Ourense receives the pilgrims in the rural village of Seixalbo (1), a set of ethnographic value whose corners and squares retain its medieval trace. A gentle climb leads to Praza Maior (3), the main square which calls attention for its curious inclined floor. If you are riding a horse or intend to leave the car parked in the city, it is advisable to contact the local police (988 388 138).

Hot springs are a great remedy for spasms, stiffness and tired feet. Do not miss the opportunity to try them on your way through Ourense.

If your are Spanish, you should always travel with your Social Security card. If you come from an European Union member country, you should take the European Health Insurance Card. If you come from other countries, you should be informed on possible agreements in health care with Spain.

Plan the stages of your route according to your physical capabilities and dispense efforts, maintaining the same pace in all the sections and making frequent breaks.

Pilgrim's Credentials is the passport in which the various seals of the Way to Santiago are stamped. You need in order to sleep in official hostels and to obtain the Compostela, the council document certifying the completion of the pilgrimage for religious or spiritual reasons. To get this certificate, you must prove at least 100 kilometres on foot or horseback or 200 by bicycle. You can buy the passport both at the Ourense Cathedral (988 22 09 92) and the Association of Friends of the Way (988 39 11 10). Please check opening hours.

Foot care is essential to prevent blisters. Use comfortable, previously used shoes with thick, light rubber sole. Socks should be preferably made of cotton or linen to ensure good perspiration.

Wear light, spacious and light-coloured clothes, suitable to the season.

Always carry a light raincoat which also covers the bag.

Protect your head and eyes from the sun, especially in the heat of the day. Use sunscreen.

Always stay well hydrated and replenish forces regularly with energy-rich foods.

Do not deviate from the path marked. Observe traffic rules and always walk on the left side of the road.

If you go biking, you must use the helmet and visibility vest.

The Mozarabic Way comes from the south of the Iberian Peninsula, connecting Sevilla and Santiago de Compostela while extending an ancient Roman road that linked Merida with Astorga. This is the longest Galician Jacobean Way, and goes through an exceptional natural and ethnographic heritage. This route was kept alive in the early Middle Ages, first by the Visigoths and then under Islamic rule (in fact the name Vía de la Plata comes from Arabic “bal'latta”). Mozarabic Christians re-christianized it in the late Middle Ages, when pilgrimages from Andalusia and Extremadura began.

Pilgrims have in Ourense a unique setting sleeping. Recalling the old Franciscan hospitality, the current hostel is located at the the Third Order's former chapel, with its windows opening onto the history of the city.

Ourense is the first major city after many kilometres along he the Way. So if you want an alternative accommodation you can find both at the entrance and exit to the city. For a restful sleep, the city offers both hotels and pensions in the Historic Centre and the Downtown, all perfectly placed to enjoy the city's lively atmosphe-re but also the peace of its thermal baths.

You can find all the information about accommodations in the Tourist Office or at www.turismodeourense.com

A detour of the Vía de la Plata in Puebla de Sanabria leads to A Gudiña, where there are two routes (one going across Laza and the other across Verin) leading to Ourense, a city that welcomes pilgrims with its important cultural and thermal legacy. From here there are 100 kilometres to Santiago, the minimum to get the Compostela certificate. Why not to choose Ourense as the trailhead for the Jubilee?

Finding this signal means that you are on track. A symbol of life and evocation of water, the scallop shell is the main icon for the pilgrim, and represents the convergence of the many European roads to Santiago. It is used to identify the path, but not the direction; for that, follow the yellow arrows that point it. In the province of Ourense you will also find many stones made by sculptor Carballo to guide yourself. Each one is different. Discover them.
