SECOND COLLECTION Next week’s second collection is taken in support of the Little Sisters of the Poor. The Little Sisters of the Poor are an international congregation of Roman Catholic women religious founded in 1839 by Saint Jeanne Jugan. Together with a diverse network of collaborators, we serve the elderly poor in over 30 countries around the world. Continuing the work of Saint Jeanne Jugan, our Mission is to offer the neediest elderly of every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed as Christ, cared for as family and accompanied with dignity until God calls them to himself. Our Vision is to contribute to the Culture of Life by nurturing communities where each person is valued, the solidarity of the human family and the wisdom of age are celebrated, and the compassionate love of Christ is shared with all. La Palabra en Nuestra Vidas 7 de Octubre 2018

XXVII Domingo Ordinario

The Word in Our Lives Readings for October 7, 2018 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Genesis 2:18-24 The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him." So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man. So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: "This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called 'woman, ' for out of 'her man' this one has been taken." That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 128:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6

Second Reading: Hebrews 2:9-11 Brothers and sisters: He "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels, " that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering. He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them “brothers.”

Gospel: Mark 10:2-16 The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."

Stewardship

Dear Fellow Parishioners, Last week’s offertory collection was $15,224. The collection for Oblate Missions was $4,317.50. Thank you for your continued faithful stewardship. We are pleased to present a copy of the annual parish financial report for fiscal year ended 6/30/2018. As in year’s past, our efforts have remained focused on being transparent, working hard to reduce our debt position, and strengthen our savings. Financial Highlights include the following:

Maintained the offertory and debt reduction payment contribution levels thanks to the support of our parishioners’ ongoing commitment to our parish well-being; Specifically, we achieved further debt reduction by $257,661; We’ve made the capital improvements that include a well-needed new roof on Parish Hall and parking lot repair and sealing using funds from the Sustaining Hope for the Future campaign; Other Sustaining Hope campaign funds were put towards the Music Ministry Office for the planned music room, construction/ retrofitting of handicap accessible bathrooms in St. Rose, and the replacement of a Church Hall classroom heater; As you will see in the financial summary provided, we continue to bolster our savings and investments by placing them in low risk and liquid Certificates of Deposit and Money Market accounts to gain some marginal return while not taking on incremental financial risk; We remain on track to pay off the mortgage for St. Joseph’s Church ahead of schedule (target 2021) without requiring incremental funding of any “balloon” balance; We continue to manage to budget without compromise to our ministries; Achieved another excellent year in net proceeds from our Annual Parish Carnival

We would also like to use this opportunity to provide context to our financial position. Particularly, we realize many continue to hear about our debt reduction and we are grateful for the continued support of the related offertory. As reported in years past, much of our debt position over the past decade was in support of construction of St. Joseph’s Church, however some of you may recall that back in 2009 we pulled funds from our parish reserve accounts to purchase the organ at St. Rose as well as address the desperately needed repairs for the St. Rose steeple, among other things. At that time, we were dismayed to learn that the damage at St. Rose was far worse than expected and if not immediately addressed, the Church building (nearly 150 years old), was at risk of being temporarily shuttered until fixed for safety reasons. It is rewarding to see years later that our parish physical structures and community remain vibrant, made possible only by the strength of our parishioner stewardship. Other Highlights:

Special Collections Bishop’s Annual Appeal-This year the goal for St. Joseph Parish was $113,000. Total pledged came to $145,429, with 19% of those registered participating. Diocesan Collections-Throughout the year, St. Joseph Parish had twelve extra collections that go directly to the Diocese to help fund not only local but worldwide appeals; this past year that amounted to $31,976, a strong and generous contribution for our parish.

Poor Box Donations- The poor box at St. Joseph church collected $13,234, which went to St. Vincent de Paul Society to help those less fortunate in the area. At St. Rose those funds collected amounted to $1,443, which went to Chesapeake City Ecumenical Association to help those in that community. Parish Advisory Committee on Outreach (PACO)- Several years ago, by suggestion of Deacon Fred Wendt, the church made a commitment to enhance our contributions to charitable works that are performed by other non-profit organizations, mostly in our community, but also nationally. As we continue that commitment, the Parish donated $6,000 last year and continues in this worthy cause. Beyond the financials, we shared in many celebrations and special events last year. Highlights include: Welcoming We welcomed 143 new families to our parish last year, for a total of 3020 registered households in our parish.

Please be sure to visit and check out those businesses who advertise in our bulletin. Your support of these sponsors is one way to say thank you for their generosity.

REDNER’S RECEIPTS The CCEA collects Redner’s receipts. Receipts can be put in the collection basket or dropped off at the church or CCEA office. Please submit the whole receipt as partial receipts will not be considered. Refunds from the Redner receipts covers the expenditure for meats purchased by the food pantry staff for our clients. Thank you for your assistance, it is appreciated.

PAT’S PIZZA Pat’s Pizza Family Restaurant, located at 311 N. Broad Street in Middletown, will donate a portion of all receipts we return to them. Please place your saved receipts in the collection basket or drop them off at the parish office. We are blessed that our local businesses continue to support our parish. Please thank them for their generosity when you visit Pat’s.

Sacraments We celebrated 60 baptisms during the past year: 42 infants, 14 children and youth, and 4 adults. We had 92 students who celebrated confirmation. There were 4 people who were welcomed into the Catholic Church through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). About 225 people attended our communal penance services. About 13 people celebrated the Sacrament of the Sick (anointing) either individually. There were 13 couples who were married at our parish. There were 35 funerals that were celebrated during the year. Religious Education There were 554 students enrolled in our parish religious education program, from 1st through 8th grade, and 84 students celebrated First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Additionally, several adult religious education sessions were offered, covering such subjects as the liturgy and sacraments. Liturgy Many people were involved in all aspects of our liturgical ministries: Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, lectors, servers, ushers, greeters, cantors, choir and accompanists. Along with our clergy they make our liturgies meaningful and spiritual. There are several other noteworthy points, and as always, too many to list here. That is, the vitality and growth of our faith community is demonstrated not only by our solid financial position, but also through the countless hours of volunteerism in our parish, showing that our parishioners take seriously the need to give of themselves to continue Christ’s redemptive work by giving of time, talent, and treasure. The Finance Council aims to repeat last year’s performance as good stewards and members of Christ’s Church. Thank you for your commitment to our parish and Christ’s mission, and may God continue to bestow His blessings upon you and your loved ones. We are humbled to serve on the parish finance council, and we hope that you will see our continued efforts to be faithful stewards of the goods entrusted to our parish.

SHARE IN THE SPIRIT Thanks to everyone who contributed to the diocesan Share in the Spirit tuition assistance collection last week. For those of you who were unable to participate last weekend, you may still contribute to the Share in the Spirit collection for tuition assistance. Please drop your envelope in the collection basket or at the parish office. If you have misplaced your envelope, extras can be found at the rear of the church. This important collection supports the mission and ministry of our Catholic schools by assisting parents who seek a Catholic education for their children but who struggle to afford the full cost of tuition. Your support is gratefully appreciated.

BAPTISM PREP

It is always an exciting time when a family is anticipating the birth of a child, not only for the family but for our parish community as well. There are so many things to think about and prepare for during the months prior to the arrival of your child. One of those things might be the Baptism. Parents are required to attend a two-part Baptism PREP program. We have found that it is easier for the parents if they do this during the second trimester of the pregnancy. We offer our Baptism PREP classes every other month, the next classes will be in October. Classes will be held on the first and third Saturdays at 10:30 AM, October 6 & 20. Registration in the parish is required prior to scheduling Baptism PREP. It is necessary to call the parish office, 302-378-5800, to register for the classes. Please note that Baptism dates will not be confirmed until classes are completed and all information for your sponsors has been received by the parish office. Godparents and/or Sponsors for Confirmation must meet the requirements of Canon Law. The person who will fulfill one of these important roles must: ·Be at least sixteen years of age; · Have celebrated all three Sacraments of Initiation

(Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist); ·Be living a life in harmony with the teaching of the

Church It is the third requirement that most often causes difficulty. It is generally interpreted to mean that a person is registered in a parish and, if married is in a valid marriage. This means that the marriage must have taken place in the Catholic Church or, if celebrated in the church of another denomination the couple must have received permission of the Catholic Church for this to take place. This generally occurs when in the celebration of marriage between a Catholic and a non-Catholic Christian the church of the non-Catholic holds particular significance for the non-Catholic party. In such a case the bishop is asked to grant a dispensation so that the wedding may be considered valid by the Catholic Church. For those who were not married in the Catholic Church and are free to do so (meaning no prior marriages requiring an annulment) they may ask to have a “convalidation” of their marriage. This is generally referred to by most as “having their marriage blessed.” It is worth noting that divorce in and of itself does not make one ineligible to serve as a godparent or sponsor (nor does it exclude one from receiving the Eucharist). The difficulty arises when there is a subsequent marriage without seeking an annulment of one’s previous bond of marriage.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS

Our prayers are being answered each day, as people continue to come forward asking questions about how they can join the church. RCIA is a great way for us to reach out to individuals and families, and encourage them to ask questions and learn more about our faith. Our faith in God informs our hearts. Our trust in God leads us through difficulty. Our love for God’s holy people inspires each of us by the Holy Spirit to invite people to come and see how to join us and receive Christ our Lord in Holy Eucharist. We are a loving, caring, praying and life giving community guided by these values and bonded together by our Lord Jesus Christ. So, go out and see if the people you live with, work with, laugh with and pray with – want to join us.

ELKTON COMMUNITY KITCHEN Our next date to serve at the Elkton Community Kitchen is Friday October 12, 2018. We are planning a menu of Chili, White Rice, Rolls with Butter, Fresh Tossed Salad with Dressing, Fresh Fruit, & Desserts. We are in need of volunteers for the month of October. Please let Linda Ziegler know if you are able to give about 3 hours of your time on October 12 or are able to donate for the menu. You may respond to 908-216-4224 or [email protected]. A most gracious thank you to all our volunteers that are willing to share your time and food donations. Your efforts and generosity are appreciated by the participants served at the Community Kitchen.
