Cual es la situación de la seguridad de suministro HOY en España?
Estudio realizado por la CNMC en 2016
Rodeado de incertidumbres

Cual es la situación de la seguridad de suministro a 2030 en España?

2. Electric vehicle:
• Low-growth Scenario: a sustained growth is considered, with the same exponential trend
recorded between 2009 and 2015.
• Mid-growth Scenario: the same evolution as the low-growth Scenario is considered until 2020.
From that year, 1,000 vehicles a month is added to the sustained growth of the low-growth
Scenario.
• High-growth Scenario: the same evolution as the low-growth Scenario is considered until
2020. A constant growth is assumed in the following decade, achieving that 20% of the electric
fleet is electric in 2030.

8 Maintenance of the current scenario of generation power plants:
• The maintenance of the generation plants currently operating in the Spanish peninsular
electrical system would have the capacity to guarantee the demand coverage until 2030
in the Central Scenario assumptions.
• Only in the scenarios closest to the Upper Extreme Scenario would happen reserve
margin index of less than 1.1 in the last years of the period analyzed, between 2025 and
2030. Even then, additional power capacity would be available thanks to interconnections
and the interruptibility service.
CONCLUSIONS
8 Withdrawal of 50% of coal-fired power capacity scenario
• If the current coal-fired power plants are reduced to 50% by 2020 as a result of tightening
environmental requirements, demand coverage in the Central Scenario would be equally
viable from the point of view of security of supply, but only until 2027.
• On the other hand, the scenarios closest to the Upper Extreme Scenario raise concerns
as early as 2022.
36
8 Withdrawal of the entire coal-fired power capacity scenario
• The complete disappearance of the whole coal fleet by 2020 would introduce problems of
coverage from 2020 if peak demand similar to or higher than the Central Scenario is
considered.
• In addition, in the scenarios near the Upper Extreme, interconnections and interruptibility
service would not be enough to guarantee demand coverage.
• Nevertheless, it should be noted that this situation is unlikely, since the electricity
companies have already undertaken or have informed of their intention to undertake
investments in the most efficient coal-fired power plants.
CONCLUSIONS
8 Progressive disappearance of nuclear power plants scenario
• The closure of nuclear power plants after reaching 40 years of operation also introduces
problems in most of the scenarios, especially those that consider a greater demand
increase, from the year 2024-2025.
• These problems come ahead of 2021-2023 if the closure of all or part of the coal-fired
power plants is additionally considered.
37
8 Exceso de generación solar en las horas centrales del día
8 La capacidad firme de tecnologías de bakup que se necesite tendría un
funcionamiento equivalente a plena carga de unas 2.000-3000 horas en función del
escenario.
