The mood and spirit of Christ mas are very special. People are kinder, most feel greater love towards their fellow man, generosity and giving abound, forgiveness comes easier, and we all feel closer to our beloved Savior. Most of us will have the privilege of actually being in the mission field at Christ mas time only once or twice in our lifetime. It is a unique experience associated with, perhaps, some mixed feelings. On the one hand, it can be somewhat challenging to be separated from family and friends at su ch a fun-filled, happy t ime of year. On the other hand, never again will Christmas have a deeper meaning, never again will you feel closer to our Heavenly Father, never again will it be so special to see someone baptized, never again will you experience such deep-seated joy at serving the Savior as you do as a full -time missionary at Christmas time. You will have some memorable and special events occur which can take place only in the mission field. The members will feed you and lavish much loving attention over “los misioneros” who are so dear to them. You will experience the cu lture and customs of a foreign country at Christmas time  —thus enriching y our “culture bank.” You will feel closer to your companions, district, zone and, hopefully, mission president/wife because they represent your family away from home. You will read the real Christmas story with unusual passion and love for the Christ child. You will feel special love and gratitude for those from home who have done so much to bless you r life. The receiving of a large number of presents probably won´t occur and you won´t mind because you know it is just “stuff”—just a ”thing”. You will learn a whole new Christmas vocabulary much of which will stay with you for the rest of your l ife. You will sing Christmas carols in your mission tongue   and think about those carols in Spanish whenever you sing them in English after the mission. You will attend Christmas concerts and fiestas in your ward or branch and eat exotic, new, and unusual foods. You will experience a host of new candies and sweets   some of which you will actually like. You will teach the missionary discussions w ith more passion and fervor than ever before and testify more powerfully of Christ´s reality and the blessing His atonement brings. When you read Isaiah 9:6, you will understand it more thoroughly and praise God for the special privilege of spending---Christmas in the Mission: “For unt o us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the gove rnment shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Alertness vs. Carelessness

Message From Hermana Dayton

20 de Diciembre de 2015El larín de El Faro

ertness is being aware of what is taking place around me so I can have the right responses. It is exercising myhysical and spiritual senses to recognize the dangers that could diminish the resources entrusted to me. Everyhysical sense has a corresponding spiritual sense. Through our physical senses we can be alert to the physical world,

nd through our spiritual senses we are able to understand the spiritual world. This week we will discuss our physicalnses.

et a strong guard about thy outward senses: these are Satan´s landing places, especially the eye and the ear.”– William Gurnall

ime is a limited resource that is extended only by giving the first part back to God.”

have ever found it, when I have thought the battle was over and the conquest gained, and so let down my watch,e enemy had risen up and done me the greatest injury.” – David Brainerd

A thief can steal in a moment, but the watchman must watch all night. Sin can undo in an unguarded second theharacter which required years to form.” – Charles H. Spurgeon

ow can we develop greater alertness?

1. Recognize that we are in perpetual warfare.2. Realize that our enemy is a master of deception.3. Ask God for spiritual understanding.4. Understand that life involves cause-and-effect sequences.

ow can we apply alertness in missionary work?

-Looking for and praising ways that my companion and other missionaries have displayedgood character.

-Sensing that seemingly harmless activities could lead to disobedience and loss of the Spirit.-Being aware that participation in certain activities and wearing certain clothing could attractthe wrong attention and weaken the trust of leaders.

-Being aware of how your investigators are receiving the lessons.-In the Missionary Handbook it says, “Being sensitive to anything that is out of the ordinary, especially anyone whowatches you closely or asks probing questions.”

esident Dayton and I love you very much. We want you to be alert each day so you will be safe.

e sincerely wish each of you a memorable, meaningful Christmas!!!

ere are 5 secrets to Persuasiveness in missionary work:

A clear conscience- it is important that we have a clear conscience, know we havepented of our sins, and can be examples to those we teach. We are then able to convincehers to repent and come unto Christ. When it comes to convincing others, our lives are more

ersuasive than our words. “We are all missionaries…Wherever we go,e either bring people nearer to Christ, or we repel them from Christ.”— Eric Lidell

The authority of Scripture- we must learn the scriptures so we can teach by them andersuade our investigators to use them to draw nearer to Heavenly Father.

Personal testimony- “You cannot convert people beyond your own conversion.” PMG Weust be able to persuasively testify. Convincing people requires a confidence in our voices thatatches the truth and love in our hearts.

Appealing to the conscience- in order to appeal to the conscience we must ask inspireduestions to understand our investigators and analyze what they truly need. People usually have

wo questions in their minds (1) Why is this important for me to hear? (2) How can I apply it to mye? Our first words should be able to answer these questionso persuade them that our message will benefit them.

The effectiveness of using gracious words- “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoneth salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man”— Colossians 4:6 As we use kind,

ersuasive words, and avoid contention, we are able to bring others to Christ.e can apply persuasiveness to missionary work by:

ersuading others to get friends and family involved in missionary work.ersuading our companions to be strictly obedient.ersuading family and friends to stay focused on living the principles of the gospel.

Writing and speaking our testimonies, persuading others of the truthfulness of the gospel.

esident Dayton and I are very grateful to each of you for the Christ-like lives you have chosen te. We love to hear you teach and testify…persuading others to come unto Christ. We love you

ery much and feel grateful and honored to be working with you as we faithfully serve oureavenly Father.

This past week came with

quite a few miracles. OnThursday we went to a smalltown called Prat de Compteup on the mountains. It has apopulation of 105 Inhabitantsand is about a half an houraway. We visited a family fromEl Salvador. They are a youngmarried couple with a five yearold girl. Samuel, the father andCecilia, the mother have been

investigating for about a yearoff and on. Samuel has alwaysbeen hard to teach becauseof his intense integration in theCatholic Church and ourThursday visited started muchthe same as before. As thelesson progressed conversationchanged to eternal familiesand then a miracle happened.Cecilia and Samuel both

expressed desires to bebaptized and I gave them apractice interview. They borebeautiful testimony of JosephSmith and of Thomas S.Monson. We then invited themto be baptized for thatSaturday. Samuel's mom, Élidawas present for the practiceinterview and when wefinished she said that she too

wanted to be baptizedSaturday Two days later theywere baptized. Élida's husbandis a recent convert and so nowthere are two more activefamilies with priesthood here inthe group. Both couples havethe goal to be sealed in thetemple next January .We arehoping to find a few morepeople to be baptized in theupcoming weeks and themembers are excited to help.

Our miracle of the week...

We recently just found out thiswomen that had been comingto church for 2 weeks is in ourarea! So we met with her rightafter church. First off she hasalready been coming tochurch and coming to almostevery ward activity. So it justcouldn't get better. Well wemet with her Sunday and set abaptism date with her for the

26th of December. Sheaccepted and loved the firstlesson. Well it gets better... Wemet with her again last nightand asked her if she had readthe Book of Mormon. She saidyea I'm in chapter 7! What....We were astonished! Not onlythat she shared with us that theBook of Mormon answers allher questions and than went

on to give us an example. Shecame here to study for schooland that's the visa she appliedfor. Well unfortunately she saidsomething went wrong andthe visa won't let her study...She than explain that it was justlike Nephi. That God sentNephi out into the wildernessand they didn't know why. ButGod had a plan for them to

get the plates and leavebecause Jerusalem would bedestroyed. She says, I camehere to study but that's nothappening and the reasonGod lead me here was to findhis church. Wow. I have neverfelt the spirit so strong in my lifeand someone with such agood grasp of the gospel. It istruly been incredible teachingher.

President we had a greatbaptism this last of Antonio.Everything didn't go asplanned but it worked and Iwas very happy. As westarted to fill up the font thewater was not getting warmIt was starting to get intopanic time but I just said aquick prayer and I had thepeace and calm

confirmation that everythingwill be ok. As the servicestarted miracles started tohappen. The Zone Leaderswent out of the church for asecond and saw a ladylooking at the church signand they invited her tocome in. It was crazy. Wealso had some great peoplegiving talks, some great

testimonies. After the servicewas where some great workhappened. We had somegreat members stay afterand just talk to him and lovehim.

The miracles this week was alesson with Barbara! Barbara

is 74 and probably one of mybest friends here in Spain! Shelost her husband about 3months ago and we foundher as we were knockingdoors one day. She waspractically in tears when wefound her but smiling said,"How did you angels know tocome visit Barbara today?Did God send you here to my

door?" We testified to her thatHe knows exactly who she isand what she is goingthrough. She loves everysingle thing we teach her andLOVED the restoration andtold us she knew it was alltrue. She came to churchand talked to pretty muchevery single member andthen told us afterwards that

she knew it was true.Hermana _______ and I wentto teach her the plan ofsalvation this past week. Wetold her it was a present forher and manuel (herhusband). When we got tothe spirit world I started cryingand couldn´t even talk. Thespirit in the room was sostrong and I knew that whatwe were teaching Barbarawas true. I knew that Manuelwas in the Spirit world at thisvery moment listening to andaccepting the samemessage that Barbara waslistening to. I told Barbara thisand tears came to her eyesand she looked at me andsaid, "Puedo dar un besito amanuel ahora?" (can I givemanuel a little kiss right now?)

I nodded my head and sheblew a kiss to the air and said,"I want to be with you forever

While street contacting westopped a woman whopointed to me and said "I'veseen you before" and I said"are you sure?" She said ofcourse! You are missionaries, you use to come to my house. couldn't help but laugh on theinside because I personallyhad never visited her before.Sometimes people get usconfused with Jehovah's

witnesses. So to be sure wepulled out the Book of Mormonand I said did the missionariesgive you this book? And shesaid yes it's at my house! I wanyou to come by this week andbeing me one in French! Wellwe set up a return visit and surein enough a couple days laterwe showed up to a SHOCK.Naomi, the woman we met on

the street, pulled out her ownBook of Mormon and openedup to the end of Mosiah. Sheexplained that she had metthe missionaries almost a yearago and she had been giventhis book, but for whateverreason they lost contact. shehad kept the book all this timeand kept reading it. Shedoesn't read Spanish well

because her first language isFrench so she has to go slow, line by line translating it. Sheheld the book in her frail handsand said smiling at us, "I knowthis book is true! It's a book ofmiracles, and I asked God if itwas true and he said it was. Iknow your church is true"Utter shock. I know God is aGod of miracles, that he hearsand answers prayers.

my sweet manuel". It wasprobably one of the most spiritual

experiences I have yet had on mymission. When we ended ourlesson by sharing with her aboutthe celestial kingdom and howshe CAN be with Manuel forevershe said, "I don´t have to wait forchristmas. You sweet hijas are mychristmas present and yourmessage is the best christmaspresent I could ever ask for. Iknow it is true! I know with my

whole heart it is true!" I loved thatlesson with Barbara so much! Andshe was right.

This week was my first baptism! It was a very awesomeexperience! It was a miraclehow we found Lizeth. So it wasreally cool to see her finally bebaptized! The service was

really good and it wentsmoothly! There was a greatspirit there like always in theordinance of baptism!! I madecookies for after and nowevery Spaniard and SouthAmerican in _______ wants therecipe. But all in all it was agreat week and I am excitedfor our baptism we haveplanned for this next week! Thearea is doing well! We arestarting involve the JAS! I thinkthat this can be a great tool tohelp the work. We will have 2baptisms in 2 weeks with isawesome! But after that wereally need to work on gettingsome more fechas. All in allthings are going well as wework hard.
