On Friday, 24 May, we hosted the school assembly. We performed two songs by the Tooth Defenders

called My Teeth and Placulus Song. We dressed up as Tooth Defenders, Annalise Walker and

Tanisha Reed wore tooth costumes, Bryke Cook-Vigus played the African drums, and Jordan Hill

    acted the part of Placulus!

In Health this term we have been learning about oral hygiene and wanted to share the Tooth

    Defenders key messages with everyone:

    Bright Smiles Key Messages

Brush with fluoride toothpaste twice a day,

especially after eating breakfast and before bed.

    Floss daily.

Limit the number of times you eat sweet and

    sticky snacks.

    Have a regular dental check-up.

Oral health is an important part of overall health.

We have drawn and painted posters to show what a bright smile means to us. We are entering our

art in the Colgate calendar competition.

We did an experiment with live bacteria and learnt that plaque is always in our mouths, when we

feed it sugar it causes an acid attack on our teeth that lasts 20 minutes, so we need to limit sweet

    snacks.

Remember: replace your toothbrush every 3 months or when it gets shaggy!

In Reading we have been learning about illustrators, the processes artists use to create their work,

how the pictures help tell the story, and we noticed that lots of kids books have dogs!

In Maths we have been using a new program called Stepping Stones, we are using number lines to

    do three digit subtraction.

In Writing we have been creating stories on Storybird. We choose an artist and write a story using

their pictures. You can read our published narratives by searching for Yakamia21 at

    www.storybird.com.

In society and environment we are learning about natural systems on the Great Barrier Reef with

Mrs Link, and researching Canadian animals with Mr Milhomme, when we swap rooms once a week.

Finally we are proud of two speedy students who were presented ribbons for placing in the Cross

Country last week. Congratulations to both our Kates!

    Assembly

Well done to Mrs Link and her Year 3 class on afantastic assembly last Friday. I loved the

    message about brushing your teeth!.

Next Fridays assembly will be hosted by the

students of Room 34. The school looks forward to

    all family and friends attending.

    Uniform

A reminder that our school uniform is green on

the bottom. Black is not a school colour. We

appreciate your support with this matter.

    School Voluntary Contributions

Have you paid your contributions for 2015?

    Schools Voluntary Contributions play an

importance part in funding various resources and

programs around the school to support classes

    with educational projects.

Wed love your support in paying ASAP!

    Raising a Confident Reader

Watching your child become a confident readerand sharing the journey with them is a wonderful

experience. A large part of our everyday life

    depends on reading.

Helping your child to read will open their minds

to a whole range of topics.

There are many ways you can help your child

build their confidence and develop strong reading

skills every day. One of the easiest and most

valuable things you can do at home is to read to

your child and show them how much fun you can

    have when you read.

Discover simple ways to encourage your childs

reading. For more information on how you can

help your child with reading view the resources

on the Schools & You website:

Why is it important to ensure that my child attends school regularly?

Apart from the legal requirement to attend, it is vital that children attend every day for the sake of their future

successes, academically and emotionally as well as in regards to employment choices.

It is very important that parents help children to develop a good attendance career from the very beginning by

ensuring that they attend kindergarten or school whenever possible.

Current research points to a strong link between regular and consistent attendance patterns established in the early

years of schooling and those patterns continuing throughout a students career.

The Telethon Institute for Child Health Research report, Student Attendance and Educational Outcomes; Every Day

Counts on Western Australian students clearly shows that every day counts in terms of a students achievement and

that those students who miss any school have reduced academic outcomes compared with those who attend regularly.

The impact of absence on achievement is greatest for students who are already at educational disadvantage.

Unauthorised absences have a greater negative impact on student achievement than authorised absences.

Being half an hour late to school each day from Year 1 to Year 10 is approximately equivalent to missing one

    year of schooling.

A student who is absent 1 day a fortnight will, by Year 9, have missed 1 year of schooling.

The negative effect of absence on achievement is cumulative over the course of a students attendance career.

A huge thank you to Yakamia students, parents, family members and staff for your

wonderful support at this years Book Fair.

A total of $4500.00 was spent on mainly book purchases resulting in a cash bonus

commission of approximately $800.00 into our library budget.

These extra funds will help with purchases of new early novels for younger readers, student

choices (see form below), science and our animal book collection.

We do welcome your support and hope that whenever you are in the school you will feel freeto visit our fantastic Library Resource Centre.

A huge appreciation for our Book Fair committee and our student helpers, without whose

help and time we would find it difficult to reach such a successful outcome for our Book Fair.

Book Fair Committee: Liz Childs, Sarah Lilleyman and Tanya Sandilands.

Student helpers: Nelson Sim, Kali Haese, Mia Shepherd, Mitchell Killeen, Connor Lazar,

Issac Dodimead-Peake, Sally Thornton, Blake Childs, Chloe Pietrala, Levi York, April Jones-

Thorne and of course the one and only Clifford The Red Dog.

Excitement is brewing in the Kindy/Pre-

Primary area of the school, where a group ofparents and teachers are

    combining forces to enhance

    the existing play area, creating

    a more natural and sensory

    based playground.

    Research suggests that

    children who play in natural

    settings tend to be more

physically active, are sick less often and play

in more diverse, creative and imaginativeways. With this in mind, our group is

    proposing some of the following:

Trees and vegetation to create a more

    calming, natural environment and some

    shade

A stone riverbed, to be used both dry

and wet. Ideal for catching the

rainwater runoff from the roof covering

    the play equipment!

    Wooden log play equipment and

    stepping stones

    A musical garden incorporating a

    hanging xylophone, drums, bamboo etc

A re-vamp of the existing boat with

pulleys, talking tubes and a jetty to help

    initiate more creative play.

This just names a few and although we are

still in the early planning stage, we alreadyhave a number of great ideas emerging.

The next step is to ensure the safety of the

children and that all regulations are met. Todo this we have enlisted the

    services of a professional in

    this area. We consulted with

    James McLean from South

    Pole Structures on Wednesday

    28thMay to discuss our plans.

James will now draw these up,

provide a quote and divide the

    work into manageable stages.

We are appealing to the whole school

community to get behind this project as

ultimately it can only enhance what is

already a great school. Therefore, in the near

future, we will be asking for offers of physical

help and donations of items that can be used

in this area, to help keep the costs down.

For now, a big thank you, thank you, thank

you must go out to the P & C who havealready shown their support of this project.

They have given us a great kick start and the

    money will be wisely spent!

Keep your ears and eyes open for our

progress. Updates will follow and of course

we will be madly fundraising so there will be

lots of opportunities to help out!
