha. Segundo lugar, Divith Rajagopal de Lux Middle School en Lincoln. Tercer lugar, Yair García de Schuyler Middle School.

El Centro de las Américas es el organizador del evento en El Mariachi Taco Cantina localizado en 601 R St. , en Lincoln, de 5 a 7 pm. Habrá comida gratis, bar en efectivo, Buena compañía y música. El evento es completamente gratis pero esta abierto a donaciones que se utilizarán para ayudar a los gastos médicos del residente de Lincoln Felix Valle.

Apesar de haber sufrido reci-entemente una lesión con-siderable tras un accidente automovilístico, Súper Triby subió animadamente al ring y

defendió su campeonato como la estrella de la lucha libre que es, que siempre ha sido.

Ante alrededor de unas 400 personas que se dieron cita el domingo 20 de septiembre en el Club 24 para presenciar el espectáculo, Súper Triby demostró ser el mejor entre los técni-cos quedándose con el cinturón que bien lo señala como el Campeón Interamericano de Lucha Libre de Nebraska dentro del circuito de luchadores de la asociación MMW (Midwest Mexican Wrestling), cuyo presidente es el em-presario Tony Vega.

Son ya 26 exitosos años de carrera de este simpático luchador mexicano, quien en su país, contrariamente a lo que se pudiera pensar, se inició con el bando de los rudos: “Podemos decir que yo comencé luchando en el lado de los malos y con el nombre de Siniestro y la ver-dad me sentía muy a gusto, ¡ahí había que darse hasta con las sillas!. Pero un día estando en la Triple A conocí a Súper Muñeco en el Pavillón Azteca, y él me dijo que yo tenía mucho poten-cial como técnico y que me cambiara con los buenos, así que así nació Tribilín”.

Sin embargo, el tomar el nombre de un per-sonaje bastante popular de una marca ya reg-istrada (a Tribilín lo conocemos como Goofy aquí en los Estados Unidos) le causó algunos contratiempos, así que decidió adaptarlo y cam-biarlo a Súper Triby.

“Luchando con Súper Ratón y Súper Pinocho nos presentábamos como el Trío Fantasía – co-mentó Súper Triby -, y en ocasiones hasta salía a luchar con el propio Súper Muñeco quien es-taba contento de que me había animado a dejar a los rudos. La afición nos recibía muy bien, sobre todo los niños, y eso hizo que me fuera encariñando mucho con el personaje”.

Y a propósito del público que asiste a los encuentros, como rudo, el enmascarado tuvo un encuentro bastante desagradable con una fanática: “Estábamos en Acapulco, Guerrero, en una lucha máscara contra máscara y a ella no le pareció que yo iba ganando, se exaltó de-masiado y tomó una botella con la que me hizo una herida en el brazo de más o menos 15 pun-tadas. En ésa ocasión pensé que ya no volvería a luchar, pero aquí sigo. Tengo unas 37 cicatrices visibles y algunas más sobre de ésas mismas”.

Súper Triby lleva 7 años viviendo en este país y sabe muy bien lo difícil que es salir adelante, así que durante la semana, deja a un lado su personaje y trabaja como cocinero en un famo-so restaurante de comida mexicana: “En México actualmente ya no se puede vivir de la lucha libre, pero aquí sí es posible, eso sí, siempre y cuando tengas tus documentos. Así que por la situación en la que me encuentro, yo tengo que hacer algo diferente”.

A sus 50 años Súper Triby se encuentra en muy buena condición física (conservando la delgadez que lo caracteriza) ya que entrena disciplinadamente durante sus días de descan-so: “Además también estoy formando a otros luchadores jóvenes que aún no se han presen-

tado en el ring, porque esto lleva un proceso largo, pero que van muy bien”.

Con presentaciones en ciudades como Mineápolis, Chicago, Kansas City y Des Moines, Súper Triby está feliz con sus logros: “Tengo muchas satisfacciones ya que me he acercado a mucha gente que antes como rudo, no veía, por ejemplo a los niños en los hospital-es o en sus fiestas de cumpleaños. Siempre me invitan a todas partes y yo nunca digo que no. Ya volví a registrar el nombre del Trío Fantasía y mis compañeros son Súper Dragón y Súper Ninja. Yo quisiera que regresáramos al tiempo en el que estábamos quienes comenzamos el movimiento de lucha libre en Omaha con per-sonas como Lety Rivera, a quien nunca le falté al respeto pero que de alguna manera se perdió por completo el contacto, lo cual es una pena y ojalá este medio sirva para hacerle un llamado”.

De momento, Súper Triby saborea su victo-ria derrotando a Bazuka por partida doble, no sólo defendiendo el cinturón sino también en la llamada Ruleta de las Máscaras y ya después, se enfocará en su siguiente tarea, la de colectar juguetes para los niños en las próximas festivi-dades.

“Quiero agradecerle a la Paletería y Nevería La Michoacana, Allied Chiropractic, a la Car-nicería El Pueblito, a Pastelería Nietos, a la Tienda de Abarrotes Nena’s, al taller Los Tres Dinámicos y por supuesto a Tony Vega y al abo-gado Tomás por todo su apoyo para que esto no se pierda”, concluyó Súper Triby.

During the celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Rep. Brad Ashford (NE-2) is hon-ored to recognize two true Hispanic leaders in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, Linda Garcia Perez and Magdalena Garcia.

“Both Linda Garcia Perez and Magdalena Garcia have been instrumental in the preservation and advancement of the Latino arts and culture,” said Rep. Ashford. “They have established a robust envi-ronment for Latino traditions and customs.”

Linda Garcia Perez, who has spent 40 years creating, teaching and exhibiting Mexican/ Latino culture, incorporates Mexican folk-art with basic art instruction to teach English and Spanish-speaking children and adults. She has broadened the Omaha community’s knowledge and understanding of the Hispanic heritage.

Magdalena Garcia, the founder and Executive Director of Omaha’s El Museo Latino, has been instrumental in expanding the educational apprecia-tion of Latino studies throughout the Midwest. The museum’s educational programs enlighten students from kindergarten through college, as well as adults.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH COMMEMORATION FROM NLAC

The 9th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month State Commemoration will take place on Friday, Oct. 9, at the Capitol Building in Lincoln, Neb.

The commemoration, hosted by the Nebraska Latino American Commission (NLAC) and spon-sored by McDonald’s, Southeast Community College, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo, is open to the public and will honor Latinos across the state while observing Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month in Nebraska.

Keynote Speaker this year is Nita Gonzales, daughter of Chicano activist Corky Gonzales, founder and current director of Escuela Tlatelolco in Denver, a school that focuses on Latino students and includes a Mexican-American Studies curriculum. She is also an education and Chicano rights activist.

This year the four Hispanic Heritage Month Award recipients are:

Humanitarian Award: Senator John McCollister (District 20) and former Senator Jeremy Nordquist (District 7) for introduction and support of LB 623.

Inspiration Award: Luis Sotelo of Lexington for school and community leadership.

Organization Award: Madison Public Schools for initiatives to help their Latino student population.

Event Award: Scottsbluff’s Lady of Guadalupe Church Annual Dinner for bringing the commu-nity together and celebrating Mexican culture for over 40 years.

THIS YEAR NLAC ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS

The Nebraska Latino American Commission will recognize six Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest Winners who will read their essay to an audience.

The High School winners are: First place: Hillary Carrillo of Lexington High School, Second place: Pamela Cante of Lincoln’s North Star High School, Third place: Martin Lagunas Nava of Omaha’s Bryan Senior High School.

The Middle School winners are: First place: Noah Randolph of Omaha’s Brownell-Talbot Middle School, Second place: Divith Rajagopal of Lincoln’s Lux Middle School, and Third place: Yair Garcia of Schuyler Middle School.

El Centro de las Americas is hosting a recep-tion at El Mariachi Taco Cantina at 601 R St. in Lincoln, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be free food, cash bar, great company and music. The event is completely free, though open donations are being taken to help Lincoln resident Felix Valle’s medical support bills.

Despite suffering a recent in-jury from a car accident, Su-per Triby climbed into the ring and defended his title as the wrestling star that he’s

always been. On September 20 and before approximately 400 people who came to see the match at Club 24, Super Triby showed he was the best and got to keep the belt that shows he’s the Inter-American Wrestling Champion of Nebraska in the MMW (Mid-west Mexican Wrestling), whose president is entrepreneur Tony Vega.

This charismatic Mexican wrestler has been fighting for over 26 years now, which is interesting because he got his start back in Mexico as a heel: “You could say I started my wrestling career as part of the bad guys. I fought under the name of Siniestro and, to be honest, I felt great about it. Back then we even had to hit each other with the chairs. But then one day while fighting in the AAA I met Super Muñeco at the Azteca Pavilion and he said that I had a lot of potential as a face wrestler and that I should switch sides and fight with the good guys, and that’s how Tribilin was born.”

However, taking the persona of a very pop-ular and branded character (Tribilin is the name used for Goofy in Mexico) was cause for a few setbacks, so he decided to adapt the character and changed it to Super Triby.

“When fighting alongside Super Raton and Super Pinocho we used to call ourselves the Trio Fantasia,” said Super Triby, “and I sometimes even fought with Super Muñeco who was very happy about me joining their ranks. The crowd had a great reaction to us, especially the kids, and that made me like my character even more.”

And speaking of the people who come to each match, as a heel the wrestler had a very uncomfortable incident with a fan: “We were in Acapulco, Guerrero in a mask vs. mask fight and she didn’t like that I was win-ning so she got too excited and used a bottle to injure me - I had to get around 15 stitches for my arm. Back then I thought I wouldn’t wrestle again, but here I am. I have 37 visible scars, and some of them have more scars on top of them.”

Super Triby has been living in this country for 7 years now and he knows how tough it is to make ends meet, which is why during the week he leaves his persona behind and works as a cook at famous Mexican food restaurant: “Right now back in Mexico you can’t make a living just from wrestling, but you can over here as long as you have all your documents in order.”

Now 50 years old, Super Triby is still in great shape (as slim as always) thanks to his rigorous training on his days off: “I’m also training younger wrestlers. They still haven’t

made their debut because this is a long pro-cess, but everything is going well.”

With matches in Minneapolis, Chicago, Kansas City and Des Moines, Super Triby is very happy with his achievements: “I’ve had many satisfactions because I’ve been able to get closer to people, something I didn’t get a chance to experience when I was a heel. For example, I’ve gotten a chance to visit kids at the hospital or birthday parties. I’m always invited everywhere, and I never say no. I re-registered the Trio Fantasia name, and my partners are Super Dragon and Super Ninja. I wish we could go back to a time when we were just getting started with the wrestling movement in Omaha with people such as Lety Rivera, who, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get in touch with again, so I hope that I can get in touch again thanks to this.”

For now Super Triby enjoys his victory over Bazuka, not only after defending his title but also in the so-called Mask Roulette, but he’ll soon set his focus on his next goal: collecting toys for kids for the holidays.

“I want to thank Paleteria y Neveria La Mi-choacana, Allied Chiropractic, Carniceria El Pueblito, Pasteleria Nietos, Nena’s Conve-nience Store, Los Tres Dinamicos workshop and of course Tony Vega and Lawyer Tomas for all their support to make wrestling a re-ality,” said Super Triby.

La Semana Binacional de Salud (SBS) es la mayor movilización comunitaria del continente que tiene como meta mejorar la salud y el bienestar de la población mi-grante de origen latinoamericano que vive en los Estados Unidos y Canadá. Durante la SBS diversas instituciones del gobierno federal, estatal, y local, organizaciones co-munitarias y miles de voluntarios se reúnen anualmente en el mes de octubre para re-alizar una serie de actividades de promo-ción y educación de la salud, incluyendo talleres educativos, canalización a servicios de salud y a programas de seguro médico, vacunaciones y exámenes básicos de detec-ción gratuitos, entre otros.

Los eventos son organizados por redes integradas por agencias y organizaciones comunitarias con el propósito de llegar a las personas más vulnerables y necesitadas, especialmente a las que carecen de seguro médico. Los principales temas de salud que se cubrirán este año son: VIH/SIDA, Dia-betes, Salud Ocupacional, In� uenza y Ac-ceso a Seguros de Salud.

Cabe destacar, que esta feria de salud ha sido posible gracias al apoyo de orga-nizaciones y agencias participantes de los Estados de Iowa y Nebraska.

Binational Health Week (BHW) is the larg-est mobilization e� orts in the Americas to im-prove the health and well-being of the under-served Latino population living in the United

States and Canada. During BHW, federal, state and local government agencies, com-munity-based organizations and thousands of volunteers come together in the month of October to conduct a series of health promo-tion and health education activities including workshops, insurance referrals, vaccinations and medical screenings.

� e events are coordinated by the collabo-ration among community and government agencies from the U.S., Mexico and other Latin American countries with the purpose of reaching out to the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people, especially those without medical coverage. � is year the main health topics that will be adressed are HIV/AIDs, Diabetes, Occupational Health, In� uenza, and Access to Health Insurance.

Under the leadership of the Consulate of Mexico in Omaha, OneWorld, UNMC, Metropolitan Community College, among others, in Omaha, events will be dedicated to family’s health, women’s health, young’s and senior’s health, from October 9th to 17th. Free services as � u shots, vaccines, cholesterol and glucose screenings, clinical breast exams, vision and hearing screen-ings, Sexual Transmission Diseases (STD) screenings, information about breast cancer and others will be provided. It is worthy to distinguish that this health fair will be pos-sible thanks to the support and e� orts of or-ganizations and participants agencies from Iowa and Nebraska States.
