RICCARDO MUTI

Riccardo Muti (Nápoles, Italia, 1941) estudió

piano, composición y dirección de orquesta. Ha

sido director del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, de la

London Philarmonia, de la Orquesta de Filadelfia,

del Teatro alla Scala de Milán y de la Orquesta

Filarmónica del mismo teatro. Desde 2010 es director

musical de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Chicago. Ha

dirigido producciones operísticas en importantes

escenarios y rescatado obras del repertorio napolitano

del siglo XVIII y autores menos conocidos, como

Gluck, Cherubini, Spontini y Poulenc. Fundador

de la Orquesta Juvenil “Luigi Cherubini”, ha sido

director invitado del Festival de Salzburgo y de las

filarmónicas de Berlín y Viena y es doctor honoris

causa por 11 universidades y miembro de las

academias de Santa Cecilia (Roma), Luigi Cherubini

(Florencia) y Filarmónica de Bolonia. Caballero de

la Gran Cruz de Italia y del Imperio Británico, es

Comendador de la Orden de Malta y pertenece a

la Legión de Honor de Francia y a la Orden de la

Amistad de Rusia.

Riccardo Muti (Naples, 1941) studied piano,

composition and conducting. He has conducted

the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the London

Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra, as

well as being the music director of the Teatro alla

Scala in Milan and conductor of its Philharmonic

Orchestra. He has been the music director of the

Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 2010. He has

conducted operatic productions in important

venues and rescued 18th-century Neapolitan

repertoire and lesser-known composers such as

Gluck, Cherubini, Spontini and Poulenc. Founder

of the “Luigi Cherubini” Youth Orchestra, he has

been guest conductor at the Salzburg Festival and

of the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras.

He holds honorary doctorates from 11 universities

and is a member of the academies of Santa Cecilia

(Rome), Luigi Cherubini (Florence) and the Bologna

Philharmonic. Knight Grand Cross of the Italian

Republic and of the Order of the British Empire,

he is Commander of the Order of Malta and has

been awarded the French Legion of Honour and the

Russian Order of Friendship.

Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences

HOWARD GARDNER

Howard Gardner (Scranton, EE.UU., 1943), doctor

en Psicología Social por la Universidad de Harvard,

de la que es catedrático de Cognición y Educación

y profesor adjunto de Psicología, es codirector y

presidente del comité gestor del Proyecto Zero,

también en Harvard, que estudia los procesos de

aprendizaje de los seres humanos. Ha desarrollado

su teoría de las inteligencias múltiples que sostiene

que cada individuo posee al menos ocho habilidades

cognoscitivas: la lingüística, la lógico-matemática,

la cinético-corporal, la musical, la espacial, la

naturalista, la interpersonal y la intrapersonal.

Considera, además, que carecen de valor intrínseco

y que el comportamiento del individuo en sociedad,

haciendo uso de su inteligencia, es una cuestión

moral fundamental. Participa también en el

GoodWork Project, destinado a mejorar la calidad

y la autoestima profesionales, tomando como

referencia la excelencia y la ética. Autor de 25 libros y

de alrededor de 450 artículos, está en posesión de 26

doctorados honoris causa y es miembro de honor de

numerosas instituciones académicas.

Howard Gardner (Scranton, USA, 1943) holds a PhD

in Social Psychology from Harvard University, where

he is Full Professor of Cognition and Education and

Associate Professor of Psychology. He is co-director

and chairman of the steering committee of Project

Zero, also at Harvard, which studies human learning

processes. He has developed his theory of multiple

intelligences, which holds that each individual has

at least eight cognitive skills: linguistic, logical-

mathematical, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, spatial,

naturalist, interpersonal and intrapersonal. It also

considers that these skills lack intrinsic value and

that the individual’s behaviour in society, using his

or her intelligence, is a fundamental moral issue.

Gardner also forms part of the GoodWork Project

aimed at improving professional quality and self-

esteem, taking the factors of excellence and ethics

as a reference. Author of 25 books and around

450 articles, he holds 26 honorary doctorates and

is an honorary member of numerous academic

Background

Sus orígenes se remontan a 1640, aunque su

constitución oficial tuvo lugar en 1660. Su actual

presidente es Sir Paul Nurse, Premio Nobel de

Medicina. The Royal Society organiza conferencias,

encuentros científicos y proyectos de investigación,

su biblioteca tiene más de 70.000 títulos y edita 8

revistas, entre ellas, la Philosophical Transactions, la

más antigua existente. Entre los trabajos publicados

desde su fundación se incluyen la descripción en

1666 de una transfusión de sangre, el estudio de

Newton sobre la luz y los colores, documentos del

explorador James Cook o las condiciones que en

1752 llevaron a Benjamin Franklin a la invención del

pararrayos. Concede once medallas y nueve premios.

Its origins date back to 1640, although it was

officially founded in 1660. Its current president is Sir

Paul Nurse, Nobel Laureate in Medicine. The Royal

Society organises conferences, scientific meetings

and research projects, its library boasts more than

70,000 works and it publishes 8 journals, including

Philosophical Transactions, the oldest existing

scientific publication. Among the works published

since its founding are to be found the description

of a blood transfusion in 1666, Newton’s study on

light and colours, documents that belonged to the

explorer James Cook and the conditions that led

Benjamin Franklin to invent the lightning conductor

in 1752. It grants eleven medals and nine awards.

“Por el descubrimiento de la regeneración de neuronas

en cerebros adultos –un proceso conocido como

neurogénesis– y las neuronas espejo . Los descubrimientos

de estos tres investigadores se encuentran entre

los hallazgos más importantes de la neurobiología,

cambiando nuestra forma de entender el cerebro, desde

los tiempos del profesor Santiago Ramón y Cajal . Estas

investigaciones abren nuevos caminos para el tratamiento

de enfermedades neurodegenerativas, como el Alzheimer

y el Parkinson, así como para la comprensión y posible

tratamiento del autismo” .

Considerados referentes mundiales de la Neurología,

Joseph Altman, Arturo Álvarez-Buylla y Giacomo

Rizzolatti han proporcionado pruebas sólidas sobre

Joseph Altman, Arturo Alvarez-Buylla and

Giacomo Rizzolatti have provided solid proof

of the regeneration of neurons in adult brains

(neurogenesis) and have discovered what are known

as mirror neurons.

Joseph Altman began his research at the

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and

then moved to Purdue University (Indiana). In

the 1960s he discovered neurogenesis in adults,

but received little attention from the scientific

community until he demonstrated the truth of

his theory in the 1990s. Using the technique of

autoradiography with tritiated thymidine to mark

dividing cells, his research evidenced the

existence of neurogenesis in some areas of the

postnatal and adult brain in rats, especially in the

Arturo Álvarez-Buylla, licenciado en Investigación

Biomédica por la UNAM (1983) y doctor por la

Rockefeller (1988), institución en la que ha ejercido

la docencia desde 1989 hasta 2000, actualmente es

investigador y profesor de Anatomía y Neurocirugía

en la Universidad de California-San Francisco. Sus

principales campos de trabajo son la neurogénesis

del cerebro de los mamíferos adultos, el ensamblaje

del cerebro, los tumores cerebrales y su curación

y la ontogenia y la filogenia del comportamiento.

Descubrió que una subpoblación de células gliales

funciona como progenitores primarios de nuevas

neuronas que se incorporan al bulbo olfativo.

Describió en ese sistema la zona sub-ventricular, que

es el origen de la neurogénesis de células olfativas en

el adulto y la migración en cadena de estas células

para alcanzar el bulbo olfativo, siguiendo una vía

específica denominada rostral migratory stream.

Giacomo Rizzolatti (Kiev, 1937) estudió Medicina

y Cirugía en la Universidad de Padua, donde se

especializó en Neurología. Es profesor de Fisiología

del Departamento de Neurociencias de la Universidad

de Parma. Sus primeras investigaciones estuvieron

centradas en los campos de la fisiología del sueño

y la visión. En los 90 descubrió en el cerebro de los

monos un tipo de neuronas que se activaban no solo

cuando el individuo realizaba una acción concreta,

sino también cuando observaba a un congénere

realizar la misma acción. Denominadas neuronas

espejo, este hallazgo inició una revolución en la

comprensión del modo en que se interactúa con los

demás. Las neuronas espejo son las que permiten

explicar la imitación y la empatía. Del mismo modo,

un déficit de las mismas puede ser responsable de

varios síntomas del autismo: los problemas sociales,

motores y de lenguaje.

Arturo Álvarez-Buylla earned his degree in

Biomedical Research at the UNAM (1983) and a PhD

from the Rockefeller University (1988), an institution

where he lectured between 1989 and 2000. He is

currently a researcher and professor of Anatomy

and Neurosurgery at the University of California,

San Francisco. His main fields of research comprise

the neurogenesis of the adult mammalian brain, the

assembly of the brain, brain tumours and their repair,

and the ontogeny and phylogeny of behaviour.

He discovered that a subpopulation of glial cells

function as primary progenitors of new neurons

incorporated in the olfactory bulb. He described the

sub-ventricular zone of this system, which is the

origin of olfactory cell neurogenesis in adults, and

the chain migration of these cells to the olfactory

bulb, following a specific pathway called the rostral

migratory stream.

Giacomo Rizzolatti (Kiev, 1937) studied Medicine

and Surgery at the University of Padua, where

he specialized in Neurology. He is Professor of

Physiology in the Department of Neurosciences

at the University of Parma. The focus of his early

research work lay in the fields of the physiology of

dreaming and sight. In the 1990s he discovered a

type of neuron in monkey brains that was activated

not only when the individual performed a particular

action, but also when watching a conspecific

perform the same action. Called mirror neurons,

this finding led a revolution in our understanding of

the way in which individuals interact with others.

Mirror neurons enable imitation and empathy to be

explained. Likewise, a deficit of mirror neurons may

be responsible for several important symptoms of

autism: social, motor and language-related problems.

LEONARD COHEN

Leonard Cohen (Montreal, 1934), licenciado en

Literatura, publicó en 1956, inspirado en Federico

García Lorca, por el que siempre ha manifestado

gran admiración, su primer poemario, Let us compare

mythologies. Es autor asimismo de Spice-box of Earth

(1961), Flowers for Hitler (1964), Parasites of Heaven

(1966), The energy of slaves (1972) y Book of mercy

(1984), y de las novelas The favourite game (1963) y

Beautiful losers (1966). Su primer disco fue Songs of

Leonard Cohen (1967). Le siguieron Songs from a Room

(1969) y Songs of Love and Hate (1971). En los 70 y

80 realizó giras por todo el mundo y publicó Live

Songs (1973), New Skin for the Old Ceremony (1974),

Death of Ladies’ Man (1977), Recent Songs (1979) y

worldwide throughout the 70s and 80s and released

Live Songs (1973), New Skin for the Old Ceremony

(1974), Death of a Ladies’ Man (1977), Recent Songs

(1979) and Various Positions (1984), whose song

Hallelujah has cover versions by over 150 artists, I’m

Your Man (1988), followed by The Future (1992), Ten

New Songs (2001), Dear Heather (2004) and Blue Alert

(2006). To celebrate his 40th anniversary as an artist,

Cohen began a world tour in 2008 that included 84

concerts, the result of which was the live album Songs

from the Road. Officer and Companion of the Order of

Canada, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall

of Fame in 2008. He is holder of a Grammy Award

and the Glenn Gould Prize.

BILL DRAYTON

Bill Drayton (Nueva York, 1943) estudió en Harvard,

Oxford y Yale. Empezó su carrera profesional en

McKinsey and Company y fue entonces, influido

por Martin Luther King y Gandhi, así como por

el emperador indio Ashoka, cuando fundó las

organizaciones Ashoka: Innovators for the Public,

una red de apoyo a emprendedores sociales, y Save

EPA, predecesora de Environmental Safety. Ashoka,

de la que es presidente y máximo ejecutivo, reposa

sobre la idea de que los retos de la sociedad necesitan

que cada persona pueda ser protagonista del cambio,

desde cualquier ámbito, ya sea global o local. Desde

su creación, ha proporcionado financiación inicial,

Haile Gebrselassie (Arssi, Etiopía, 1973) comenzó

a correr en 1991 en Amberes y desde entonces ha

conseguido numerosos triunfos en campeonatos

mundiales (Seúl, Stuttgart, Budapest, Goteborg,

Mónaco, Edmonton, Bristol, Dubai y Manchester) y

olimpiadas (Atlanta, Sídney, Atenas, Pekín), siempre

en 3.000, 5.000 y 10.000 m. Tras sufrir una lesión,

optó por especializarse en maratón y media maratón,

ganando y estableciendo récords en Ámsterdam,

Phoenix y Berlín. En total ha batido 26 récords

mundiales, superando su propia marca en el Maratón

de Berlín de 2008. Es el impulsor de la iniciativa

The Great Ethiopian Run y uno de los integrantes del

grupo The Elders, formado por personalidades etíopes

que median en la resolución de conflictos entre el

Gobierno, la oposición y la sociedad civil. Embajador

de Buena Voluntad de UNICEF y PNUD, entre otras

instituciones, ha inaugurado dos escuelas en Bahar

Dar y Assela (Etiopía).

Haile Gebrselassie (Arssi, Ethiopia, 1973) started

competing in 1991 in Antwerp and has since won

numerous victories in World Championships

(Seoul, Stuttgart, Budapest, Gothenburg, Monaco,

Edmonton, Bristol, Dubai and Manchester) and at

the Olympics (Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, Beijing),

always in 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 m. After suffering

an injury, he chose to specialise in the marathon

and half marathon, winning and setting records

in Amsterdam, Phoenix and Berlin. He has broken

26 world records in all, beating his own record in

the 2008 Berlin Marathon. He is the driving force

behind The Great Ethiopian Run Initiative and one of

the Elders, a group of Ethiopian personalities who

have mediated in conflict resolution between the

government, the opposition and civil society. He is a

Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF and UNDP, among

other institutions, and has opened two schools in

Bahir Dar and Assela (Ethiopia).

“El jurado ha valorado la respuesta serena y abnegada

del conjunto de la sociedad japonesa desde los sucesos

de marzo de 2011, que tuvo su más alta expresión en

los grupos de personas que, llevando esa abnegación

a un grado heroico, pusieron en riesgo la propia vida al

afrontar en la central siniestrada y su entorno las tareas

que evitaron una tragedia humana y ambiental de mayores

dimensiones, dando al mundo un ejemplo de coraje ante

la adversidad, sentido del deber, defensa del bien común y

conciencia cívica” .

HÉROES DE FUKUSHIMATHE HEROES OF FUKUSHIMA

The earthquake and subsequent tsunami that

occurred in Japan on 11th March 2011 caused around

28,000 deaths and displaced some 350,000 people.

The damage to the Fukushima nuclear power plant

resulted in hydrogen explosions and fusion of the

nuclear fuel. The different groups that worked in

Fukushima did so under extreme conditions (high

radiation, continuously rotating shifts and only a few

hours of rest, in addition to limited supplies of food

and drinking water). Despite so, they continued to

work to regain control of the nuclear plant, aware of

how essential their work was to prevent a catastrophe

of even greater magnitude. This work was carried out

by firemen, policemen, members of the Japan Self-

Defense Forces and employees of the Tokyo Electric

Power Company (TEPCO), the plant’s operator; of

its 130 workers, 50 volunteered, as did some workers

who had already retired or were nearing retirement,

and, after increasing the number of rotating shifts

and the needs for personnel, additional staff

was hired (as of 3rd May, 1,312 workers had been

deployed).

El terremoto y posterior maremoto que tuvo lugar

en Japón el 11 de marzo de 2011 causó en torno a

28.000 muertos y 350.000 desplazados. Los daños

en la central nuclear de Fukushima provocaron

explosiones de hidrógeno y la fusión del combustible

nuclear. Los colectivos que trabajaron en Fukushima

lo hicieron en condiciones extremas (elevada

radiación, continuas rotaciones y pocas horas de

descanso, limitaciones en la alimentación y en

el suministro de agua potable). A pesar de ello,

continuaron con las labores para recobrar el control

de la central, conscientes de lo imprescindible de

su trabajo para evitar una catástrofe de magnitudes

mayores. Las tareas fueron desarrolladas por

bomberos, por policías, por miembros de las Fuerzas

de Autodefensa de Japón y por empleados de la

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), operadora

de la central; de sus 130 operarios, 50 se presentaron

voluntarios, así como algunos trabajadores ya

jubilados o próximos a la jubilación y, tras aumentar

las rotaciones y las necesidades de personal, se

contrató a más personas (a 3 de mayo, ya habían

intervenido 1.312 operarios).

Héroes de Fukushima

La música es encuentro, la ópera es

encuentro y de los encuentros brotan

luego estas maravillas que nos asombran

y nos apasionan . Naturalmente, mi tarea

hoy, en calidad de músico, no es tan

solo demostrar si soy capaz de dirigir,

más o menos, a Verdi, o a Beethoven o

a Strauss, sino si a través de la música

puedo hacer que los encuentros lleven a

la belleza y a la hermandad .

Estamos convencidos de que el Premio

Príncipe de Asturias de la Concordia

2011 no se nos ha concedido solo a

quienes estamos aquí, sino más bien a

todos los que todavía siguen realizando

sus actividades in situ .

Music is an encounter, the opera is an encounter…

and these wonders that amaze us and awaken our

passions later blossom from these encounters.

Naturally, my present task as a musician is not only

to demonstrate whether I am –more or less– able to

conduct Verdi, or Beethoven or Strauss, but whether,

through music, I can make these encounters lead to

beauty and brotherhood.

We realise that the 2011 Prince of Asturias Award for

Concord has not been conferred solely on those of us

who are here today, but also on all those who are still

working on site.

SEMANA DE LOS PREMIOSAWARDS WEEK

La Fundación desarrolló, entre los días 17 y 21 de

octubre, una de las semanas culturales más completas

de las últimas ediciones de los Premios Príncipe de

Asturias. Se organizaron 16 actos culturales con los

galardonados, con diversos formatos: exposiciones,

conciertos, conferencias, debates científicos,

desayunos de trabajo y visitas institucionales, a los

que asistieron más de 8.000 personas. En dichas

actividades colaboraron más de 200 expertos como el

presidente del CSIC, Rafael Rodrigo, los divulgadores

científicos Eduard Punset y Manuel Toharia, el

guitarrista Javier Mas, el cantaor Duquende y la

Orquesta Juvenil Luigi Cherubini, entre otros, además

de escritores, intelectuales y profesionales de distintos

ámbitos de toda España.

Between 17th and 21st October, the Foundation

embarked on one of the most comprehensive cultural

weeks related to the Prince of Asturias Awards in

recent years. Sixteen cultural events with the Laureates

were organised under different formats: exhibitions,

concerts, talks, scientific debates, breakfast meetings

and institutional visits, which were attended by

over 8,000 people. Over 200 experts took part in

these activities, such as the President of CSIC, Rafael

Rodrigo, the science communicators Eduard Punset

and Manuel Toharia, the guitarist Javier Mas, the

Flamenco singer Duquende and the Luigi Cherubini

Youth Orchestra, among others, in addition to writers,

intellectuals and professionals from different spheres

of Spanish society.

Coloquio con Howard Gardner

El acto, desarrollado en el Teatro Palacio Valdés

(Avilés), contó con la participación de Eduard

Punset y Jorge Ruiz, en su condición de logopeda,

que interpretó en acústico una canción de su grupo,

Maldita Nerea.

El profesor Gardner mantuvo un desayuno de

trabajo con un reducido grupo de especialistas de su

ámbito de estudio en el Centro Cultural de Extensión

Universitaria LAUDEO (Universidad de Oviedo).

Exposición “Transacciones. España en la historia de

la Royal Society”

Más de cien piezas originales de gran valor histórico y

científico, como el primer microscopio de la historia,

dibujos histológicos de Ramón y Cajal o el mapa

de Colombia dibujado por Felipe Bauzá durante la

expedición Malaspina, se expusieron en la Biblioteca

del Edificio Histórico de la Universidad de Oviedo

con motivo de la entrega de los Premios. Grupos de

escolares y miles de personas visitaron la exposición

los 28 días que permaneció abierta al público.

Tras la inauguración oficial, se celebró un

encuentro científico en el Centro Cultural LAUDEO,

bajo el título “El Universo en una cáscara de nuez.

Los grandes retos de la ciencia del futuro”, entre el

presidente de la Royal Society, Sir Paul Nurse, y el

presidente del CSIC, Rafael Rodrigo, moderado por

el profesor César Nombela.

Homenaje a Leonard Cohen

La Fundación rindió tributo a Leonard Cohen con

un acto que tuvo a la guitarra española y a la poesía

como protagonistas. En el homenaje participaron

artistas y escritores, como el guitarrista español

The event, which took place in the Palacio Valdés

Theatre (Avilés), featured Eduard Punset and Jorge

Ruiz, in his role as a speech therapist, who also

played an acoustic version of a song by his group,

Maldita Nerea.

Professor Gardner held a breakfast meeting with

a small group of specialists in his field of study at

the LAUDEO Universtity Extension Cultural Centre

(University of Oviedo).

Exhibition “Transactions. Spain in the history of The

Royal Society”

More than one hundred original exhibits of great

historical and scientific value, such as the first ever

microscope, histological drawings by Ramón y

Cajal and the map of Colombia drawn by Felipe

Bauzá during the Malaspina expedition, were on

show in the University of Oviedo Historic Building

Library to mark the Awards Ceremony. Groups of

schoolchildren and thousands of people visited the

exhibition over the 28 days it was open to the public.

After the official opening, a scientific meeting was

held at the LAUDEO Cultural Centre, entitled “The

Universe in a Nutshell. The Major Challenges of the

Science of the Future”, between the President of The

Royal Society, Sir Paul Nurse, and Rafael Rodrigo,

A Tribute to Leonard Cohen

The Foundation paid tribute to Leonard Cohen with

an event at which the Spanish guitar and poetry

took centre stage. Artists and writers such as the

Oviedo acogió una exposición de grabados realizados

por Leonard Cohen, quien inauguró la muestra y

descubrió una placa conmemorativa de su visita a la

Facultad.

Encuentro científico

Los tres galardonados con el Premio Príncipe de

Asturias de Investigación Científica y Técnica, Joseph

Altman, Giacomo Rizzolatti y Arturo Álvarez-Buylla,

participaron en un encuentro científico en el salón

de actos del Centro Cultural Cajastur, moderado por

Manuel Toharia, director científico de la Ciudad de

las Artes y las Ciencias de Valencia.

Además, Arturo Álvarez-Buylla y Giacomo Rizzolatti

participaron en dos desayunos de trabajo con expertos

en sus respectivas disciplinas, procedentes de centros

de investigación y universidades de distintos puntos de

España, que se celebraron en la Capilla y en el Centro

Cultural de Extensión Universitaria, LAUDEO, de la

Universidad de Oviedo.

SS.AA.RR. los Príncipes de Asturias presidieron el

The three Prince of Asturias Laureates for Technical

and Scientific Research, Joseph Altman, Giacomo

Rizzolatti and Arturo Álvarez-Buylla, took part in a

scientific meeting in the auditorium of the Cajastur

Cultural Centre, chaired by Manuel Toharia, scientific

director of the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia.

Arturo Álvarez-Buylla and Giacomo Rizzolatti also

attended two breakfast meetings with experts in their

respective disciplines belonging to research centres

and universities from different parts of Spain which

were held in the University of Oviedo Chapel and

the LAUDEO University Extension Cultural Centre.

TRH the Prince and Princess of Asturias presided over

the Closing Concert of the XX Music Week, which

brought the programme of activities preceding the

Awards Ceremony to a close. Maestro Riccardo Muti

Bill Drayton mantuvo un encuentro con jóvenes

del programa “Jóvenes Emprendedores Sociales”

Pérez, Pericles, emprendedor social de Ashoka.

También visitó una exposición al aire libre sobre los

proyectos desarrollados por los estudiantes durante

el pasado curso, cuyos beneficios se destinan a un

centro educativo de un país en vías de desarrollo.

Dentro de su programa de actos, Bill Drayton

visitó también la Unidad Terapéutica y Educativa

del Centro Penitenciario de Villabona, proyecto

pionero en el sistema carcelario español, liderado por

Faustino Zapico, emprendedor social de Ashoka, y

mantuvo un encuentro con los presos que participan

en este programa.

Héroes de Fukushima

Los Héroes de Fukushima mantuvieron un emotivo

encuentro con sus homólogos de las respectivas

fuerzas y cuerpos de seguridad locales y regionales

del Principado de Asturias (policía, bomberos y

militares), y realizaron visitas institucionales a la

Junta General del Principado, al Ayuntamiento de

Gijón y a la Comisaría de Policía de Gijón.

Meeting between Bill Drayton and young social

entrepreneurs

Bill Drayton held a meeting with young

entrepreneurs belonging to the “Young Social

Entrepreneurs” programme developed by Valnalon

and led by Jose Manuel Pérez (Pericles), an Ashoka

social entrepreneur. He also visited an outdoor

exhibition depicting the projects developed by

students during the past year, the profits of which go

to a school in a developing country.

As part of the programme of events, Bill Drayton

also visited the Therapeutic and Educational Unit at

Villabona Prison, a pioneering project in the Spanish

prison system led by Faustino Zapico, an Ashoka

social entrepreneur, and met with the inmates

participating in this programme.

The Heroes of Fukushima

The Heroes of Fukushima held an emotive meeting

with their counterparts in the respective local and

regional law enforcement and public safety agencies

in the Principality of Asturias (police, firemen and

armed forces), as well as making institutional visits

to the Regional Parliament, Gijón City Council and

Gijón National Police Station.

Convocatoria

Una vez celebrado el acto de entrega de los Premios

Príncipe de Asturias 2010 se procedió a la impresión y

distribución de tres mil ejemplares de la publicación

que contiene, en cinco idiomas, la Convocatoria y

Reglamento de los galardones. Como es habitual,

fue enviada a los principales centros culturales y

de investigación, a academias y universidades de

prestigio mundial, instituciones culturales españolas

e internacionales (bibliotecas, museos, etc.), comités

olímpicos nacionales y federaciones internacionales

de deportes olímpicos, embajadores de España

en el extranjero y cuerpo diplomático acreditado

en España, así como a todos los galardonados en

ediciones anteriores.

Reuniones de los jurados

Los jurados encargados de conceder los Premios

Príncipe de Asturias 2011 se reunieron en la ciudad

de Oviedo en los meses de mayo, junio y septiembre

y estuvieron compuestos por un total de 170

personalidades, expertas en los diferentes ámbitos

de cada uno de los ocho galardones.

Jury meetings

The juries responsible for granting the 2011 Prince

of Asturias Awards met in the city of Oviedo in May,

June and September and were composed of 170

personalities, all experts in the different areas of each

of the eight Awards.

Call for nominations

Once the 2010 Prince of Asturias Awards Ceremony

had been held, three thousand copies of the

publication –in five languages– containing the Call

for Nominations and the Regulations of the Awards

were distributed. As usual, the publication was sent

to major centres of culture and research, academies

and universities of renown worldwide, Spanish and

foreign cultural institutions (libraries, museums, etc.),

National Olympic Committees and International

Olympic Sports Federations, Spain’s ambassadors

abroad and accredited diplomatic corps in Spain,

as well as to all the Laureates from previous years.

Candidatures

In all, 251 candidatures from 55 different countries

were accepted, backed by more than 19,600 people

and organisations from around the world.

Impacto

Las actividades organizadas por la Fundación,

especialmente la concesión y entrega de los Premios

Príncipe de Asturias, han tenido una gran repercusión

en los medios de comunicación nacionales e

internacionales.

Según los datos facilitados por Kantar Media,

consultora de seguimiento de medios, el número

de referencias en medios nacionales en el año 2011

ascendió a 3.741, con una audiencia acumulada de

1.185.648.000 personas y una valoración económica

cercana a los 27 millones de euros.

Impact

The activities organised by the Foundation, especially

the granting and presenting of the Prince of Asturias

Awards, had a major impact in the national and

international media.

According to data provided by the media

monitoring consultants Kantar Media, the number

of references in the national media in 2011 reached

the figure of 3,741, with a cumulative audience of

1,185,648,000 people and an economic valuation of

close to 27 million euros.

Renovación convenio con Euronews

La Fundación y el canal internacional de noticias

líder en Europa, Euronews –con 318 millones de

abonados en 153 países de Europa, Oriente Medio,

África, Asia, Estados Unidos y América Latina–,

renovaron en 2011 su acuerdo de colaboración

para la transmisión en directo de los fallos de

los Jurados de los Premios y de la ceremonia del

Teatro Campoamor, así como para la realización de

programas especiales sobre los galardonados durante

la semana de la entrega de los Premios Príncipe de

Asturias.

Renewal of the agreement with Euronews

In 2011, the Foundation and the leading

international news channel in Europe, Euronews,

which boasts 318 million subscribers in 153 countries

in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the USA and

Latin America, renewed their agreement to broadcast

live the announcements of the Award Juries’

decisions as well as the Awards Ceremony at the

Campoamor Theatre and to air special programmes

during the week leading up to the Prince of Asturias

Awards Ceremony.

Internet y redes sociales

La presencia de la Fundación en Internet mantiene

el crecimiento constante de los últimos años. A lo

largo de 2011 la web de la institución recibió 314.399

visitas procedentes de 180 países, con un registro

total de 1.424.847 páginas vistas. Un dato al que

ha contribuido una vez más la semana de entrega

de los Premios Príncipe de Asturias, durante la que

se superaron las 300.000 páginas vistas por más de

39.000 usuarios de 143 países.

The Foundation’s presence on the Internet has

continued to grow steadily in recent years. During

2011, the Foundation’s website received 314,399

visits from people in 180 countries, with a recorded

Twitter

Con motivo de la entrega de los galardones, la

Fundación incrementó su actividad en la red social

Twitter. Gracias a la estrategia desarrollada, los

Premios se convirtieron en uno de los principales

temas de conversación nacionales en esta red el

viernes 21 de octubre a partir de las 20,30 horas y la

cuenta oficial de la Fundación en Twitter (@fpa_es)

superó los mil seguidores, triplicando su crecimiento

diario a lo largo de esa semana.

The Foundation increased its activity in the social

network Twitter on the occasion of the Awards

Ceremony. Thanks to the implemented strategy, the

Awards became one of the major national trending

topic on the network on Friday, 21st October from

8:30pm and the Foundation’s official account on

Twitter (@fpa_es) had more than one thousand

followers, tripling its daily growth over the week.
