A Message from Fr. Bill Hoffman Un Mensaje de la P. Bill Hoffman

Estimados miembros de nuestra familia parroquial:

¿Cómo fue su celebración del Día de Acción de Gracias? ¿Podemos siempre llevar una “Actitud de Gratitud” con nosotros? San Pablo (I Tes. 5:18) dice: “En todo momento den gracias, porque esto es la voluntad de Dios para ti en Cristo Jesús.” El día de Acción de Gracias es una fiesta familiar para nosotros, para el país, pero San Pablo dice que debe ser una expresión integral de nuestra vida espiritual. ¿No es verdad que la actitud de gratitud lleva a la alegría? Practicándola nos permite ver cada momento como regalo, oportunidades envueltas en gratitud. Siempre recordando que Dios Padre es el Dador-de-Dones. Acción de Gracias …compartimos pavo y

football con amigos y familia, y espero que dimos las gracias por las bendiciones en nuestras vidas. Espero que también fuera una oportunidad más para llevar una vida de gratitud. Domingo, 3 de diciembre, primer domingo del Adviento, entramos en un nuevo año litúrgico. El Ciclo “B” del Leccionario enfoque el Evangelio de Marcos, el más viejo y corto de los 4 evangelios. Adviento nos recuerda de la promesa del Señor a volver en su Gloria, y luego no prepara a celebrar su nacimiento como niño en Belén. Nuestra corta jornada de Adviento también nos presenta dos grandes celebraciones de la Virgen María: el 8 de diciembre La Inmaculada Concepción, y el 12 es Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. La comunidad Hispana celebra la Novena de Navidad con Las Posadas, acompañando a José y María en su búsqueda de “un posada”. LAUDATO SI Es una encíclica, un documento con la firma del Papa Francisco; dio una copia a nuestro presidente ..pero sobre todo es un mensaje para nosotros Católicos. El sub-título es “Cuidando nuestra casa común”. Lo más probable es que no es un libro que uno se siente y lee en una noche. ¿No sería posible que lo l eemos y estudiamos como grupo? ¿Creo que sí. Hay seis capítulos; podemos reunirnos seis veces para ‘estudiar’ cada capítulo, y luego ver cuáles acciones podamos proponer para nuestra vida personal y como

parroquia?

Dear members of our parish family: How was your Thanksgiving celebration? Can we carry with us the “Attitude of Gratitude” as a life practice? St. Paul (I Thess. 5:18) says, “In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” Thanksgiving is a great family feast for us, for our country, but St. Paul desires that our thanksgiving be more than an occasional thing …that it be an integral expression of our spiritual lives. Does not gratefulness lead to joy? Practicing gratefulness allows us to see each moment as a gift, opportunities wrapped in gratitude. Always mindful that our Father in heaven is the Giver-of-Gifts. Thanksgiving …we shared a lot of turkey and football with family and friends, and hopefully we gave thanks for the blessings in our lives. I pray that is was also a jumpstart to a practice of grateful living. Sunday, December 3rd, first Sunday of Advent, we enter a new liturgical year. Cycle “B” of the Lectionary will focus on the Gospel of Mark, the oldest and shortest of the four Gospels. Advent reminds us Our Lord’s promise to return in Glory and then prepares us to celebrate His coming to us as a child, born in Bethlehem. Our short Advent journey will also present us two great celebrations of Our Blessed Mother: December 8th, the Immaculate Conception, and December 12th, Our Lady of Guadalupe. With our Hispanic community we celebrate the Christmas Novena with “Las Posadas”, accompanying Joseph and Mary as they seek a “place to stay”. LAUDATO SI It’s an encyclical, a document with Pope Francis’ signature; he gave a copy of it to our president …but it’s first of all a message to all of us Catholics. It’s sub-title in English: “On care for our common home”. It’s probably not a book that one sits down in your easy-chair and reads in an evening. Might it be a book that we read together as a study group? I think so. There are six chapters; might we meet six times to ‘study’ each chapter, and with each chapter let’s see what ‘actions’ we might propose for our personal and parish life? With my prayer and gratitude,

Bendecida! -por Diana E. Sturgeon

It has truly been a pleasure to work alongside

the people of St. Philip Parish! However, after much

discernment and prayer I’ve decided that in order

to keep on serving my neighbor, I must first listen to

the signs and take some time to address a few

health issues. It gives me peace to know that I leave

you in able hands ─ Juanita Fiscal is a natural born

leader with a caring heart, and much like myself,

has the humility to learn from whomever or wherev-

er she serves.

Thanks to Sr. Patricia Vanden Bergh’s patient

guidance, I’ve been privileged to assist in many

Baptisms, Quinceañeras and First Communions. As

our mission statement clearly states, we are a

diverse community of Christians; and I’ve been

particularly blessed to have witnessed the initial

stages of the groundbreaking St. Philip RE Program.

This program strives to provide a welcoming and

multicultural atmosphere as one true body of Christ,

one which is not easily deterred by the

awkwardness of language barriers and/or cultural

differences; but strengthened and brought together

by our Catholic teachings of hope and peace.

Thank you for these wonderful experiences and

keep on shining, St. Philip Parish!

¡Ha sido un verdadero placer haber trabajado

con las personas de la Parroquia de San Felipe! Sin

embargo, después de mucho discernimiento y

oración decidí que para poder seguir sirviendo a mi

prójimo primero debo prestar atención a las señales

y tomar un tiempo para atender algunas cuestiones

de salud. Me tranquiliza saber que los dejo en

buenas manos ─ Juanita Fiscal es una líder natural

con un gran corazón y al igual que yo, tiene la

humildad de aprender de quien sea o donde sea

que ella sirve.

Gracias a la paciente orientación de la Hna.

Patricia Vanden Bergh he tenido el privilegio de

asistir en muchos Bautismos, Quinceañeras y

Primeras Comuniones. Como nuestra misión

parroquial claramente lo dice, somos una

comunidad diversa de cristianos; y también he sido

especialmente bendecida al ser testigo de las

etapas iniciales del innovador Programa de

Educación Religiosa de San Felipe. Como

verdadero cuerpo de Cristo, este programa se

esfuerza en ofrecer un ambiente acogedor y

multicultural, que no es fácilmente disuadido por la

dificultad de las barreras del idioma o las

diferencias culturales; sino fortalecido y unido por

nuestras enseñanzas católicas de esperanza y paz.

¡Gracias por estas maravillosas experiencias y

O, Noche Santa - por P. Bill

Diciembre, los días más cortas, se oscurece temprano; ¿ya pusiste “luces” afuera? ¿Luces o

velitas en la casa? Escuchemos lo que nos dicen las Escrituras del Adviento:

1° Domingo de Adviento:

“Estén atentos, alertos” (Marcos 13) Quizás vaya al patio atrás de la casa, mirar

al cielo y ver las estrellas. Además que las estrellas, fíjense en el silencio; escuches esa voz de Dios que habla al corazón

mientras admiramos la grandeza

de su creación.

2° Domingo de Adviento:

“justicia” (2° Pedro 3), ser “justos” en nuestra relación con Dios y con el prójimo; Pedro nos urge “que Él nos encuentre en

paz, sin mancha o pecado.” Este jueves 14 tendrémos un servicio

Penitencial, oportunidad para contacto con la misericordia de Dios. Quizás este Adviento sería

un buen tiempo para ‘desconectarnos’ electrónicamente y buscar pasar tiempo con la

familia y otros, conversando.

3° Domingo de Adviento:

“Enderecen el camino del Señor” (Juan 1). Que nuestras acciones demuestran el amor; el

pesebre es una enseñanza para nosotros. Que las tarjetas y regalos que vamos a dar a otros lleven el mensaje:

“Te amo.”

4° Domingo de Adviento:

“..un secreto..ahora manifestado..” (Romanos 16)

Cumplió con su promesa! ¿Listos para mañana? Ojalá que sea un día alegre y divertido, con familia

o amigos.

December, days are shorter, darkness comes early; do you have your ‘lights’ up outside? Extra lights or candles around the house? Our Advent

scriptures are saying:

1st Sunday of Advent:

“Beware, keep alert” (Mark 13) Maybe a step out into the back yard, away

from our lights, and gaze at the stars. Besides a glance at the stars you might consider the

silence; listen for that voice of God as we gaze at

His handiwork.

2nd Sunday of Advent:

“righteousness” (2 Peter 3), to be “right” in our relationship with God and with our neighbor;

Peter urges us “to be found by him at peace, without spot or

blemish.” We will be having a communal Penance service on Thursday, December

14 at 6 pm, a chance to connect with God. Maybe this would be a good “Advent time” to disconnect electronically and look to spend some time being

present to others and talking.

3rd Sunday of Advent:

“Make straight the way of the Lord” (John 1). That our actions show love; that manger is a lesson in love for us. May the cards and gifts we prepare to

give others bear that message:

“I love you.”

4th Sunday of Advent:

“..kept secret…but now manifested..” (Romans 16) He

kept his promise! Are we ready for tomorrow? Make sure that it

be a day of joy, a day of fun with

others, together.

Advent: Watch...Wait...Wonder - by Sr. Helen Keyzer, ANG

Recientemente tuve una agradable conversación

con Sue Pischke. Entre plática hablamos del

Adviento y las partes que nos llevan a la reflexión.

En este contexto, nos referimos

a esto en inglés como “wonder”

que significa preguntarse y/o

maravilla(r). ¡Le pregunté a

Sue si podíamos usar lo que me

compartió en nuestra revista

semi-anual y dijo sí!

Durante la temporada de

Adviento, se nos pide que

o b s e r ve mos , e s pe remo s y

reflexionemos (nos preguntemos

y/o maravillemos). Ella pensó

en las 7 maravillas del mundo,

en como esperan a ser desen-

vueltas en esta temporada de

Navidad.

¿Qué pasaría si una de las maravillas -- fuese el

Pan de Vida, nuestro lugar de descanso, descansar

y confiar en Dios con todo nuestro corazón?

Preguntarnos, si cambiamos nuestra actitud y

vemos al mundo como bueno y el mundo se vuelve

bueno ─ mejora.

¿Que si una de las maravillas del mundo fuese ─ 7

veces 70? Al momento que perdonamos, el Espíritu

Santo nos ayuda a echar nuestras sombras para

recordar que sin la oscuridad no podemos ver la

luz.

¿Qué si una de las maravillas del mundo fuese ─

Dios está siempre con nosotros, esperando a que

demos la bienvenida al Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo

a nuestros hogares?

¿Qué si una de las maravillas fuese ─ Todos nos

unimos para hacer pequeños cambios para

CUIDAR DE NUESTRO HOGAR EN COMÚN

(Encíclica del Papa Francisco) y ver cómo nuestros

pequeños cambios, cambian al mundo?

Una maravilla es ─ ver como todas las cosas

trabajan juntas para el bien de todos, y

ensalzamos nuestras voces en alabanza a nuestro

Creador.

Recently I had some precious sharing time with Sue

Pischke. In the sharing we talked about Advent,

and parts of Advent that could lead to some

wondering. I asked Sue if I

could use what she shared for

our Newsletter and she said yes!

During this Advent Season, we

are asked to watch, wait and

wonder. She wondered about

the 7 wonders of the world . . .

waiting to be unwrapped this

Christmas season.

What if one of the wonders ─

is the Bread of Life, our resting

place, to rest in God and trusting God with our

whole heart. Wonder ─ if we change our atti-

tude and look at the world as good and the world

becomes good.

What if one of the wonders of the world is ─ 7

X 70? As we forgive, the Holy Spirit helps us cast

our shadows. Remembering that without the dark-

ness, we cannot see the light.

What if one of the wonders of the world is ─ God

is always with us, waiting for us to welcome the

Father, Son and Holy Spirit home.

What if one of the wonders is ─ we all come

together to make small changes to take CARE of

OUR COMMON HOME (Pope Francis’ encyclical)

and watch how our small changes, change the

world.

A wonder is ─ how all things work together, for

the good of all, and our voices rise in praise of our

New Hearing Loop and Sound System Enhancements

Funded in large part by a donation from the Altar

Society, a hearing loop and certain other sound system

enhancements are being completed during November

2017. We anticipate this work will be fully operational

prior to Advent and Christmas of 2017. We heard

very positive comments following a hearing loop

demonstration in April 2017, and so we are optimistic

that the “real thing” will be at least as successful.

A hearing loop is a system that allows a person who

wears a hearing aid to hear voices or sounds from a

person speaking or singing, directly in their hearing aid or

cochlear implant. Background noise is not a problem. No

headset is required with a hearing aid, although we will

have several Loop Receiver units available to help people

who might benefit from a hearing aid but who do not

have one, or who’s hearing aid is not set up to receive the

signal.

For the system to work with a hearing aid, the wearer

must have the Tele-coil, also known as a T-coil, in their

hearing aid turned on. Most hearing aids in use today

have a T-coil, but in some cases it needs to be turned on

by the user or an audiologist prior to use with a hearing

loop. If you are in doubt about this, we urge you to

contact your audiologist. The white “T” in the lower right

corner of the internationally-recognized Loop Sign refers

to the T-coil.

An added benefit of this hearing loop project is that it will

also work in Verbeten Hall, the basement beneath the

church. So people in Verbeten Hall for a parish function

where the sound system is in use, can also benefit.

Besides the hearing loop, this project will also provide

some enhancements to the sound equipment in Verbeten

Hall to improve its operation, and will include a new

digital mixer, drive rack, and amplifier in the church as

well as two new over-the-ear wireless microphones to

replace two of our existing wireless units (as typically

worn by Fr. Bill during Mass) because they are old and

causing us some problems.

Watch for information regarding Loop Receiver units that

will be available for people who do not have a hearing

aid or one equipped with a T-coil.

Gracias a una donación por parte del grupo

“Mujeres de San Felipe” vamos a hacer varias

mejoras al sonido en nuestro templo,

añadiendo “hearing loop” que va a

facilitar personas con sordera y

quienes tienen audífonos a recibir las

ondas del sonido en el templo.

Esperamos tener este sistema funcio-

nado antes del Adviento y Navidad.

Hubo una demostración en abril, y

recibimos comentarios muy positivos; esto nos

hace optimistas en instalarlo en el templo.

El “hearing loop” permita a personas que tiene

audífonos a escuchar las voces y cantos

proyectados en el templo. Personas con dificultad

del oído, y que no tienen audífonos, van a poder

utilizar aparatos para recibir las señales del

sonido en el templo.

Los audífonos más modernos tienen la capacidad

de recibir las ondas por medio del “hearing loop”

…son alambres aplicados al techo del salón

directamente abajo del templo. ¿No estás seguro?

Hable con el doctor que le dio sus audífonos.

Este sistema también va a funcionar en el salón

abajo del templo. Un beneficio extra! Queremos

también mejorar el sistema de sonido en el salón y

algunas otras pequeñas mejoras a nuestro sistema

de sonido. Una vez instalado, le vamos a ofreced

información adicional.

Hemos visto algunas mejoras de especios en

nuestra parroquia de San Felipe. Varias personas

y familias hicieron donaciones para poner ventanas

nuevas en la casa curial. Pusimos sus nombres y

fotos en una de las ventanas Viejas está a la vista

en el pasillo de las oficinas parroquiales.

para aulas en el sótano de las oficinas. Algunos

de nuestros feligreses

recibieron enseñaza en

nuestro edificio funcionó

como colegio católico.

Maura y sus voluntaries

se fajaron para crear

tres aulas, utilizándolas

los martes y miércoles

para la catequesis.

Hace varios años la asta de bandera

fue quitado del parqueo. Una familia

anónima ha donado la nueva asta con su

bandera, ahora puesta entre el temple y

la cera. Está bien visible para todos, y

tiene su luz para verla bien en la noche.

Agradecempos esta donación generosa;

fue presentado en moria de la familia de

George y Elizabeth Heezen.

Changes and Additions - by Lynn Corroy

We have had recent facility updates at St.

Philip Parish! There were several who donated for

the replacement of rectory windows. These names

and faces of our gracious donors have been placed

on one of the old rectory windows which is on

display in the hallway of the parish offices.

During the summer of 2017,

our Faith Formation & Youth

Ministry Coordinator, Maura

Vazquéz, worked diligently to

create classroom space in the

north basement area. Many of

you may remember attending

a grade school class in this

basement area. Maura and her crew of wonderful

volunteers have painted and carpeted the rooms,

and we are now able to hold

at least three classes of

Religious Education students

two nights per week in this

area.

In recent years, the St.

Philip Grade School flag pole

had been removed from our

grounds. An anonymous donor has

arranged for a brand new flag pole to be

constructed very close to the old location.

For those of you that are able to drive by

the parish or are present for Masses, take

note of the new 30 ft. flag pole/flag! It is

located just to the left of the church doors

at the parking lot entrance. Many thanks

to the anonymous donors - their donation

has a plaque on the pole which may give a

hint to their identity:

150th Anniversary of Green Bay Diocese - by Bill Noel

March 3, 2018 will mark the 150th Anniversary of the Diocese of

Green Bay!

In commemoration of this event, the Diocese has commissioned the publishing of two books that we

hope you will consider for yourself or as gifts:

The History of the Diocese of Green Bay - A 260 page hard-cover “coffee table book” printed

in full color on glossy paper - this book included information on all parishes in the diocese, including

St. Philip the Apostle Parish - Cost: $35

Catholic Diocese of Green Bay: An Illustrated History -

A 48 page soft-cover book printed in full color - Cost: $15

Both of these books were prepared with extensive

Interaction with the publisher from France.

In addition, the publisher is making available to us

a beautifully illustrated soft-cover printing of the

New Testament for Catholics - Cost: $12

These books will be on display in the back of church and in the parish office. Payment may be made in cash or check written to St. Philip Parish.
