SCIENCE LABORATORY

Introduction

For an effective and efficient teaching in science, a laboratory, with necessary equipments is essential. The objectives of teaching science can be achieved only if the students get the opportunity to work their own hands in an atmosphere which prevails in science reaching.

One of the important functions of science laboratory is the deepening of the students understandings that scientific concepts and applications are closely related to their own natural environment. Laboratory should be represented as an integral part of instruction in science. So the laboratory in all its form help in the achievement of the aims in teaching science, which in turn help in the future development I the field of science through the proper use of science laboratory. It is possible for the teacher to realize the following objectives.

1. Illustrations of abstract scientific understanding2. Development of scientific concepts and principles3. Development of Scientific skill, attitude and interest4. To provide training in scientific method5. To maintain curiosity of the student.

Essentials of a Science Lab

1. There should be a demonstration table situated on a platform2. Chalk board. Stand for maps and diagrams and other teaching aids.3. Facilities for electricity, water and gas supply4. Writing table for students filled with electrical power points, water supply taps, gas

burner and sink.5. There should be a room for the laboratory assistant which can also be used as a store.6. Shelves for keeping reagent bottles, equipments, chemicals and apparatus, first aid box.

Importance of labouratory work

1. The achievement of modern science are mainly due to the application of experimental method it is in the laboratory that pupil get a training in this important phase of science study.

2. In doing laboratory work the pupils get a chance for activity both physical and intellectual and they are learning by doing.

3. Lobaratory exercise train them in scientific thinking they develop scientific attitude and scientific methods as a result of laboratory work.

4. The laboratory helps the pupils in the development of manipulative skills5. The experiments done serve as a source of motivation. They are interested in handling

materials and doing experiments.6. The laboratory and the teacher come into closer contact with the individual and help

them to bring out of their difficulties.

Section and Purchase of Apparatus and Other equipments :

The Science teacher should prepare a list of experiments to be performed by the students and a list of experiments to be demonstrated by the teachers. The list of apparatus and materials to be purchased must be prepared according to the details of the above experiments. In general, One or two sets of apparatus enough for every demonstration experiments and many sets of apparatus for conducting individuals laboratory work depending upon the total amount available for purchase. After preparing the list of apparatus, the teacher of apparatus, the teacher can invite quotation to or three leading chemical firms. It possible the teacher must select the apparatus and get them packed in his presence so as to avoid the trouble of sending back unsuitable materials. Enter the materials and chemicals in stock register.

Arrangement of Apparatus and Chemicals

Al the apparatus should be arranged subject wise in different shelves. The glass apparatus must be kept in separate shelves. The chemicals should be arranged in alphabetic order. Apparatus kept in the shelves should be regularly inspected, tested and cleared. The walls of the laboratory can e decorated with pictures of scientist and diagrams of chemicals processes.

Laboratory management discipline

There should be co-ordination between theoretical and practical work. The purpose of the experiments should be made very clear to the students and the pupils should be asked to keep a record of the work. The experiments should be well graded according to the age, ability and intelligence capacity of the students. In order to maintain discipline in the laboratory the following rules must be observed.

1. Students should not be allowed to enter the laboratory in the absence of the teacher2. Every student must be provided with a fixed position and are not allowed to change

their position or to move from their position unnecessarily.3. Reagent bottles must be checked before use and should be returned to the shelves

immediately after use without misplacing.4. Waste filter papers, litmus papers, burnt-up match stick etc, should not be thrown but

should be placed in waste boxes.5. The work should be finished five minutes ahead of the time, the apparatus should be

disconnected washed and replaced in their proper places.6. Any breakage of apparatus should be noted in breakage register.
