Entre 1108 y 1118 se fundaron tres órdenesde carácter religioso-militar para asistir y pro-teger a los peregrinos que se dirigían a losSantos Lugares: la Orden de los PobresCaballeros de Cristo, conocida más tardecomo la Orden del Temple, la Orden de losHospitalarios de San Juan de Jerusalén y laOrden de los Hermanos HospitalariosTeutónicos.

Los TemplariosMonjes-soldados: Guardianes de la Fe,Guardianes de la Tierra Santa, Guardianes delos Hombres.

Esta orden de carácter religioso-militar fuefundada en Jerusalén en 1118 por nuevecaballeros, con la denominación oficial de“Orden de los Pobres Caballeros de Cristo”,posteriormente se les conoce por los“Caballeros del Templo de Salomón”(Templarios), denominación surgida tras insta-larse en el antiguo templo de Salomón.El Papa Inocencio II reconoció la orden deltemple en el año 1139.El sello de los Templarios, insignia de la orden;dos caballeros montados en el mismo caballorepresentan la doble vocación de la orden, reli-giosa y militar. Con una inscripción en Latínque dice “sigilum militum Xpisti” (Sello de lamilicia de Cristo).

ArmadurasArmoursLa vestimenta de los templarios, como sus banderas yestandartes, utilizaba el color blanco (símbolo de su voca-ción religiosa) y una cruz de anchos brazos de color rojoen el centro de su pecho.Este símbolo representa los cuatro elementos (los brazos)y la “quintaesencia” (el centro). Cruz Bermeja, otorgada por el Papa Eugenio III en 1147con el fin de que ese signo les sirviera de escudo y les man-tuviese firmes en la lucha contra el infiel.La difusión y el conocimiento de esta Cruz de los templa-rios no tuvo fronteras, se extendió por todo el mundo, yfue utilizada por Cristóbal Colón en su viaje del descubri-miento como símbolo en “las tres Carabelas”.

Los caballeros de Santiago soloadmitían nobles en su hermandad. Desdemediados del siglo XIII la Corona inter-venía directamente en el nombramiento delos maestres y a partir de 1485 el maestraz-go de la Orden lo ostentaba el rey.

ORDEN DE LOS CABALLEROSTEUTÓNICOSLa tradición asocia a la fundación de laOrden al establecimiento de un hospitalalemán en Jerusalén.Hacia 1191, el Papa les reconoce comoorden religiosa bajo el nombre de Hospitalde Santa María de los Alemanes deJerusalén. ORDER OF THE KNIGHTS OF St.JAMES Following the example of the templarknights, about the year 1158, a group ofthirteen Castilian knights decided to dovote of protecting the pilgrims who weregoing to Santiago de Compostela. Some years later, in 1171, the knights deci-ded to take monastic votes under SanAgustin's rule, and later they obtain therecognition of the Pope Alejandro III. Their purposes were exclusively militaryhaving their headquarters in Montalbán(Aragon). The knights of Santiago onlyadmitted nobles into their brotherhood.From the middle of the XIIIth century theCrown was intervening directly in theappointment of the grand masters andfrom 1485 the Order Grand Master wasthe king.

ORDER OF THE TEUTONICKNIGHTS The tradition associates to the foundationof the Order the establishment of aGerman hospital in Jerusalem. About 1191, the Pope recognizes them asreligious order under the name of Hospitalof Saint Mary of the Germans fromJerusalem. In a beginning it was of medi-cal and charitable character, but in 1198 itassumes also a military character. It is atthis time when born the Order of theTeutonic knights.

VestimentaClothingLOS CABALLEROS HOSPITALARIOSLa Orden del Hospital de San Juan deJerusalén tiene sus orígenes hacia el año 1070,cuando un grupo de mercaderes italianos cons-truyen un hospital en Jerusalén para la atencióna los peregrinos.Al crecer la popularidad de los templarios, losHospitalarios se ven en la necesidad de recon-vertirse en monjes guerreros para poder optar alas donaciones que recibían las ÓrdenesMilitares, aunque nunca abandonaron sus fun-ciones asistenciales y caritativas.En 1306 invadieron la isla de Rodas establecien-do allí su cuartel general. Más tarde se traslada-ron a la isla de Malta, donde siguieron mante-niendo la independencia de su estado y pasarona ser conocidos como “los caballeros de Malta”.

LOS CABALLEROS DE LA ORDEN DECALATRAVAOrden militar-religiosa fundada en Castilla, en elsiglo XII, por el Abad Don Raimundo de Fitero,con el objetivo inicial de proteger la villa deCalatrava (cerca de la actual Ciudad Real). A lamuerte del Abad, el nuevo maestre, don Garcíaadoptó la regla cisterciense y ese mismo año laOrden fue reconocida por el Papa. En el año1212, la Orden de Calatrava era una de las máspoderosas de Castilla. Desde 1254 el monarcainfluyó en la elección de los maestres y a partirde 1476 tomó el control directo de la Orden.La Cruz de Calatrava, emblema de la orden esuna cruz griega de gules con flores de lis en laspuntas.

THE HOSPITABLE KNIGHTS The Order of the Hospital of San Juan fromJerusalem has its origins about the year 1070,when a group of Italian merchants construct ahospital in Jerusalem for the attention to the pil-grims. When grows the popularity of the templar, theHospitable needs to change to warrior monks tobe able to get the donations that were receivingthe Military Orders, though they never left theirwelfare and charitable functions. In 1306 they invaded the island of Rhodes esta-blishing there their headquarters. Later theymoved to the island of Malta, where they conti-nued supporting the independence of their stateand passed to be known as " The knights ofMalta ".

THE KNIGHTS OF CALTRAVAS ORDER Military - religious order been founded onCastile, on the XIIth century, for the AbbotDon Raimundo de Fitero, with the initial aimto protect Calatrava villa (near the currentCiudad Real). To the death of the Abbot, thenew grand master, don García adopted theCistercian rule and the Pope recognized thesame year the order. In the year 1212,Calatrava order was one of the most powerfulof Castile. From 1254 the monarch influencedthe election of the grand masters and from1476 he took the direct control of the order.
