From the Pastor’s Desk… To comprehend and accept the gift of working for the kingdom of God is the main concern of today’s gospel. We are immersed in a world where “time is money” therefore very important. We are living an age of instant gratification, of the search for control, of measurable achievement, and pragmatic solutions. Our measure for success is not stability, whether personal or family wise, or even security. Our society’s measure for success is money and power. A Spanish saying puts this in perspective, “By the tip dances the monkey” or as we may say, “money talks”. The gospel uses images of the great treasure and the pearl, material and worldly valuables, to point to the real treasure. It is an invitation to put as an absolute priority the treasure of treasures, our faith. For a Christian this is the main interest and chief concern in life. At the end of the day when we face our creator in our daily inventory what we have in our hands in the accomplishments of the day as we have responded in light of our faith. This treasure can be found in the most ordinary of places. This treasure, this response, is found in the daily routines of our lives. This great pearl is hidden in the creases of what is ordinary. God is constantly speaking to us, sending us circumstances, signs, and messages in the bits and pieces of our everyday happenings. For example it is found in the way we treat our spouse, in that little bunch of daisies you brought to her just because or in remembering what his favorite meal is and preparing it just because… This treasure is found in the first words of your child, when he can barely mumble “mama”. This treasure exists when we support a friend through a difficult divorce or when we support a neighbor who has lost a beloved one. This treasure exists! But how can we see it? How can we find it? This is when our response steps in. We respond because we see it. We see it because we respond to God’s call of contributing with His kingdom here on earth. That’s where the treasure is! If we can understand what the kingdom of God asks from us, we would not even hesitate when responding to its call for service. To be a disciple means to imitate Jesus. It is our faith in Christ what will allow us to sell everything we have, purchase the great pearl, and discover the true treasure. Whereas as the Pope giving up his life for others or a mother giving up her life for her children we can see because we have believed and we have responded. Our great destiny is discovering our true wealth on earth and sharing God’s glory in the heavenly kingdom.

Del Escritorio del Párroco… El entender y el aceptar el don del trabajo por el reino de Dios es la preocupación principal del evangelio de este domingo. Estamos inmersos en un mundo donde “el tiempo es oro” por lo tanto es muy importante. Vivimos en una era de gratificación instantánea, de búsqueda de control, de logros mesurables y soluciones pragmáticas. Nuestro éxito no se mide por nuestra estabilidad, ya sea personal o familiar, ni siquiera por nuestra seguridad. Nuestra sociedad se mide por el éxito a través del dinero y del poder. En español decimos,

“Por el dinero baila el mono” o como decimos en inglés, “el dinero habla”. El evangelio utiliza las imágenes del gran tesoro y de la perla, valores materiales del mundo, para señalar al verdadero tesoro. Es una invitación para colocar como absoluta prioridad el tesoro de los tesoros, nuestra fe. Para un Cristiano este es el mayor interés y la preocupación principal en nuestra vida. Al final de los tiempos vamos a encarar a nuestro creador quien hará un inventario de lo que nuestras manos han logrado y de cómo hemos respondido a la luz de nuestra fe. Este tesoro se puede encontrar en lugares ordinarios. Este tesoro, esta respuesta, se encuentra en la rutina diaria de nuestras vidas. Esta gran perla está escondida en lo que resulta cotidiano. Dios constantemente nos habla, enviándonos circunstancias, signos, y mensajes a lo largo de nuestro diario vivir. Por ejemplo este tesoro se encuentra en la manera en la que tratamos al cónyuge, en ese manojo de margaritas que le traemos a la esposa o en el preparar el plato preferido del esposo… Este tesoro se encuentra en las primeras palabras de tu Hijo, cuando él apenas puede decir “mamá”. Este tesoro existe cuando apoyamos a un amigo a través de un divorcio difícil o cuando apoyamos a un vecino. ¡Este tesoro existe! ¿Pero cómo lo podemos ver? ¿Pero cómo lo podemos encontrar? He aquí cuando nuestra respuesta nos permite verlo y encontrarlo. Respondemos a este tesoro cuando lo vemos. Vemos este tesoro porque respondemos al llamado de Dios a contribuir en Su reino aquí en la tierra. ¡Es ahí donde está el tesoro! Si podemos entender lo que el reino de Dios nos pide, no titubearemos en responder a manera de servicio a los demás. El ser un discípulo implica el imitar a Jesús. Es nuestra fe en Cristo la que nos permitirá el vender todo lo que tengamos, comprar la gran perla y descubrir el tesoro verdadero. Luego entonces, ya sea el Papa visitando varios países o una madre dando su vida por sus hijos, vemos que ellos han descubierto el tesoro porque han creído y han respondido. Nuestro gran destino es descubrir nuestra verdadera riqueza en la tierra y así compartir la gloria de Dios en la patria celestial.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS NOTICIAS DEL CATECISMO The Lord's Peace be with you! One manner in which the Word of God is exceedingly rich is in its universality. What I mean by this is that, regardless of where one is at in life, a particular Scripture Verse can “speak” to the deepest part of that person’s particular situation. This Sunday’s readings once again are aimed at focusing our attention toward what is fundamentally important and worthy-the “Great Transcendentals”-to use a more philosophical term. Our God is so far greater than our capacity as humans to understand. Although created in God’s image, we can at best only guess about the reality that is God. It is therefore appropriate for us to approach God with an attitude of reverence and humble obedience. King Solomon did so in our first reading. When God gave him the opportunity to ask for something, he spoke as the Lord’s servant and with great respect proceeded to ask the Lord for understanding. God was pleased with this request and blessed Solomon with great wisdom. In our Gospel from Matthew, Jesus uses three parables to instruct his disciples about the Kingdom. The common thread in these parables is the seemingly impractical behavior from a worldly standpoint of those having made an extremely valuable discovery. Our response to God’s abundant graces should mimic those of the person in the field, the merchant, and King Solomon: one of total and absolute abandonment to our Lord and our God. ¡La Paz del Señor esté con ustedes! Una manera en la que la Palabra de Dios es sumamente rica es en su universalidad. Lo que quiero decir con esto es que, independientemente de donde se encuentre uno en la vida, un versículo en particular de la Escritura le puede "hablar" a lo más profundo de la situación particular de esa persona. Las lecturas de este domingo una vez más pretenden centrar nuestra atención hacia lo que es fundamentalmente importante y digno-los "Grandes Trascendentales"-por usar un término más filosófico. Nuestro Dios es inmensamente mayor que nuestra capacidad como seres humanos de comprender. Aunque somos creados a la imagen de Dios, somos solo capaces de-en mejor instancia-hacer conjetura acerca de la realidad que es Dios. Por lo tanto es conveniente acercarse uno a Dios con actitud de reverencia y obediencia humilde. Esto lo hizo el Rey Salomón en la Primera Lectura. Cuando Dios le otorgó la oportunidad de pedirle algo, él le habló como siervo al Señor y con gran respeto procedió a pedirle más entendimiento. Dios estuvo satisfecho con esta petición y bendijo a Salomón con gran sabiduría. En el Evangelio de Mateo, Jesús utiliza tres parábolas para instruir a sus discípulos acerca del Reino. El hilo conductor de estas parábolas es el comportamiento aparentemente impráctico desde un punto de vista mundano por parte de quienes han descubierto algo muy valioso. Nuestra respuesta a la gracia abundante de Dios debe imitar a los de la persona en el campo, el comerciante y el Rey Salomón: uno de abandono total y absoluto a nuestro Señor y nuestro Dios. ¡Qué Dios les bendiga! Sharing Parish Picnic with St Hubert Parish....

Saturday, August 12 at St Hubert Parish in Hoffman Estates. We are offering bus transportation. The bus will leave on that day from St. Al’s at 10am and return at approx. 5:30pm. Registration for bus will take place on August 6 after each Mass in the back of the Church. You may also register at the Rectory Mondays/Tuesdays 8:30am-4:30pm and Thursdays 1pm-4pm. We are asking that you bring a potluck dish to share. Cost of Bus: Family:$10.00 Senior Citizens/Single:$5.00 Please make plans to join us in this wonderful opportunity to come together as one family in Christ.

Sábado, 12 de agosto en la Parroquia de San Huberto en Hoffman Estates. Estamos ofreciendo transportación por autobús. El autobús sale desde San Luis Gonzaga ese día a las 10am y regresará aproximadamente a las 5:30pm. Registración para el autobús se tomará lugar el 6 de agosto después de cada Misa detrás de la iglesia. Puede también registrarse en la oficina de la parroquia los Lunes/Martes de 8:30am-4:30pm, y los Jueves de 1pm-4pm. Estamos pidiendo que traigan un plato de su comida favorita para compartir.

Free Community Health Fair – August 12

Catholic Charities is hosting a free community health fair on Saturday, August 12, at St. Gall Parish, 5500 S. Kedzie Ave. in Chicago. The health fair offers free medical screenings and physical exams for adults and children. There will also be free back to school physicals for children. Registration for all participants runs from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at each location. All health fairs run from 9 a.m. to noon. There is no co-payment and identification is not required to receive services. All of the screenings are done by medical professional volunteers, many of whom are bilingual. Second Collections in August In August the collections will take place on the 6th and 20th. The monies raised will be used to help with the cost of day to day operations, our obligations to the Archdiocese (property and employee health insurance, assessments, etc.) and to support our many programs and ministries. In order to keep down the cost of envelopes we will not be adding another envelope to our packages to replace the blue stewardship envelope. Instead we are asking that if you want us to record your contributions to the second collections please use an envelope from home and make sure to mark your envelope number on the outside as well. You can also use a personal check on which you can write your envelope number on the memo line. Our goal is to raise an additional $27,000 a year which averages $1,125 twice a month. Please help us reach our goal. We will keep track of the progress on a month to month basis. We know we can count on you and your generous support.
