    The

On May 10th 2016 a very important date was

    celebrated, the International Mother's Day.

Different countries were part of it and such

celebration reminds us of how essential is tocommemorate our mother for being a brave

woman, a fighter protector, an entrepreneur

female, a loving friend and most of all, a beautiful

    angel.

On that day we must make her feel like the only

queen in our hearts by giving to our mother lots of

pure love and spending quality time with her.

Although, each year is celebrated on the second

Sunday of May, we should celebrate our mothers

every single day of our entire life for being our

    guardian angel.

Have you thought how men learned to write? Believe it or not communication

was a bit complex, at the beginning of our former humanity, our people began

to draw pictures carving the rocks and caves, but later they discovered the

vegetable ink and began to translate their hunting victories, war causalities,

and everyday life events, they also learned to send written messages, with

graphic representations. For example, the image of the sun meant one day and

these signs were called pictographs, which it was a primitive graphicexpression system. With these pictographs, we could say that a wavy line

meant water for the Egyptians. The Chinese used to draw an ear between two

doors, this meant listening. And these signs were called Ideograms .

The Egyptians with its fine and artistic strokes called them Hieroglyphs. The

written and simpler ones were called Hieratic, and they were made with ink and

papyrus, this led to one of the most important inventions: the alphabet. The

Phoenicians were merchant people who released the alphabet.

Despite numerous changes throughout the centuries, we still use this sort ofwriting and we can see it everywhere at SENA through warnings signs and

even graffiti that inform or prevent us from situations that may happen.

     Volunteers: Welcome

    to SENA C.I.M.I

    Page 2

Alex and Dawson are voluntaries who came to Colombia to support

the strategy of the “Plan de Desarrollo Nacional” done by the

president Juan Manuel Santos, Todos Por Un Nuevo País, to promote

a well educated country. The Ministry of Education leaded by Gina

Parody is strengthening the English program at SENA, and this

voluntaries support the teaching methods of the instructors.

These interviews have the purpose to know more about Alex and

Dawson lives, and their motivations that incentivized them to come

    to Colombia.

    Jonathan: How are you Alex?

Alex: I´m very well thank you.

    Jonathan: What´s your full name?

Alex: My full name is Alexander Charles Eslick.

Jonathan: Is Alexander a Latin name right?

Alex: Sure yeah, it is originally Greek but it is very common to

    Alejandro.

Diego: What were you expectations about Colombian people?

Alex: I expected that it would be hot; peaceful landscapes, jungle,

pretty women, and my Latin-American friends are very opened-

minded, friendly, relaxed, and warm people so I expected the

    culture to be similar.

    Jonathan: How old are you?

    Alex: I´m twenty-seven years old.

    Diego:Where are you from?

Alex:  I´m from England from a village in the southwest in the

countryside called Marnhull in the county of Dorset.

Jonathan: Apart from English and Spanish, what other languagesdo your speak?

    Alex:  French.

Jonathan:  Did you think Colombia was a dangerous country?

Alex: No I didn't think so. I have a lot of friends that were excited I

was coming to Latin America especially to Colombia, others told

me to be careful, that I was going to be kidnapped. But I think it had

a bad past, but now it depends the area in which you are. It is all

    about being careful and aware.

Jonathan: Are you enjoying you time in Colombia?

Alex:  Yeah, definitely yes, it́ s a big change, new job, new place,

new language, but I am getting use to it. Here there are goodteachers and nice people.

Jonathan: Do you have a couple here?

    Alex: If I have a girlfriend? No, I don´t.

Jonathan: Would you like to have one?

Alex: I mean so yeah, but Santander women are very bossy. I want a

beautiful woman to be peaceful and calm.

Jonathan: What do you expect of the Champions League?

Alex: I've got a feeling that Atlético will win, because Real Madrid

has not played well, but I might be wrong.

Jonathan: Have you watched the Colombian team play?

Alex: No, never a full match, only at the world cup. It's a good team, strong and fast. James is the best in technics.

Jonathan: When you came to Colombia, where did you

    arrive first?

Alex:  I went from England to Rio de Janeiro for one

week for vacation. Then, from Rio I flew to Bogotá with

Dawson and the other volunteers for one week to get

acclimatized and learn a little of Spanish. Then we flew

to Bucaramanga, and I have been for five weeks now.

Jonathan: Have you lived in other countries?

Alex: Yes in Canada for two years, then in New Zealand

    for nine months.

    Jonathan: What did you study?

    Alex: Geopolitics and business.

Jonathan:  After Colombia will you like to travel to

    another country?

Alex:  Yes, I want to keep learning and travelling.

English teaching is a good profession to travel. I want to

travel more in Latin America, especially Argentina.

    Maybe then Asia and Africa.

    Dawson´s interviewJonathan:What´s your full name?

Dawson:My name is Dawson Allen.Jonathan:Where are you from?

Dawson: I´m from the U.S.(United States).

    Jonathan: How old are you?

    Dawson: I´m twenty-six years old.

    Jonathan:What career did you study?

Dawson: I studied economics and romance languages.

    Diego: Where did you study?

Dawson: I studied in three universities. I studied in Montana State

University, Florida International University and the University of

    Washington.

Jonathan: What were your motivations to come Colombia?Dawson: I have a cousin who teaches in Cartagena and I also have

some family members from France that visited Colombia and they

said nice things about the country. I also enjoy to travel in Latin

America and worldwide. I have lived in Mexico, and I had a great

time so I expected it might be similar.

Jonathan: What are your goals being here in Colombia?

Dawson: I want to become a good teacher, I want to learn if I

really became a good teacher, I want to speak better spanish and I

want to hike a lot, improve my physical fitness, mmm and I want a

Colombian girlfriend. Love is a necessary nutrition you must have

around you.Diego: Why a Colombian girlfriend?

Dawson:Because I´m here in Colombia, and I like girls.

Jonathan: Have you been in others countries teaching?

Dawson: No, I have not. I tutored a little bit in Mexico but only

very briefly; and only one on one with two clients. So its been very

and little and different from being in front of a class.

Jonathan: What do you think the differences are between

Colombia's food and culture from the ones of your country?

Dawson: The food is very different, but otherwise things are

mostly the same. Roads, buses, twenty-four hours a day, and cell

phones, and conversations about the weather and sports… and

about girls. I think things are mostly similar, only that I don't have

my group of friends. I do have friends here, but not the closest I'm

    with.

Diego: Will you watch the “Copa America”?

Dawson:Yes, I'm planning to watch it.Diego: Do you like soccer?

    Dawson:Yes, I do.

Jonathan: Are you a shy guy?

    Dawson:Yes I am.

Thanks Alex and Dawson for your time.
