Pasaia a un goût de sel et de port, elle respire la culturemaritime par toutes ses pores. Chaque recoin est synonymed’aventure: ses maisons de pêcheurs, son Chantier NavalTraditionnel Ontziola, ses églises et ses cimetières, leManoir Platain, le Palais d’Arizabalo et ses Clubs d’Avironssont des spectateurs muets qui ont été chantés pard’illustres visiteurs comme l’écrivain français Victor Hugo,le Marquis de Lafayette ou le philosophe allemandHumboldt et qui ont vécu des moments glorieux grâce auxillustres enfants de Pasaia, les Frères Ferrer ou Blas deLezo.

Tournant le dos à Aiako Harria, en regardant la mer à travers la Baie de Pasaia et protégéepar les tours de Jaizkibel et le Fort de San Marcos, nous trouvons la Contrée d’Oarsoaldea,

formée par les communes de Errenteria, Lezo, Oiartzun et Pasaia et située entreDonostia-San Sebastián et la Baie de Txingudi.

Oarsoaldea, riche et variée, rassemble le marin de haute mer ou “mariñela”, le pêcheur ou“arrantzale”, l’agriculteur ou “baserritarra”, et l’industriel. Cette relation marque un paysage bleu

et vert, encore vierge, avec une gastronomie propre où les produits de la terre et de la meracquièrent leur plus haute saveur grâce aux secrets bien gardés de nos cuisines.

Au bord de la Baie de Pasaia et au pied du Mont Jaizkibel,nous trouvons l’Université de Lezo. Dans son QuartierHistorique se dresse la sereine Basilique du Santo Cristo,célèbre depuis la nuit des temps pour son Christ imberbe,qui nous offre la simplicité et le bon goût d’un peuple encontact direct avec son passé.

Le Mont Jaizkibel, le plus élevé de la Côte du Golfe deGascogne, d’où on peut profiter d’un paysage bicolore- levert de la nature et le bleu du Golfe de Gascogne- est lechemin rêvé pour tout excursionniste qui se dirige vers laproche Hondarribia.

Protégé par Aiako Harria,imposant géant granitique quiamorce les Pyrénées du Côte Atlantique, Oiartzun est unvillage fier de ses coutumes et fidèle à celles-ci, ce quil’amène à vivre en parfaite harmonie avec l’environnementnaturel qui l’entoure.

Une manière de découvrir Oiartzun est de se promenerdans son Quartier Historique, où s’élèvent l’Égliseparoissiale de San Esteban de Lartaun, la Basilique deSan Juan Bautista du XVI siècle, ou en prenant le sentierdénommé “Arditurriko Bidegorria” qui va jusqu’à Errenteriaet auquel seuls peuvent accéder les piétons et lesbicyclettes. d’autoguidage permet de découvrir la Contréed’Oarsoaldea grâce au téléphone portable. Un simpleappel au numéro de téléphone indiqué sur les panneauxqu’on trouve répartis dans les municipalités de Errenteria,Lezo, Oiartzun et Pasaia, permet d’obtenir l’informationsur les ressources culturelles ou naturelles dans différenteslangues (espagnol, basque, anglais et français). Cesystème offre par ailleurs un service complémentaire : ilfournit l’offre culturelle existant dans la contrée à traversl’envoi de messages de texte (SMS).

Fêtes et TraditionsOarsoaldea est une contrée pleine de vie, preuves ensont les nombreuses fêtes et manifestations culturellesqui ont lieu tout au long de l’année. L’offre festive de lacontrée est l’une des plus étendues, des plus intéressanteset des plus amusantes de la zone. Moulin de Fanderia

Dans ce musée, on peut contempler l’ancien moulin àgrain restauré en fonctionnement. Il offre en outre lapossibilité de découvrir la première activité de l’édifice,une ancienne forge municipale d’Errenteriola, antérieureà 1476, ainsi que ses utilisations postérieures.

Gastronomie

Pasaia rises out of the sea, from its harbour. Its magnificentlocation, in one of the only natural fjords on the BasqueCoast, adds to its charm, keeping all its maritime flavourin the four districts which meet in the waters of the Bay:Pasai Donibane, Pasai San Pedro, Trintxerpe and PasaiAntxo.

Pasaia has a savour of salt and sea: maritime culturepermeates the entire town. Every corner is an adventure:the old fishermen's houses, The Traditional OntziolaShipyard, the churches and the cemetery, the PlatainHouse, The Arizabalo Palace, The Rowing Clubs are mutewitnesses whose praises have been sung by such illustriousvisitors as the French writer Victor Hugo, the Marquis ofLafayette or the German philosopher Humboldt. And Pasaiahas also produced its own illustrious sons and daughters,people like the Ferrer brothers and Blas de Lezo.

At the foot of Aiako Harria, looking out towards the sea through the Pasaia Bay and protectedby the great towers of Jaizkibel and the San Marcos Fort stands the District of Oarsoaldea,comprising the municipalities of Errenteria, Lezo, Oiartzun and Pasaia, half-way between

Donostia-San Sebastian and the Txingudi’s Bay.

Oarsoaldea is an area where sailors and fishermen, farmers and industrial workers meet. Andthis relationship is reflected in the blue and green of the unspoiled landscape, with its fine localcuisine, where the fruits of the earth and of the sea find their greatest expression in our kitchens.

Next to the Bay of Pasaia and sitting at the foot of MountainJaizkibel is Lezo University. In its Old Quarter stands theserene Basilica of the Santo Cristo, famous since daysgone by for its beardless Christ, showing us the simplicityand good taste of a people in direct contact with its past.

Mount Jaizkibel, highest mount on the Bay of Biscay, withits two-coloured view-the green of the nature and blue ofthe sea- is the perfect choice for all tourists making theirway to the nearby Hondarribia

Protected by Aiako Harria, an imposing granite giantmarking the start of the Pyrenees from the Atlantic side,Oiartzun is fiercely loyal to its old customs and lives inperfect harmony with its natural surroundings.

One way to enjoy Oiartzun is to wander trough its OldQuarter with the Parish Church of San Esteban de Lartaun,the 16th Century Basilica of San Juan Bautista and theTown Hall, or the follow the “Arditurriko Bidegorria” pathleading to Errenteria, only opend to pedestrians and cyclists.This route guiding us trough varied landscape is a greatoption for getting away and relaxing, even taking us to twopeculiar museums: Luberri-Geological Interpretation Centreand Herri Musikaren Txokoa-The Folk Music Corner.

Errenteria is an open town, whose Historical Centre, listedas a Monumental Complex, contains features dating backto the Middle Ages. Its tower houses, churches, street-plan and the bustle of its shops take us back to times past.

Dominated by countryside, the entrance to wich is protectedby San Marcos Fort, natural viewpoint over the OarsoaldeaRegion, Errenteria takes us along its 40km of paths to theCaves of Aizpitarte, the oldest human remains in theOarsoaldea Region, corresponding to the Upper Palaeolithicera, the Añarbe Reservoir and Woods and the FanderiaMill, among others.

There are several contactpoints distributed among the municipal areas of Errenteria,Lezo, Oiartzun and Pasaia. Immerse yourself in nature in Oarsoaldea: ourmountains have well-signposted paths and informationpanels for hiking, trekking, abseiling, mountain-bike rides,etc.

Aiako Harria Nature Park: there are a number ofdifferent signposted routes you can take to see theprehistoric remains (cromlechs, dolmens, caves…), thatdot the territory of Oiartzun and Errenteria.

San Marcos Fort: set on a magnificent site, the fortressoffers fabulous 360º views out over the towns and hills ofthe Oarsoaldea Area, the Pasaia Bay, the Concha Bay,the Txingudi Bay and the French Coast.

Mount Jaizkibel: highest mount on the Bay of Biscay,offers a magnificent contrast between green meadowsand the blue waves of the Cantabrian Sea.

Mount Ulia: from Pasai San Pedro, this route offersa pleasant seven-kilometre walk to Donostia-San Sebastián,with views of the sea and the Senokozuloa and La Platalighthouses.
