Estupor y tembloresAmélie Nothomb

Cuidado con lo que se desea...

Toda novela auto-biográfica inspira alagradecimiento. Sin

importar su desenlace, seagradece siempre al autor elvalor para escribir la lecciónaprendida y la generosidadpara compartirla con el lec-tor.

La maestría de un escritorviene de igualar exitosa-mente su intención con elefecto en el lector. ¿Qué seobtiene entonces si median-te esa maestría también seaprende sobre un mundodesconocido y ajeno al deuno? "Estupor y temblores"de Amélie Nothomb.

El mundo desconocido yajeno es el de las rigurosasjerarquías de una gran cor-poración en Tokio, pero nosolo eso, es también de losincomprensibles códigos deconducta del país del sol na-ciente. Específicamente, lanovela cuenta el increíble einexorable descenso de laautora por el abismo jerár-quico de la compañía, desdeque es contratada comotraductora hasta su puestofinal como vigilante del bañode hombres.

Más profundamente, elrelato habla sobre no perte-necer, sobre ir a contrapelocon la sociedad, las normas,las convenciones y las ex-pectativas, incluso intentan-do lo contrario, o nointentando nada en absoluto.

De manera más sutil, lahistoria podría versar sobrelo masoquista (y tristementecomún en el contexto glo-balizador actual) de desear eidolatrar lo que nos hacedaño, y de aspirar a algo ne-gativo o perjudicial para unomismo, solo quizá por laoportunidad de pertenecer aalgo más grande que noso-

tros o por la promesa de re-vivir un recuerdo añorado dela infancia... pues puede ha-cerse realidad.

No obstante, "Estupory temblores" no es un librosombrío, es más bien lo con-trario, todo gracias al ojo in-teligente de Nothomb quenos deja satisfechos con to-dos los aspectos del libro. Lanarración es humorística ehilarante, llena de la sátira yel sarcasmo que indicansiempre un intelecto supe-rior, curiosamente viniendode una de esas personitasque nadie ve pero que ventodo.

Es precisamente esa visiónla que hace triunfar al libro,no solo al arrebatarnos car-cajadas página tras página,sino por llevarnos concien-zudamente por los detallesmás siniestros de la culturajaponesa, incluyendo oncecrudelísimas páginas sola-mente sobre la mujer nipo-na... o de cualquier país.

Los filmes que marcan elregreso de Keanu Ree-ves a la pantalla grande

han producido expectativapor el sólo hecho de traerlode vuelta. Lo que no garan-tiza ningún buen resultadocuando hablamos en térmi-nos propiamente cinema-tográficos.

John Wick (2014) nos na-rra la historia de un exasesi-no a sueldo, que trata devivir una vida “sin tantosriesgos”, lo que al final no leresulta porque su esposamuere de alguna afecciónque nunca conocemos.

Entonces justo cuandoestá en duelo recibe intem-pestivamente a la mascotade su esposa. Lo que en ese

momento parece ser el úni-co motor de su vida.

Es cuando aparecen losvillanos, muy bien caracteri-zados, una bandada de cri-minales rusos que learrebatan su auto y matan asu perro, lo que marca el re-greso de sus despiadadasprácticas para buscar ven-ganza. Cuando salen a la luzlos rusos, no podemos sertan incautos para no pensaren la situación actual enUcrania y cómo la propa-ganda norteamericana hacomenzado a mover sus hilospara hacer notar a sus ene-migos eslavos…

La narración de esta pelí-cula es vertiginosa en oca-siones, en otras opta por elpreciosismo de algunas to-mas pero nada tan intere-sante ni destacado. Eldirector Chad Stahelski, esun experto en stunts y natu-ralmente aprovecha muybien ese recurso, vemos mu-chas secuencias de acción ala Chuck Norris pero con unafotografía muy oscura. Des-carada violencia aunque conpocos chorros de sangre.

El Mensaje que resalta enalgunas partes de la películaes el interés por los animales,los enemigos rusos de EUA yel vengador que todo lopuede, muy a la manera in-sisto, de películas que prota-gonizaron Chuck Norris,Stalone o Michael Douglas,del todopoderoso soldado oasesino. No podemos desta-car mucho de este filme,porque no lo hay. La inter-pretación de Reeves roza enlo ordinario y los otros per-sonajes simplemente no des-tacan o están muy pocodesarrollados.

En fin, esperemos queReeves vuelva en papelesmemorables como en Myown private Idaho, Matrix yaun The Devil's Advocate,porque su regreso no ha te-nido nada de triunfal.

Ayer fui a ver la pelí-cula "La dictaduraperfecta", el tema

suena muy fuerte, como unaprotesta o una critica bas-tante directa contra el siste-ma que todos conocemos.De entrada me pregunto,¿como es que el mismo sis-tema permitió esa película?

Ningún criminal aceptaríacon una sonrisa que anun-cien sus fechorías, y menos lopermitiría si pudiese evitarlo.El sistema que la misma pelí-cula describe podría haberevitado su producción o porlo menos su distribución, pe-ro no, ahí esta anunciándosepor todos lados y todo mun-do viéndola.

Ya entrado en la película,las escenas, las situaciones,los métodos que se muestranson tal como muchos losimaginamos, tal vez se que-dan cortos pero en generaltodos sabemos que así es, sinembargo el horror, la triste-za y la desesperanza que nosinvade al leer cualquier pe-riódico de la vida real y vernoticias como la mas recien-te en que son los policías los

que matan estudiantes de lamanera mas terrible, esas si-tuaciones terribles aquí en lapelícula nos causan gracia,nos reímos, es una banaliza-cion total del sistema podri-do que nos domina, lejos decriticar mas bien parece quela película esta enfocada enque todos aceptemos nues-tra triste realidad y termine-mos saliendo con unasonrisa.

Por ultimo la película noofrece un rayo de esperanza,ni una propuesta siquiera,normalmente en las películasal final ganan los buenos ylos malos reciben su mereci-do, pero aquí no, aquí losmalos ganan de la maneramas vil, y los buenos termi-nan agradeciendo al malopor ser tan "bueno", que pa-radoja.

I hope I will be forgiven alittle self-indulgence, andsomething of a travelogue

– British Mensa is honoured,and excited, to have the an-nual meeting of the Interna-tional Board of Directors(IBD) taking place within itsshores for the first time sinceMensa’s Golden Anniversaryin 1996.

The British Mensa AnnualGathering has been schedu-led to take place 19th to22nd September, the wee-kend before the IBD confe-rence, and we expect to behosting a large contingent ofinternational members. TheAG itself is situated in Car-diff, the capital city of Wales,and the organisers are offe-ring a packed schedule ofevents.

The gathering has aDoctor Who theme. TheDoctor Who Special InterestGroup is one of British Men-sa’s oldest and most popularSIGs and, being recognisedinternationally, also attractsits share of internationalmembers. Doctor Who is fil-med primarily at the BBCstudios in Cardiff and onlocation in and around thecity. As fans will know, Cardiffis also the home of the Doc-tor Who spinoff Torchwood.A tour of memorable DoctorWho locations is planned aswell as a Gala Dinner atwhich members are encou-raged to come either ‘dres-

sed to impress’ or in DoctorWho costume. My 10-year-old daughter, one of ouryounger members, is alreadyplanning her outfit!

A series of lecturesand workshops will be heldincluding ‘How to live to 110’,‘The Psychology and Socio-logy of Unexplained Pheno-mena’, and ‘Welsh Languageand Culture’. Games are wellrepresented, with the BritishMensa 2014 Poker Tourna-ment, Mensa Connectionsand Bridge championships, aswell as less formal games ac-tivities.

There will be a whiskytasting and a traditional Bri-tish pub crawl on offer, aswell as day trips to places ofinterest.

Those interested inthe management and admi-nistration of Mensa may wishto attend the Annual Gene-ral Meeting of British Mensa,or the Open Forum to dis-cuss society matters with theBoard of Directors. Memberswill also have the opportu-nity to meet some of themembers of the ShadowBoard, comprising membersaged 13-18, who offer ideas,suggestions and feedback forconsideration by the mainBoard, whilst also runningTeenSIG and producing itsnewsletter.

Attendees can con-clude their weekend by par-ticipating in, or spectating at,

this year’s Mensa GolfChampionship.

For international delega-tes and visitors there is alsothe option of travelling toOxford, the birthplace ofMensa. Mensa was foundedon 1st October 1946 by LanceWare and Roland Berrill at12, St John Street, Oxford.

Coincidentally, my sis-ter (another Mensa member– it runs in the family) livedthere in the 80s when a stu-dent, and at that time thehouse boasted a yellow pla-que commemorating Men-sa’s origins (pictured onp02). Sadly, the plaque wasremoved and discarded bythe property’s new ownerswho did not want to be dis-turbed by sightseers photo-graphing their house, but it’sstill worth a visit to see whe-re our Society began. As forthe plaque – it was rescuedby some members and nowresides in the British Mensaarchives.

Oxford is a beautifuland fascinating city, with itsfamous “dreaming spires”,the seat of the oldest uni-versity in the English-spea-king world. Our two day staythere will offer the chance toexplore this natural habitatfor Mensans. Accommoda-tion options are an overnightstay at Balliol College or, al-ternatively, a stay in a highlyrecommended guesthouserun by local Mensans.

From Oxford, we willmove on to Windsor, on theoutskirts of London, for theIBD conference. Althoughprimarily a meeting to setMensa International’s overallpolicy, the InternationalBoard of Directors’ meetingis the perfect opportunity tomeet and talk to the natio-nal chairmen and other at-tendees from over 33countries. The meeting willbegin with the traditionalIcebreaker party on Thurs-day and there will be an ele-gant Gala Dinner in a formerschool chapel, complete withoriginal stained glass win-dows. The meeting will beheld at Beaumont EstateHotel, set in stunninggrounds near Old Windsor,so there are plenty of exci-ting things to do and see inthe vicinity.

I trust that I will be ableto meet many of you thisSeptember, during this tenday Mensa peregrination;getting to know other Men-sa members is one of the as-pects of our society Itreasure most, and I lookforward to welcoming youto my country.

Congratulations to 17year-old Felix Utamaof Mensa Indonesia onhis recent academicsuccess!

Felix, who attendsSMAK 1 Penabar in Ja-karta, was recently ran-

ked sixth in the AnnualSenior High National Exami-nations in the natural sciencestream. He obtained a totalscore of 57.30 out of a ma-ximum of 60, while the 1st-ranked achieved 58.05.

The mandatory examsare held as one of the para-meters that determinewhether a student can gra-duate from senior high level.The examinations includeIndonesian Language, English,Mathematics, Chemistry,Physics, and Biology.

Felix, who joined Mensaon September 1, 2012, hastwo sisters – one older andone younger - and enjoysreading and playing bad-minton. He’s also active in hisschool’s chemistry club andlast year was president of theschools’s English DebatingSociety.

He plans to continue hisstudies at the National Uni-versity of Singapore, majo-ring in Material Science andEngineering, focussing onphotovoltaic materials. Hisultimate plan is to work inthe research and develop-ment department of a mul-tinational company.

Dutch MensaFoundation –one year onA flying start

On April 20th 2013,the Dutch MensaFoundation was

launched during the AGM ofMensa The Netherlands.The foundation got off to aflying start thanks to a do-nation from Mensa TheNetherlands and the Foun-dation’s 23 ‘FoundingFriends’, who each donated1,000 euro. As the Founda-tion is recognized as a cha-rity by the Dutch Taxauthorities, donations to thefoundation are tax deducti-ble.

Advantages of aseparate Foundation

This separate vehicle alsoenables us to find funds out-side the Mensa circle. Theorganization can be com-pletely transparent on fun-ding and spending tonon-members also. An in-dependent Foundation gua-rantees a long term focus - amanagerial focus - on amulti- year strategy.

Spending moneywisely

The Foundation doesn’tonly raise money, but seeksto spend it wisely. In 2013the necessary steps were ta-ken so that it is clear howand why the Foundationsupports what it does. Fourof the eleven requests for fi-nancial support have beenreceived. The Foundation al-so encourages good exam-ples and best practices on anindividual level via theAwards Program

Awards programIn 2013 the Foundation

started its Awards Program,which we will repeat an-nually. The awards aim topromote and encourage bestpractices in dealing with thehighly gifted, and in so doinginspire others to follow suit.There are three categoriesof awards, and the 2013awards were presented inNovember last year.

A team, whose projectwas an educational programwithin schools for highly in-telligent children, won theEducation category. In thecategory of Work, the win-

ner was a manager of thePolice High Tech CrimeTeam. In the category, So-ciety, the winner was a TVpresenter. The awards gat-hered together many inspi-ring examples of how thetalents of highly intelligentpeople can be harnessed.

FundingDuring 2013, several peo-

ple started spontaneous ini-tiatives to support thefoundation as part of MensaThe Netherlands 50th ‘Gold’Anniversary: a ‘Gold Con-cert’, a ‘Gold Pin-Up Calen-dar’ and the farewell party -including an auction organi-sed by the chairman ofMensa - raised funds for theFoundation. These initiativesare proof of the wide sup-port for the Foundation.

In 2014 the “100 mem-ber club” was launched: anetwork of people whocommit themselves to dona-te 100 euro plus 100 minu-tes for five years. Memberscan choose how they spendtheir 100 minutes, forexample, by talking aboutthe Mensa Foundation at aMensa event, at their office,or any other event in theirown network.

A presentation or an ar-ticle also contributes to the100 minute criteria. So far,the members of the club ha-ve been very creative inwhat they do with their 100minutes – as was to be ex-pected!

PRPublicity wise, the awards

program was very successful.

We expect that once thisbecomes a “famous” nation-wide awards program it willgenerate even more publi-city. This award program isunique in The Netherlands.It is an instrument with lowimplementation costs with ahigh return on investment.

On 1st November we willhand out the 2014 awards.The deadline for nomina-tions is 4th September andnominations (in Dutch only)can be made through ourwebsite www.mensafonds.nl.

Special projectsOne of the focus points in

the second half of 2014 willbe the “grey” people. Thereis no program for the giftedelderly. Some are unable toattend Mensa events, andlocal activities for the elderlyare sadly lacking in appealingto the gifted. Society wastestalented, experienced andknowledgeable people whocan still contribute to thesociety.

In developing this themethe Foundation focuses onbringing parties together,such as an old-age home andstudents from a university.We are starting with a pilotin 2014 and hope this willinspire many others to followsuit.

program will be continued.We will intensify our searchfor new financial resourcesand are looking to developmore expertise in this field.There are still so many pro-

jects we would like to initia-te!
