Connectives are words which join (connect) parts of a sentence

or a paragraph together.  Different connectives work in different ways.

CONNECTIVES

JOINING SENTENCES INTO PARAGRAPHS:

These go at the start of sentences to show that the

ideas carry on from one sentence into the next.  Here is

an example for you to look at:

Miss Smith had planned lots of hard work for her Year 9

class to do.  On the other hand, if they were good and

worked hard, she might let them off with a bit of a rest

on a Friday afternoon.  Surely that would encourage

them to work hard during the rest of the week.

FACILITADOR: BELKYS E. MEZA E.

See if you can underline the connectives in

the next part of the paragraph.

Suddenly, she realised that the more work

they did, the more marking she would have to

do.  However, they would learn lots and that

was the main thing.  In other words, she

would just have to put up with it!

 IMPORTS-EXPORTS

The buying and selling of goods between countries is called foreign trade. The goods we buy from other countries are called imports and the goods we sell to other countries are

called exports.

As the importing and exporting of goods are subject to a number of formalities, such as examinations by customs officers

at ports of entry and exchange control approval, exporters generally prefer to Transat business through an Export

Merchant House.

PRACTICE

Sample Questions Focusing on Patterns of

Organization Comparison/Contrast

What is the author comparing/contrasting?

Why is the author comparing/contrasting these things?

Why did the comparison/contrast structure emerge?

What are the advantages of...? the disadvantages of...?

FACILITADOR: BELKYS E. MEZA E.

PRACTICE

Compare/Contrast What items are being compared? What is it about them that are being compared? What characteristics of the items form the basis of the comparison? What characteristics do they have in common; how are these items alike? In what ways are these items different? What conclusion does the author reach about the degree of similarity or difference between the items? How did the author reveal this pattern?
