    TheSusquehannaSymphonyOrchestrawasfoundedin1978bySheldonBairandisacommunityorchestraofprofessionalandamateurvolunteermusicians.TheSusquehannaSymphony’shomeisinHarfordCounty,Maryland,nearthemouthoftheSusquehannaRiver.TheOrchestraperformsasubscriptionseriesofconcertseveryyear inaddition tooutdoorandchambermusicconcerts.TheOrchestrahasperformedoperaandballet,aswellasstandardorchestralrepertoire,andisknownforitspremieresofnewworksandperformancesofunusualrepertoire.TheOrchestraperformedinSt.Patrick’sCathedral,NewYorkCityforover3,000peopleinNovember2007,andatCarnegieHallfor2,500peopleinOctober2009.

    Thisyearmarksthe35thSeasonoftheSusquehannaSymphonyOrchestra.Suchlongevitywouldnotbepossiblewithoutyoursupport.Wethankyouforattending this evening’s concert, and look forward tomanymore years ofmakingmusic!

    Music DirectorSheldon Bair is the Founder and Music Director of the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra(Maryland),acommunityorchestraofover90members.HeholdsaBachelor’sdegree fromElizabethtown College (Pennsylvania) wherehe studied conducting with Otis Kitchen andcomposition with James McVoy and DarrellDouglas, and aMaster’s degree from TowsonUniversity (Maryland). In addition, his post-graduatestudiesincludeclassesatWestminsterChoirCollegeinPrinceton,NewJersey.SheldonBairhasstudiedconductingwithWitoldRowickiinVienna,andMarcMostovoy,WilliamHudson,andLeonidGrin.

    Bair teachesorchestrafor theHarfordCountyPublicSchools (Maryland), isadjunct faculty for Harford Community College, is on the conducting stafffor the ElizabethtownCollegeMusic Camp, and is often invited to conductandadjudicateyouthorchestrasandsoloists. InNovember2000,BairwasbestowedthePaderewskiAward forContributionstoSocietyandCultureatthePolishEmbassyinWashington,DC.Inthefallof2007,Bairwastheguestconductor for theFlowerMoundSymphonyOrchestra inDallas, Texas,andinFebruary2011heconducted theOklahomaYouthOrchestra inNorman,Oklahoma.Inthefallof2007,93membersoftheSusquehannaSymphonyappearedatSt.Patrick’sCathedralinNewYorkCity,performingaprogramofPolishmusicwithseveralchoirsinfrontofanappreciative,standing-room-onlyaudience.Inthefallof2009,100membersoftheSusquehannaSymphonyperformedonthemainstageatCarnegieHallforthesamePolishimpresario,performingaprogramofPolishworksunderthreedifferentconductors.

    Putting Harford County on the MapInOctober2011,Bairwasinvitedtospeakatthe6thAnnualMalcolmArnoldFestival inNorthampton,U.K.The invitationcamemore thanayearbeforeandwasduetothefactthathehadconductedtheU.S.premiereofArnold’s9th(andlast)SymphonyinBelAirinMarch2000.Onthe90thanniversaryofArnold’sbirth,Bairwasgiventhehonorof layingawreathatthebustofSirMalcolmArnoldinthelobbyoftheNorthamptonConcertHallwherethefestivalwasbeingheld.AlsoduringBair’s triphemetwithTonyMasters,aretiredhighschoolbanddirectorwhohadbroughthisschoolbandtoBelAiron twooccasions; andmetwithEnglish conductorAndrewPennywhohadconducted the Naxos label’s CD set of all nine Arnold symphonies. TheremaybesomepossiblefuturecollaborationwiththeSSOandthelocalyouthorchestrasfromEngland.MaestroBair’stravelsconnecttheSSOtopointsallovertheworldandareoneofthereasonswhythisall-volunteercommunityorchestraisofsuchanamazingvaluetoHarfordCounty.

    About the ComposerLee Johnson was born in Minnesota in 1961.He grew up taking lessons on piano, cello, andclassical guitar and began composing at age 15.Lee joined the US Army Band as a guitarist andlived in Wurzburg, Germany which gave him andhisfamilymanywonderfulopportunitiestoseeandexperienceGermanyandEurope.

    Today,LeeJohnsonisworkingasaveryrequestedcomposer,conductor,performer,andproducer.Hehasworksthathavebeenperformedandrecorded

    by the London Symphony Orchestra, the chart-topping Taliesin Orchestra,theLondonSessionOrchestra, TheAmericanRockOrchestra, TheCyberlinPhilharmonia,andmanyothers—allunderhisbaton.

    Lee Johnson has recorded and conducted numerous works at the famedAbbeyRoadStudiosinLondon.Hehascomposedfivesymphonies,numerouschamberworks,fourmusicals,twooperas,concerti,choralandvocalworks,worksforballettheater,featureandexperimentalfilm,andhundredsofworksformultimediaandinteractivetechnologies.Johnsonisindemandasaguestlecturer for his creative works and is a frequent speaker and clinician atcolleges,universities,andfineartsorganizations.

    LeeJohnsonhasconductedandrecordedwithworldclassorchestrassuchas:TheRussianNationalOrchestra,TheLondonSymphonyOrchestra,TheTaliesinOrchestra,TheLondonSessionOrchestra,TheAmericanRockOrchestra,TheCyberlinPhilharmonia,amongmanyothers.

    JohnsonhasreceivedanEmmyAward,wasnamedGeorgiaArtistoftheYear,haschartedonBillboard,haswonASCAPandADDYAwards,andisthefull-timeCallawayProfessorofMusicChairatLaGrangeCollegeinGeorgia.

    Our Guest PerformerEmma Zyriek is a junior at C.MiltonWright HighSchool.Shehaslovedmusicsinceshewasasmallchild,andhasperformedatnumerouschurchandcivicfunctions,aswellaswithensemblessuchasthe Young Victorian Opera Company of Baltimore,HarfordCommunityCollege’sPhoenixTheater,andthe Maryland All County and All State Choruses.Emma attended the Brevard (NC) Music Center’shighschooloperaprogramin2010andwillspendsix weeks at the Tanglewood Young Vocal Artist

    programthissummer.ShestudiesvoicewithDr.PhillipCollister,andhopesto pursue a double degree in vocal performance and political science incollege.

    Lee Johnson is a professor of music composition, music technology, andfilmmusicforLaGrangeCollegeincentralGeorgia.Hiscompositionsincludeninesymphonies, twonontraditionaloperas,concertos,musicals,cantatas,chambermusic,vocalandchoralworks,andawardwinningfilmmusic.

    In1995Johnson’sfriend,producerMikeAdamsaskedhim“toseeifitwaspossible tomakeasymphonyof themusicof theGratefulDead.” Johnsonknewof thegroup,butdidn’t reallyknow theirmusic.Overaperiodof tenyears he studied theirmusic and discoveredmuch of it to be improvised,but searched for songs thathe said, “wouldbeflatteredby theuseof theorchestra.”Asaresult,thesymphonywasinspiredbytheDead,butisnotanorchestralversionofthesongs.

    Theoriginalcompletedworkwasrecordedin2005bytheRussianNationalOrchestra,agroupofyoungmusicianswhoJohnsonhadworkedwithpreviously.ThefirstliveperformancewasonAugust1,2008,onwhatwouldhavebeenJerryGarcia’s66thbirthday,bytheBaltimoreSymphonyOrchestrawithLucasRichmanconducting.Thesymphonyasinitiallycompletedconsistedoftwelveshortmovements, each of which, except for the overture and finale, were

    Mozart’spopularoperaset in1600sSpain recounts theadventuresof thelotharioDonJuan (Giovanni, in the Italian translation). Included in thecastareayoungengagedpeasantcouple,ZerlenaandMasetto.InActI,Scene2peasantsarecelebratingtheupcomingweddingofthecouplewhenGiovannijoins in and begins flirting with Zerlina, which angersMasetto. Alone withGiovanni,Zerlinaisflatteredbyhisattention,butafriendarrivesandwhisksherawayanddenounceshimasaseducer.Outsidethepalace,ZerlinabegsMasettotoforgiveherapparentinfidelity(“Beat,obeatme,sweetMasetto”).LaterintheactGiovannicontinuesflirtingwithZerlinaandnumerousotherwomen.

    In Act II, Scene 1, knowing Giovanni’s true nature, Masetto enters with abandofarmedpeasantsintendingtopunishGiovanni.DressedinadisguiseGiovannigivesthegroupfalseinformation,sendingthemoff.Masettoremainsbehindand isbeatenbyGiovanni.Zerlinaarrivesandsweetly tends toherfiancé(“You’llsee,dearone”).

    CzarAlexander I hadcommissioned thebuildingof theCathedral ofChristtheSaviorinMoscowtocommemoratethedefeatofNapoleonin1812andin1880thechurchwasnearingcompletion.In1881,the25thanniversaryofAlexanderIIwouldbeobserved,andthe1882MoscowExhibitionofArtsandIndustrywasbeingplanned.ItwassuggestedthatTchaikovskywriteagrandcommemorativepieceforuseinsomeofthefestivities.Hebeganworkingonwhatwouldbecome1812 OvertureinOctober1880andfinisheditsixweekslater.

    Althoughconceivedtobeperformedoutdoorswithabrassbandaddedtothefinale,thecathedralbellsandallotherMoscowdowntownchurchbellspealing,and live cannonfirewritten into thescore, theworknever sawanoutdoorperformance.Thefirstperformancewasindoorsin1882,withconventionalinstrumentation.In1891TchaikovskyvisitedtheUnitedStatesandconductedthepieceatthededicationofCarnegieHallinNewYorkCity.

    Tchaikovskydidn’tlikethepiece.Hetoldafriendthathewas“notaconcocteroffestivalpieces”andthepiecewouldbe“veryloudandnoisy,but[without]artisticmerit,becauseIwroteitwithoutwarmthandwithoutlove.”Ironically,itbecameoneofhismostperformedandeventuallyrecordedworksthatmadehisestateverywealthy.     WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECTWith advancements in battlefield medicine and body armor, an unprecedented percentage of American soldiers are surviving severe injuries. These service members are returning home

    from the battlefield alive, but facing major challenges.

    The Wounded Warrior Project, begun as a small program to provide comfort items to wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, now serves thousands of these brave individuals as they recover and transition back to civilian life.
