Lord Jesus CHRIST, great High Priest,

I pray that you protect and watch over all our

seminarians, especially Joshua Falce and

William Lane. Grant them the grace to follow

you faithfully and to generously and joyfully

serve your people. Kindle fire in their hearts

for evangelization, and total openness to your

Holy Spirit. May they hunger to be in your

Eucharistic presence.

Are you interested in receiving the SACRAMENT OF

CONFIRMATION? Sacred Heart Parish will be offering a

Spanish Confirmation class for adults (21 or older) who

would like to be confirmed.

If interested, please call or stop by the Parish Office to

register.

Classes will begin the first week of February.

Requirements:

* Bring a copy of your baptismal certificate

* Be at least 21 years old

* Practicing the Catholic Faith

Beloved Brothers and Sisters,

The Sunday within the Octave of Christmas, that is, the present Sunday, unites, in the liturgy, the solemn memory of the Holy Family of

Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The birth of a child always gives rise to a family. The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem gave rise to this unique and

exceptional Family in the history of mankind. In this Family there came into the world, grew and was brought up the Son of God, con-

ceived and born of the Virgin-Mother, and at the same time entrusted, from the beginning, to the truly fatherly care of Joseph. The latter,

a carpenter of Nazareth, who vis-à-vis Jewish law was Mary's husband, and vis-à-vis the Holy Spirit was her worthy spouse and the

guardian, really in a fatherly way, of the maternal mystery of his Bride.

The family of Nazareth, which the Church, especially in today's liturgy, puts before the eyes of all families, really constitutes that culmi-

nating point of reference for the holiness of every human family. The history of this Family is described very concisely in the pages of

the Gospel. We get to know only a few events in its life. However what we learn is sufficient to be able to involve the fundamental mo-

ments in the life of every family, and to show that dimension, to which all men who live a family life are called: fathers, mothers, par-

ents, and children.

The Gospel shows us, very clearly, the educative aspect of the family. "He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedi-

ent to them" (Lk 2:51).

This submission, obedience, readiness to accept the mature examples of the human conduct of the family, is necessary, on the part of

children and of the young generation. Jesus, too, was "obedient" in this way. And parents must measure their whole conduct with this

"obedience", this readiness of the child to accept the examples of human behavior. This is the particularly delicate point of their respon-

sibility as parents, of their responsibility with regard to the man, this little and then growing man entrusted to them by God himself.

They must also keep in mind everything that happened in the life of the Family of Nazareth when Jesus was twelve years old; that is,

they bring up their child not just for themselves, but for him, for the tasks which he will have to assume later. The twelve-year-old Jesus

replied to Mary and Joseph: "Did you not know that I must be about my Father's business?" (Lk 2:40).

The deepest human problems are connected with the family. It constitutes the primary, fundamental and irreplaceable community for

man. "The mission of being the primary vital cell of society has been given to the family by God himself", the Second Vatican Council

affirms. (Apostolicam Actuositatem, 11).

The Church wishes to bear a particular witness to that too during the Octave of Christmas, by means of the feast of the Holy Family. She

wishes to recall that the fundamental values, which cannot be violated without incalculable harm of a moral nature, are bound up with

the family.

What are these values? The first of them is the value of the person which is expressed in absolute mutual faithfulness until death: the

faithfulness of the husband to his wife and of the wife to her husband. The consequence of this affirmation of the value of the person,

which is expressed in the mutual relationship between husband and wife, must also be respect for the personal value of the new life, that

HOMILÍA DE SU SANTIDAD JUAN PABLO II. Domingo 31 de diciembre de 1978

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

El domingo dentro de la octava de Navidad, es decir, el domingo presente, une, en la liturgia, el recuerdo solemne de la Sagrada Familia

de Jesús, María y José. El nacimiento de un hijo siempre da lugar a una familia. El nacimiento de Jesús en Belén dio origen a esta Familia

única y excepcional en la historia de la humanidad. En esta Familia vino al mundo, creció y fue criado como el Hijo de Dios, concebido y

nacido de la Virgen Madre, y al mismo tiempo confiado, desde el principio, al cuidado verdaderamente paternal de José. Esta última, el

carpintero de Nazaret, quien ante la ley judía era el esposo de María, y ante el Espíritu Santo era su digna esposa y guardián.

La familia de Nazaret, que la Iglesia, especialmente en la liturgia de hoy, pone ante los ojos de todas las familias, constituye realmente ese

punto de referencia culminante para la santidad de toda familia humana. La historia de esta familia se describe de manera muy concisa en

las páginas del Evangelio. Conocemos solo unos pocos eventos en su vida. Sin embargo, lo que aprendemos es suficiente para poder invo-

lucrar los momentos fundamentales en la vida de cada familia y mostrar esa dimensión, a la que le llaman todos los hombres que viven

una vida familiar: padres, madres, padres e hijos.

El Evangelio nos muestra, muy claramente, el aspecto educativo de la familia. "Bajó con ellos y vino a Nazaret, y los obedeció" (Lc 2:51).

Esta sumisión, obediencia, disposición para aceptar los ejemplos maduros de la conducta humana de la familia, es necesaria por parte de

los niños y de la generación joven. Jesús también fue "obediente" de esta manera. Y los padres deben medir toda su conducta con esta

"obediencia", esta disposición del niño a aceptar los ejemplos de comportamiento humano. Este es el punto particularmente delicado de su

responsabilidad como padres, de su responsabilidad con respecto al hombre, este pequeño y creciente hombre que Dios mismo les confió.

También deben tener en cuenta todo lo que sucedió en la vida de la Familia de Nazaret cuando Jesús tenía doce años; es decir, crían a su

hijo no solo para ellos, sino para él, para las tareas que tendrá que asumir más adelante. Jesús, de doce años, respondió a María y José:

"¿No sabías que debo ocuparme de los asuntos de mi Padre?" (Lc 2:40).

Los problemas humanos más profundos están relacionados con la familia, quien constituye la comunidad primaria, fundamental e irrem-

plazable para el hombre. "La misión de ser la célula vital primaria de la sociedad ha sido dada a la familia por Dios mismo", afirma el

Concilio Vaticano II. (Apostolicam Actuositatem, 11).

La Iglesia desea dar un testimonio particular de eso también durante la Octava de Navidad, por medio de la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia.

Ella desea recordar que los valores fundamentales, que no pueden ser violados sin un daño incalculable de naturaleza moral, están vincu-

lados con la familia.

¿Cuáles son estos valores? El primero de ellos es el valor de la persona que se expresa en absoluta fidelidad mutua hasta la muerte: la fi-

delidad del esposo a su esposa y de la esposa a su esposo. La consecuencia de esta afirmación del valor de la persona, que se expresa en la

relación mutua entre marido y mujer, también debe ser el respeto por el valor personal de la nueva vida, es decir, del hijo, desde el primer

momento de su concepción.
