    BS 476 OVERVIEW

First, published as a single volume in 1932.

Then revised in 1935 into three parts:

    Part- 1, 2 3.

BS 476 Part-1 is related to combustibility of

materials, surface spread of flame for

    materials fire resistance of structures.

Revision of Part-1 was republished in 1971

which is divided into 4 parts i.e. Part-5, Part-

    6, Part-7 Part-8.

    Scope

This part of BS 476 specifies a method of

test, the result being expressed as fire

    propagation index, that provides a

    comparative measure of the contribution

to the growth of fire made by an essentially

    flat surface, composite or assembly.

Revision of Part 8 republished in 1972.

    The four parts, BS 476 Part-20, 21, 22 23, taken

together constitute a complete revision of BS 476 Part

    8 published in 1987.

The objective of determine fire resistance as described

in this part of BS 476 is to assess the behaviour of a

specimen of element of building construction when

subjected to defined heating and pressure conditions.

    TestingTest Procedure:

The specimen shall be heated in a

    furnace which can produce a

    positive pressure.

    Standard Heating Conditions:

    The temperature of the furnace

shall be controlled to vary with

time as closely as possible in

    accordance with standard

    time/temperature curve.

The test specimen shall be heated

    in until failure has occurred

    under all relevant test criteria.

Observations & Results:Observations during test: Test Results:

    Recording:

    Stability: The deformation of

    specimen, occurrence of

    collapse, or any other factor

    which could affect its stability.

    Integrity: In elements which

    have separating function the

    presence of cracks or other

    openings shall be noted.

    Insulation: In elements

    having separating function

    Test results stated in

    31/33

    Criteria of failure:

    General Conditions:

    Non-load bearing:

Failure shall be deemed to occur

when collapse of the specimen takes place.

Load bearing : A load bearing specimen shall support

the test load during the prescribed heating period and

also after 24 h after the end of heating period.

Insulation : Failure shall be deemed to occur when the

mean temperature of the unexposed surface of the

specimen increases by more then 140 C above initial

    temp.

  • 8/11/2019 Presentation BS 476

    32/33

Floors and Flat roofs: According to above all criteria of failure.

    Columns: Compliance with Stability

    Beams:

    Compliance with

    Stability.

Shall be deemed to have failed when

the max. deflection exceeds L/30, where L=Clear span.

Suspended ceiling protecting steel beams: The limit of effective

protection shall be deemed to have occurred; panels become dislodged,

    temp. at any beam

Door and shutter assembly Glazing :

    Compliance with all the

three criteria of failure. Failure shall be deemed to have occurred if an

unobstructed gap or fissure exceeding 6mm in width by 150mm in length

exists or develops. If sustained flaming more than 10 s occurs on

unexposed face, it shall constitute failure.

    Ceiling Membranes:

    Compliance with Criteria of failure.
