Inauguramos nuestro centro número once En ceremonia solemne el BRITÁNICO inauguró su décimo primer centro de enseñanza, ubicado en la Avenida Próceres de la Independencia N° 1531, San Juan de Lurigancho.

El magno evento fue dirigido por Cecilia Bentín de Cruchaga, Presidenta del Consejo Directivo del BRITÁNICO, y contó con la presencia de su Excelencia, la Embajadora del Reino Unido, Catherine Nettleton, el Alcalde de San Juan de Lurigancho, Carlos Burgos Horna; así como miembros del Consejo Directivo, autoridades, personal del BRITÁNICO, entre otros invitados.

Los ilustres padrinos de este nuevo centro de enseñanza fueron la Embajadora del Reino Unido y el Alcalde de San Juan de Lurigancho.

Loving London• Luis Eduardo Castillo, Winner of the Scholarship for Excellence 2008-I

When I won the scholarship I couldn’t believe it, it felt like a dream. And the dream came true the moment I left the airport and took my first steps in this land of wonder called London. The city was a whole new world for me and I took up the challenge to get to know it the best I could.

I stayed there for a month and although at first it seemed a long time, now I think it wasn’t enough. Everything there left its mark. From the double-decker buses to the organized underground, from a trip to Oxford and Cambridge to a whole weekend in Edinburgh, from the diversity in the restaurants to the typical warm beer, from a few hours in Hyde Park to a ride in the London Eye,… Every experience was a new adventure, a new amazing adventure that I loved and now dream of living again.

I used to wake up at 8 in the morning and walk through the cloudy streets towards the school and the only question that concerned me was, “Where am I going today?” There were so many places to visit and so few days. I loved going to classes there, where I got to know

people from all over the world. But I loved rushing down the stairs at the end of them even more. I would meet some friends outside the school and go together to the wonders that London had in store for us.

It was really the most marvellous trip of all my life. I don’t mind remembering the times I got lost on the bus or when every place in Cambridge closed at 5 pm and my friend and I had to wait for the coach in the coldest and darkest park of all England. The good memories definitely outweigh the bad ones.

London is without a doubt a completely different city from Lima. I enjoyed every single detail of the journey. I had fun walking around the museums, trying new dishes and making friends of all nationalities. I had fun ice-skating, taking buses or trains to get outside the city and walking along streets while it was snowing. I had fun… doing absolutely everything I did. And for that I will always be grateful to the BRITÁNICO and all the people that made this journey possible. I will always be thankful for having been given the opportunity to take the best trip I’ve ever had.

Travelling to England is definitely one of the most amazing experiences I have had in my life. It was a great opportunity to meet people from all over the world and learn a bit about their cultures, as well as an opportunity to make good friends, which was one of the best parts of being there. Just the fact of having lunch together, hanging out with them after classes and always having a great time made the trip even better. This cosmopolitan country has a lot to offer, things that I probably wouldn’t have seen in any other part of the world. It was pretty easy to get used to the lifestyle of London. In this beautiful country I also got the chance to visit so many different places and see a lot of attractions inside and outside the city, always surrounded by the beautiful scenery. And as for the British people, I have to say that I always thought they were cold, as everyone says, but I was wrong, they were very friendly and always willing to help.

En febrero lanzamos nuestro primer curso Exam Practice en la modalidad semipresencial: una parte del curso se desarrolló vía Internet (online), dando a los participantes la oportunidad de organizar sus horarios y lugar de estudio; y la otra parte, presencial (face-to-face), se desarrolló en las instalaciones del BRITÁNICO.

Los cursos semipresenciales están especialmente diseñados para personas organizadas, con dominio de computación y que no pueden asistir a clases diarias con un horario fijo. Esta modalidad se ofrece además de los cursos presenciales programados en los centros de enseñanza.

ABOUT THE UNITED KINGDOM

How the British celebrate traditional and religious holidays

EasterEaster day is named after the Saxon goddess of spring, Eostre, whose feast took place at the spring equinox. Easter is now the spring feast of the Christian church, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus. It falls on a Sunday between 22 March and 25 April, according to the church calendar.

Traditionally Easter eggs, dyed and decorated or made of chocolate, are given as presents symbolising new life and coming of spring.

Egg rolling competitions take place in northern Britain on Easter Monday; hard-boiled eggs are rolled down a slope, with the winner being – according to local preference – the one which rolls the furthest, survives the most rolls, or is successfully aimed between two pegs! The best publicised event takes place at Avenham Park in Preston, Lancashire.

Easter parades are also part of the Easter tradition, with those taking part wearing Easter bonnets or hats, traditionally decorated with spring flowers and ribbons.

¡Hola hijitos! Bienvenidos a la Zona maldita. Si te gusta el fútbol debes estar pegadazo con el mejor de todos, la Champions league y si te gusta el británico, los tres equipos de Inglaterra la están rompiendo.

Manchester United o los “Red Devils”, fácil el mejor de todos, que cuenta con el actual mejor jugador del mundo, el churro cara de pan de Wayne Rooney y acaban de golear al multi campeón de europa el AC Milan y además se perfila como el futuro campeón de la copa.

Arsenal de Highbury conocido como los “Gunners”, es otro de los ya clasificados a la siguiente etapa de la champions al golear al monse Porto de Portugal por 5 a 0. La estrella del equipo es el español Cesc Fabregas y el payaso ruso Arshavin.

Chelsea “The Blues” del oeste de Londres, equipazo que todavía no clasifica porque la próxima semana se enfrenta al Internacionale de Italia, pero parece que todo está definido, el equipo del marfileño Drogba y el pepón de Lampard pasarán a la siguiente etapa de la copa de campeones de Europa.

Estos tres equipazos también se están disputando el primer lugar de la Premier League, como para no perderse el torneo británico y de paso no te pierdas la Mañana maldita con Daniel “Drogba Gordo” Marquina, Gonzalo “Scholes con papada” Torres y Augusto “Papopa” Robles, de 6:00 a 9:00 a.m. por Planeta 107.7, tu música en inglés.

“Scotland Discovered” at BRITÁNICO San Miguel• Kirsty D’Ambrosio, San Miguel Teacher

A workshop was held about contemporary culture in Scotland at BRITÁNICO San Miguel at the end of January, coinciding with “Burns night”- an important annual celebration in Scotland which commemorates the life and works of renowned Scottish poet, Robert Burns. Students and teachers had a chance to share and deepen their knowledge about Scottish life, language, festivals and the arts. They also had a chance to try their hand at Cèilidh dancing and Gaelic!

Y para dar la bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes de Básico 1 se organizó el Basic 1 Contest, evento en el cual participaron de manera entusiasta demostrando todo lo aprendido en su primer mes en el BRITÁNICO.

El miércoles 17 de febrero los alumnos del curso English for Professionals 9 de la empresa Aspersud culminaron exitosamente el programa de Inglés para Profesionales, siendo el primer grupo que se gradúa de los diez a los que se dictan clases en esta empresa. Jorge Ramos, supervisor de Capacitación y Desarrollo de América Latina, comparte con nosotros sus impresiones:

“Como encargado de Capacitación y Desarrollo para cinco países en América Latina, he reportado a mi director general y la Gerencia el magnífico logro obtenido gracias al excelente trabajo que han realizado los profesores y la parte administrativa del BRITÁNICO en el desarrollo de las clases impartidas en nuestra organización. Este logro se tradujo en una ceremonia de graduación efectuada el 17 de febrero a la que asistieron gerentes, alumnos y familiares de los graduados. Felicitaciones a todos los compañeros que concluyeron el nivel de Inglés para Profesionales, son la primera promoción graduada y estamos seguros de que las otras tres que vienen atrás también lograrán esta meta.

Britain and Peru: Not as different as you may think• Jenny Carrillo, Pueblo Libre Deputy Head of Centre Last month a presentation was given on the similarities and differences between Peru and Britain. Mr. Christopher Barratt was in charge of this session, in which our students learnt that our countries have more in common than people think. For example, looking at some photos, our students couldn’t tell the difference between the Scottish mountains and our Cordillera Blanca, or whether the Starbucks café in the picture was in Lima or London. Thanks to all who attended the session and to Mr. Barratt for such an interesting talk.

¡Papi, mami, hablo inglés!• Melina Espinoza, Profesora del centro de San Juan

de Lurigancho Es el mensaje que los alumnos del Pre-Kids 1 quisieron transmitir a sus padres en una pequeña pero significativa demostración de lo que aprendieron en su primer mes en el BRITÁNICO. Es indescriptible la emoción que sintieron los padres al ver a los niños cantando en inglés con tal naturalidad en tan poco tiempo.

Así mismo, los alumnos del Kids 1 tomaron parte en un evento llamado Aprendo jugando. En esta oportunidad padres e hijos participaron en diversos juegos, en los cuales pudimos mostrar todos los recursos que el BRITÁNICO ofrece para la enseñanza del idioma inglés.

Sin duda alguna, nuestros invitados quedaron muy satisfechos con el avance de sus niños en sólo un mes en el BRITÁNICO, y con la modernidad y tecnología con la que nuestra institución cuenta para un ágil y efectivo aprendizaje del idioma inglés. (Destacaron el uso de proyector, realia, pictures, flashcards, y otros)

Estamos muy agradecidos por la masiva asistencia a estos eventos y también por la confianza depositada en nosotros para la educación de sus pequeños hijos, lo cual nos motiva y nos alienta a seguir trabajando con el propósito de satisfacer a nuestros clientes.

Desde el momento en que recibí la invitación, no dudé en confirmar mi asistencia porque sabía que sería una reunión muy interesante.

En cuanto llegué al Auditorio noté que el personal a cargo se había esforzado por hacernos sentir muy cómodos. Primero conversamos un poco sobre el tema “la hora del té”, luego interpretamos un video e hicimos juego de roles en el que

realizamos una simulación de mozo, que tomaba el pedido, y cliente, que tenía que servir lo solicitado por su mesa. Finalmente ¡a comer todo!, y terminamos conversando por largo tiempo entre los participantes. Fue muy divertido ver cómo socializándote mejorabas tu inglés.

Siempre busqué dónde poder ir para practicar mi inglés fuera de un aula de clases, y eventos así contribuyen a conocer gente y practicar este idioma. ¡Gracias y felicitaciones BRITÁNICO!

Love in the classroom!• Julia Ling, Lima Teacher

February, month of love and friendship. This inspiration led students to prepare a sketch based on a romantic and funny situation. Keeping this idea in mind and with lots of creativity and imagination, B2 and I02 students created and performed sketches. As a result, students had fun while reviewing expressions from class!! The last day of classes, students performed the sketches. At the beginning, they were very nervous but ... they did it!

As part of our activities last month, Juniors students had the opportunity to present some of the practice activities they developed in class. The students worked really hard during all the cycle, sharing ideas and contributing new ones. It is an honour for me to say that thanks to their motivation and discipline they had an outstanding performance. Parents were delighted and proud of their children. Our students really enjoyed working with their group and with their teacher, Angélica Delgado, who did a great job with J02.

Romantic Camacho…• Patricia Paz, Camacho Head of Centre

Inspired by a very romantic month, February, our students were encouraged to apply their creativity and, without any limits on language level, write brief lines about love and friendship. The results? Future poets… with a lot of potential…and fans!

¿Imaginan a la congresista Martha Hildebrandt, al tenor Plácido Domingo, al chef Gastón Acurio, a la cantante Amy Winehouse, al presidente Alan García Pérez y al actor Brad Pitt juntos? Pues ellos y otros “famosos” de Perú y del extranjero celebraron el Día de la Amistad y abogaron por la paz mundial en el salón 102 del centro de Los Jardines. Esto fue posible gracias a la muy entusiasta participación de los alumnos del Básico 1 de las 10:30 a. m. , quienes, además de caracterizar a dichos personajes, tuvieron la oportunidad de usar las estructuras gramaticales aprendidas en clase siguiendo nuestra metodología del Active Learning. Como bien señala Jeremy Harmer: “the more students have opportunities to activate the various elements of language they have stored in their brains, the more automatic their use of these elements become”. Y por cierto, esa es parte de nuestra labor como docentes, ¿no es verdad?

It’s Time to Love• Sandra Reyes, San Miguel teacher

Last month, our students from Kids 2 had lots of fun in class colouring, cutting, preparing cards and decorating the classroom to celebrate friendship and love on Saint Valentine’s Day.

They also brought hand-made clocks which they had prepared at home to practise telling the time in class, and decided to use them to decorate the board along with some expressions: “Time flies”, “Time’s short”, “Let’s not waste time”, “It’s time to love”.

Blind Date at Surco• Eileen Murphy, Surco Teacher

‘So Number Two, what’s your name and where d’ya come from?’ If you recognise this catch-phrase, you probably grew up in Britain or Ireland in the late eighties or early nineties when Saturday evening TV was all about a show called Blind Date with its loveable Liverpudlian host Cilla Black and plenty of double entendres.

Surco students and teachers put on their own version of Blind Date for Valentine’s Day and, in the words of Cilla Black, it was ‘a lorra* lorra laughs’. Students helped the beautiful contestant ‘Tracy’ to devise questions like ‘If you were an animal, what animal would you be?’ ‘If you were a sweet, what sweet would you be?’ and ‘If you were a musical instrument, what musical instrument would you be?’

The three handsome hopefuls ‘Jason’, ‘Terry’ and ‘Stuart’ stepped up to the challenge and impressed us with their inventive answers like ‘I’d be an ice-cream because you make me melt’ and ‘I’d be the drums because I’m noisy’. Infants’ True Love• Claudia Daga, Profesora del centro de Pueblo Libre

Con motivo del Día de San Valentín, los alumnos más pequeñitos, los del curso Infants 2, dejaron abrir su imaginación y creatividad preparando unas lindas tarjetitas alusiva a la fecha.

Tan pronto como se les comentó de esta actividad, contestaron muy abierta y honestamente al plasmar con mucho entusiasmo todo el cariño que sienten por los seres que más quieren.

Fue mucho más bonito aun cuando, ya acabadas las tarjetas, escogieron a su Valentine entre sus compañeros, con lo que demostraron que, más allá de compartir clases o el mismo interés de aprender inglés, existe un gran afecto entre ellos. Estoy segura de que no hay nada más puro y significativo que el amor de un niño… y con esto queda totalmente confirmado… ¡Gracias, mis pequeños!

On February 24th, our Pre-Kids, Kids and Juniors students participated in an entertaining “Open Day” where students used English in a natural way. This was a great opportunity for the parents to see their children working in an English lesson where there was a display of role plays, songs, projects and others.

Gracias a nuestra profesora Fátima Chumbes, que supo motivar a sus alumnos a participar en esta simpática actividad en el Mes del Amor y la Amistad.

Me parece que fue ayer cuando me dieron la oportunidad de estar a cargo del curso de Infants, dirigido a niños de 4 y 5 años. Luego de haber transcurrido algo más de un año, puedo decir con alegría que en febrero se llevó a cabo la clausura

del nivel, en la cual los alumnos pusieron en escena —para

el deleite de sus padres— el cuento Los tres chanchitos en inglés, plasmando así todo lo aprendido durante este periodo. Al final de la obra se hizo entrega de los certificados.

Trabajar con niños es una de las experiencias más enriquecedoras para un docente, y a la vez un reto muy grande. No hay corazón más noble y sincero que el de un niño. Quedarán en mi memoria todos los sábados compartidos con la primera promoción de Infants del BRITÁNICO de Pueblo Libre.

Quiero agradecer a los padres de familia que, conocedores de nuestros logros a nivel institucional, ponen en nuestras manos la educación de sus hijos. ¡Gracias por confiar en nosotros!

Kids contest: My favourite gift• Elizabeth Nuñez Del Prado, Profesora del

centro de San Isidro Los entusiastas alumnos de los grupos de Kids de los turnos Diario y Sabatino participaron en un concurso en el cual debían dibujar y escribir un pequeño texto acerca de su regalo favorito. Los ganadores de este concurso fueron Diana Hermitaño, Christopher Alva, Adriana Yupanqui y Victor Sebastian Aranibar, y hubo una mención especial para Fernanda Vallejos y Matias Rosales. ¡Felicitaciones a todos ellos!

The last day of classes, my J11 students prepared ‘film reviews’ for the most important films of 2009. In those reviews, they expressed opinions just like professional critics!

They explained the plot of the films, the actors’ performances and even prepared their own boards and brought videos to show the remarkable parts of the films.

I was highly surprised by the effort and the enthusiasm they showed in their presentations, not only using the expressions and vocabulary they’d learned but also the way they defended their opinions and expressed their ideas.

Last month, with great enthusiasm, the students of “Kids 2” did a wonderful project called “Having fun with rhymes” as a way of improving their pronunciation. Not only did the kids have lots of fun but also they enriched their vocabulary by saying the rhymes and singing them aloud.

Furthermore, they put their creativity, art skills and English knowledge into practice to make a Humpty Dumpty which made them feel fantastic. I had the great pleasure of seeing them delighted by what they could do as well as taking advantage of technology in the classroom via a PowerPoint presentation. All in all, it was an amazing experience for them.
