Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)Blepharoplasty seeks rejuvenation of the expression of the area around the eyes.
Each case will be studied to determine which method will be performed: remove excess skin, remove or inject fat and even, in some cases, a brow lift will be needed.
In the procedure an incision is made in the upper eyelid and lower eyelid. Both incisions are hidden in natural folds so the cosmetic result is excellent. In young patients who only have "bags" on lower eyelids an incision hidden within the eyelid can be made.
The surgery lasts about one hour and in most cases it´s performed under sedation with local anesthesia.
The patient can resume activities in 3-5 days and should use sunglasses when outdoors. It should be noted that, as a procedure on eyelids, there are large area of inflammation, some patients may have strong swelling of 3-5 days and mild or moderate for 15 days. There will also be some bruising for a week or so. Smoking is not permitted for at least 2 weeks before to 2-3 weeks after surgery.
Some rare complications of the procedure include bleeding, infection and temporary ectropion (eversion of the eyelid).

The surgery takes about three hours under general anesthesia. Patient´s main complaint is the presence of swollen and ecchymosis (bruise) on eyelids, cheeks and neck. Both resolved within a week. There are rare complications such as injury to nerves and skin necrosis.

How should I feed myself after surgery?Never restrict feeding postoperatively. This stage is very important for patient recovery since it is a sensitive point in cases where the patient has lost a considerable amount of blood during surgery and may suffer from weakness, dizziness, lightheadedness.Before surgery, Dr. Alvarenga recommends his patients consume carbohydrates as some studies suggest that this intake improves healing.
What is lymphatic drainage?It is a type of massage that is indicated during the postoperative recovery (mostly in liposuction cases). It stimulates the flow of fluid through the lymph ducts decreasing swelling, accelerating recovery and healing besides "helping" fat to be rearranged to achieve an uniformly aesthetic result. Dr Alvarenga will tell you if your case requires this kind of massages.
Why does post-surgical garments are important?These items are used to put pressure on the areas that have been modified by processes such as increased pectoral, liposuction and abdominoplasty, among others. The stripes provide continuous pressure on empty spaces that were treated and helps healing. The pressure of these elements must always be reasonable and regularly monitored by the surgeon who will recommend the necessary adjustments.
How important is NO smoking?The patient is instructed not to smoke, mainly by the effects of smoke on the microcirculation resulting in a reduction in nutrition and oxygenation of tissues affecting healing capacity.
When should I go back to the doctor after surgery?It is very important that you visit Dr. Alvarenga for postoperative checkups because he can control the evolution of the process and tell you about the drugs to take. The day after surgery following is extremely important.
Why are pictures taken?In order to have a technical support before and during surgery to preserve as private registration of pre-and postoperative.
Can I use complementary medicines before and after surgery?Never take medication without telling your surgeon. In several cases medication is discontinued before surgery until several weeks after.
What about the surgery day?You are encouraged to present to the medical center with comfortable clothes, loose and easy to install (such as a sweater with front zipper that does not require raising the arms). You should also fast before surgery (Dr Alvarenga will tell how many hours). Avoid wearing earrings, watches, jewelry or nail polish.
