El arrepentimien- to es algo que debemos hacer al menos una vez al día, si no más a menudo. Al final de cada día, debes tomarte unos minutos para reflexionar sobre tu día y buscar los momentos en que te alejaste de Dios. Hágase algunas preguntas: ¿Cómo he tratado a quienes me rodean hoy? Jesus refers to him as Elijah – regarded as the greatest prophet in the Old Testament. In the second reading today Paul says, “John heralded his coming by a baptism of repent- ance.” This repentance was in preparation for meeting Je- sus. As we look at this sequence – repentance and then meet- ing Jesus, we see this is how it should be in our own lives. Every time we come to meet Jesus we should re- pent. Repentance is not just something we do when we go to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. Repentance is some- thing we must do at least once a day, if not more often. At the end of every day you should take a few minutes to reflect on your day and look for the times when you turned away from God. Ask yourself some questions: How did I treat those around me today? Did I treat them the way that I would want to be treated? How was my work today? Did I do it justice? Run through the commandments in your head. At the end of the reflection, repent and ask God for strength to do better tomorrow. In order to truly celebrate the Nativity of John the Baptist, we should heed his advice to repent and “Prepare the way of the Lord.”

Today we celebrate the Nativity of John the Baptist. John

A poem on the hands of a priest:

We need them in life’s early morning, We need them again at its close; We feel their warm clasp of true friend-ship, We seek it while tasting life’s woes.

When we come to this world we are sin-ful, The greatest as well as the least. And the hands that make us pure as an-gels Are the beautiful hands of a priest.

At the altar each day we behold them, And the hands of a king on his throne Are not equal to them in their greatness Their dignity stands alone.

For there in the stillness of morning Ere the sun has emerged from the east,

There God rests between the pure fingers Of the beautiful hands of a priest.

When we are tempted and wander To pathways of shame and sin

‘Tis the hand of a priest that absolve us. Not once but again and again.

And when we are taking life’s partner Other hands may prepare us a feast

But the hands that will bless and unite us, Are the beautiful hands of a priest.

God bless them and keep them all holy, For the Host which their fingers caress,

What can a poor sinner do better Than to ask Him who chose them to bless

When the death dews on our lids are fall-ing,

May our courage and strength be in-creased

By seeing raised o’er us in blessing The beautiful hands of a priest.
