TOTEM: The adverse effects of weightlessness

TOTEM: The adverse effects of weighlessness, is a photographic and audiovisual project by visual artist Ángel García Roldán in collaboration with the artist and pedagogue Gema Guerrero

Anxious to develop a poetic between the environment and the body, my work generates a narrative continuity that always puts the human in nature. My performances, raised the idea of identity and portray the person in a necessary drift involving returning to nature. That's where my characters reunite and are reconstructed. For this reason in many of my projects the mythical is introduced as narration: through their stories, known by all, the identity of the viewer with the speech of my actions and performances in nature come into play.

The project establish a dynamic observation that focuses on the details of the time in nature, to generate a visual discourse that puts the geography that remains with the body and its memory in dialogue

With my pictures I establish a discourse in which I introduce concepts such as 'sublime', 'everyday' or 'memory'. And it is precisely these three circumstances which place to 'human' before its own weightlessness: 'The adverse effects of weightlessness'.

'Adverse effects of weightlessness', is made up of a set of videographies of varying duration and a series of photographs for each one of those Visual Studies about the unstable from the time when the human is with the nature. My point of view is that of the cartographer that delimits the contours of an identity and a history ready to be discovered.

My first pieces of video-art go back to 1998. Made with precarious analog procedures, these videographies had their origin in the interest that raised me the audiovisual media, more than a full mastery of his narrative. Even so, in these early works (‘Someone watching you’ 1999, ‘Garden orchids’ 2002, ‘The garden of the Esperides’, 2002) the image has a documentary source, and appropriate or recorded records built a kind of password-audio-visual that nowhere responds to its origin and in which "everything" represents the plot conclusion. Since then, my work at depth in this format, gaining in recent years more interest and importance than the rest of their productions elsewhere.

Most of my videograficos projects are characterized by their origin performance in which I am immersed in what I call as "States of reality", visions that cyclically revolve around the concepts of 'time' and 'life'. Through these videographies playing different aspects of contemporary video art (video, video-narrativas, video-documentary, video-footage, etc) on board my own biography, in fact they are a video-biografia that keeps a constant pulse with the ficcion of the narrative stories. Itself, complex allegories that built in order of deconstruct my life.

2007 is a crucial year for my career in the audiovisual world. receiving training in the School International of Cinema of San Antonio de los Baños in Havana (Cuba), Thanks to the Scholarship of the city of Córdoba (Spain) and Foundation Awards Angel of Painting (Spain) with piece ‘The Preacher’, 2006.

Filmography1998-2015

Durante el periodo comprendido entre 2012 y 2014, mis proyectos audiovisuales plantean un regreso a la naturaleza, como escenario necesario para contar nuevas historias. Mi videografía más reciente a adoptado definitivamente la corriente del videoarte actual en pro de una videonarrativa experimental cuyo eje central se encuentra en las acciones desarrolladas por los personajes y que introduce el concepto de montaje como parte esencial de ensayo audiovisual. Son destacables de este periodo las obras (Tote Hasen. Las mariposas de Larusa, 2014; Marat, 2014, After Icarus, 2013; The adeverse effects of weighlessness, 2012; y Probablemente Olvidados, 2012)

Durante todos estos años, más de 15 desde mi primera obra audiovisual, he sido seleccionado e invitado a participar en numerosas muestras y certámenes internacionales de videoarte entre los que destacan: Óptica Festival (España, Argentina, Bolivía, Francia); Videoart Festival 100 Kubik (Colonia, Alemania); Proyecto Circo (Cuba); Videoraymi (Perú); Inshadow (Portugal); Bienal Mecosul (Brasil); Incineración (España); Todo lo que amé formaba parte de ti (Dublín, Damasco, Bruxelas), etc.

Algunas de estos proyectos pertenecen a las colecciones de arte contemporáneo de instituciones públicas como el caso de Nárke (2008) Ayto. de Almedinilla o Narcissus (2005) Colección de Arte Contemporáneo de la Universidad de Granada.

Durante estos años también he desarrollado proyectos comisariales relacionados con el videoarte a través de la productora con la que firma todos sus trabajos Vera Icono Producciones, destacando especialmente los desarrollados para Proyecto Circo (2010-11) en Cuba, o el Ciclo de Videoarte Internacional Ultramar para la Muestra de Cine Andaluz y del Mediterráneo. Archidona Cinema (2013-15) en España, Venezuela y Perú.

photography and music intertwine an own meaning. The actions happen between the natural scenery, looking for the idea of the sublime of German romanticism, although the plane in the world is always

behind; behind the human that reappears again and again before the eyes of the viewer with the simplicity of the stillness of the gaze and the faint movement of the body. Objects are the witnesses of a solitude that

is built, is ruined, and disappears in the other and the finiteness of who we are.

Prologue to human perfect is an audio-visual journey through those places of the human that as ordinary life can remain hidden, lurking in them always uncertainty and anguish of a silent spectator. SYNOPSIS

SYNOPSIS

Happening-documentary in which the author is shaved by a Barber engaged the national day of the assault on the Moncada barracks - home of the movement called July 26 that eventually will become the famous Cuban revolutionary movement in Havana.

That on their day they staged the revolution - the so-called bearded-, were not regarded well, years later, to other characters of ALA and pelambreras: the hippies. They considered them adocenados, desideologizados and representatives, in the end, what takes place on the neighboring Empire. This raised a campaign of rasuramientos of beards and long hair cut. The piece reflects this fact, becoming the artist cut hair and shaving razor, in a former barbershop of Vedado, precisely a July 26, day which commemorates the assault of the Monad headquarters in Santiago, start of the revolution.

Far from being limited to documenting the action, Ángel García Roldán shows us that "represented body has its own language and that this body language, as other semantic systems is unstable. Body language is, at the same time, inflexible and flexible in excess "1.
