The building ofSamsung Sanghoe in Daegu in

the 1930s

Lee Byung-chull (19101987) ofalarge landowning family inthe Uiryeong county came to the nearby Daegu city and

founded Samsung Sanghoe (),

A smalltradingcompany with 40 employeeslocatedin

Su-dong (now Ingyo-dong).

The company prospered and Lee moved its headoffice to Seoul in 1947.When the Korean Warbroke out, however, hewas forced to leave Seoul and started a sugarrefinery in Busan as a name ofCheil Jedang.

After the war, in 1954, Lee foundedCheil Mojikand built the plant in Chimsan-dong,Daegu. It was the largest woolen mill ever in thecountry and the company took on an aspect of a

major company.
