From the Pastor’s Desk… St. John in today’s gospel remind us that the seed has to be crushed by the weight of the earth, the soil, and it has to die so it can develop and produce fruits. It shouldn’t surprise us that religion has flourished in an amazing way specially in those countries where the Church has been oppressed and crushed by political and economic forces like: Latin America, Poland, Africa, and Asia… It is that very same seed, oppressed that has given us a proliferation of martyrs and saints. So was the case with our Lord Jesus Christ. In order to give us life he gave his. He was raised on the cross, all flesh and all divine, becoming the perfect sacrifice. Christ, in his humanity, died washing away all our sins and renovating the whole creation. He became the Lamb of God, taking away the sin of the world. He became the wheat that will form the bread, the food of angels. He became Eucharist. But Jesus did so after dying to power, popularity and earthly matters. Ultimately he dies as a victim of sin. The sins of humanity and for our own personal sins. He was taken down from the cross, presented to his mother, and even without a proper burial ritual, in haste, he was deposited in a sepulcher. A sepulcher that someone else had paid for. The entrance covered with a stone and the hearts of many covered with sorrow. We are called to be imitators of Jesus Christ. If we wish to give fruit, to be productive, and to be sources of life, we also have to die. We do this in many ways, even without knowing. We die to our own personal liberty as we choose to marry or to profess religious vows and share our journey with a spouse or a community. We die to our prejudice and consumerism as we become aware and active in liberating the poor from their system of alienation and misery. We die to our pride as we ask forgiveness to someone we have hurt. We die to our short temper as we become patient when dealing with a demanding customer, a difficult child or a parent suffering of Alzheimer. And ultimately we die to ourselves as we try to live the Christian way. But these deaths are not painless. Like Jesus they paint to a higher reality. They paint to the hope of a resurrection and eternal life. We become witnesses of the kingdom to come. This is our covenant. That we will love the Lord with all our heart and with all our minds as we also love our neighbor. We wish to form the eternal family in heaven but it has to start here on earth. From that perspective all our sorrows, preoccupations, and human difficulties remain pointing at the cross of Jesus and from there to an empty tomb. And so, we remember Christ’s sacrifice in our celebration. We ask for his sustenance as today we approach the Lord’s table and as pretty soon we shall approach the glory of his resurrection. What can be sweeter than that fresh sugar cane on a sunny afternoon in a tropical island? I’ll tell you what… Jesus Christ resurrected and forever present in his Eucharist.

San Juan en el evangelio de hoy nos recuerda que la semilla debe ser aplastada por el peso de la tierra, el suelo, y debe morir para que pueda desarrollarse y producir frutos. No debería sorprendernos que la religión haya florecido de manera sorprendente especialmente en aquellos países donde la Iglesia ha sido oprimida y aplastada por fuerzas políticas y económicas como: América Latina, Polonia, África y Asia ... Es esa misma semilla, oprimida que nos ha dado una proliferación de mártires y santos. Así fue el caso con nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

Para darnos vida, él dio la suya. Él fue levantado en la cruz, todo carne y todo divino, convirtiéndose en el sacrificio perfecto. Cristo, en su humanidad, murió lavando todos nuestros pecados y renovando toda la creación. Se convirtió en el Cordero de Dios, eliminando el pecado del mundo. Él se convirtió en el trigo que formara el pan, alimento de los ángeles. Él se convirtió en Eucaristía. Pero Jesús lo hizo después de morir al poder, o la popularidad y o los asuntos terrenales. Ultimadamente él muere como víctima del pecado. Los pecados de la humanidad y nuestros pecados personales. Fue bajado de la cruz, presentado a su madre, e incluso sin un ritual funerario adecuado, a toda prisa, fue depositado en un sepulcro. Un sepulcro que alguien más había pagado. La entrada fue cubierta con una piedra y los corazones de muchos se cubrieron con tristeza. Estamos llamados a ser imitadores de Jesucristo. Si deseamos dar fruto, ser productivos y ser fuentes de vida, también debemos morir. Hacemos esto de muchas maneras, incluso sin saber. Morimos a nuestra propia libertad personal cuando elegimos casarnos o profesar votos religiosos y compartir nuestro viaje con un cónyuge o una comunidad. Morimos a nuestro prejuicio y consumismo a medida que tomamos conciencia y actuamos para liberar a los pobres de su sistema de enajenación y miseria. Morimos por nuestro orgullo mientras pedimos perdón a alguien que hemos lastimado. Morimos a nuestro mal genio a medida que nos volvemos pacientes al tratar con un cliente exigente, un niño difícil o un padre que sufre de Alzheimer. Y finalmente morimos a nosotros mismos mientras tratamos de vivir el camino cristiano. Pero estas muertes no son sin dolor. Como Jesús, ellas pintan una realidad más elevada. Pintan la esperanza de una resurrección y de una vida eterna. Nos convertimos en testigos del reino por venir. Este es nuestro pacto. Que amaremos al Señor con todo nuestro corazón y con todas nuestras mentes, así como también amamos a nuestro prójimo. Deseamos formar la familia eterna en el cielo, pero tiene que comenzar aquí en la tierra. Desde esa perspectiva, todas nuestras penas, preocupaciones y dificultades humanas siguen apuntando a la cruz de Jesús y de allí a una tumba vacía. Y así, recordamos el sacrificio de Cristo en nuestra celebración. Pedimos su sustento al acercamos a la mesa del Señor y al saber que muy pronto nos acercaremos a la gloria de su resurrección. ¿Qué puede ser más dulce que la caña de azúcar fresca en una tarde soleada en una isla tropical? Te diré qué ... Jesucristo resucitado y presente para siempre en su Eucaristía.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS NOTICIAS DEL CATECISMO The Lord's Peace be with you!

We reached the halfway mark of this penitential season of Lent last week Thursday. The readings from this Fifth Sunday of Lent reveal that Christ is well on his way toward completing his mission in Jerusalem, and we are accompanying him on the journey. As we do so, it is very important that our focus remain placed on him. The Evil One is always seeking to disrupt, divide, and discourage us from remaining with the Lord and learning from him the ways of merciful love and peace. Ironically, this period which is meant to be a time of soul searching can easily become one of tension and frustration. Our schedules don’t let up, and we find ourselves struggling to carve out small opportunities for quiet reflection. This weekend is a particularly busy one for the parish’s religious education programs. But in this case, we will busy ourselves with learning to remain close to the Lord. Our First Communion candidates and their parents will be interviewed by Father Claudio on Saturday. That day is also the setup for Sunday’s Vicariate III Spirit Day Confirmation Retreat which will be taking place in the Desmond Gym. A closing Mass celebrated by Bishop Alberto Rojas and concelebrated by Father Claudio will take place after the conclusion of the retreat, in which the third and final Scrutiny takes place for our RCIC candidates. They will also be participating in the retreat, along with the Confirmation candidates of CCD programs from six different parishes including our own. This weekend offers us a wonderful example of how to defeat the powers of sin and darkness by coming together in the power of the Holy Spirit to love and serve our Lord Jesus Christ.

¡La Paz del Señor esté con ustedes!

El pasado jueves marcamos el punto medio de este tiempo penitencial de Cuaresma. Las lecturas para este Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma nos revelan como Cristo marcha en camino hacia el cumplimiento de su misión en Jerusalén, y nosotros lo acompañamos en su jornada. Al hacerlo, es muy importante que nos mantengamos enfocados en él. El Malvado busca siempre interrumpir, dividir, y desalentarnos de permanecer con el Señor, quien desea enseñarnos sobre el amor misericordioso y la paz. Irónicamente, este periodo la cual se supone que sea sobre crecimiento del alma puede a veces tornarse uno de tensión y frustración. Nuestros itinerarios no ceden, y luchamos por lograr obtener un tiempo mínimo para reflexionar en silencio. Este fin de semana es uno particularmente ocupado para los programas de educación religioso de la parroquia, pero en nuestro caso, estaremos ocupados aprendiendo como seguir de cerca al Señor. El sábado nuestros candidatos de Primera Comunión y sus padres serán entrevistados por el Padre Claudio. Esa tarde es la preparación para el Retiro de Confirmación “Spirit Day” del Vicariato III, la cual tendrá lugar domingo en el Gimnasio Desmond del Centro Monseñor Thiele. El Obispo Alberto Rojas celebrará y el Padre Claudio concelebrará una Misa de clausura, en donde se llevará a cabo el Tercer Escrutinio para nuestros candidatos jóvenes del programa RICA. Ellos también van a participar en el retiro, junto a candidatos a la Confirmación de seis parroquias incluyendo la nuestra. Este fin de semana nos ofrece un ejemplo maravilloso de cómo poder derrotar el poder del mal, unidos bajo el poder del Espíritu Santo amando y sirviendo a nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

Tenebrae Service: Tuesday, March 27 The purpose of this service was to remember the somber events that occurred in Jesus' life from the exuberant entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday through the night of Jesus' burial on Good Friday. Communion is often included in a Tenebrae service, as well. The most distinctive aspect of the service is the use of a Tenebrae "hearse," a holder for several lit candles. The flames of these candles are extinguished one by one as Scripture readings are shared to tell the story of Holy Week. This gradual descent into gloom is a representation of Jesus' increasing sorrow as the events of Passion Week unfolded. After the last verse is read, the last candle is put out, and the room is plunged into darkness. Please join us!

Servicio de Tinieblas: Martes, 27 de Marzo El propósito de este servicio era recordar los sombríos acontecimientos que ocurrieron en la vida de Jesús desde la exuberante entrada en Jerusalén el Domingo de Ramos hasta la noche del entierro de Jesús el Viernes Santo. La Comunión también es incluida a menudo en un servicio de Tinieblas. El aspecto más distintivo del servicio es el uso de un oficio de tinieblas "tenebrario," un candelabro especial que tiene muchas velas encendidas. The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets every Wednesday in the Thiele Center from 10am to noon. This group knits and crochets prayer shawls while praying individually and as a group for the recipient of each

shawl. These shawls represent a visible symbol of our prayers and presence. Shawls have been given to those facing challenging times, illness or to celebrate a special moment to bring the comfort and warmth of God’s love and healing. El Ministerio Mantas de Oración se reúne todos los miércoles en el Centro Pastoral de 10am a medio día. Este grupo hace mantas de oración hechos de tejido o de ganchillo mientras rezan individualmente y como grupo para que el receptor de cada manta. Estas mantas representan un símbolo visible de nuestras oraciones y presencia. Las mantas se han dado a aquellos que enfrentan tiempos difíciles, enfermedad o para celebrar un momento especial para llevar el apoyo y la calidez del amor de Dios y la sanación.
