no se puede decir que la celebración para la Virgen de la Concepción es exclusiva del municipio de Ciudad Vieja, a pocos kilómetros de La Antigua; sin embargo, sí vamos a contar de

las actividades que se llevan a cabo, creando un verdadero despliegue de arte, color y devoción.

Aunque durante el mes de noviembre se celebran diversos eventos, es durante el mes de diciembre que ocurren algunas de las actividades más reconocidas. El 7 de diciembre se lleva a cabo el famoso convite – un desfile en el que personas disfrazadas como personajes populares caminan y bailan por las calles de un municipio para anunciar las fiestas – que va acompañado de carrozas en honor a la Virgen María. Esa misma noche, una vez que el convite termina, “La Legión” o “Los 24 Diablos” que han acompañado el convite presentan su ensayo general como preparativo para el día siguiente en que acompañarán al Rezo a la Virgen y se presentarán en el atrio de la iglesia.

¿La Legión? ¿24 Diablos? ¿De qué se trata? Se dice que un sacerdote que cayó en pecado escribió la obra que no solamente hizo fuertes críticas en cuanto a las situaciones injustas que se vivían en la época, sino también plasmó la fragilidad del espíritu humano ante la corrupción del mundo. Otros cuentan que realmente es un mensaje inspirado en la obra de Dante Alighieri el que transmitirán los diablos, que en realidad son 20 acompañados de cuatro personajes importantes: el ángel, el alma, el mico y la muerte. It cannot be said that the celebrations for the Virgin of the Conception happen only in Ciudad

Vieja, just a few kilometers from La Antigua; however, we are going to tell you about the activities there which are a truly spectacular display of art, color, and devotion.

Although there are various events held during November, it’s the month of December when some of the most well-known activities occur. On December 7th, the famous convite happens – a convite is a parade where people dressed like popular characters walk and dance through the streets of a town to announce festivities. This convite is

accompanied by floats in honor of the Virgin Mary, and that night after it’s over, “The Legion” or “The 24 Devils” that have accompanied the convite present their dress rehearsal in preparation for the following day when they’ll accompany the procession – called the Rezo a la Virgen or Prayer to the Virgin – and will perform in front of the church.

The Legion? 24 Devils? What’s going on? It’s said that a priest who fell into sin wrote the script, which not only had strong criticisms about the unfair situations of the period, but also captured the fragility of the human spirit against the corruption of the world. Others say that what the

que los participantes las alquilan).Algunos de los personajes que forman la Legión de los 24

diablos son: la señora, la criada, el diablo codicioso, el diablo del mercado, el diablo borrachín (borracho), el diablo jugador, el diablo mensajero y el diablo chismoso.

Debido a la gran cantidad de detalles, personas y el esfuerzo que involucra continuar con la tradición del convite y la danza de los diablos además de su obvia y significativa importancia cultural, estas actividades han sido nombradas como “Patrimonio Cultural Intangible de la Nación”.

El día 8 de diciembre, todos los fieles asisten a Misa, hacen presencia en la quema de pólvora (cohetillos, granadas y bombas especialmente) que se intensifica una vez ha concluido la Misa, y se reúnen en el atrio a presenciar las danzas de los diablos y de otros 23 grupos. Después de esto, saldrá el Rezo que recorrerá las calles hasta finalmente culminar y volver a la iglesia por la madrugada, y estas actividades concluirán con una nueva quema de pólvora.

Las festividades continuarán hasta el 15 de diciembre cuando finalmente concluya una de las celebraciones más espectaculares en honor a la Patrona de Ciudad Vieja..

devils perform is really a work inspired by Dante Alighieri, and

that there are actually 20 devils who are accompanied by four important characters: the angel, the soul, the monkey, and death. The costumes include brightly colored clothes and details, as well as elaborate masks made with fine woods at the morerías (places specifically dedicated to creating Moorish masks). These masks, besides being heavy, can cost up to Q4,000 each (which is why the participants rent them).

Some of the characters that form the Legion of the 24 devils are: the lady, the maid, the greedy devil, the market devil, the drunk devil, the gambling devil, the messenger devil, and the gossipping devil. Due to the many details and people involved and the exhaustive effort that is expended in continuing the tradition of the convite and the dance of the devils, in addition to its obvious and

significant cultural importance, these activities have been designated as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Nation.”

On the 8th of December, the faithful attend Mass; firecrackers, grenades, and mortars are set off - especially once the Mass is over; and everyone gathers in the courtyard in front of the church to witness the dance of the devils and of 23 other groups. After that, the prayer procession leaves the church and passes through the streets to finally return to the church in the wee hours of the morning, and these activities conclude with a new round of fireworks.

The festivities will continue until December 15th when one of the most spectacular celebrations in honor of the Patroness of Ciudad Vieja will finally conclude..

Si visitas el mercado de La Antigua, sin importar si se trata de un día de mercado (lunes, jueves y sábados) o no, es probable que regreses de la visita con una bolsa rebosante de bondad. El mejor momento para ir al mercado es temprano en la mañana, cuando todo está súper fresco (y las lechugas y otras verduras no se han marchitado por el calor del día), o después del almuerzo, cuando la mayoría de los clientes locales ya han regresado a casa y está menos lleno de gente. Hay un estacionamiento donde podrás dejar tu carro, las camionetas están muy cerca (la terminal se encuentra justo al lado del mercado), y si terminas comprando demasiado para cargar fácilmente, siempre hay tuk-tuks para llevarte con todo y tus compras de regreso.

If you go to the market, regardless whether it’s on a market day (Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays) or not, you will probably return from the visit with an overflowing bag of goodness.The best time to arrive at the market is early in the morning when everything is extra fresh (and lettuces and other greens haven’t yet wilted from the day’s heat), or after lunch, when most of the local customers have already gone home and it’s less crowded. There’s a parking lot where you can leave your car, buses are close by (the terminal is right next to the market), and if you buy too much to easily carry, there are always tuk-tuks to take you and your purchases back.

Cuéntenos un poco acerca de usted.Nací en la capital. Estudié pedagogía y psicología en Austria y viví muchos años en Toronto, Canadá. Mis caminos me llevaron al Lago de Atitlán con el pueblo Kaqchikel y Tz’utujil y en Tikal con los antiguos. Sigo viajando cada año.¿Por qué utiliza el nombre de AumRak?Tomé ese nombre en 1997 al iniciar mi camino como sacerdotisa maya. Soy ceremonialista en los cuatro elementos: tierra, agua, aire y fuego; también soy sanadora de esencias – cuerpo, mente, emociones y lugares. Hago bautizos, matrimonios, iniciaciones en varias tradiciones, viajes shamánicos y curaciones como huesera.¿En qué consisten las curaciones?Trabajo los estados de conciencia profundos a través de la respiración. De esta forma el cerebro secreta endorfinas que facilitan una conexión completa con lo más profundo del ser. Luego, alineo las frecuencias de los chacras y reprogramo antiguas decisiones negativas. Así, se obtienen resultados muy favorables.¿Cómo y dónde desarrolla su trabajo?Acá en La Antigua; recibo en mi casa. Desde el 2002 viajo todos los años a Norteamérica o a Europa. Allá me dedico a hacer ceremonias de sanación en lugares energéticos y también en talleres vivenciales donde las personas pueden conectarse con ellos mismos.¿Podría ampliar un poco más sobre sus ceremonias?Son basadas en el calendario maya. I conduct baptisms, marriages, initiations in various traditions, shamanic journeys, and also healings as a medicine woman.What do the healings consist of?I work on the deep states of consciousness through breathing. That way, the brain secretes endorphins that facilitate a complete connection to the deepest parts of one’s being. Then I align the frequencies of the chakras and reprogram old negative decisions. This produces very favorable results.

How and where do you work?I receive seekers at my house here in La Antigua. Since 2002, I travel to North America or Europe every year. There, I perform healing ceremonies in energy-rich places and also at experiential workshops where people can connect with themselves.Can you tell us a little more about your ceremonies?They’re based on the Mayan calendar. For almost 20 years I’ve been doing them and contacting nahuales. I’ve studied a lot of quantum physics which has helped me to discover its mysteries from galactic to atomic levels. It’s really fascinating.Where do these techniques come from?I’ve learned a lot from other shamans in North and South America as well as in Europe, India and Hawai’i. But mostly my techniques come from my meditations; I channel – meaning that I receive guidance telepathically – from my beloved Angels and Light Beings..

not uncommon to head over to Angie Angie and find more than you expected.

With all the locale’s good vibes, Angie Angie is taking a chance on something different this month: the first festival-type concert which is being called the Tico-chapín Fest. It’s being called this because there will be six hours of music from five groups (from Guatemala – the chapines – and from Costa Rica – the ticos). This should be one of the most interesting cultural and musical exchanges in recent memory and it’s just in time to celebrate the end of 2014.

On Saturday, December 27th starting at6 PM, the Tico-chapín Fest will welcome Maf é Tulà, one of the resident artists at Angie Angie, as well as Carisma de Venus – with a bit of jazz – and Fabrizio Walker and his fusion of rhythms. It’s that wonderful time of year again with the aromas of tamales, hot chocolate, and spices and the sounds of holiday music filling the air.

Once again the Community Choir of Guatemala will contribute to this happy season by presenting Handel’s Messiah along with a selection of Christmas carols. This year is the 11th anniversary of this concert, and it has become a much-beloved tradition for many families.

Soloists well-known to the Guatemalan community – J.J. Hobbs, soprano; Liz Cass, mezzo soprano; and Phillip Hill, baritone – will be joined this year by Jay Bitner, tenor, who comes from the Washington, D.C. area where he is a long-time member of various opera groups. Randy Sonntag will again be the soloist playing the beautiful Trumpet Shall Sound. Directed by Heber Morales, the group will be accompanied by members of the Guatemalan National Symphony Orchestra.

es posible que hayas escuchado acerca de cómo el mercado de Chichicastenango (también conocido como Santo Tomás Chichicastenango) es una de las atracciones turísticas que no debes perderte durante tu estancia

en Guatemala. Además de las artesanías, quienes visitan este municipio del departamento de El Quiché se encontrarán con una iglesia en la cual se llevan a cabo distintas ceremonias religiosas y una plaza que se llena de música y color durante las celebraciones más importantes.

Una de estas celebraciones es la fiesta del 21 de diciembre dedicada a Santo Tomás Apóstol, el Patrón del lugar. Durante la madrugada, el baile del torito y el de la conquista recorren las calles aledañas a las cofradías e iglesia. Las cofradías – grupos o fraternidades religiosas – crean una pequeña procesión en la cual se puede observar la imagen de Santo Tomás sentada entre coloridas decoraciones junto a las imágenes de San José y la de San Sebastián, que le acompañarán durante las festividades. Estas imágenes son veneradas en la iglesia al sonido del tun y la chirimía.

Por la tarde, a las 4 PM, caen del cielo pequeñas tiras de papel y se sueltan muchos globos al cielo en señal de fiesta. Más tarde, a las 6 PM, se inicia la quema de bombas, y después inicia el último recorrido hacia sus lugares en las cofradías.

El ambiente es festivo. Se comparte la comida con familiares, amigos y visitantes en los comedores de la plaza (llamados chinamas) y se disfruta del concierto de marimbas. Esta es una de las tradiciones más importantes para todos – aquella en la que visitantes llegan de otros pueblos e incluso de otros países. Ese día en Chichicastenango, todos se unen para celebrar al Santo Patrón que les provee y les cuida..

You may have heard about the market in Chichicastenango (also known as Santo Tomás

Chichicastenango); it’s one of the tourist attractions you should not miss during your stay in Guatemala. In addition to handicrafts, visitors to this town in the department of El Quiché will find a church where various religious ceremonies are celebrated and a plaza that is filled with music and color during major celebrations.

One of the town’s biggest celebrations is the festival on December 21st which is dedicated to St. Thomas the Apostle, the town’s Patron Saint. In the early hours of the morning, el baile de la conquista and el baile del torito – traditional dances – begin and go through the streets close to the cofradías and the church. The – cofradías – religious fraternities or groups – create a small procession in which a statue of St. Thomas seated among colorful decorations next to two other statues, of St. Joseph and St. Sebastian, which will accompany St. Thomas during

the celebrations. Together, these three images are worshipped at the front of the church to the sound of a drum, called a tun, and native oboes or reed pipes, called chirimías.

In the afternoon, at 4 PM, confetti falls and many balloons are released into the sky as a sign of celebration. Later, at 6 PM, the fireworks start, predominated by mortars. Finally, the images make their last round on the way to their places in the houses that host the cofradías.

The atmosphere is festive. Food is shared with family, friends and visitors in the eateries of the plaza, called chinamas, and the marimba concerts are enjoyed. This most important of traditions is enjoyed by visitors who come from other towns and even other countries. On this day in Chichicastenango, everyone comes together to celebrate the Patron Saint who provides and cares for them..

Con la introducción del catolicismo a Guatemala por los españoles, también llegó la tradición de elaborar una representación del nacimiento de Jesús a lo que se llamó “nacimiento”. Para decorarlo se utilizan diversos materiales que incluyen el aserrín teñido, el pino y las figuras de yeso o barro que representan a San José, la Virgen María y el niño Jesús.

When the Spanish introduced Catholicism to Guatemala, they also brought with them the tradition of making a representation of Jesus’ birth – a nativity scene, known here as a nacimiento. Many different materials are used to decorate it, including colored sawdust, pine needles, and plaster or clay figures representing Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus.

el 12 de diciembre, se celebra la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (conocida como la Virgen de Guadalupe). En ese día en La Antigua, los padres visten a sus niños pequeños en trajes típicos en honor al campesino Juan

Diego quien, en 1531, tuvo una visión de una mujer joven – quien los católicos creen fue la Virgen María – rodeada de luz en la Colina del Tepeyac en México.

Si estás en La Antigua durante ese día, lo más probable es que verás muchos niños varones vestidos de rojo y blanco con pequeños sombreros de paja y bigotes pintados, y niñas con cintas en el pelo, coloridas faldas y muchos collares de cuentas. Después de visitar el altar de la Virgen de Guadalupe en la bella Iglesia de La Merced, (MAP B4), y participar en la misa especial y la procesión que se lleva a cabo, las familias se reunirán fuera de la iglesia para disfrutar de algo delicioso en los puestos de comida (generalmente comida típica y dulces).

También podrá ver pequeñas escenas que han sido colocadas frente a la iglesia para ser utilizadas como sets de fotografía por algunos fotógrafos. Estos escenarios tienen imágenes pintadas de la Virgen y accesorios como marimbas, animales de peluche y comales con tortillas, para que los niños puedan posar en estos entornos tradicionales y los papás pueden conseguir una bonita foto que les recordará de este día. Como dato curioso, la edad máxima en que los niños pueden participar de la celebración es a los 12 años.

On December 12th, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (also known

as the Virgin of Guadalupe) is celebrated. On this day in La Antigua, parents dress their young children in typical trajes (traditional costumes) to honor the peasant Juan Diego who, in 1531, saw a vision of a young woman – believed by Catholics to be the Virgin Mary – surrounded by light on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico.

If you’re in La Antigua on the date, you’ll most likely see lots of little boys all dressed up in red and white with small straw hats and painted-on mustaches, and girls with ribbons in their hair, colorful skirts, and lots of beaded necklaces. After visiting the altar of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the beautiful La Merced church (MAP B4), and taking part in the special mass and a procession, families will gather outside the church to

enjoy something delicious being sold by the vendors in the food stalls (usually typical foods and sweets).

You’ll also see tiny scenes set up in front of the church to be used as sets by photographers. These sets have painted images of the Virgin and props such as marimbas, stuffed animals and comales with tortillas, so that the children can pose in these traditional settings and the parents can get a nice photo that will remind them of this day. And an interesting sidenote: the maximum age for children to participate in the celebration is 12 years old.

Of course you’ll see lots of children running and playing and covering their ears when the bombas start and the bells toll. It’s all part of the celebration of faith for which Guatemala is well known..
