14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest." Is there anyone to whom this

doesn't apply? Don't we all have to labor at something, whether it be work, school, relationships, household affairs, or personal, emotional, or mental battles? Aren't we all burdened in some way at some time? Jesus offers us powerful words of consolation in today's Gospel. He promises us rest. He calls all of us to himself, along with the baggage and burdens that we carry, and assures us that we will find relief. Thank God! What a gift for our tired, weary souls.

The strange part about the passage, however, is when Jesus suggests that in order to find this wonderful rest, we have to take a "yoke" upon our shoulders. This of course is a reference to the animal harness of old that would join two oxen together to share the weight of the load they carried. He tells us, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me... For my yoke is easy, and my burden light." Somehow, joining Jesus in his work is supposed to bring us rest! Contrary to the standard belief that not working is the source of relief, Jesus urges us to join him in his mission in order to find peace. But what is this mission? To be "meek and humble of heart." Jesus' work is to do whatever God the Father wants him to do. As he says elsewhere, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work" (Jn 4:34). So, it seems that if we also humbly submit to doing God's work-with Jesus right alongside us as our partner in the task-we will "find rest" for ourselves. So as we labor through the trials of the day, may we bear this in mind, and pray that we may handle them according to the will of God.

“Vengan a mi, todos los que trabajan y están cansados, y les daré descanso.” ¿Hay alguien a quien

esto no le aplica? ¿No tenemos todos que trabajar en algo, ya sea trabajo, escuela, relaciones, asuntos domésticos, o batallas personales, emocionales, o mentales? ¿No estamos todos cansados de alguna manera en algún momento?

Jesús nos ofrece palabras poderosas de consolación en el Evangelio de hoy. Él nos promete descanso. Nos llama a todos hacia Él, junto al equipaje y cargas que llevamos sobre nuestros hombros, y nos asegura que encontraremos alivio. ¡Gracias a Dios! Que regalos para nuestras almas tan cansadas.

La parte extraña del pasaje, mas sin embargo, es cuando Jesús sugiere que para encontrar este maravilloso descanso, tenemos que tomar un yugo sobre nuestros hombros. Esto, por supuesto, es una referencia al arnés de los animales que une dos bueyes juntos para compartir el peso de la carga que llevan. Él nos dice, “toma mi yugo sobre ti y aprende de mi...Pues mi yugo es fácil, y mi carga es liviana.” ¡De alguna manera, acompañando a Jesús en su trabajo debería traernos descanso! Así que, parece que si nos sometemos humildemente al hacer el trabajo de Dios-con Jesús a nuestro lado como nuestro compañero en el trabajo-nosotros “encontraremos descanso” para nosotros. Así que según trabajamos a través de las tribulaciones del día, podemos tener esto en mente, y rezar que podamos manejarlos según la voluntad de Dios.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS NOTICIAS DEL CATECISMO The Lord's Peace be with you! This Sunday’s readings are very comforting to anyone who-in trying to live their life in accordance with God’s Holy Will-undergo seemingly unending pain and suffering. The fact one experiences such things should not be surprising, given how removed many people in our society are from the things of God. What is truly amazing is just how few people actually give organized religion a chance. They refuse to open their minds and hearts to a new understanding of life, to a higher purpose of existence. As a result they increasingly become less capable of understanding the true beauty and relevance of what God makes known to us through the Holy Spirit. I am convinced that one can only benefit from the wisdom of God by making a daily effort to live a life of humility. That is what I believe the Gospel of Matthew refers to when it indicates “…although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the little ones.” The reward for those who live in this manner is to finally find everlasting rest in the heart of the Lord. ¡La Paz del Señor esté con ustedes! Las lecturas de este domingo resultan reconfortantes para quienes-en su esfuerzo diario por vivir de acuerdo a la Santa Voluntad de Dios-pasan por dolores y sufrimientos que suelen parecer interminables. El hecho de que tenga uno estas experiencias no nos debe sorprender, debido a que tan lejos están muchas personas en nuestra sociedad de las cosas de Dios. Lo que es realmente increíble es el poco número de personas quienes están dispuestos a darle a la religión organizada una oportunidad. La mayoría se rehúsan a abrir su mente y corazón hacia un entendimiento nuevo de la vida, a un propósito mayor de nuestra existencia. Como resultado son cada vez menos capaces de entender la verdadera belleza y relevancia de lo que nos revela por medio del Espíritu Santo. Estoy muy convencido de que es solo por medio del esfuerzo de vivir diariamente la humildad que logra uno beneficiarse de la sabiduría de Dios. Es esto lo que a mi entender nos indica Mateo el Evangelista al decir “…porque has escondido estas cosas a los sabios y entendidos, y las has revelado a la gente sencilla.” El premio para aquellos quienes viven de esta manera es el de finalmente lograr el descansar eternamente en el corazón del Señor. ¡Qué Dios les bendiga! The Women’s Center/ Centro Para La Mujer

At The Women’s Center our counselors treat women who are pregnant and in difficult situations with compassion, friendship and help. Very often they want their baby but are being coerced into aborting it. We receive beautiful “thank you” letters from the Moms who have their babies and we thank you for your help. Are you looking to build your resume, meet new friends, or make a difference for moms and babies? The Women’s Center pregnancy resource center is looking for new volunteers to help Mondays-Fridays at our N. Cicero Ave. location in Chicago. 1) We are looking for a Friday morning Lobby Desk volunteer and also for Lobby Desk substitutes. 2) We need people for various time slots to answer phones in our Administrative Office. 3) We have an opportunity to prepare bottles for our Spare Change Campaigns (great for friends, small groups or service hours!). To get involved, please call our main number 773-794-1313. We need 5 infant car seat/carriers, also 5 large car seats for 20 to 40 lb. children, (all car seats must be less than 7 years old), 7 walkers, 6 high chairs, 2 double strollers, 6 fixed side cribs, 6 umbrella strollers, 4 dressers and 2 swings. It will be a great help if you can deliver these to us. For our address, or if a pick-up by a volunteer is needed, please call 773-794-1313. We also need large and extra large maternity clothes and diapers in sizes 5 and 6 only. These items cannot be picked up unless accompanied by baby furniture. The families who receive these things are grateful for your generosity.

Second Collections in July starting this week

Starting July we will begin to take up second collections twice a month at all the Weekend Masses. In July the collections will take place on the 9th and 23rd. The monies raised will be used to help with the cost of day to day operations, our obligations to the Archdiocese (property and employee health insurance, assessments, etc.) and to support our many programs and ministries.

In order to keep down the cost of envelopes we will not be adding another envelope to our packages to replace the blue stewardship envelope. Instead we are asking that if you want us to record your contributions to the second collections please use an envelope from home and make sure to mark your envelope number on the outside as well. You can also use a personal check on which you can write your envelope number on the memo line.

Our goal is to raise an additional $27,000 a year which averages $1,125 twice a month. Please help us reach our goal. We will keep track of the progress on a month to month basis. We know we can count on you and your generous support.

Segunda Colectas en Julio comenzando esta semana

A partir de julio vamos a empezar a tomar segunda colectas dos veces al mes en todas las Misas del fin de semana. En julio las colectas se tomarán en el 9 y 23 del mes. Se utilizará el dinero recaudado para ayudar con el costo de las operaciones del día a día, nuestras obligaciones con la Arquidiócesis (seguro de propiedad y para la salud de los empleados, tasación, etc.) y para apoyar nuestros programas y ministerios.

Para mantener el costo de los sobres no añadiremos otro sobre a nuestros paquetes para reemplazar el sobre azul de mayordomía. En cambio estamos pidiendo que si desea registrar sus contribuciones a las segunda colectas por favor use un sobre de su casa y asegúrese de marcar su número de sobre en el exterior. También se puede utilizar un cheque personal en la que usted puede escribir su número de sobre en la línea de memo.

Herbert Adelman Children & Youth Grief Retreat – July 22

The Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide (LOSS) program presents the Herbert Adelman Children and Youth Grief Retreat on Saturday, July 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. John of the Cross, 5005 Wolf Road in Western Springs. This special grief retreat is for children ages 4-18 who have lost a loved one to suicide. Whether the child’s loss is recent or not, the retreat provides an opportunity for young grievers to come together and meet others who have experienced a similar tragedy. Children will have the opportunity to share their stories and benefit from various modalities of grief expression including music, crafts, dance-movement, yoga, art and writing. Experienced child therapists will be present to lead all activities. The event is free of charge and will include lunch.
