WARM UP Broken Telephone (10 minutes)

Divide the class in two groups and make them form two lines, and giveeach group a message. The first person of the line has to whisper what she or he heard to thenext person. Each person can only say, "Can you please repeat that? Whenthe message reaches the end of the line that person must speak out loud. Oftentimes the message will be completely different when it reaches theend. Try to find out where the chain broke! In a big group you can send themessage two ways and find out which team comes closest to the realmessage.

Optional Message: My best friends had organized the party before I gothome. I wish I had organized it with them but I was traveling abroad. (Theteacher can create other messages.)

    PRESENTATION (20 minutes)

Ask the following questions to the Ss.

1- What do you know about Captain America, The X-Men, The Incredible

    Hulk, and The Fantastic Four?

2- Which one do you like more? Why?

3- Do you know about the person who created these comics?

Now, Give each Ss a copy of Appendix A.

    The king of comics

Jack Kirby is know to comic fans all over the world as the King of Comics. By

the time Kirby died in 1994, he had created some of the most popular comic

characters of all time, including Captain America, The Fantastic Four; the X-

    Men and The Incredible Hulk.

Kirbys dynamic style has had a profound effect on comic art. Defining

characteristics of his illustrations include muscular heroes, complex machines

and vehicles, angular lines and bold colors.

  • 8/4/2019 Casi Terminado Lesson Plan

    2/17

But it was not only his drawing style that made Kirbys comics popular. Before

Captain American appeared in 1941, superheroes had been models of

perfection with little in common with the people they saved. Kirbys characters

were different, however, because they had normal, everyday problems.

Captain American, for example, came from a very poor background. Both his

parents had died when he was a boy, and he was a frail and skinny young manuntil he was given a Super-Soldier Serum.

Bruce Banner, who later became the incredible Hulk, was brought up by an

aunt after his insane father had killed his mother.

And the Fantastic Four are a dysfunctional Family of superheroes: In spite of

their amazing powers, the family constantly argued and fell out.

Jack Kirbys combination of artistic genius and human insight revolutionized the

comic world and continues to inspire comic artists to this day.

Discuss the following questions with the Students.

1- Why do you think comic stories cause such impact on people?

2- Had it been another way of entertainment before Comic Stories

appeared? Which ones do you think they were?

READING PRACTICE (25 minutes)Make Ss read the following lecture to answer the following questions.

MILAN Monday July 27 (Reuters) - Italian police on Monday questioned a British pilot

who held 148 passengers aboard his plane for 40 minutes after landing in Milan because no

one would admit to being the person who broke the strict no-smoking rules.

Sue Harrison, a spokeswoman for Go, the new low-cost carrier that is part of British

Airways Plc, said the incident happened on Sunday afternoon after a flight from Stansted to

Milan's Malpensa airport. Go made its first flight in May.

She said that one passenger had blocked the smoke detector in one of the plane's toilets and

had smoked a cigarette in violation of Go's no-smoking rules and strict safety standards.

On arrival, captain Bryan Bliss, a 57-year-old pilot with 28 years experience, asked the

culprit to own up. No one came forward and after 40 minutes, Bliss finally let them go.

He was then detained by police at the airport for holding passengers against their will,

    Harrison said.

"He was not arrested. He was detained. He helped answer their questions," she said by

    telephone from London.

She did not know how long the questioning lasted but said Bliss had been allowed to go

and had flown the plane back from Malpensa to Stansted later in the day.

"We are continuing to talk to the police to make sure we answer all their questions,"

Harrison said. "We won't compromise on safety."

She said there was no likelihood of any legal action against Bliss and said both sides were

being "very helpful". Police at Malpensa declined to comment while questioning was still

    under way.

    Helen:Oh no, was it Michal?

Tim: Yes, you just missed him!

    Helen:Oh, no!

Tim: He said to send you his love. Why don't you call him back?Helen: No. He said he needed some space, so I've got to give him some space.

But I wish I'd been here when he called. What else did he say?

Tim: Oh, he sounded well, he's working hard, his dad's a bit better, nothing

    much really.

    Helen:I really miss him.

Tim: You need to get out and about you know.

Helen:I suppose so. Shall we all go and see a movie tonight?

Tim: I'd be up for it, but I think Alice has gone out with Paul, to some sort of art

    exhibition, I think.

Helen:Again? That's interesting. I think those two might be getting serious.Michal asked Hellen for some space after they broke up

    PRACTICE 3

    LISTENING ACTIVITY (20 minutes)

Listen to the following audio and the students are going to write sentences

about what the people in the audio said using the structures studied.

    AUDIOSCRIPT

Arienne, NorwayMy one regret... I can't really answer that because I don't really have anyregrets. All my life I have basically had a few dreams and my dreams Ihave basically fulfilled. My first dream was going to the United States onexchange and I did that and then my second big dream was going toJapan on exchange, which I also did, and I'm very happy about the fact

  • 8/4/2019 Casi Terminado Lesson Plan

    16/17

that I am able to fulfill my dreams because not all people can do what I'vebeen able to do.

Jeff, CanadaRegrets! I don't regret very much but I have a couple of regrets. One is

that I played too much sports when I was young and I didn't pick up anymusic. I would have liked to play a musical instrument, and my otherregret is that I'm uni-lingual. I only speak one language and I would haveliked to learn another language when I was young.

Shibika, OmanMy biggest regret is not excepting a scholarship offer that I was given afew years ago. Instead I took another offer and I do regret it even thoughI'm happy where I'm at right now, but I wish I had taken that offer before.

Fred, CanadaOK, my biggest regret! My biggest regret would have to be four yearsago, I was living in Spain and I was having such a great time and then forsome reasons, I had to go back to Canada and still to this day, I'm havinga hard time with that decision. I wish I had stayed in Spain because mylife was so great. I was going to the beach every day and it was such asunny country and the people were very nice.

Kevin, South KoreaAbout seven or eight years ago, I was staying in Canada, but I had to

come back then because my father had some problem in his company, but he told us that we could stay for a year or two longer, but so I hope Icould have stayed a little longer.

Rebecca, AustraliaOne of my regrets is that I have not travelled. When I was younger, Ireally wish that I could have travelled overseas during high school, takenup some exchange programs like I am now, through university, eventravelled with my family overseas, but then it does it's down problems, that I have been able to travel in my own country throughout the years, so

    that's my regret.
