    a.  The basics. 8y now you have given some thought to why you

are coming to Argentina, what your e*pectations are, and how

much time and energy you have to give. A" you !now, children

need to be in a safe and caring environment to thrive. They

need their carers to show them respect, honesty, patience and

understanding9and a good sense of humour is really

    important3 )e have designed this wor!ing boo!let outling the

children's normal day and what e*pectations they:we will have

of you. 2ost of this points you will already !now through your

own commonsense, e*perience or training, nevertheless there

is no harm in reviewing them;i. "afety; The children's safety is everyone's responsibility.

Activities need to be safe. )here there is a ris!, thin!

about how you will manage that ris!. our own safety is

    paramount also.ii.

iii. =nderstanding; )e all need to be shown understanding

and these !ids are no dierent. )hat are they feeling,

are they tired, hungry, hurting> Are they confused,

distressed or unhappy> Observing each child will hold

you to pic! up on how they are feeling. Ta!e time to

ma!e observations and respond to what you see and

feel. ?f a child is sitting alone in the corner, gently

approach and share their space for a while9give them a

hug, and reassurance, and try to follow their interests.

@emember children go a little step forward, then perhaps

a little step bac!. They may have a very little

understanding of %nglish. They may be relying totally on

your body language to interpret what you want them to

do. ive them time and !eep calm. ?f you feel you are

losing your patience and you start feeling stressed $it

happens3&, give yourself some space. Tell the other

carers:volunteers and ta!e a little brea!.iv. "ense of humor – 8eing in a playful mood is the basis of

all play. Any game or interaction depends on our inner

mood. ou can play with a child without any props of you

have a good imagination and you are feeling playful. ?f

an adult is too serious a child will pic! up on this and it

will worry them. hildren live in the present and they

love to play. They learn well through play because it is a

happy time without fear or stress to bloc! their learning

ability. Adults can live in the past or the future and they

forget how to rela* and live in the moment and feel

playful. So bring yourself into the moment.v. 8uilding self esteem and self reliance – )hen we are

given opportunities to achieve, to learn and ta!e a

chance and give something a try without being ridiculed,

we begin to build a strong feeling of self worth, a good

feeling about ourselves. )hen we live the fear, with

abuse and mistrust, our self esteem and our feelings of

worth disappear. )e become afraid – afraid to try

anything new, we are frightened and depressed and so it

is hard to open our minds and ta!e in new information
