Reseña HistóricaHistorical Review

Como todas las ciudades argentinas fue fundada porespañoles, con un sello que el paso de los siglos no podrá borrarjamás: DOCTA y CULTA por excelencia desde sus albores.

Un sevillano, Jerónimo Luís de Cabrera con expresasórdenes del Virrey del Perú, llegó en 1573 y eligiendo unabarranca del Río al que los nativos llamaban Suquía, marcó elcomienzo el 6 de Julio de lo que sería una gran ciudad: "LaCórdoba de la Nueva Andalucía".

El temor a que el río se desbordara, hizo que el centro de laciudad se traslade, años mas tarde, unos pocos kilómetros máshacia el oeste. El primer plano marcaba precisamente el centrode la ciudad tomando como eje principal la Plaza Mayor y comoera costumbre española, alrededor de la misma se ubicaban lasedificaciones de mayor importancia tales como la IglesiaCatedral, símbolo de la religión e inmediatamente a su lado ElCabildo, sede de todas las actividades políticas, administrativasy judiciales de la ciudad.

As all Argentinian cities, Córdoba was founded by Spaniards,with a seal that even the passing of the centuries could nevererase: LEARNED and ERUDITE par excellence since the beginning.

A Sevillian conqueror, Jerónimo Luís de Cabrera, with ordersfrom the Peru Viceroy, arrived in 1573 and choosing a gully of theRiver which natives called Suquía, on July 6th he marked thebeginning of what it would be a great city: “Cordoba of la NuevaAndalucia".

A few years later, the city was moved some kilometres towardthe west for fear that the river would burst its banks. The first mapof the city marked exactly the center of the city taking as main axisthe main square and like was Spanish custom, around the squarethere were the most important buildings such as the Cathedral,symbol of religion and immediately on their side The City Hall,headquarter of all the administrative, political and judicialactivities of the city.

Centro HistóricoThe historical Center

A partir del año 1577 con el traslado de la ciudad, comenzóa vislumbrarse cómo sería el trazado definitivo de la misma. Elplano original contaba con setenta manzanas distribuidas apartir de la plaza Mayor. La incipiente organización, la falta derecursos económicos sumado a la carencia de mano de obraespecializada hicieron que el crecimiento fuera lento. Lacreación de la Gobernación de Córdoba del Tucumán en el año1783, junto con la llegada del primer Gobernador Intendenteel Marqués de Sobremonte marcó el comienzo de grandesprogresos. Agua corriente, construcción definitiva del Cabildo,inauguración de la Catedral, creación del primer espacio verdeo pulmón para los cordobeses y un sinnúmero de obras queaún hoy se pueden disfrutar.

Y el siglo XX que nos anunciaba un importante festejo“1916 Aniversario de la independencia Argentina” hizo que lafisonomía del Centro Histórico nuevamente cambiará, allevantarse la monumental estatua en honor al padre de laPatria con lo que cambió el nombre de la Plaza Mayor.

Since 1577 after the city moved to the new settlement, discussionsabout its final sketch began. The original map had seventy blocksdistributed from the main square. The incipient organization, the lackof economic resources and a shortage of skilled hand labor made the

growthof the city slow. Thecreation of the Government of Cordobadel Tucumán in the year 1783, together with the arrivalof first Governor Mayor called The Marquis of Sobremonte, markedthe beginning of great progress. This included water supplies, theconstruction of the Cabildo, the inauguration of the Cathedral, thecreation of the first recreational area and an endless number of publicworks that we still enjoy.

And the 20th century that announced an important feast “the1916 Anniversary of the Argentinan independence” made theappearance of the Historical Center change again. A monumentalstatue in honor to the father of the Country, San Martin, was placedin the middle of the main square giving to it this name.

4) Oratorio del Obispo Mercadillo: Pequeña construcciónde comienzos del siglo XVIII, donde se levantara la casa queocupo el primer Obispo de Córdoba el dominico Manuel deMercadillo en el año 1699 cuando se ordenó el traslado de laDiócesis desde Santiago del Estero a Córdoba.

1) San Martin Square:The present forestation be-longs to the middle of the20th century, and has manyspecies from different coun-tries. This square is the sce-nery of all the official acts ofCordoba city.

2) The Cathedral: Itsconstruction took almost200 years, therefore it has

four different styles. It is considered a true colonial jewel. Its interiorwas decorated at the beginning of the 20th century by the MasterEmilio Caraffa.

3) Cabildo: Its construction dates from the end of the 18thcentury. Its facade has fifteen colonial arches covered with marble;two well-defined spaces inside surrounded by two patios and anunderground construction where there were probably cells.

4) Obispo Mercadillo Oratory: A small construction from thebeginning of the 18th century, where the first Bishop of Cordoba, theDominican Manuel de Mercadillo, lived in the year 1699 when theBishopric was ordered to move from Santiago del Estero to Córdoba.

ManzanaJesuíticaJesuit Block

En 1599 Llegaron a Córdoba los Padres Jesuitas instalándoseen la manzana que hoy es Patrimonio de la Humanidad.Educadores por excelencia y dirigidos por el Provincial Diegode Torres pusieron manos a la obra al proyecto que marcarapor siempre nuestra ciudad: La creación de un ColegioMáximo. Se hizo realidad luego de varios inconvenienteseconómicos en el año 1613, gracias al generoso aporte dequien fuera, a la sazón, Obispo de la ciudad Fray Fernando deTrejo y Sanabria.

A partir de ese momento, no cesó el impulso realizador yprogresista de los padres que, con donaciones y aportesgenerosos de los vecinos adquirieron propiedades, una de ellasconvertida en el año 1687 en el primer Convictorio de NuestraSeñora de Monserrat cimiento del colegio secundario mástradicional en la actualidad; y otras en establecimientosagrícolo ganaderos y Centros Evangelizadores de excelencia:Las Estancias desde donde obtenían los recursos económicospara mantener la Universidad, el Convictorio, y el Noviciado.

En el año 2000, la UNESCO declara a todo el conjuntoJesuítico como Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

In 1599 the Jesuit arrived to Cordoba and settled in the block,declared since the year 2000 humanity Cultural Heritage by Unesco.Teachers directed by the Provincial Priest Diego de Torres starting to

workat the cultural project thatmarked for always our city: The creation ofthe Maximum College. It becomes real in 1613 after variouseconomical problems; when the Bishop Fray Fernando of Trejo ySanabria gave an important donation. In the year 1687 receivedanother one from the Duarte Quiros priest whose father’s housebecame in one of the most traditional secondary Scholl: Convictorioof the maximum College named “Our lady of Monserrat”.

Neighbours also give some lands used by the religious to build theEstancias: Religious, Cultural and agricultural Center to obtaineconomic resources to support the Jesuits establishment.

Ubicados en la esquina de la Calle Caseros y Obispo Trejo, nosdisponemos a contemplar el majestuoso muro, testigo mudo detantos siglos dedicados a la educación:

1) Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús: Se inauguró en el año 1671,por lo que se considera como la más antigua del país. Su estilo essimple y rústico donde se aprecia la decoración pétrea. A pesar desus tres ingresos tiene una sola nave. Su interior deslumbra por lacuriosa conformación de la bóveda recubierta en madera.

2) Patio principal de la Universidad: Fue diseñado por elreconocido arquitecto jesuita italiano Andrés Bianchi quien utilizobóvedas de crucería para el diseño de los claustros.

3) Librería Jesuítica: Mediante un decreto presidencial del año2000, la universidad recuperó parte de la librería original de lospadres jesuitas, que hasta ese momento estaba en poder de labiblioteca de los niños expósitos en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.

4) Salón de grados: Un exquisito recinto destinado al acto detesis doctorales, muestra la excelencia y el buen gusto.Revestimiento en telas de brocato, arañas de cristal y una acuarelaen la bóveda, obra de un reconocido pintor cordobés, deslumbra yretrotrae a aquellos tiempos señoriales.

5) Colegio Nacional de Monserrat: Nació en la esquina deCaseros y Obispo Trejo y en el año 1782 se trasladó al actualemplazamiento, su fachada fue remodelada en el siglo XX por elarquitecto Jaime Roca quien le incorporó una torre reloj, inspiradoen los tradicionales colleges americanos. Este tradicional colegioluego de varias discusiones recibe también a niñas.

At the corner of Caserosand Obispo Trejo streets, wecan contemplate themajestic wall, silent witnessto the centuries devoted toeducation:

1) Compañia de JesusChurch: It was inauguratedin 1671, and it is consideredthe oldest of the country. Itsstyle is simple and rustic,

made of stone. This church has three entrances and one nave. In theinterior, you’ll find a unique vaulted roof made of wood.

2) The Main Patio of the University: It was designed by the JesuitItalian architect Andrés Bianchi who used star-shaped vaults for thedesign of the cloisters for the classrooms and Noviciate.

3) Jesuits library: Part of the original library of the Jesuits wasrecovered by a presidential decree in the year 2000, since until thatmoment, it belonged to the children’s Orphanage library in BuenosAires.

4) Undergraduate’s Room: A luxurious place destined to thestudent’s doctoral thesis. It shows excellence and good taste. Wallscovered by cloths of brocato, chandeliers and a watercolour in the vaultmade by a recognized painter: Armando de Sica.

5) Montserrat National School: It was located on the corner ofCaseros Street and Obispo Trejo Street and in 1782 it was moved to the

present corner. Its facade was remodelled in the 20th century by thearchitect Jaime Roca who built a clock tower, inspired by the traditionalAmerican colleges. After several discussions, this traditional school wasopened for girls too.

The Cathedral Undisputed Wonder

No existe una imagen mas representativa de la ciudad que laCatedral. Su imponente fachada no deja de impresionar acordobeses y turistas que la contemplan. Fue merecidamentedeclarada como una de las Maravillas por voto de los cordobesesquienes, gracias a una atinada acción desarrollada por el diario

más importante del interior del país, La Voz del Interior y la Agencia Córdoba Turismo, pusieron a consideración la va-loración del amplio patrimonio histórico cultural de la provincia y muy especial-mente de la ciudad. El edificio actual es

la resultante de un trabajo de más de doscientos años. La primeraiglesia, aunque sin edificio, fue puesta bajo la advocación deNuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia. En el año 1581 secolocaron las estacas del solar con una cruz de madera quesimbolizaba el carácter sagrado del sitio. Muchos años pasaron yla edificación no dejaba de ser una humilde capilla de adobe ymadera. Luego se contrató a un constructor para que procedieraal techado y en el año 1677 la precariedad de la edificaciónquedo puesta de manifiesto porque mientras se desarrollaba lamisa el techo cedió y se produjo un derrumbe con saldo fatal. Apartir de este desgraciado suceso se contrató a un reconocidoarquitecto, González Merguette (Ejecutor de las obras de laCatedral de Chuquisaca). El impulso definitivo lo marcó la llegadaa Córdoba del arquitecto jesuita Andrés Bianchi quien, a lo largode diez años propulsó el crecimiento del templo. A él se debenlas bóvedas, sus naves y su pórtico neoclásico. Quizás el proyectode la cúpula también le perteneció, pero fue finalizada por fraileVicente Muñoz en el año 1752. En 1761 se comienza la torre sury años mas tarde se concluyó con la segunda, las que sin dudason una joya del barroco con la consabida mano indígena quese deja ver en las aristas con la presencia de los ángeles músicos.La iglesia se consagra en el año 1784.

El interior fue ornamentado por el pintor catamarqueñoEmilio Caraffa, quien comenzó las obras en 1908. Caraffaorganizó un destacado equipo de trabajo quienes le imprimieronal interior un brillo casi palaciego que contrasta con la modestiadel exterior. En su atrio descansan los restos de dos celebrescordobeses: A la derecha el general José María Paz, y a laizquierda el Deán Gregorio Funes.

It is the most representative image of the city. Its important facadecontinues delighting not only the local people but also tourists thatcontemplate it.

It was recently declared a wonder. The initiative was organizedthrough a contest about Córdoba Cultural Heritage by the mostimportant newspaper of the interior of the country: La Voz del Interior,together with Agencia Córdoba Turismo.

The building is the result of a hard work that took more than twohundred years. The first church, not being built yet, was placed underthe Protection of Our Señora de la Peña of France. In the year 1581sticks were set with a wood cross that symbolized the sacred characterof the place. Many years passed and the building was just a simplechapel of adobe and wood. Then a builder was hired to make thecovering of the roof but in 1677 the bad conditions of the buildingprovoqued a collapse, while a mass was being celebrated. After thisunfortunate incident a recognized architect was hired: GonzalezMerguette (builder of the Cathedral of Chuquisaca). The end of theconstruction was possible with the arrival of the Jesuit architectAndres Bianchi to Cordoba who finished the church in ten years. Hebuilt the vaults, naves and the neoclassic portico. Maybe he made theproject of the dome but it was finished by Friar Vicente Muñoz in 1752.In 1761 it began the construction of the south tower and years laterthe second one was concluded, both are jewels of the baroque styleand indigenous art influence showing off at the corners of the towerswith features of musician angels. The church was consecrated in1784.

Its interior was decorated by the painter Emilio Caraffa, whostarted in 1908. Caraffa organized an outstanding team work thatgave it a palace style splendor that contrasts with the exterior. In itsatrium conserves the remains of two important men from Cordoba.On the right, the mausoleum of General José Maria Paz and on theleft, the urn of Dean Gregorio Funes.

A fines del siglo XIX Miguel Crisol, un emprendedorporteño, llega a Córdoba y pone especial atención en estosterrenos barrancosos del sur, convencido que el centro dela ciudad estaba ahogado en un hoyo y valiéndose de susimportantes relaciones sociales y políticas dejó traslucir laidea de proyectar la ciudad hacia esa zona, idea queprontamente quedó plasmada, inspirándose en la trazaurbanística del reconocido arquitecto francés Haussmann, quea fines del siglo XVIII transformó la ciudad de Paris en la másmoderna del mundo.

Pronto se convirtió en la mejor opción para las familiasadineradas, quienes se apuraban para conseguir terrenos enla zona, especialmente a lo largo de la diagonal “AvenidaArgentina” hoy Hipólito Irigoyen, construyendo soberbiascasonas en muchos casos copiando modelos europeosdistinguiendo así al famoso “Nueva Córdoba”.

No desentonó la llegada de las hermanas del Buen Pastorcon la instalación de la cárcel de mujeres y su Capilla, porqueel buen gusto y el recato estuvieron siempre presentes.

El siglo XX trajo a los padres Capuchinos quienes edificaronsu templo, luego la arquidiócesis construyó su sede conimponente fachada florentina.

Y hoy pleno siglo XXI la vanguardia y la tecnología tambiénllegaron con colosales obras que dan el toque final para queeste barrio ofrezca todo lo que un visitante merece.

At the end of the 19th century Miguel Crisol, a businessman fromBuenos Aires, arrives to Cordoba and focuses on these southern lands

ofthe city convincedthat the center of the city was in ahole. Through his important social and politicalrelationships, he revealed the idea of designing the city in thatarea, idea that was promptly carried out. It was inspired by the urbandevelopment plan of the recognized French architect Haussman, whoby the end of the 18th century transformed the city of Paris in one ofmost modern of the world.

Soon he became the best option for the rich families, who hurriedto obtain lands in the area, especially along “Argentina Avenue”(today Hipólito Irigoyen Avenue). He built magnificent large housesand in many cases copying european models, thus making thefamous neighbourhood "Nueva Córdoba" distinct.

However, the arrival of the Buen Pastor sisters with the installationof the women’s jail and their nice Chapel did not spoil the gorgeousneighbourhood. The 20th century brought the Capuchin priests whobuilt their church, and then the archdiocese built its headquarterswith a magnificent Florentine facade. And today, at the height of the21st century, vanguard and technology also arrived with colossalworks that give the final touch to make this neighborhood offereverything that a visitor deserves.

1) Patio Olmos Shopping: El edificio perteneció a la EscuelaGobernador Olmos inaugurada en el año 1909. Su esquematipológico se adecuaba a la forma circular de la antigua plaza. En elaño 1992 fue dado en concesión por la Provincia a la empresa PatioOlmos por 35 años.

2) Plazoleta Dalmacio V. Sarsfield: Fue levantada en homenajeal ilustre cordobés, creador del Código Civil Argentino.

3) Edificio Inteligente: Es una obra colosal de fines del siglo XX.Su cuerpo principal es una torre de acero y cristal que emerge deuna antigua fachada cuidadosamente restaurada.

4) Paseo del Buen Pastor: El conjunto está integrado por eledificio recuperado de la antigua cárcel de mujeres y la Capilla delBuen Pastor de alto valor arquitectónico a lo que se incorporó unamplio espacio abierto de recreación y contemplación. Unainmensa fuente con luces y aguas danzantes concentra la atencióna cada hora cuando abre el espectáculo.

5) Iglesia de los Padres Capuchinos: Esta Iglesia fue construidaen el año 1934, por obra del arquitecto italiano Augusto Ferrari,quien colmó de simbolismo a la fachada. Su estilo neogótico.

6) Museo Superior de Bellas Artes Palacio Martín Ferreyra:Construido en el año 1916, perteneció al reconocido médicoempresario Martín Ferreyra. De estilo palaciego fue diseñadasiguiendo planos franceses. Más de 5000 metros cuadrados sepueden recorrer en el hoy Museo Superior de Bellas Artes.

7) Museo de Bellas Artes Emilio Caraffa: Fue diseñado por elarquitecto austro-húngaro Juan Kronfus y tiene un marcado estiloneoclásico.

4) Paseo del Buen Pastor: The place comprises the restored oldwomen’s jail and the Buen Pastor Chapel of high architectural value.There, an open space for recreation and contemplation was added. Abig fountain with lights and dancing waters concentrates the attentioneach hour when the show begins.

Allá por 1862 nace el barrio obrero “Pueblo Nuevo”, primeraextensión urbana fuera del trazado céntrico inicial. A partir dela creación de la plaza de las carretas, hoy Paseo de las Artes, sefue conformando el entorno con habitantes de definido linajecriollo que fueron instalando sus tiendas y almacenes.Despues, gallegos, italianos y árabes se afincaron en estatradicional estampa cordobesa, que contaba con un marcomaravilloso: “La Cañada”. Se trata de un arroyo que durantemuchos siglos fue el terror de los cordobeses, porque cuandocrecía arrasaba; muchos vecinos no solo perdieron sus bienes,sino también sus vidas; y aprovechando este escenario elimaginario popular creo un sinnúmero de personajesfantasmagóricos que aun en la actualidad están en lamemoria. Fueron varios los intentos de encauzar el arroyo,hasta que la sistematización definitiva se llevo a cabo en elaño 1944.

El crecimiento de este barrio se fue dando de manerahomogénea y las viviendas presentaban un aspectoitalianizante que se fue copiando entre los vecinos.

A estas construcciones se sumaron otras en los años 50 quefueron conformando un conjunto urbano definido.

Por estas razones en el año 1997 la Municipalidad deCórdoba concretó el proyecto de revalorización de las fachadas

de estetradicional barrio parareciclar un nuevo y atractivo circuitohistórico.

In 1862 the working-class neighbourhood "Pueblo Nuevo" was born,the first urban extension out of the traditional Spanish outline. Sincethe creation of the wheelbarrow square, today known as "Paseo delas Artes” it was being formed by inhabitants with defined nativelineage. They settled shops and stores. Later Spanish, Italian andArabian people settled in this traditional area of Cordoba, surroundedby the beautiful scenery: “La Cañada”. This stream was, for manycenturies, the terror of Cordoba, because when it burst its banks itdevastated the city. Many neighbours not only lost material thingsbut also their lives. That is why cordobeses’ imaginary createdcountless ghost stories that remain in their minds. There were a lotof attempts to channel the stream; finally the construction was madein the year 1944.

The growth of the neighbourhood was homogeneous and thehouses had an Italian style copied among the neighbours. In the fiftiesother houses were built, forming a defined urban group. For all thesereasons in 1997 the City Hall of Cordoba ordered to paint the façadesof the old houses under a project of reassessment to make of thistraditional neighbourhood a new and attractive historic circuit.

Comenzar por el Calicanto (Calle Belgrano y la Cañada),luego tomar calle Belgrano donde se comenzarán a ver lasfachadas recuperadas:

1) El Calicanto: Resto del antiguo muro de contención de laCañada

2) Capilla de San Francisco Solano: Fue construida en elaño 1917 por la Sociedad Vicentina Conferencia NuestraSeñora de Copacabana. (Belgrano 656).

3) Casa Misión de los Padres Vicentinos: Se inauguró en1913 y albergó a los misioneros (Belgrano 647).

4) Asilo San Francisco Solano: Se habilitó en el año 1914.Hoy la Sociedad San Vicente de Paul. Sigue asistiendo a losancianos en el lugar.

5) El Paseo de las Artes: La antigua Plaza de las Carretas seconvirtió a partir de 1980 en el sitio de los artesanos y de lasmás variadas expresiones culturales. Dentro del prediotambién se encuentra el Museo Iberoamericano de Artesanías.

6) La Casa de Pepino: La hizo construir a comienzos delsiglo XX el italiano José Tucci. Fue una casa-negocio con unasimpática forma de barco, por lo que los vecinos le llamaban elvapor de Pepino. Hoy se convirtió en el Almacén de laMemoria, un espacio cultural que ofrece distintas exposicionestemporales.

6) Pepino’s House: It was built at the beginning 20th century bythe Italian José Tucci. It was a shop with a nice shape of ship, for whichthe neighbours called him the ship of Pepino. Today it became theStore of the Memory, a cultural space that offers different temporaryexhibitions.
