Es una jornada que se ha utilizado habitualmente para realizar diferentes reivindicaciones sociales y laborales a favor de las clases trabajadoras por parte, fundamentalmente, de los movimientossocialistas,anarquistasycomunistas, entre otros. Tambin se la denominaDa del Trabajo.Desde su establecimiento en la mayora de pases (aunque la consideracin de da festivo fue en muchos casos tarda) por acuerdo del Congreso Obrero Socialista de laSegunda Internacional, celebrado enParsen1889, es una jornada de lucha reivindicativa y de homenaje a losMrtires de Chicago. Estos sindicalistasanarquistasfueron ejecutados enEstados Unidospor su participacin en las jornadas de lucha por la consecucin de la jornada laboral de ocho horas, que tuvieron su origen en lahuelgainiciada el1 de mayode1886y su punto lgido tres das ms tarde, el4 de mayo, en laRevuelta de Haymarket. A partir de entonces se convirti en una jornada reivindicativa de los derechos de los trabajadores en sentido general celebrada en mayor o menor medida en todo el mundo.EnEstados Unidos,Canady otros pases no se celebra esta conmemoracin. En su lugar se celebra elLabor Dayel primer lunes de septiembre en un desfile realizado enNueva Yorky organizado por la Noble Orden de los Caballeros del Trabajo (Knights of Labor, en ingls). El presidente estadounidenseGrover Cleveland, auspici la celebracin en septiembre por temor a que la fecha de mayo reforzase el movimientosocialistaen los Estados Unidos desde1882. Canad se uni a conmemorar el primer lunes de septiembre en vez del primero de mayo a partir de1894.

The Labour Day or May Day is the celebration par excellence of the world labor movement. It is a journey that has been commonly used to perform different social and labor in favor of the working classes by essentially the movimientossocialistas, anarchists and communists, among other claims. It is also called Labor Day.Since its establishment in most countries (though considering holiday was often late) by agreement of the Socialist Workers Congress of the Second International, held in Paris in 1889, is a day of struggle and tribute to the Martyrs Chicago. These sindicalistasanarquistas were executed in the United States for its participation in the days of struggle for the attainment of the working day of eight hours, which originated in the strike began on 1 inMay 1886 and its peak three days later, on 4 May in laRevuelta Haymarket. Thereafter it became a day of protest for the rights of workers in general held in varying degrees worldwide.

In the United States, Canada and other countries this commemoration is not celebrated. Instead Labor Day is celebrated in a parade held in New York and organized by the Noble Order of the Knights of Labor (Knights of Labor, in English) the first Monday in September. US President Grover Cleveland, hosted the celebration in September for fear that the May date would strengthen the socialist movement in the United States since 1882. Canada joined commemorate the first Monday in September instead of May from 1894 .
