St Teresa Benedicta

of the Cross

August 9th

Born in 1891 to a prominent Jewish

family in Poland, Edith Stein became

a brilliant philosopher at a young age.

She stopped believing in God and

abandoned Judaism. However, she became captivated

reading the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila and was

baptized Catholic at age 31. She became a Carmelite nun and

took the name Teresa Benedicta in the Netherlands. In 1940,

the Nazis occupied the Dutch country and arrested all Jews

including those who became Christians. St Teresa and her

sister were taken to Auschwitz and were killed in the gas

chamber. St Teresa's writings and her life demonstrated she

was a woman of integrity, following the truth wherever it led

and placing her life in God's hands.

Following the recommendation of the Archdiocese, the sacrament of Baptism will now be celebrated during week-end Masses. Since Baptism is a sign of adoption into the Church family, it is

only fitting that the Church family be present at these events.

Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Readings for Ordinary Time

Riches –This word carries both positive and negative images.

Throughout human history, mankind has been absorbed with a

plethora of images and definitions of what it means to be a “rich”

person. Is a rich person someone who has acquired mammon and lives

a life of luxury or is it a person who has established a good relationship

with God and his fellow man? Are these two visions exclusive of each

other or is it possible to possess both? In today’s liturgy, the Liturgy of

the Word tackles the definition and vision of this indeterminate and

ambiguous word. The human vision and definition can drastically differ

from the Divine and the consequences of that vision are immutable and

eternal. Today’s liturgy compels its participants to reconsider and

reject the vision of the world that centers around mammon and its

definition of “rich”. It suggests that the Christian should expound and

promote the Divine vision in order to acquire and reveal the

immutable and the desirable denotation and connotation of that word.

The Divine vision of the rich requires Agape or sacrificial love that

comes with true Wisdom, topics of preceding weeks.

In our first reading from the Book of Ecclesiastes, the “teacher”

philosophizes over the concept of wealth. Referring to the “vanity” of

mankind, the author uses the Hebrew word, “hebel” which means vapor

or puff of air. In his wisdom, the philosopher reminds all that material

things are unimportant as they are left behind when death comes and

soon decay or fade away. Thus, to the author of this Biblical Book, the

constant struggle by man to acquire mammon is folly. It is not

surprising, then, that the teacher rejects the human concept of the

word, “riches” and places his belief in the Divine who must be feared

and revered first and foremost. It is noteworthy, though, that the fear

promoted here is not terror; rather, it is awe and reverence for God

who has created everything. The vain individual centers his life around

himself shutting the Divine out. He can no longer “fear” the Lord

because the vanity he displays creates a barrier that God will not

forcibly break violating our free will. Instead, the author of

Ecclesiastes advocates a proper perspective by mankind that places

God first and mankind second. Thus, the author creates a foundation

for the riches sought by the Christian who embraces the Gospel of

Christ. Through the Christ, a fissure is created through which

life-giving grace may flow.

In the second reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians,

the Apostle to the Gentiles expresses the Divine definition of a rich

person. Here, Paul directs the Christian to focus not on earthly

mammon, but rather, upon Christ who rose from the Dead and sits in

Heavenly Glory with the Father. The apostle reminds the Colossians

that they have “died” and that their life is hidden within the Lord. Their

destiny rests with Him who shall return to reign. With His return,

their incorruptibility and eternal existence shall also be realized. Paul

emphasizes the corruptibility of mammon and those who seek it while

those who have opened their hearts to God can accept the “riches” of

God. These individuals will have what is truly desirable – “…the new

self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its

creator”. Thus, Paul affirms the “new creation” and the “new

Jerusalem” destined for those who accept Christ as Lord. The “rich”

person is one who imitates agape – sacrificial love. Focus on God

brings unimaginable wealth.

The Liturgy of the Word concludes with the Gospel according to Luke

with Christ, Himself, advocating the Divine definition of “rich”. Jesus

affirms the vanity or corruptibility of the wealth that the worldly man

seeks. Using a parable, the Savior, like the philosopher in the first

reading, highlights the folly of centering your life around worldly

riches. He tells the story of a rich man whose wealth has been acquired

at the expense of others. Luke uses the word “pleonexia” implying

fraud and cheating. Instead of acquiring his wealth in consultation with

God, the man has created a barrier that hardens his heart and focuses

only upon himself. The point here that Jesus is making is clear –

worldly riches are not innately bad but how one acquires and uses

them can be. Christ is emphasizing that excluding the Divine corrupts

and destroys the well-being of the individual. Jesus is demonstrating

where the priorities of a person should rest if they will truly benefit

from worldly possessions. The parable shows that the man has lost

sight of true Wisdom and has encased himself within an impenetrable

wall. This self-centering makes agape love impossible and threatens the

eternal existence.

Holy Mother the Church wants her children to realize the vanity that

the world offers. She is calling all her children to put their life into

proper perspective. She asks us to focus on the Divine and “fear” the

Lord through proper prayer and adoration. She reminds us that the

wealth that the comes from the world is only a tool to use in order to

hone our spiritual welfare and relationship with God. Our actions

should not be focused upon our own private existence but upon the

condition and welfare of mankind and the planet that we all share. God

gives us opportunities to exhibit our faith while we work to build His

Kingdom on Earth. As we have divided the planet into countries and

cultures, Holy Mother the Church reminds us that we are charged with

the care of all. We are one people and one Church created by God

and ruled by Jesus. We must remember the Commandment, “Love

God and your neighbor as yourself.” If we truly “fear” God, we will

not be afraid of Him but we will hold Him in awe and reverence as we

respect His wishes and love each other. By allowing the Divine Grace

to enter us we will discover true Wisdom and true wealth both of

which will be imperishable.

MODULAR PROJECT UPDATE • The roof replacement is complete. There will some additional work to add

venting when bathrooms are installed.

• The dry rot on the front of both buildings has been repaired. Building seams have been filled with foam insulation and wood trim has been installed.

• In the west building, the half wall has been removed & prep work has begun for the future bathroom.
