THE HUMANITY OF JESUS CHRIST All three readings today support—each in its own way, of course—a reflection on the humanity of Jesus Christ and how that humanity played a key role in the drama of our salvation. Although not chosen specifically to coordinate with the other two readings, today’s second reading does in fact carry forward the theme of Christ’s humanity in a remarkable way. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews highlights the solidarity that exists between Jesus and us, precisely because in his human nature Jesus has known the same sufferings and testing that are our own experience. Because he can “sympathize with our weaknesses,” we can “approach the throne of grace to receive mercy.” For the author of Hebrews, the humanity of Jesus was an essential require-ment for his redemptive death, as well as an invitation to us to find in Jesus someone with whom we can identify in our daily struggles. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the eyes of many, the papacy is a peculiar institution. Still bedecked with some of the regalia of medieval princes, contemporary popes have worked to define their role in ways that give them influence over the world both within and outside the Church. The trappings of royalty, never really a good fit for the successors of Peter, could ren-der a pope distant and irrelevant. On the other hand, the tendency of many to think of the pope as if he were the CEO of a modern corporation is also inaccurate. St. Gregory the Great, himself a pope, first called the pope “the servant of the servants of God.” He is “first among equals” among other bishops, who by tradition exercise significant authority within their own dioceses, not depending on the pope’s authority. This arrangement often puzzles those accustomed to a top-to-bottom “chain of com-mand.” History has seen popes of many styles, but most strive to live up to Gregory’s definition. Perhaps today’s Gospel puts it all into the best perspective: “Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.” Pray for the pope this week. —James

—Fray Gilberto CavazosGlz, OFM, Copyright © J. ANNA’S JOURNAL

Anna called. She’d dropped by the supermarket to choose a bou-quet of roses. She saw an older woman standing nearby, just watching. “So cheap!” Anna was thinking. “Hard to pick, isn’t it?” “Oh,” said the woman, “too expensive. I just come to look . . . so beautiful.” She was grateful just to look at flowers she couldn’t buy! I said, “What did you do?” Anna said, “I divided my bouquet and said, ‘Please share these with me.’ ” I’m so grateful for all God’s blessings, but if others don’t have food, a roof over their heads, work, health, and friendship, then gratitude is simply the door to the next step. I can walk through it, sharing what I have with those who have not, or I can close the door. Then I’m trapped in dead-end complacency. Jim and I are going to sit down tonight; it’s time to review our giving again. Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Year of Faith—Open the doors to Christ My dear brothers and sisters, We are eager to begin our Year of Faith, a sacred time our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has set aside for us to rein-vigorate our faith. October 11th remembered the 50th anniver-sary opening of the Second Vatican Council in October 1962. At that time, Pope John XXIII asked us to open the windows of the church – a Spirit of Renewal aggiornamento. And now our present Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI has asked us to open the doors of our Diocese, Parishes, Institutions, homes and hearts to the Year of Faith. We are asked to go deeper into the life giving well of living water to draw our spiritual water to quench our thirst and the thirst of others for Christ. Thus, I urge you to use all of the means our diocese and the United States Conference of Bishops and the Vatican will of-fer to experience and to live fully our special time with God and one another.

May God bless us all, Bishop Richard J. Garcia, D.D.

Family Faith Formation

October is the month of the Rosary. Children in the Family Faith Formation Program will learn to recite the prayers of the Rosary this month.

Why do Catholics pray the Rosary? In the early Church, monks led services with a Latin recitation of the Psalms called, “The Psalter.” But most people couldn’t read or write Latin, so the “Our Father” prayer was substituted so that people

could easily pray together. Tradition holds that St. Dominic combined the Our Father and Hail Mary prayers with meditations on the mysteries of our faith into the rosary we know today. So the rosary makes it easy for us to pray together and to focus on Jesus’ life and glory. “Taken from Partners in Faith.”

Other Happenings in our Program We are collecting cans of food for our food drive. All cans may be dropped in bins by the sign-in table in the Parish Hall. 10/27 and 10/31 children may wear their costumes to class.
