was recently reminded of an article published in The Economist in2009 which mentioned that Iberia and its Iberia Plus Frequent Flyer

Credit Card Programme provided, when compared to the top ten Europeanand North American airlines, greater benefits for its clients. While, as anIberia Plus cardholder, the content of the article did not surprise me, it didremind me of the day in November, 1991 that I received my Iberia PlusCard Welcome Pack.

At that time, I had no business connections with commercial aviation,so my experience with these types of programmes was limited. I wasaware, however, that Iberia was responsible for launching the firstfrequent flyer credit card programme in Europe and that within twomonths of its launch, it had created great expectations amongst youngbusinessmen like myself who were eager to receive the announcedbenefits. At that time, having an Iberia Plus Card seemed to give one thestatus of an experienced traveller, making it even more attractive.

Today, nearly two decades later, the Iberia Plus Frequent Flyer CreditCard Programme has 4.5 million clients and over 90 associatedcompanies that include airlines, hotel chains, financial institutions, carhire companies, entertainment companies, leisure companies etc.Studies such as the one referred to in the above-mentioned articleconfirm the success of something of which most cardholders arealready aware. The data speaks for itself. In 2010 Iberia Plus Cardholdersobtained 24,942,225 points by flying with AIR NOSTRUM. During thesame period, a total 47,972,054 points were exchanged for 65,000 free

return flight tickets of the programme’s approximately 700,000 flights,a magnificent example of resourceful client servicing.

In my opinion, this is the key to the 9% annual growth rate of the IberiaPlus Frequent Flyer Credit Card Programme over the past few years, aprogramme that allows clients to programme their free flights. In fact,83% of frequent flyers with the Iberia Group, of which AIR NOSTRUMis a member, normally obtain the flight of their choice. This is thehighest percentage on the frequent flyer programme ranking list, nearly20 points above the nearest competitor. I would also mention that,as many of you are already aware, the Iberia Plus Card also offers awide range of other possibilities for clients preferring to spend theiraccumulated points on other types of services. A fantastic, easilyaccessible programme. That is the secret.

A few years ago, I heard a marketing “guru” say, “True loyalty doesnot begin until a client enjoys his first free flight”. The Iberia Groupand its members could not make it easier for you. Are you ready togive it a whirl?

ún recuerdo un artículo publicado por la revista “The Economist”en el año 2009 en el que se afirmaba que la Tarjeta Iberia Plus era

la que mejor premiaba a sus clientes en comparación con los programasde fidelización de las diez mayores compañías aéreas europeas y ame-ricanas. Aunque el contenido de dicha noticia no me extrañó, puesto queya había tenido la ocasión de comprobar personalmente el excelentefuncionamiento de este Programa de viajeros Frecuentes, su lectura mehizo recordar el día en que recibí el welcome pack de mi TarjetaIberia Plus allá por noviembre de 1991.

En aquella época yo no tenía ningún tipo de vinculación con elmundo de la aviación comercial y mi experiencia con este tipo depromociones era muy limitada –no olvidemos que el Programade viajeros Frecuentes Iberia Plus fue la primera tarjeta de fideliza-ción de una compañía aérea en Europa–, pero lo cierto es que contan sólo dos meses de vida la tarjeta había logrado despertar muchaexpectación entre los jóvenes que nos incorporábamos al mundoempresarial y que deseábamos conseguir cuanto antes aquellos bene-ficios que nos anunciaba Iberia en su publicidad. Además, su pose-sión parecía conferir un envidiable barniz de viajero experimentadoa sus titulares, lo que la hacía aún más atractiva ante nuestros ojos.

Hoy, dos décadas después, el programa Iberia Plus cuenta con4.5 millones de clientes y más de 90 empresas asociadas entre lasque se encuentran compañías aéreas, cadenas hoteleras, entidadesfinancieras, empresas de alquiler de coches, entretenimiento, ocioetc. y, estudios como el que antes he citado, sólo hacen que confirmarese éxito del que ya teníamos constancia sus usuarios. Los datos hablanpor sí mismos. En 2010 los titulares de este programa de fidelizaciónconsiguieron 24.942.225 puntos a bordo de los aviones de AIR NOSTRUMy redimieron 47.972.054 puntos en forma de 65.000 billetes de ida yvuelta en nuestra red, sobre un total de más de 700.000 vuelos que otorgóel programa. Toda una lección de buen hacer en servicio al cliente.

En mi opinión, esa y no otra es la clave de que el Programa Iberia Pluscrezca cerca de un 9% anual de forma constante durante los últimosaños: sus clientes son los que más fácilmente pueden elegir el vueloque desean para canjear sus puntos. En un 83% de los casos, los pasa-jeros frecuentes del Grupo Iberia, del que AIR NOSTRUM forma parte,consiguen plaza en el vuelo y fecha deseado. Se trata del porcentajemás alto del ranking, a casi 20 puntos de su competidor más cercanoy a ello se suma el amplio abanico de posibilidades que el programaIberia Plus ofrece a los clientes que no quieren gastar sus puntosúnicamente en volar. Una gran oferta y total accesibilidad. Ese es elsecreto.

Hace algunos años escuche la siguiente frase en boca de un “gurú”del marketing relacional: “la verdadera fidelización no comienzahasta el día en que el cliente disfruta de su primer vuelo gratis”.Los que formamos parte del Grupo Iberia se lo ponemos muy fácil.¿Se anima?

Seguramente sí, ya que mi padre siempre me ha dicho que la moto la tenía que pedir yo,que él nunca me forzaría. Toda mi familia siempre ha sido aficionada a las motos.¿Cómo fueron tus comienzos en el motocross?Empecé haciendo enduro y motocross, ya que en mi tierra la moto de campo siempre hasido más popular; y en concreto estas modalidades porque son más asequibles económi-camente que la velocidad.¿Cómo definirías tu pilotaje?Mi pilotaje aún está mejorando, ya que soy joven y me quedan muchas cosas por aprender,pero todo el mundo me dice que tengo un pilotaje y unas trazadas muy finas.Este año han ganado españoles en todas las categorías, ¿a que crees que sedebe esta hegemonía?Creo que es debida al buen trabajo que esta haciendo la Federación Española de Moto-ciclismo en la base, organizando copas de promoción y proporcionando con becas a niñosque empiezan, cosa que ayuda mucho a los padres económicamente.De los circuitos en los que has competido, ¿en cuál te encuentras más a gusto?En Jerez y Montmeló.¿Te convenciste de que ibas a ser campeón del mundo tras la extraordinariaremontada en Estoril?Siempre he tenido este sueño y cuando comencé la temporada ser campeón del mundo eraun objetivo que veía posible. En Estoril, más que ganar el campeonato lo salvamos, porquepor momentos estaba completamente perdido, y gracias al esfuerzo del equipo pudimosganar la carrera y así todo fue más fácil en Valencia.¿A quién le dedicarías este campeonato?A toda la gente que me ha ayudado desde pequeño, a mi familia y a Emilio Alzamora, mimanager.¿Qué cualidad ha sido más importante para conseguirlo?Uno de los factores más importantes es la mentalidad, siempre querer más y ser ambicioso.El trabajo y el sacrificio también importa mucho, darle prioridad al mundo de las motos. A ou asked your father for a motorcycle when you were just 4-years-old. Were youattracted to motorcycling from such a young age?

I must have been. I remember my father always saying that he would never force me toride and that if I wanted a motorbike, I would have to ask for it. All the members of myfamily are motorcycling fans.What were the early days like?Well, my first experience was in endurance motocross racing as this type of racing is verypopular where I come from. It is also more economical than other types of motorcycleracing.How would you define your technique?I am still improving my riding skills. I am young and still have a lot to learn. Most peopletell me I have a very refined technique.Spanish drivers have recently dominated all the motorcycle categories. What wouldyou say is the secret of this success? I think it is the work being carried out by the Spanish Motorcycling Federation. They havebeen organising a lot of promotional competitions and providing grants to beginners.These grants are helping people a lot economically.Which are your favourite racing tracks?Jerez and Montmelo.Was it after your extraordinary recovery in Estoril that you really began to believe thatyou could become world champion?I have always dreamt of becoming a world champion. I began to realise it was possible rightfrom the beginning of the racing season. In Estoril, we were trying to save the championshipmore than win it as sometimes it really did seem that everything was lost. Thanks to a greatteam effort we managed to save the race, making things a lot easier in Valencia.To whom would you like to dedicate your world title?I would say to all of the people who have ever helped me, to my family and to my manager,Emilio Alzamora.What qualities would you say were fundamental for winning the championship?I think one of the most important factors is to have the right mentality, the will to achievemore and, of course, ambition. Mérida celebra una Semana Santa de las más antiguas de España y con una personalidad propiamuy acusada, rasgo que le confiere el recorrido de los pasos procesionales por los lugares másemblemáticos de la ciudad como el Arco de Trajano, el Templo de Diana, el Anfiteatro o el PuenteRomano. Esta posibilidad de aprovechar los restos arqueológicos, declarados Patrimonio de laHumanidad por la Unesco en 1993, hacen de la Semana Santa de Mérida el marco idóneo paraatraer el interés de visitantes de toda Europa. La Junta de Cofradías ha incorporado en los últimosaños nuevos recorridos e imágenes, esfuerzos que sumados al yacimiento arqueológico urbanomás grande de España, componen un binomio de enorme interés religioso, cultural y turístico quese ha visto refrendado en la declaración como Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional en el año 2010.

A caballo entre la sobriedad castellana y el brillo andaluz, la Semana Santa emeritense toma supropio estilo al discurrir entre los restos romanos y el cariño de sus habitantes hacia las imágenesque representan La Pasión de Cristo. Es inevitable sobrecogerse al intuir el anhelo de los primeroscristianos sacrificados en el Coliseo Romano, cuando se participa en el grandioso Vía Crucis querecorre el Anfiteatro con la venerada imagen del Cristo de la O. Allí, a la Luz de las Antorchas,la Mérida pagana y la cristiana se funden en un sentido homenaje a los primeros mártires de la fe.

Merida celebrate one of the oldest Holy Week in Spain and with a very pronounced personality,a trait that gives the route of the processions through the most emblematic places of the city asthe Arch of Trajan, the Temple of Diana, the amphitheatre or the Puente Romano. The possibilityof using archaeological remains, declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1993, makes the easterof Mérida the ideal framework to attract the interest of visitors across Europe. The “Cofradías”Organization has built in recent years new tracks and pictures, and has made important efforts,and the biggest urban archaeological place in Spain, make up a pairing of great interest in religionand culture, and tourism has been reforced with the declaration as a National Interest TourismFestivity in 2010.

Situated between sobriety and brightness Spanish Andalusian, Merida Holy Week make the ownstyle to run between the Roman and the affection of its inhabitants to the images that representthe Passion of Christ. Inevitably shocked to intuit the pain of the early Christians slaughtered inthe Roman Coliseum, participating in the Way of the Cross that runs the amphitheater with thevenerated image of Christ of the O. There, with the light of torches, the pagan and ChristianMerida people offer a tribute to the early martyrs of the faith.

and commercial centre”, the largest city in Castilla-La Mancha, a bustling, modern,technologically advanced metropolis equipped with excellent services, and the restof the province of Albacete, home of unlimited natural resources, impressivelandscapes and picturesque towns and villages.

Dating back to the 14th century, the city of Albacete is famous for its annual“Town Fair”, a magnificent event taking place in September, guaranteed to surpriseits numerous visitors with its excellent programme of commercial fairs and the factthat it has, together with the recently built Congress Centre, turned businesstourism into one of Albacete’s most important all-year-round tourist attractions.

Urban tourism is another popular activity here. Albacete’s important varietyof historical buildings and monuments, many of which can be located along itsmain streets and avenues, form part of a number of specially designed itinerariesfor visitors who we would suggest follow the Red Line for monuments, Green Linefor sculptures and Orange Line for museums and art galleries. Albacete is alsohome of a number of beautiful town squares, parks and gardens such as the 100-year-old Abelardo Sanchez Park, an ideal resting place for weary tourists and agreat place for enjoying the famous hospitality of Albacete’s friendly locals.

Albacete is also well known for its magnificent cultural offer. This includes itsfamous Circus Theatre, an architectonic jewel built in 1887 and re-inaugurated in2002 following a full restoration. This outstanding building, conceived as a theatrefor both theatrical and circus events, is considered a national and Europeanreference point thanks to its modern installations which include, amongst otherthings, a circus ring. Prior to the beginning of the circus season, some of the bestcircus performers participate here in the International Albacete Circus Festival, oneof Spain’s most important circus festivals. Other annual events worth mentioninginclude the local Carnival and Holy Week festivities. In addition to the previouslymentioned Town Fair, Albacete also hosts the Albacete Film Festival (ABYCINE)in September, the International Jazz Festival in November, Christmas concerts inDecember, the Flamenco Festival in March, the Dance Festival in April and a largevariety of summer festivals that include, amongst others, the Lietor Organ concerts.

Meanwhile, the city’s Phoenician roots are responsible for its long history ofcommerce, both modern and traditional. Everything is possible in a city with sucha strong commercial character.

Visitors will also find here a wide variety of popular night entertainment aimedat all age groups. With safety as its motto, visitors are given the opportunity ofenjoying here all types of entertainment which is in itself a good enough reasonfor visiting this exciting city.

It also has a number of swimming pools and Sports centres along with acalendar of singular sporting events. Sporting activities include golf at the PinaillasGolf Club, trekking, adventure sports, motor racing at the Albacete Racing Circuitand hunting and fishing.

present, where contemporary architecture has replaced old warehouses on the Ilede Nantes, an island in the Loire. As well as the 12-metre giant elephant at theMachines de l’ile and the Manny building, with its bird’s-nest-like aluminium façade,there is the art trail. From the Station Prouvé visitor information centre, stroll pastsix installations, including Daniel Buren’s iconic Anneaux, 18 steel rings that glowred, green and blue at night.

Hacia el oeste, en el estuario del Loira, el proyecto de escultura Estuaire, todavía encurso, contiene más instalaciones, como la excepcional Villa Chemineé de Tatzu Nishi, unaminúscula casa situada encima de lo que parece una chimenea industrial, donde se puedepasar la noche. Pasando St. Nazaire se encuentran las salinas, ricas en flora y fauna. En laCôte Sauvage, que más que ser salvaje está bien conservada, se ubican típicas aldeaspesqueras como Le Croisic y Batz-sur-Mer. Guérande, con sus murallas intactas, prosperóeconómicamente gracias a la sal, la valiosa Fleur de Sel, que todavía hoy día se recoge enlas salinas. Si quiere disfrutar de algo especial pida una crêpe con caramel au beurre salé,salsa de caramelo con una pizca de sal.

Hacia el este de Nantes la historia le cautivará. Este tramo del río Loira, con suselegantes châteaux, sus colinas cubiertas de viñedos y sus marismas, es patrimoniomundial de la UNESCO. La ciudad de Angers es dominada por un castillo de 17 imponentestorres que alberga el Tapiz del Apocalipsis, el tapiz más largo y antiguo del mundo, conunos 600 años de antigüedad y 100 metros de largo. No muy lejos se halla Fontevraud,monasterio de 900 años, que en su día fue uno de los más grandes de Europa y es lugar desepultura de reyes. Visite sus claustros y amplias cocinas y disfrute de exposiciones de artecontemporáneo y conciertos de música clásica y músicas del mundo.

To the west, on the Loire estuary, the ongoing Estuaire sculpture project featuresmore installations. Unique is Tatzu Nishi’s Villa Cheminée: the tiny house atop whatlooks like an industrial chimney, where you can stay the night! Beyond St Nazaireare the salt marshes, rich with wildlife. On the Côte Sauvage (unspoiled rather thanwild), classic fishing villages include Le Croisic and Batz-sur-Mer. Guérande, itsmedieval ramparts intact, grew wealthy thanks to salt. Still gathered in nearbysaltpans is the highly-prized ‘fleur de sel’. For a special treat, order a crêpe, with‘caramel au beurre salé’, caramel sauce with a hint of salt.

performance of religious music. We are sure religious music lovers will be pleased to hearthat a number of excellent international solo artists and groups will be taking part in this50th edition of the Cuenca Religious Music Week, a meeting place for musicians, students,music lovers, musicologists, critics, outstanding personalities and the public in general.

Whilst here, visitors should not miss a tour of the city declared a World HeritageSite by the UNESCO. Cuenca is, amongst other things, an important Spanish abstractart reference point and headquarters of a number of cultural foundations, a refuge forartists and intellectuals and an important gastronomic centre, making it one of Spain’smost privileged Easter holiday destinations.

Over the years, the Cuenca Religious Music Week has become known as the “IberianSalzburg” thanks to its meticulous programme, the charm of its surroundings andthe magnitude of its artists. In this special 50th edition, organised by the ArtisticDirector, Pilar Tomas, visitors will find the type of programme that has, over theyears, configured the character of this magnificent event: recovered musical heritage,contemporary music, commissioned works, premieres, festival home productions (withtwo guest ballet companies this year), conferences, exhibitions, family concerts etc.

France is this year’s guest country and, as such, an important number of Frenchartists will be taking part. The Accentus Choir, conducted by Pieter Jelle de Boer, willbe performing vocal music on Holy Saturday and will continue on Palm Sunday,

Del lado de la recuperación, Les Talens Lyriques, con su fundador, Christophe Rousset,nos darán la primera audición en España del oratorio de Pergolesi San Guglielmo d’Aquitaniay la contralto Nathalie Stutzmann, que se pasa ahora a la dirección de su conjunto, Orfeo 55,se presentará con un variado concierto en torno a la figura de Vivaldi. Brigitte Lesne y suconjunto Discantus ofrecerán un programa dedicado al repertorio del Manuscrito de Huelgas.Marcel Pérès y su Ensemble Organum nos harán partícipes del rito dominico y el pianistaAlexander Tharaud rendirá homenaje a Liszt interpretando repertorio religioso.

La conmemoración del cuarto centenario de la muerte del polifonista Tomás Luis deVictoria quedará en manos de un especialista y estudioso del maestro abulense: MichaelNoone quien, al frente de su conjunto el Ensemble Plus Ultra y Schola Antiqua, interpretarála Liturgia del II Domingo de Pasión, así como las Lecciones de Tinieblas V, VI y VII, reper-torio específico del compositor para la Semana Santa.

Con seis conciertos se rinde homenaje a Schola Antiqua, el conjunto que dirige JuanCarlos Asensio, en reconocimiento a su dedicación y fidelidad a la Semana. Interpretará,en la Iglesia del Monasterio de la Concepción Francisca, fragmentos recuperados delArchivo Histórico Provincial.

Otros momentos destacados serán los dedicados a J. S. Bach: la Ofrenda Musical deFabio Bonizzoni con La Risonanza, las Cantatas BWV 42, 86, 154, 155 y 159 que dirigiráel maestro Leonhardt al frente de la Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla o el concierto a dosórganos el Domingo de Pascua en la Catedral.

The Hallé, la orquesta más antigua del Reino Unido, bajo la dirección de ChristianMandeal, será la encargada de clausurar el festival, junto al Orfeón Donostiarra, interpre-tando la Sinfonía nº 2, Resurrección, de Gustav Mahler.

Dentro del apartado de las producciones propias, podremos disfrutar de la coreografíaoriginal de la Compañía Plan B para Job: A Masque for Dancing, de Ralph VaughanWilliams, así como del ballet Uirapuru, de Heitor Villa-Lobos en una concepción escénicade Dani Pannullo. Las Jornadas se dedican este año a monasterios y música y contaráncon tres conciertos y seis conferencias que tendrán lugar en la Universidad InternacionalMenéndez Pelayo (UIMP).

Como actividad extraordinaria con motivo de su 50 aniversario, la SMR presenta,además, un nuevo ciclo que sobrepasa las fronteras temporales y geográficas de la Semana:a lo largo de todo el año 2011 se celebrarán en 8 localidades de la provincia de Cuenca8 conciertos dedicados a la música de Tomás Luis de Victoria. En cada concierto se buscaun acercamiento entre la elección del programa, el ciclo litúrgico y el espacio históricodonde se interpreta. Esta actividad se ha podido organizar gracias al mecenazgo de la CajaRural de Cuenca.

Meanwhile, the Ensemble Intercontemporain will presentworks by Huber and Pasquet amongst others. The vocal group Soli Tutti, conducted byDaniel Gautheyrie, will be performing a piece of work commissioned for the 28th CuencaReligious Music Week, ‘Dos motetes’ by Cristobal Halffter.

As far as historical works are concerned, Les Talens Lyriques and its founder,Christophe Rousset, will be presenting the first performance in Spain of the sacreddrama by Pergolesi: San Guglielmo d’Aquitania. In the meantime, the contralto, NathalieStutzmann, who will be conducting her group, Orfeo 55, will be presenting a variedconcert on the figure of Vivaldi. Brigitte Lesne and her group, Discantus, will be offeringa programme dedicated to the repertory of the Huelgas Manuscript while Marcel Peresand his Ensemble Organum will share the Dominican rite with us and the pianist,Alexander Tharaud, will pay homage to Liszt by performing a number of works from hisreligious repertoire.

The commemoration of the fourth centennial of the death of the Spanish Renaissancecomposer, Tomas Luis de Victoria, will be supervised by an expert student of thismaestro from Avila, Michael Noone, who will, together with his group, Ensemble PlusUltra and the Schola Antiqua, perform the ‘Lecciones de Tinieblas V, VI and VII,composed especially for the Holy Week.

A series of six concerts will be performed here as a tribute to the Schola Antiqua,the group conducted by Juan Carlos Asensio, in acknowledgement of its dedicationand commitment to the Cuenca Religious Music Week. These concerts will take placein the church of the Monastery of the Concepcion Francisca and will offer fragmentsrecovered from the Provincial Historical Archive

Also worth a special mention are the concerts dedicated to J. S. Bach. These includethe musical offering of Fabio Bonizzoni with La Risonanza, the Cantatas BWV 42, 86,154, 155 and 159 with Leonhardt conducting the Seville Baroque Orchestra and thedouble organ concert to take place in the Cuenca Cathedral on Palm Sunday.

The United Kingdom’s oldest orchestra, Halle, conducted by Cristian Mandeal, hasbeen charged with closing the festival, together with the Orfeon Donostiarra, withSymphony no. 2, Resurrection, by Gustav Mahler.

This year’s festival home productions will be offering the original choreography bythe Compañía Plan B of ‘Job: A Masque for Dancing’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams andUirapuru, a ballet by Heitor Villa-Lobos with staging by Dani Pannullo. The theme ofthis year’s workshops is Monasteries and Music and will include three concerts and sixconferences to be held in the International Menendez Pelayo University (UIMP).

This series of eight concerts will be performed during 2011in eight different localities and will be dedicated to the work of Tomas Luis de Victoria.Special care will be taken to coordinate the programme, place and liturgical cycle ofeach concert. Este paraje natural único de bosques, pequeños ríos y praderías que se puedenrecorrer por las diversas sendas que salen de sus pueblos, como BárcenaMayor, situado en plena reserva, derrocha fauna y flora por doquier. Sugastronomía, típica “de cuchara”, propicia una agradable visita con el frescorprimaveral, si bien, en la época estival, se puede disfrutar de un chapuzón enalguno de los pozos del río Argoza, de frías y cristalinas aguas.

Su clima es templado, con temperaturas suaves durante todo el año, y el relieve dela zona se caracteriza por montañas de altitudes discretas en la divisoria de ambos ríos,Saja y Besaya, que van ganando altitud a medida que los terrenos del parque se acercana la Cordillera Cantábrica. Las cotas más elevadas son los picos Cordel, con 2.040metros, e Iján, con 2.087.

Entre la vegetación del parque encontramos zonas de praderas, sobre todo en lasvertientes más próximas a los núcleos rurales, y a medida que uno se adentra apareceel pastizal-matorral de montaña. Los bosques más abundantes de esta franja son losrobledales y hayedos, aunque también podemos encontrar otras muchas especies comocastaños, arces, fresnos, tilos, acebos, manzanos y perales silvestres, etcétera.

En cuanto a la fauna, abundan los mamíferos como el ciervo, el jabalí, el corzo, elrebeco, y en zonas de vegetación densa puede haber algún lobo y osos pardos. En losríos predomina la trucha común. No hay que olvidar una nutrida población de aves,entre ellas, el águila real.

BÁRCENA MAYOR, LA SERENA INTEGRACIÓN DE PAISAJE Y PUEBLOEl único núcleo de población que se encuentra en el interior del parque es Bárcena

Mayor, perteneciente al municipio de Los Tojos, que fue declarado conjunto históricoartístico en 1981. Está situado a 500 metros sobre el nivel del mar y en plena ReservaNacional del Saja; es uno de los pueblos más visitados del interior de Cantabria. A él seaccede por la carretera que atraviesa el valle de Cabuérniga o bien desde la zona deCampoo a través del Puerto de Palombera. Bárcena Mayor se encuentra a orillas del

ituated on the northern side of the Cantabrian Mountain Range in the upperSaja and Besaya river basins, the Saja-Besaya Nature Park has a surface area

of 24,500 hectares of which 19,900 hectares are located in the Saja river basin and4,600 hectares in the Besaya river basin. Its height ranges from a minimum of 300meters to a maximum of just over 2,000 meters. The land on which it stands formspart of the municipalities of Los Tojos, Hermandad de Campoo de Suso, Ruente,Cieza, Arenas de Iguña and Cabuerniga.

It has a temperate climate with mild all-year-round temperatures. A number ofsmall mountains can be found situated in the dividing line between the Saja andBesaya rivers which rise as the visitor gets closer to the Cantabrian MountainRange, the highest peaks being the 2,040 meter Cordel Peak and the 2,087 meterIjan Peak.

It also houses a number of meadow areas, the majority of which can be foundcloser to the populated areas. These areas take on the appearance of mountainpastureland. The abundant woodland here is made up mainly of oak and beechgroves. Visitors will, however, find other abundant tree species such as the chestnut,maple, ash, lime, holly and wild apple and pear tree species amongst others.

As far as its fauna is concerned, the Saja-Besaya Nature Park houses a widerange of species that include the deer, boar, roe deer, and chamois and, in thedeeper wooded areas, the odd wolf and brown bear. Its rivers are predominatelyinhabited by the common trout. It also has an outstanding bird population thatincludes a variety of birds of prey such as the majestic golden eagle.

Barcena Mayor, situated in the municipality of Los Tojos and declared anartistic-historic monument in 1981, is the only village situated in the middle of theSaja National Reserve. It stands some 500 meters about sea level and is one ofinland Cantabria’s most visited villages. It can be reached from the road thatcrosses the Cabuerniga Valley or from the Campoo area through the PalomberaPass. Barcena Mayor lies on the banks of the River Argoza with its ancient stonebridge. This beautiful village maintains the atmosphere of its ancient past whichsome date as far back as the 9th century. Situated amongst the mountains in a

río Argoza, que le atraviesa y el que es posible cruzar a través de un antiguo puente de piedra.La aldea conserva aún el ambiente típico de su remoto origen, que algunos datan en elsiglo IX. Situado entre montañas y en zona de tránsito entre el valle y la meseta, todavíaquedan restos de la antigua calzada romana, aunque los primeros datos históricos seremontan a la Edad Media. El peculiar conjunto arquitectónico de Bárcena Mayor es muyconcentrado y denso y tiene una estructura rectangular. El pueblo está atravesado por doscalles principales de este a oeste y varias callejas perpendiculares; dentro del conjunto hayvarias plazas y en una de ellas un antiguo lavadero, donde hasta no hace muchos años aúnse podía ver a las mujeres de la aldea con las grandes palanganas de zinc llenas de ropa.La vivienda típica es la casa montañesa de piedra, mampostería y madera. Las fachadas seorientan al sur o al este, destacando algunos soportales con arcos de sillares y sobre todola talla en madera con decoración en vigas, pilares, aleros... La iglesia de Santa María esdel siglo XVII y en ella destaca el retablo barroco-decorativo del XVIII. A las afueras delpueblo, monte arriba, existe una pequeña ermita dedicada a la Virgen del Carmen.

En los límites del parque hay otras poblaciones también de gran belleza y tipismo comolos pueblos de Ruente, Terán de Cabuérniga, Renedo de Cabuérniga, Selores, Carrejo, Villa-suso de Cieza, Los Llares, Arenas de Iguña, Las Fraguas, Bostronizo, Cohiño, Abiada,Argüeso, Villacantid…

El patrimonio cultural de esta zona refleja el tránsito de las distintas civilizaciones que hanpoblado estas tierras. Así, entre los hitos históricos están los menhires de Sejos, uno delos vestigios más antiguos de la presencia humana en el parque. En la vertiente del Besayaestá la calzada romana de Mediaconcha. En la vertiente sur del Parque, se encuentran loscastillos de San Vicente de Argüeso y la torre medieval de Proaño. Las casonas solariegasde Cabuérniga, Ruente, Cabezón de la Sal, etcétera.

GASTRONOMÍAEl Parque Natural Saja-Besaya y la Reserva Nacional de Saja es también zona ganadera

y en todas las casas de sus bellos pueblos se cultivan pequeñas huertas familiares queaportan gran parte de las materias primas utilizadas en las cocinas de la zona.

En los pueblos de esta comarca es típico degustar el “cocido montañés”, el guiso máspopular de Cantabria elaborado con alubias blancas y berza, acompañadas del “compango”,compuesto por el chorizo, el tocino y la morcilla.

Tienen especial fama los que se toman en los restaurantes de los pueblos integrados enlos municipios de Cabuérniga, Ruente, Ucieda, Bárcena Mayor, Rionansa y Polaciones.

El puchero de alubias rojas estofadas es otro de los platos típicos de esta zona de mediamontaña.

Los guisos y asados de la caza de la reserva, la carne de vaca tudanca, raza bovina autóc-tona, y las truchas conforman la cocina más tradicional de la comarca Saja-Nansa.

Los postres caseros también cuentan con gran reconocimiento, especialmente el arrozcon leche y la leche frita.

It has a peculiar rectangular shaped density to it with two mainstreets running from east to west and a variety of small perpendicular streets as well asa number of village squares. One of these picturesque village squares houses an ancientwashing place where, not so long ago, village women could be seen with their huge zincbowls full of clothes. Its typical stone houses stand out, above all, for their splendidmasonry and woodwork. Many of the house façades, which generally face south or east,contain porches with ashlar stone arched porches and beautiful carvings on their woodenbeams, pillars, eaves etc. Meanwhile, the Church of Santa Maria, dating back to the 17thcentury, stands out for its decorative 18th century Baroque style altarpiece. Further up,on the outskirts of the mountain, stands the Virgen del Carmen Hermitage.

A number of other picturesque villages can be found on the limits of the Saja-BesayaNature Park. Worth mentioning are Ruente, Teran de Cabuerniga, Renedo de Cabuerniga,Selores, Carrejo, Villasuso de Cieza, Los Llares, Arenas de Iguña, Las Fraguas, Bostronizo,Cohiño, Abiada, Argüeso and Villacantid amongst others.

The cultural patrimony of the Saja-Besaya Nature Park is marked by the differentcivilizations that once lived here. Amongst its most important ancient monuments arethe Menhirs of Sejos, some of the most ancient remains of human presence in the area.On the slopes of the Besaya River stand the remains of the Mediaconcha Roman Roadwhile the southern slopes house the castles of San Vicente de Argüeso and the medievalProaño Tower along with the Cabuerniga, Ruente, Cabezón de la Sal etc. farmhouses.

GASTRONOMYThe Saja-Besaya Nature Park and Saja National Reserve is also a farm breeding area

with village houses generally having a small family allotment that provides a large partof the fresh food produce used in the local kitchens.

One of the most typical dishes here is, without a doubt, the famous Cantabrianfarmhouse stew, one of Cantabria’s favourite dishes. It is normally made with haricotbeans and cabbage and accompanied by the “compango” (red spicy sausage, baconand black pudding) removed from the stew once cooked and eaten separately.

This speciality is very popular in the restaurants of the villages belonging to themunicipalities of Cabuerniga, Ruente, Ucieda, Barcena Mayor, Rionansa and Polaciones.

Red bean stew is another of the famous local dishes found in this beautiful mountainarea.

Stewed and roast game and Tudanca beef, an autochthonous bovine species,together with the local trout specialities, could probably be described as the mainstayof the Saja-Nansa region’s traditional cuisine.

Finally, visitors will also find here a variety of delicious homemade desserts thatinclude its delicious rice and fried milk puddings.

o primero que llama la atención es una parrilla de radiador erguida y firme quedesemboca en un capó largo y proporcionado. La ancha parrilla lleva la estrella de

Mercedes en el centro y presenta una lama de contorno pronunciado, cromada en su partedelantera. Los faros de perfil claro completan el frontal. El rostro del nuevo SLK recuerda allegendario 190 SL de los años 50 del siglo pasado, que muchos consideran el precursorde este modelo. No obstante, el nuevo SLK también presenta similitudes con el actual alasde gaviota SLS AMG de Mercedes-Benz y con el nuevo CLS.

En el interior destaca su consola central y otras molduras que brillan con su acabadode aluminio cepillado, incluso en la versión básica. Como equipo opcional pueden elegirsemolduras de madera de raíz de nogal en color marrón oscuro brillante o de madera defresno negro brillante. Los cuatro difusores de ventilación redondos con superficie galva-nizada integrados en el cuadro de instrumentos están inspirados en el SLS.

Los generosos instrumentos redondos del SLK enmarcan el display multifunción quevisualiza la información del ordenador de a bordo. En la parte central del tablero de instru-mentos se encuentra el visualizador en color para las funciones de comunicación y entre-tenimiento, fácilmente visible para el conductor y el acompañante. En la parte superior deltablero de instrumentos puede integrarse opcionalmente un noble reloj analógico quesubraya como detalle exclusivo el carácter elegante del roadster.

Otros detalles del equipamiento de alta calidad son el volante deportivo multifunción consección inferior plana y un grueso aro forrado de cuero y, entre otros equipos opcionales, latapicería de cuero reflectante de la luz solar que reduce considerablemente el calentamientosuperficial, una impresionante iluminación de ambiente, por primera vez en color rojo, y lacalefacción integrada en el reposacabezas Airscarf disponible ya en su antecesor.

En la fecha de lanzamiento al mercado del SLK puede elegirse entre tres modelos,todos ellos propulsados por nuevos motores con inyección directa de gasolina. Losgrupos de cuatro cilindros del SLK 200 y el SLK 250 desarrollan 184 cv y 204 cv. El motorV6 del SLK 350 desarrolla una potencia 306 CV a partir de sus 3.498 cm3 y acelera en5,6 segundos de 0 a 100 km/h.

L he first feature to of the new Mercedes-Benz SLK to catch the eye is anupright radiator grille that stands proud and confident facilitating the long

and well-proportioned bonnet. The wide radiator grille bears the Mercedes-Benzstar in a prominent central position and displays a powerfully contoured fin,chromed at the front. The new SLK’s face not only resembles that of thelegendary 190 SL from the 1950s, regarded by many as being the original SLK,but also has a close visual link with the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG “gullwingmodel” and the new CLS.

Its interior stands out for the gleaming brushed aluminium centre console andother trim parts, even in the base version. Wood can be selected as an option inhigh-gloss dark brown walnut or high-gloss black ash. The four round galvanisedair outlets integrated in the dashboard bear a resemblance to those in the SLS.

The SLK’s generous round dials are flanked by a display for the informationgenerated by the online computer. The colour display for the communicationsand entertainment function is housed in the centre of the dashboard and can beeasily read by both the driver and passenger. On the top of the dashboard, alsoin the centre, sits a fine analogue clock, an unusual detail which subtly underlinesthe roadster’s stylish character.

Other high-quality items of equipment include a multifunction sports steeringwheel with a flattened bottom section and a thick leather crown plus optional sun-reflecting leather which noticeably reduces the degree to which the surfaces itcovers heat up, impressive ambient lighting and the innovative neck-level heatingsystem AIRSCARF, familiar from the predecessor.

There will initially be three models of the SLK available at its market launch,all of them powered by new engines with direct injection. The four-cylinderengines in the SLK 200 and SLK 250 draw 184 hp and 204 hp. The V6 engine inthe SLK 350 draws 306 hp from its 3,498 cm3 displacement using this power toaccelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds.

The prices of the new SLK in Spain oscillate between 42,300 and 57,150 Euros.

Pocos lugares de una población tan modesta tienen una SemanaSanta de tanta potencia gracias a la participación entusiasta de su gente. La “culpable”de esta vitalidad es la Junta Profomento que agrupa, desde hace ya más de un siglo, atodas las cofradías y los más de 4.500 cofrades que las conforman.

Procesiones como La Penitencial, con rituales tan particulares como la bendición de lasbollas o el enclavamiento. El Encuentro, una de las más curiosas de Astorga, dondese produce el espectáculo de los braceros que corren con el paso de San Juan que seacerca de manera veloz a la Virgen María –“Carrera de San Juanín”–. La del BenditoCristo de los Afligidos, del arrabal de San Andrés, que recorre la ciudad hasta laCatedral, en cuyo atrio se pronuncia el Sermón de las Siete Palabras. O la procesióndel Santo Entierro de la Vera Cruz con algunos momentos tan propios y especialescomo el desenclavado de la imagen de un Cristo articulado en la plaza Mayor sesuman a la de Resurrección del domingo para cerrar unas de las Semanas Santas mássingulares del noroeste español.

THE NEW HONDA ACCORD WILL BE AVAILABLE IN SPAINAS OF SEPTEMBER, 2011Although, the Honda Accord Sedan and Tourer will be incorporating new elementsin their restyled versions, their present successful design remains. Both havebenefitted from the noticeable changes to their headlights which have been given acleaner, crisper appearance with the previously amber indicators now in a clearfinish. On top grade cars, the lights are now bi-xenon and feature Active CorneringLights to improve night time visibility. The grille has been subtly remodelled withthe two central spars finished in the same chrome material as the outer grille, for asportier look. The rear of the Sedan model has been subtly enhanced with the rearlights having a light red finish for the reversing light, being rounded off with a lightchrome garnish above the rear license plate.

Tras una reforma proyectada por losarquitectos Nieto y Sobejano, el museo se ha transmutado en unacombinación increíble de lo moderno con lo antiguo. El nuevo edificiocontrasta con el que ya existía, un convento dominico del siglo XVI.En su interior ofrece, a través de fotografías y colecciones de etnografíay arqueología, una nueva manera de mirar a la sociedad vasca. Spring finds the shepherd, Felix Goiburu, in his farmhouse preparingIdiazabal cheese. Felix is the third-generation member of a family ofcheese makers from the Goierri district in the green heart of Euskadi, justhalf-an-hour from San Sebastian and Vitoria and an hour from Bilbao.The milk from the Latxa sheep that pasture on the Goiburu family farm isresponsible for producing “over a thousand packs of cheese a year”,according to this friendly shepherd who knows the names of each of theone hundred sheep that make up his herd. If you want to experiencerural Euskadi with its magnificent countryside and delicious gastronomy,Goierri is the perfect choice. Why not visit some of the local cheesemakers. During April you will be able to sample the first Idiazabal cheeseof the year. You can also eat out at one of the numerous cider housesor visit the Aralar and Aizkorri-Aratz nature parks. You can enjoy one ofthe largest beech groves in Europe, smell the intense aroma of thegreenery, hear the twittering of jays and song thrushes and, with a bitof luck, find herds of up to 600 sheep on their way up to higherpastureland where they generally spend the summer months.

THE NEW SAN TELMO MUSEUMIf you decide to visit San Sebastian and you like architecture, do notmiss a visit to the San Telmo Museum. Following its renovation byarchitects, Nieto and Sobejano, the Museum has transmuted into anincredible combination of old and new. The new building contrasts withthe already existing 16th century Dominican Convent building. Its interioroffers, thanks to a series of photographs and ethnological andarchaeological exhibits, a new way of looking at the Basque society.After a visit to the Museum, situated in the Old Quarter of San Sebastian,it would be unforgiveable for visitors not to try one of the mouth watering“pinchos”, small hot and cold snacks, some of which could be describedas miniature haute cuisine titbits, served in the charming city taverns.

THE BILBAO ALHONDIGA

Another example of vanguard architecture in Euskadi is the BilbaoAlhondiga. The French designer, Philippe Stark, has converted this oldwine warehouse into a building full of surprises where visitors will be ableto eat, drink, swim or visit an exhibition. One of its most impactingfeatures is the group of 43 columns, with different designs, that adornthe lower part of the Alhondiga. If you look up, you will see peopleswimming as the building roof has been converted into a swimmingpool! If, however, you miss the sea, do not hesitate to visit any ofEuskadi’s beautiful coastal towns, some of which house picturesquefishing quarters such as those at Hondarribia and Lekeitio.

If you prefer to make your way inland, you could try a trip through the RiojaAlavesa area, considered a pioneering area in wine tourism. You will findhere, within a radius of 50 kilometres, centennial family bodegas, vanguardbodegas, medieval towns and an everlasting landscape of vineyards.Finally, do not leave Euskadi without visiting its capital, Vitoria-Gasteiz,a city ideal for visiting on foot, by bicycle or by tram. This beautiful capitalhas already been proclaimed European Green Capital 2012.

S AIR NOSTRUM PIDE CAUTELA EN EL PROCESOPRIVATIZADOR DE AENA

“La música puede sonar bien pero hay que mirar detenidamente la letrapara determinar la bondad de la canción”. En estos términos se manifestóCarlos Bertomeu, consejero delegado de AIR NOSTRUM durante su inter-vención en las VI jornadas de Aeropuertos regionales al referirse al procesode privatización que ha emprendido AENA.

En opinión de Bertomeu, acercar los aeropuertos a la iniciativa privada y ala gestión de las administraciones autonómicas puede suponer una mayoreficacia, pero también puede romper el concepto de “caja única” de la redde los aeropuertos españoles. Hay que tener presente que los aeropuertosregionales son deficitarios pero ayudan a rentabilizar los aeropuertos hubcon su aportación de pasajeros de conexión. “Los grandes aeropuertostienen beneficios por sus ingresos por pasajeros y por operaciones pero silos aeropuertos regionales no les aportaran los viajeros de conexión dejaríande ser tan rentables, la periferia pierde pero aporta”, señala.

A juicio del consejero delegado de AIR NOSTRUM, otro riesgo que debeafrontar el proceso privatizador tiene que ver con el carácter monopolísticode la actividad aeroportuaria: “Todos las privatizaciones que conozco hansido para nutrir de ingresos al Estado y para aumentar la competitividaddel sector con la eficacia de la gestión privada, pero desde el punto de vistatécnico privatizar un monopolio es muy discutible porque las empresasresultantes operarán en un régimen sin competencia y, si no se le ponenlímites a su afán de lucro, van a imponer unas reglas que pueden distor-sionar el mercado”.

Bertomeu realizó estas declaraciones en las citadas jornadas celebradasen Fuerteventura sobre aeropuertos regionales en una mesa redonda dedicadaal papel de las compañías aéreas en el desarrollo económico y social del terri-torio. Junto al consejero delegado de AIR NOSTRUM, intervinieron ManuelLópez Colmenarejo, presidente de ACETA, la Asociación de CompañíasEspañolas de Transporte Aéreo; Alejandro Cruz de Llano, consejero delegadode Vueling; Ferrán Soriano i Compte, presidente de Spanair; Manuel LópezAguilar, director general comercial de Iberia; y Manuel Panadero López,director de relaciones institucionales de Air Europa.

En su análisis de la situación actual de las aerolíneas, Bertomeu explicólas dificultades a las que se enfrentan quienes, como AIR NOSTRUM, operanen corto y medio radio. “El largo radio sigue fuerte, el mercado europeo tienevisos de recuperación, en especial Francia y Alemania, pero el domésticosigue deprimido con descenso de pasajeros y de ingreso medio”, señaló elconsejero delegado de AIR NOSTRUM, que añadió que agrava la situaciónel aumento de costes que se está produciendo con la subida del precio delcarburante como consecuencia de la inestabilidad en países productores depetróleo.

Sin embargo, precisamente la crisis en los países árabes puede tenerefectos positivos en el turismo español en general. En la previsión de laevolución del sector, Bertomeu asegura que ya se está advirtiendo un mayorflujo de visitantes a algunas zonas españolas que aparecen como “destinossustitutivos” de países árabes receptores de turismo. “Se puede vivir esteaño el sueño de la recuperación turística, pero ojo estamos sólo ante unacoyuntura concreta y el modelo turístico no puede basarse en la desgracia delos demás”, advirtió.

AIR NOSTRUM DEMANDS CAUTION WITH REGARDTO THE PRIVATISATION OF AENA

“Even though the music of a song sounds good, you have to listento the lyrics to verify the benevolence of the song”. These were theterms used by Mr. Carlos Bertomeu, Chief Executive Officer of AIRNOSTRUM, during his participation in the VI Regional Airports Seminarwhen discussing the privatisation programme introduced by AENA.

In Mr. Bertomeu’s opinion, the private and regional administrationof airports could mean greater efficiency, although it could, at thesame time, interfere with the “one box” concept of the Spanish airportnetwork. Although, regional airports generally sustain losses, theirconnection passengers are a vital factor in the efficiency of hub airports.This point should be taken into careful consideration. “Large airportsmake their profits on the income provided by the amount of passengers.If, for any reason, the smaller regional airports stopped providingconnection passengers, the profits of larger airports would soon bereduced. Although, the peripheral sustains losses, it provides support”,he pointed out.

According to the Chief Executive of AIR NOSTRUM, another risk ofprivatisation is the monopolisation of the airport activity. “The mainpurpose of the privatisations I have come across has been to increase,through the efficiency of private management, Government income andsector competitiveness. However, from a technical point of view, toprivatise a monopoly is debatable as the resulting companies will beoperating without competition and if there is nobody there to placelimits on their thirst for profit, they are going to introduce rules andregulations that could distort the market”.

Mr. Bertomeu made these declarations regarding the operation ofregional airports during the seminar that took place in Fuerteaventurawhen discussing the role of airlines in the economical and socialdevelopment of a territory. Other participants included Mr. ManuelLopez Colmenarejo, President of ACETA, the Spanish Air TransportAssociation, Mr. Alejandro Cruz de Llano, Chief Executive Officer ofVueling; Mr. Ferran Soriano i Compte, President of Spanair; Mr. ManuelLopez Aguilar, Commercial General Director of Iberia and Mr. ManuelPanadero Lopez, Institutional Relations Director of Air Europa.

In his analysis of the present airline situation, Mr. Bertomeu spokeabout the difficulties short and medium distance airlines, such as AIRNOSTRUM, are having to face up to. “The long distance market remainsstrong with the European market seemingly on the road to recovery,especially in France and Germany, but the domestic market is underpressure with a decrease in passengers and average income”, pointedout the Chief Executive Officer of AIR NOSTRUM and added thatthe increase in costs produced by the increase in oil prices, due to theinstability of some oil producing countries, is aggravating the situation.

On the other hand, the crisis taking place in the Arab countries couldhave a positive effect on Spanish tourism. Mr. Bertomeu assuredparticipants that forecasts are predicting an increase in visitors tocertain parts of Spain which appear to have become the “substitutedestinations” of the more touristic Arab countries. “The tourist sectormay show signs of recovery this year, although we should keep in

mind that we are referring to a specific, isolatedsituation. It is clear that the tourist sector cannotbase its success on the misfortune of others”, hewarned.

e were three adolescents on a flight from Alicante to Gatwick, ready to make the mostof our summer holiday and, hopefully, learn some English. A Spanish guitar was, of

course, the clue that would eventually give away our nationality. We were embarking on a totallynew experience, three youngsters ready to absorb everything that came our way. My most vividmemory is of the moment we were invited into the cockpit with its impressive controls and the

immense blue horizon in the distance. It was the firsttime I had flown.Years later, as a journalist, I was asked to write about theairline you are travelling with today, from the moment itwas conceived. Do not tell my boss, but the assignmentI was given was a pleasure I would willingly have paid for.I became a guinea pig, testing different regional aircraftmodels, including the odd prototype, round-trip test flights.Between Coca Cola and Coca Cola, Carlos Bertomeu, theChief Executive Officer of AIR NOSTRUM, explained, onmore than one occasion, how aircraft actually manage tostay up in the sky, with or without propellers, with front orback engines. The best surprise gift I have ever had was from a person who always sees herself as a small,flickering red light in the middle of an enormous map of the world. She woke me up oneSaturday and took me on a surprise visit to the airport, suitcase in hand. I do not know howshe managed it, but I was given a window seat. I had absolutely no idea of where I was going,I was fitted with a pair of earphones so as not to spoil the surprise. Todo nuevo para unas esponjasinocentes dispuestas a absorber cualquier cosa que se plantase ante los cinco sentidos.Y, de todas, la imagen que más recuerdo es aquella cabina de avión a la que nos colaron,repleta de botones y un horizonte azul inmenso queinundaba las ventanas. Era mi primera vez.

Años después me tocó cubrir como periodista lavida de esta aerolínea en la que viajan, desde que seestaba gestando como una idea de negocio. No se lodigan a mis jefes, pero era todo un placer por el quehubiese pagado. Me he prestado de cobaya para probarvarios de sus aviones, incluso prototipos que nuncacompraron, en vuelos de ida y vuelta en el mismoaeropuerto. Carlos Bertomeu, el consejero delegado,entre Coca Cola y Coca Cola, me ha explicado decenasde veces por qué vuela un avión. Con hélices y sin ellas,con motores delante y detrás. Me ha diseccionado unaparato hasta el esqueleto. Es igual, no lo intenten más.Nunca entenderé cómo vuelan. Pero me apasiona volar.

Una montaña, una arruga. Una carretera, una línea.Un camión, una hormiga. Un pantano, un charco. Unanube, un algodón. Un mar, un espejo. Un desierto, unsimple montón de arena. Qué quieren que les diga, alos niños siempre nos ha gustado jugar a gigantes. Yel avión es el disfraz de Gulliver que siempre quisimostener para viajar por la inmensidad de la imaginación.

Inventarán trenes superveloces, coches con todaslas comodidades, motos molonas o ciudades-barcocon áreas metropolitanas. Pero a mí me reserven unapequeña ventanilla de avión y me dejen soñar despierto.Sólo quiero desafiar al reloj y al tiempo, a la noche y alamanecer, al giro de la Tierra y a los astros. Déjenmeabstraerme de ese mundo tan complejo de ahí abajo.Sólo es un diminuto paisaje, en el que uno se complicala vida a diario, simplemente, para seguir viviendo.

El regalo más inesperado que me han hecho nuncase lo debo a una persona que siempre se ve a sí misma como una lucecita roja parpadeante,en medio de un gran mapamundi. Ella me despertó un sábado y me llevó por sorpresa a unaeropuerto con una maleta en la mano. No sé cómo se lo montó, pero me sentaron –enventanilla, por supuesto– sin saber adónde iba y con unos cascos de música para que nooyese nada. Habían pasado veinte años y había volado a decenas de aeropuertos. Perocuando el frío y la humedad me recibieron a pie de pista, supe que había vuelto a aterrizaren Gatwick.

Si alguna vez me ven en pasillo, por favor, no se inquieten cuando estire el cuello. Sóloquiero dejar volar mi imaginación.
