ABSTRACT

Creating student leadership opportunities within a team setting is difficult.

Using components such as : upward mobility, appropriate levels of challenge and support, delegation, and

empowerment…

This presentation will discuss how to build and develop great student leaders via the implementation of these components.

Why is structure important? – Upward Mobility & Empowerment

1. Expands our service and support to incoming students and families.2. Simultaneously provides additional opportunities for leadership skill

development within the Blue Crew.3. Facilitates Blue Crew to be invested in their work (crossover into

empowerment)

Without upward mobility in the program:• Stagnant/Stunted Leadership Development• Miss out on opportunities to improve our outreach efforts• Hinders our ability to respond to the changing needs of incoming

students and families

Executive Council– Upward Mobility, Delegation and Empowerment

Returning Blue Crew members have the opportunity to serve as Chairs on Executive Council.

• All members of the Blue Crew are surveyed about committee interest; assignments based on their responses• Provides opportunity to focus on their strengths/passions, which facilitates

empowerment• Preparing for SROW• Big Project little pieces = back-tasking

• Stipend increase acknowledges additional responsibilities

• All Returners serve as partners/mentors for new Blue Crew members for Campus Research Projects • One-on-one relationship further develops leadership skill set

Blue Crew Leadership Class: Challenge & Support

Challenge is in the Campus Project – Which allows them to develop their leadership style represented by

the outer ring.

Inner Ring represents the support given through knowledge in the 1st half of Spring Training.
