“aunque me dejara quemar

vivo, si no tengo amor, de nada

me sirve” (1 Corintios 13:3).

Strength Against Opposition

In appointing Jeremiah

to stand up to the people

and announce the truth,

God at the same time

promised him the strength

to do the job. “They will

fight against you but not

prevail over you, for I am

with you” (Jeremiah 1:19).

Jesus also faced

opposition, right from the start. In his home town of

Nazareth the people couldn’t accept the idea that

someone from among their own could be God’s

messenger. “[F]illed with fury,” they expelled Jesus

from town and would have hurled him over the

edge of the hill. “But Jesus passed through the

midst of them and went away” (Luke 4:28, 30).

Although the true prophet has strength from God,

Saint Paul says there’s something even more

important than suffering death for the sake of God’s

word. “[I]f I hand my body over so that I may

boast, but have not love, I gain nothing”

(1 Corinthians 13:3).

News from the Padre/ Noticias de Nuestro Sacerdote

Super Bowl Sunday has become, over the years, a quasi national holiday. It seems to be on par with the Fourth of

July. An index of the impact of this celebration could be two things: the amount of media coverage leading up to the

start of the “Big Game” and the amount of food consumed on Super Bowl Sunday. Super Bowl Sunday is second only

to Thanksgiving. Reports are out that on game day this year, there will be a chicken wing shortage: it is estimated that

1.23 billion wings will be devoured this Sunday!

Every little detail at the Super Bowl is heightened, hyped, and promoted weeks before the game. It does seem,

however, that the halftime show and commercials are more important to some than the game itself. When it comes to

game time, the actual singing of the National Anthem puts the whole crowd and television viewers everywhere into a

frenzied state-of-religious mind, especially when the camera scrolls down the line showing football players honoring

country and God. Singing the anthem has a similar feeling to singing our favorite Christmas carols in Church.

Some people have begun to worry that sports in general, and football in particular, are taking over as the nation’s

principal religion. Their arguments point out some interesting similarities. Two examples where sports can be

compared to religion are: first, they both involve an elaborate set of rules and rituals, and second, both sports and

religion do bring the community together. Parties abound – rich or poor, young or old, male or female – people do

come together!

Sports have that power to bind people together. Witness how the Super Bowl grabs or binds a village, city, or state

when their team is in the Big Game. The word “religion” is derived from the Latin “religare” meaning “to bind.”

As a sports fan, I see major scripture principles at work in sports. “As a body is one, though it has many parts and all

the parts of the body, though many are one body…. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer; if one part is honored, all

the parts share its joy.” (Paul to the Corinthians 12:12-30.) Teams that play as one unit, in concerted teamwork – even

though they have many players – usually win.

I see religion and sports alike in another way. Much to the chagrin of being a long-suffering Viking fan, it has helped

me for crucial life experiences. Staying true to my team in good times and lean times makes me a loyal person. My

religious beliefs call me to be loyal to Christ in good times and bad times.

An obvious link between the two is the role of discipline in the life of an athlete and a person who follows Christ.

And, consider the similarities in our vocabulary associated with both: dedication, sacrifice, commitment, suffering,

and spirit.

The Super Bowl has always been played on a Sunday. Isn’t it odd that the Big Game is played on the Sabbath?

Another connection between religion and sports: Remember to keep Holy the Sabbath. That is the fourth

commandment.

Your team may win or lose the Super Bowl, but you never lose if

you follow your Faithful Servant, Christ.

News from the Padre/ Noticias de Nuestro Sacerdote
