CARNE: MATERIA PRIMA

Beats of Oblivion is an artistic project,
aimed at the creative use of abandoned
places. It involves the collaboration of
artists and thinkers, who contribute with
their work, thoughts and ideas, and try to
recover past and present realities.
It implies all types of ephemeral
interventions, whose ultimate premise is
total and absolute respect for the spaces
and environments where they are made.
On-site creations made in one place, with
that place and for that place.

“Meat: raw material”
This deserted place in the heart of the
city surrounded by liveliness, voices and
urban sounds- evokes boxes of silence
and decadent stillness. In former times,
it was a place where, day-to-day, people
used to work, suffer and dream. Ironically,
the deepest peace took possession of it
and the appeasement experienced in its
surroundings recreates in our minds the
false eternity of those things which seem
to keep out of time.
Waste products remaining from
mass production let us reconstruct the
constant process of development of this
industry, as if we were urban archaeo-
logists. These products are transformed
into remains, into material evidences
of our civilizations. Although they are
apparently dumb and inactive, they always
announce something. Rubble is mixed
with cardboards and labels as well as
casings for sausages and trays for meat
products. There are dozens of bundles
of documents on the floor. Boots and
vestiges that testify the economical
activity in this place. The firmest omen of
the final victory of dirtiness and rubbish.
Every crack is an unknown story.
Every damp patch is a slap against the
“progress” linked to the building in the
past. Every single spoiled surrounding
means a particular decline.
Nowadays we go accompanied
with the desolation and the utter degra-
dation of the production. Traces of life
involve us in a new adventure for urban
explorers easily led by the magic and the
mystery of neglected items.

Carne: materia prima

high afraid that the direct sunlight would
melt the wax - but not too low, because
the sea foam would wet the wings. The
boy started to soar as if he was about
to reach the paradise. The burning sun
softened the wax, which kept together
the feathers and they were detached.
Icarus shook his arms, but there were
not enough feathers to keep him in the
air and he fell down into the sea.
The myth of Icarus represents
the human desire for the unachievable,
the freedom - and the willingness to die
trying to get it.
The mural I have painted has
many relations with this topic. Draw your
own conclusions.
The cold and hard white of the tiles
overcome any other element and the
meat-hooks leave us among the hardness
of the site; in front of these canvas when
you take a brush, the adrenaline grows to
addictive levels.
First of all, this project emerged
with the intention to keep these feelings -
it did not finish the way it was planned. At
the beginning, I thought about continuing
“the shadow of the time” and in fact, the
made murals kept this line of work. But,
by chance or fate, it was pointed out
to me that in one of the pictures of my
work an inscription which reads GOWY
was noticed, and had been overlooked by
me. It is a part of “the shadow of the time
VIII”. This inscription has arisen accidently
during the process.
Curiously enough, while searching
for Gowy on the Internet, it appears that
he is a Flemish painter (1615-1661) and
among his most outstanding works are:
“The Fall of Icarus” (1636-37) at Prado
Museum (Madrid). The myths about Icarus
tell the story of a father (Dedalus) and his
son (Icarus) who were both imprisoned.
Dedalus prepared wings made
of feathers and wax trying to escape.
When both of them were ready to fly,
Dedalus advised Icarus not to fly too
11
a niveles adictivos.
celados. Dédalo construyó unas alas
