On display until June is the 5th edition of this series, entitled

potential for different combinations is endless.

Impressionism and Open-Air Painting.
From Corot to Van Gogh
In June 1880 the journalist mile Taboureaux, an art
correspondent for the Parisian magazine La Vie moderne, went
to Vtheuil to interview Monet. In his article he recounted how,
on disembarking on the jetty, he met the painter and asked if he
could go to his studio in order to talk in peace. Monet replied:
My studio! I have never had a studio and I dont understand
why anyone would shut himself up in a room. Pointing to theSeine, the hills and the village of Vtheuil, Monet added, This is
my studio.
The Impressionist painters boasted of not possessing studios
and of always working from life. Painting outdoors was in fact
one of the identifying marks of this French artistic movement.
So were the Impressionists the first to paint outdoors?
In fact, when the groups first exhibition opened to the

acciones mitolgicas, histricas o religiosas. Aun as, concibi
a century. Specifically, it was the Neo-classical French painter
Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes (1750-1819) who began to
practice it in a systematic manner during his last period in Rome
from 1782 to 1784. Valenciennes not only produced more thanone hundred studies outdoors during that period but he also
grasped that shadows are not black but blueish in colour and
he experimented with painting the same motif (some simple
chimneys) at different times of the day.
Valenciennes was not, however, an Impressionist painter.
For him, the ideal of landscape was the heroic landscape in
which nature constituted the framework in which mythological,
historical and religious actions took place. Nonetheless, he saw
outdoor painting in oil as a necessary practice for learning to
paint landscape and as a type of exercise of the hand and eye
that allowed artists to grasp the variety of nature, for example,
the different species of plants and trees, in order not to have to
make use of the imagination or invention. Whatever the case,
outdoor studies remained a private pictorial exercise and a
supporting method for subsequently composing the finished
landscape in the studio. As such, they lacked the necessary status
to be exhibited at the Salon.
Written in 1800, Valenciennes manual legitimised outdoor
painting and became an essential reference for French landscape
painters for almost a century. In 1883 Camille Pissarro wrote to
his son Lucien: In the box you will find a book that has been
split up into various sections for easier use; Guillaumin sent it to
you. It was written by the famous Valenciennes. Its old but its
still the best and the most practical.
The exercise of painting outdoors also spread across much
of Europe and the USA before 1850. However, the Central

European painters adhered to minute detail rather than
favouring the visual synthesis characteristic of the French artists.
English and American painters for their part associated the
practice of outdoor painting with studies of a scientific naturesuch as those produced by botanists and geologists.
While working outdoors and in the studio originally implied
two different phases of artistic creation, in France the difference
between the two because less distinct over time. Corot extended
outdoor painting to the whole of his artistic practice and
frequently moved between working indoors in the studio and
outside. In addition, from the 1820s onwards a growing number
of painters exhibited some of their studies at the Salon alongside
finished compositions as proofs of the veracity of those works.
The practice of working outdoors occupied a key position
not just among the French Neo-classical painters but also among
their heirs, the painters of the Barbizon School (Rousseau,Daz de la Pea, Dupr, etc). They regularly worked from life
outdoors and imitated the sketchy handling of their studies in
the works they produced in the studio. Around the mid-19th
century artists such as Daubigny and Courbet completed works
outdoors that were intended for the Salon.
The Impressionists were the first to systematically renounce
the practice of finishing their paintings in the studio and made
their work from life, with its vibrant, sketchy handling, the
centre of their artistic practice. For these painters, working
indoors in the studio when their landscapes no longer depicted
historical events but simply nature itself introduced an element
of falseness in the painting that had to be avoided. In parallel,
they considered their paintings executed outdoors as finished,
definitive works that were worthy of public display.
Originally conceived as one more academic exercise,
painting outdoors thus became the basis for the most direct
attack on academicism ever mounted by artists.

Hiperrealismo 1967-2012

Hyperrealism 1967-2012
Hyperrealism is the everyday raised to the category of
art: tomato ketchup bottles, tin toys and the bodywork of
motorbikes are all depicted in the painstaking manner of a still
life by an Old Master. Through the use of a close-up viewpoint
and blown-up scale these de-contextualised objects become
icons of painting.
Hyperrealism offers a reflection on the conventions of our
gaze, juxtaposing reality with its image. These works encourage
us to question the way we see the world around us through
the representation of the everyday and even the banal. This
exhibition at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza presents a survey
of the work of three generations of Hyperrealist artists from the
1960s to the present day.
Due to its proximity to photographic techniques,
Hyperrealism was initially termed photo-realism by Louis
K. Meisel, the original promoter of the group both within the
USA and abroad. His New York gallery became the movements
meeting point from the outset and was fundamental in its
development prior to the point when it achieved international
recognition at Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972. Organised by
Harald Szeemann, that edition of Documenta offered two

opposing visions of the capitalist world: Social Realism onthe one hand, which was associated with alienated man, and
photographic realism on the other, with its links to the object
and consumer society.
Driving mirrors, bumpers and shop windows are some
of the fetishes of Hyperrealism; the forms reflected on their
polished surfaces bring together different spatial zones in a
single image while also revealing their two-dimensionality.
Their fragmentary nature is combined with a capacity to offer
a kaleidoscopic image of the real world, resulting in different
perspectives of single reality. Incorporating all these fragments
into the painting requires the systematic use of technical and
mechanical procedures that allow the artist to precisely transferall the information from the photograph onto the final canvas.
This process may last months and is thus completely different
to the instantaneous nature of taking photographs. The
artist sees each detail as a small work of art in itself while the
combination of these elements creates a final, high-definition
image.
The most recent generation of Hyperrealist artists has
made use of the new technological advances in reproduction
processes, giving rise to works of an astonishing level of detail.
Even in their broad, panoramic views with their seemingly
distant viewpoints it is possible to come up close and discover
figures, cars and reflections that convey the precise time of dayand city depicted. This attitude is comparable to that of the
voyeur: we are spying through tiny windows on the daily life of
cities such as New York and Las Vegas.

Around ten works from the Museums Permanent

interior painting. Pairings of works from different periods andin different styles reveal the evolution of this genre in the hands
of artists such as Nicolas Maes, Emanuel de Witte, William

here in an installation in which the interior is not just a physical
space but also a state of mind of the figures in the works.
A range of subjects from everyday, family or private life
convey the calm and tranquility of domestic interiors and the
introspection of the women who people them. Light plays an
important role, either natural light, as in The Naughty Drummer

macrofotografas, radiografas, reflectografas infrarrojas y
Restoration of Tintorettos Paradiso completed
After more than a year of study and restoration, from 4
March visitors can once again see Tintorettos Paradisoin its
habitual location and fully returned to its original splendour.
Controlling the deterioration suffered by the painting since its
creation around 1588, ensuring its correct preservation and
recovering its original appearance were the most important
goals of this project that benefited from the support of Bank
of America Merrill Lynch and which, in its final phase over the
past eight months, has taken place in full view of the visiting
public for the first time.
An initial phase of in-depth study using techniques
that included macro-photography, radiography, infra-
red reflectographs and chemical analysis allowed for an
understanding of the lengthy process involved in creating the
painting and also revealed interesting details about Tintorettos
working methods. These include the use of lapis lazuli,
which was a highly prized pigment at the time, and his secret
procedure of using ground glass mixed with pigment to reflect
the light and add luminosity to the painting. In addition, these
analyses showed changes in the composition of the work that
were not visible to the naked eye such as the presence of nude
figures that the artist subsequently covered with draperies, the
modification or elimination of some figures and the existence
of inscriptions in some various of the composition. Also newly
revealed were Tintorettos preparatory drawings on the canvas,
which he used to arrange the figures in the composition.
Subsequently covered over with layers of paint, they also
indicate the successive phases in the creation of the work.
Overall, the result of this detailed and painstaking project
has been to halt and prevent any further deterioration
of the painting to the greatest possible extent. It has also
contributed extremely valuable information that facilitates an
understanding of the painting as a whole, the context in which
it was made and the working practices of one of the mostimportant painters of the 16th century.

Museum and university. new agreement with the uned
This January the Museum signed a collaborative agreement with the University for Long
Distance Studies (UNED) for the joint organisation of a variety of courses on art history.
This agreement, the first with a national university, joins the already existing one between
the Thyssen and the public universities of the Region of Madrid. It implies the strengthening
of a collaboration that began in 2011 when the Museum hosted one of the UNEDs summer
courses, then continued with the jointly organised course From the Collection to the Museum
in 2012. In the light of this new agreement the two parties involved are now working on the
programming of a course for this summer.
