Dear Friends and Parishioners of Ascension,

Tomorrow is the national observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Day. It

is the day set aside by our nation in order to recognize and remember

the life and efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was Dr. King who

said, “If the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become

an irrelevant social club without moral or spiritual authority. If the

Church does not participate actively in the struggle for peace and for

economic and racial justice it will. . . . cause people everywhere to say it

has atrophied its will. As a people of faith, we can never be satisfied

with the status quo. We have to continue to strive to make justice and

peace a reality – a lifelong challenge.”

Our shameful times are in need, now more than ever, of prophetic

voices more like the voices of Martin Luther King and Oscar Romero,

the slain Archbishop of El Salvador. We are in need of these voices as

ICE, border patrol and agents of the Department of Homeland Security,

are enforcing policies and practices that separate children from their

parents and families, that drive asylum seekers to even more desperate

measures, that allow children to suffer and die from treatable illnesses.

There is no federal law mandating the sacrifice of one's child for the act

of migrating without the proper documents. This policy change,

effected by the attorney general of the United States in Spring 2018 to

deter migration, criminalized such entries into the country resulting in

forced separations, detentions, traumatized families and lost children.

Government-abetted child neglect and abuse is a scandal, not a laudable

national security plan.

Where are the calls for acts of conscience from our church leadership?

Doctors of the church like Saints Augustine and Thomas Aquinas,

prophetic voices like that of Martin Luther King and Oscar Romero, all

stated and insisted that an unjust law is no law at all. Cannot the same

be said about an unjust policy?

In 1969, the U.S. bishops released Human Life in Our Day, their pastoral

letter on the sanctity of life and conscience. Today this document is

remembered and quoted for its excerpts on abortion and contraception.

Perhaps this document needs to be reexamined and quoted, particularly

in light of the fact that the bishops prophetically wrote about allowing

for the possibility of selective conscientious objection, "without fear of

imprisonment or loss of citizenship" for those who refuse to serve in

"wars which they consider unjust or in branches of service which would

subject them to the performance of actions contrary to deeply held

moral convictions about indiscriminate killing." The bishops

acknowledged "frequently conscientious dissent” reflects the influence

of the principles which inform modern papal teaching.

Archbishop Romero called out all of his people, imploring them

individually and collectively to reclaim their consciences, to resist

violence and to work toward solutions respectful of human dignity.

Each week he challenged fake news and publicly named the dead and

disappeared. He used his Sunday homilies (which were, in effect, his

social media platform,) as a means of prophetic resistance, catechesis

and the formation of consciences. Where are our prophetic voices

today?

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

Mañana es la observancia nacional del Día del Dr. Martin Luther King. Es el día apartado por nuestra nación para reconocer y recordar la vida y esfuerzos del Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Fue el Dr. King quien dijo, “Si la iglesia no recupera su fervor profético, se convertirá en un irrelevante club social sin autoridad moral ni espiritual. Si la iglesia no participa activamente en la lucha por la paz y por la justicia económica y social, hará que la gente en todas partes diga que ha atrofiado su voluntad. Como gente de fe, nunca podemos estar satisfechos con el estatus quo. Tenemos que continuar esforzándonos para que la justicia y la paz sean una realidad – un reto de por vida.”

Nuestros tiempos bochornosos están en necesidad, ahora más que nunca, de voces proféticas como la Martin Luther King y Óscar Romero, el arzobispo asesinado de El Salvador. Necesitamos estas voces mientras ICE, la patrulla fronteriza y agentes del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional están esforzando políticas y prácticas que separan a niños de sus padres y sus familias, que impulsa a los que buscan asilo a medidas todavía más desesperadas, que permiten que niños sufran y mueran de enfermedades curables. No hay una orden judicial que obliga el sacrificio de un hijo a cambio de emigrar sin los documentos apropiados. Este cambio de política, efectuado por el fiscal general de los Estados Unidos en la primavera del 2018 para desalentar la migración, criminalizó aquellas entradas al país resultando en separaciones forzadas, detenciones, familias traumatizadas y niños perdidos. En el 1969, los obispos de los EE.UU. publicaron La vida humana en nuestro tiempo, su carta pastoral sobre la santidad de la vida y la conciencia. Hoy día este documento es recordado y citado por sus pasajes sobre el aborto y la anticoncepción. Quizás este documento necesita ser reexaminado y citado, particularmente teniendo en cuenta que los obispos proféticamente escribieron sobre permitir la posibilidad de objeción de conciencia selectiva “sin miedo a encarcelamiento o pérdida de ciudadanía” para aquellos que se niegan a servir en “guerras que consideran injustas o en ramas del servicio que los obligaría a actuar en contra de profundas convicciones morales acerca de asesinatos indiscriminados.” Los obispos reconocieron “el frecuente disentir concienzudo” refleja la influencia de principios que informan la enseñanza papal moderna.

The Ascension Food Pantry

We will begin distributing on the second Wednesday, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, and the 4th Saturday of every month, from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. If you are in need of groceries, please bring Federal, State or City issued identification, as well as your own shopping bag, to the basement level of the Rectory. If you can help with donations, we are in need of dried potatoes, spaghetti sauce and all canned tomato products, canned tuna, mayon-naise, cereal, peanut butter and jelly, and rice. Thank you for your continued help with the our Food Pantry!
