La Fuerteventura pre-colonial tenía unas condiciones climáti-

cas parecidas a las actuales, aunque beneficiada por un me-

dio ambiente menos degradado. Con una economía basada

casi en exclusividad en la ganadería caprina, el agua deter-

minaba la supervivencia. La ausencia de lluvias implicaba la

desaparición de manantiales, de los arroyos temporales, del

pasto para el ganado. La dependencia era absoluta: lluvia o

muerte. Entonces, con unos recursos tecnológicos rudimen-

tarios, los Majos agudizaron el ingenio y comenzaron a acon-

dicionar aquellos lugares donde observaban, tras las lluvias,

que el agua se acumulaba durante algún tiempo. Las peque-

ñas hondonadas con un suelo más impermeable fueron poco

a poco adaptadas para que el ganado bebiera, dando lugar

a unas estructuras y a un vocablo exclusivos de Fuerteventu-

ra y de Lanzarote: las maretas. Otras veces la composición

geológica de algunos barrancos permitía otro peculiar apro-

vechamiento del agua. Cuando llovía y el agua corría por

el barranco, una parte se infiltraba en el lecho arenoso del

cauce. Cuando el agua infiltrada llegaba a la roca madre se

formaba una pequeña reserva protegida por el manto areno-

so que evitaba su evaporación. Cuando las lluvias escaseaban

se excavaba el cauce haciendo que el agua retenida aflorara

a la superficie permitiendo su utilización. A este sistema, co-

nocido en todas las islas, se le conocía con un término bere-

ber: las eres. Pero el escaso e irregular régimen pluviométrico

hacía que estas medidas no fuesen suficientes. Entonces se

miraba al cielo y se demandaban soluciones. Por eso muchas

vida. Eso es así, obviamente, en cualquier rincón del planeta, pero las especiales y complejas características climáticas de

la Isla han condicionado una singular adaptación de las comunidades humanas a un ecosistema marcado por la aridez. En

Fuerteventura personas y agua han caminado juntas a través del tiempo en un juego desequilibrado: el agua se esconde,

huye y desaparece; la población la implora, la persigue, la retiene.

estaciones arqueológicas —como la Montaña de Tindaya—

se vinculan directamente con ritos religiosos y mágicos para

solicitar a las nubes que se derramaran, que fecundaran la

tierra, que permitieran la vida.

Colonizada la Isla, las condiciones no mejoraron. Durante

siglos tal fue la preocupación por obtener agua potable que

en el Cabildo se tomaron diversos acuerdos para optimizar

los recursos. Se realizaban constantes recuentos de fuentes,

una palabra que, en Fuerteventura, define a cualquier lugar

donde el agua mana, la mayoría de las veces rezumando

por las rocas. Los escasos lugares donde los manantiales te-

nían más continuidad eran cuidados con celo y regidos por

normas insalvables. Pero, al igual que les había pasado a los

Majos, las pertinaces sequías hicieron que se volviera a ro-

gar al cielo. Y volvieron los ritos, ahora de la nueva religión,

con procesiones y rogativas implorando lo que el clima les

negaba. Tras un curioso sistema de elección, San Andrés

fue designado popularmente para que intercediera en la

atmósfera pero, pese a sus esfuerzos, la ausencia de lluvia

se prolongaba durante años. Hubo entonces que solicitar

ayuda a buena parte del santoral. A San Andrés se unieron

San Sebastián, Santa Inés, San Antonio, Santa Catalina y la

Virgen en todas sus representaciones.

Pero los apoyos divinos no cambian los regímenes pluvio-

métricos. Sirva como ejemplo que en cinco años, a finales

del siglo XIX, Tiscamanita pasó de ser un pueblo con mil

habitantes a tener tan sólo cien. Sin lluvias no había comi-

The weather conditions in pre-colonial Fuerteventura

were similar to the present ones, although favoured by

a less degraded environment. With an economy almost

exclusively based on goats, water determined survival.

The scarcity of rain meant the disappearance of springs,

temporary streams and pasture. The dependence on water

was absolute: either rain or death. Then, with rudimentary

technological resources, «los Majos» became sharper and

started to fit out those areas where they realised water

remained for some time after rains. The small hollows in

more impermeable grounds were fit out so that the cattle

could drink from them, giving place to a structure and a

word only existent in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote: «las

maretas». Some other times, the geological composition

of some ravines allowed another peculiar exploitation of

water. When it rained and water ran along the ravines, a

part of this water filtered through the sandy bed. When

the filtered water reached the bedrock a small reservoir

was kept there, protected by the sandy layer that avoided

evaporation. When rains were scarce the bed was dug

and the water flowed and could be used. This system

was known in every island with a Berber term: «las eres».

But the scarce and irregular rainfall turned this measure

insufficient. Then people looked up at the sky and begged

for a solution. This is why many archaeological sites —like

Tindaya— are directly linked to magic and religious rites

beseeching the clouds to spill their water, make the land

fertile and allow life. Once the island was colonized the

conditions didn’t improve. For centuries, the concern to

get drinking water was such that the inter-island council

tried to optimize their resources in several different

ways. Springs were constantly recounted, and a spring in

Fuerteventura was anywhere water flowed from most times

oozing from rocks. The few places where springs were

more permanent were carefully looked after and regulated

by insurmountable rules. But, as it had happened to «los

da, sin comida la gente emigraba. En ese momento ya la

Isla contaba con una gran red de aljibes, pero cinco años

de sequía no hay aljibe que los aguante. Mientras tanto, los

agricultores majoreros lograron diseñar un sistema de culti-

vo adaptado a la perfección a las condiciones naturales de

Fuerteventura. Las gavias, verdaderas obras de ingeniería

rural, permitieron los cultivos cuando la lluvia llegaba. Tanta

era la sed del pueblo que cuando una gavia se llenaba de

agua se decía que estaba bebiendo. Además de beber, las

gavias han dado fruto a un peculiar léxico lleno de trasto-

nes, de caballones, de caños, de rosas, de tableros.

Y buscando el agua para cultivos y ganados se agujereó

Fuerteventura de lado a lado: en 1993 se contabilizaban

1500 pozos que extraían un líquido a veces tan salobre

que rápidamente eran abandonados.

Hoy, avergonzadas de una historia a la que le dan la espalda,

las instituciones públicas han renunciado a la protección de un

valioso patrimonio arqueológico y etnográfico que nos cuen-

ta nuestro recorrido secular en busca del agua. A Tindaya la

quieren agujerear, los aljibes se derrumban, las maretas se se-

pultan y las gavias ya no beben, se desploman. Ahora abrimos

el grifo y sale agua, limpia, desalada y con controles de calidad.

Pero nuestra dependencia de la empresa privada que gene-

ra la energía para desalinizarla —y derrocharla con piscinas y

campos de golf— es absoluta. Antes dependíamos de que las

nubes se preñaran y nos fertilizaran. Ahora —pagando por

ella un precio astronómico y consumiendo combustibles con-

taminantes para su obtención— dependemos del dedo que

pulsa el interruptor. Sólo la propiedad y el control público de la

energía y del agua, la concienciación ciudadana y la utilización

de sistemas limpios y renovables, nos podrá salvar de que vol-

vamos a las procesiones cuando todo sea inevitable.

Majos», prolonged droughts made people beg for water

again. Rites came back with the new religion, processions

and prayers implored that which weather denied to them.

After a peculiar ballot system, S. Andrés was chosen to

interfere in the atmosphere, but in spite of their efforts,

the lack of rain continued for years. Then people implored

to most of the saints in the hagiography. San Sebastián,

Santa Inés, San Antonio, Santa Catalina, and the Virgin in

all her representations followed San Andrés.

But the divine support didn’t help the rainfalls. As an

example we can mention that at the end of the XIX C,

just in five years Tiscamanita, which used to have one

thousand inhabitants, turned to have just one hundred.

Without rains there wasn’t food, and without food people

had to emigrate. At that time, the island counted on a

wide net of cisterns, but there is no cistern that can stand

a five-year drought. In the meantime, «majorero» farmers

managed to devise a harvesting system which fitted the

natural conditions in Fuerteventura. The ditches, real rural

engineering Works, allowed farming in rainy periods. The

people were so thirsty that when a ditch was filled up it

was said to be drinking. Apart from drinking, the ditches

have given birth to a peculiar lexicon full of « trastones,

caballones, caños, rosas, tableros». And looking for water

for the crops and the herds Fuerteventura was drilled from

side to side; in 1993, 1500 wells could be counted, the

liquid from them being so brackish that they were left.

Today, ashamed of a history on which they turn their back,

the public institutions have refused to protect a valuable

archaeological and ethnographic heritage that tells about

our centuries-old path in search for water. They want to

drill Tindaya, the cisterns are collapsing, «las maretas» are

getting buried, and the ditches aren’t drinking anymore, they

are falling sharply. Now we open the tap and we get quality,

clean and desalted water. However our dependence on the

private companies that generate the energy to desalt water

—to be wasted in pools and golf pitches— is absolute. In

the old times we depended on the clouds to «get pregnant»

and fertilize the land. Now —paying astronomical prices and

consuming polluting combustible to get it— we depend on

the finger that presses the switch. Only the public control of

energy and water, social awareness and the use of clean and

renewable systems will be able to save us from going back to

processions, when nothing can be done.

El mes pasado Fuerteventura presenció el inicio de un

programa pionero que llevaba dos años en gestación: el

Programa de Tecnificación de la Federación Canaria de

Surf, «Entreno Surf», apoyado por la Dirección General de

Deportes del Gobierno de Canarias. El objetivo, seleccionar

a los mejores surfistas de las Islas —menores de 18

años— para desarrollar el potencial del surf de Canarias, y

apoyarlos para que puedan llegar a destacar en el mundo

entero. El programa durará todo el año y consiste en 8

entrenamientos intensivos de los surfistas seleccionados de

cada isla, para ver cómo se adaptan a un entrenamiento y

cómo evolucionan gracias a él. En diciembre se realizará una

concentración final en Gran Canaria, con los resultados de la

evaluación de cada uno de los seleccionados. Este programa

cuenta con el apoyo de la Dirección General de Deportes

—a nivel autonómico—, de la Federación Canaria de Surf y

del Gobierno de Canarias. «Pretendemos educar a los chicos

en aspectos relacionados con la preparación física, los

fundamentos técnicos y las tácticas de competición» —nos

comenta Héctor Medina, director técnico del programa—.

«En Fuerteventura hay un nivel excepcional».

Hace más de un año Gustavo da Silva (Club de surf La En-

tubadera y escuela de surf Olitas) tomó la responsabilidad

—como entrenador insular dentro de la Federación Canaria

de Surf— de formar un equipo de niños, que representara la

élite del surf en Fuerteventura, y entrenarlos para que opta-

ran a participar en este Programa de Tecnificación. El equipo

lo componen 6 chiquillos cuyos nombres ya comienzan a

destacar en los campeonatos. Si os encontráis con alguno

de ellos en el agua podréis disfrutar de una buena sesión de

surfing; son rápidos, ágiles, arriesgados… y los ves cabalgar

las olas con una frescura y facilidad que a más de uno dejan

boquiabierto. ¿Que quiénes son? Aquí los tenéis…

Last month, Fuerteventura could witness the

beginning of a pioneer project that had been

developed for two years: The Canarian Surf

Technification Programme. The aim, to pick up the

best surfers in the island —younger than 18—, to

promote the Canarian surf potential and support

them so they can stand out in the whole world. The

programme will last the whole year, and it consists

of 8 intensive trainings of the picked up surfers, in

order to see how they adapt to trainings and how

they improve thanks to this. A mass meeting will

take place in December in Gran Canaria, showing the

results of each of the selected surfers´ assessment.

This project counts on the support from the Sports

General Direction, the Canarian Surfing Federation,

and the Canarian Government. «We aim to educate

these children on physical training, technical

foundations and competition strategies» —Hector

Medina, the technical director of the programme

says—. «The level in Fuerteventura is outstanding».

More than one year ago, Gustavo da Silva (Club La

Entubadera) got in charge —as a trainer of the Canarian

Surfing Federation— of training a group of children who

would represent the elite of surf in Fuerteventura so

they could take part in that Technification Programme.

The team consisted of 6 kids whose names are already

becoming familiar in championships. Should you ever

meet any of them in the water you’d be able to enjoy a

good surfing session; they are quick, agile, brave… and

you can see them riding the waves so easily and freshly

that you get flabbergasted. Who are they? Here we

introduce them…

Mirko Ivan MandukaEdad: 11 años, 6 surfeando.

Competición: aún no me he dedicado mucho… a

partir de ahora voy a dedicarme a piñón. Quedé 2º,

en sub 10, del campeonato Quicksilver 2009; pasé la

semifinal de Volcom, pero no me clasifiqué.

Inicio: cuando llegué a Fuerteventura Kalani estaba

surfeando con la escuela de surf Olitas de mi tío. Me

gustaba mucho cómo lo hacía y quise surfear con él.

Entrenamiento: depende de las condiciones y de los

deberes, los estudios y las cosas de casa.

Surfero favorito de la isla: Lazy. Del mundo: Bruce

Irons y Clay Marzo.

Ola preferida: me gustan muchas en la Isla.

Beginnings: I started in summer, because there wasn’t anything to do. I joined a course. I repeated the experience the following year

and from that moment I haven’t been able to stop.

Training: I practise yoga with my mother, who is a teacher. I try to surf as much as possible.

Favourite surfer in the island: my brother, Shannon Bohny. In the world: Kelly Slater and Carissa Moore.

Favourite wave: in the South, «La Izquierda del Tigre».

Isla sabe idiomas o dispone de traductores. En un mu-

nicipio turístico como éste, en el que además muchos

residentes somos extranjeros, creo que es indispen-

sable que puedan entenderse y comunicarse con la

población, que al final somos su razón de ser.

Si miramos atrás, no hace tanto que se desarrollaba una

agricultura sostenible, en la que el trabajador de la tierra

tenía un contacto mucho más directo con los consumi-

dores finales de los frutos que cosechaba. El agricultor,

con mimo y dedicación, hacía crecer los alimentos que

después formarían parte de nuestra dieta, alimentándo-

nos sana y equilibradamente.

AGRICULTURA

La modernización y la mecanización generó en los 60

la Revolución Verde, con un disparo de la productividad

que abarató enormemente los costes, transformando el

arte del cultivo en un proceso industrial, donde el mimo

y la dedicación quedaron en un segundo plano. Pero esta

revolución rompía el contacto directo productor-consumi-

dor, introduciendo una serie de variables que afectarían

gravemente el sistema agrícola y nuestra alimentación.

Por un lado, comenzaron a sustituirse los remedios caseros

y naturales por abonos químicos y plaguicidas, lo que a

grandes rasgos ha supuesto una intoxicación desmesura-

da del suelo (exceso de nitratos, fosfatos…), provocando

la contaminación de las aguas y la desertización.

En lo que respecta a la salud, estos abonos químicos es-

tán generando problemas en los consumidores —si no

con efectos inmediatos, sí con efectos acumulativos de

carácter cancerígeno y de trastornos hormonales—. Una

manzana Golden recibe un promedio de 23 tratamientos

químicos en el árbol, más 2 ó 3 inmersiones antes de ser

guardadas en la cámara frigorífica, así como la aplicación

de gas etileno para forzar su maduración justo antes de

salir al mercado; un tomate abonado con productos nitro-

genados acumula 1/3 de residuo de agua, lo que hace que

tenga 1/3 menos de nutrientes (por lo que necesitaremos

comer 3 tomates para tener los mismos aportes nutriti-

vos) y acelera el proceso de pudrición. Los propios abonos

químicos desequilibran la nutrición de las plantas, al apor-

tarles únicamente unos pocos elementos, reduciendo el

contenido en minerales tales como el hierro, el magnesio

o el potasio.

Y a todo esto hay que añadir el inconveniente del trans-

porte. Las distancias a las que se distribuyen la mayoría

de los alimentos obligan a cosechar antes de que éstos

estén maduros y, después, madurarlos en cámaras o sim-

plemente cambiarles el color. El transporte, además, causa

elevados consumos de energía.

Nos hallamos en un momento histórico en el que empeza-

mos a tomar verdadera conciencia de que lo que sucede

en el planeta está estrechamente relacionado con nuestros

actos cotidianos y que en las manos de cada uno de no-

sotros está el aportar soluciones locales a los problemas

globales. Debemos concienciarnos de que las verduras y

hortalizas obtenidas con la agricultura convencional (quí-

mica) en realidad no son más baratas: aunque el precio de

compra sí sea más económico, hay que darse cuenta de

todos los inconvenientes de los que hemos hablado y así,

tura Ecológica, regulada y reglamentada para garantizar

su calidad. La Agricultura Ecológica enfoca la producción

agraria en el respeto al entorno y a producir alimentos

sanos, de la máxima calidad y en cantidad suficiente. Uti-

liza como modelo a la misma Naturaleza, extrayendo de

ella toda la información posible, aunada con los actuales

conocimientos técnicos y científicos.

En Macaronesia, durante unos meses, vamos a dedicar

nuestra sección de ecología a temas relacionados con este

tipo de agricultura; porque al final «somos lo que come-

mos» y deberíamos preocuparnos más por esto.

price is, we must bear in mind all the drawbacks we

have been talking about, and that way we’ll get to the

conclusion that the final price is much higher than the one

we read on the supermarket price board.

The present situation, difficult though it may seem, isn’t

irreversible. So, in view of the problems that industrialized

agriculture has generated, alternative systems of food

production have been developed. Ecological, biological,

biodynamic, natural agriculture and permaculture have

met under the name of organic farming, which has been

regulated to guarantee its quality. Organic agriculture bases

agricultural production on respect towards environment

and on producing enough quantity of top quality

healthy food. Nature itself is its model, getting from it

as much information as possible, and using the present

technological and scientific knowledge too.

In Macaronesia we’ll devote, for some months, our ecology

section to topics related to this kind of agriculture, as at

the end of the day «we are what we eat» and we should

care a little bit more about this.

La ballena aleteaba sus huesos de sal en el espacio fosco. Sobre ella rumiaban airosas cuatro bóvidas cabras, llevando sobre sus lomos el mar infinito. Y en el centro de las aguas, iluminando el mundo desde Tindaya, emergía Fuerteventura.Los volcanes escupían con esmero los gigantes de piedra, fundando en su inevitable caída lo intransitable. A través de las rocas imposibles de Malpaís los cardones asomaban sus puntiagudas armas, mientras Guize y Ayoze, aprovechando este manto mineral, excavaban sus domóticas madrigueras en la falda de la Atalayita.La avutarda chilló en silencio y el Sol mismo se presentó en la playa. La arena derretida por el calor diseminó en su espejismo las líquidas dunas. Chernes y viejas sortearon curiosos a los ávidos surferos. Pero al chocar contra su muro de hormigón, el Sol derramó una lágrima.Prestos, los caballos majoreros partieron de la Casa de los Coroneles para disipar la triste nueva. La noche cayó de pronto y las arañas ciegas salieron a la superficie. La Cueva del Llano se hacía pequeña para los ríos de cemento.No quedaba gofio en la Isla de Lobos. Las papas arrugás fueron de Juan y Gadifer su único alimento, sin ni siquiera una gota de mojo. El filósofo desterrado rasgó con su pluma los malos pensamientos y en la espiral del tiempo la tinta manchó una ola que hundió la isla por su propia inercia.El vórtice arrastró la lava, resoplando las cabras en su vapor mojado. La ballena, y el mundo, y el espacio entero, se desvanecieron en el agujero negro de la prepotencia. Al otro lado, la lágrima salada despertó de su sueño, y en la víspera de su propio entierro, dirigió sus ojos hacia otro objeto, eligiendo su destino.

El 26 de Marzo de 2011 será una fecha que recordaré

siempre... Una vez más en España, el Gran Maestro del Rock

sinfónico —Mr. Roger Waters— desplegaba toda su magia y

poderío sobre el Pabellón de Deportes de la Comunidad de

Madrid.

Habiendo visto ya «The dark side of the moon», en 2007, e

infinidad de macroconciertos de superbandas como los Sto-

nes, Jamiroquai, Iron Maiden, Yes, Police, etc, etc… uno cree

que lo ha visto todo, pero no, que va, ni mucho menos.

THE WALL, la gran obra maestra conceptual de Roger

Waters —bajista, compositor y first liner de los míticos

Pink Floyd—, aterrizaba en Madrid siguiendo una gira de

más de 100 conciertos alrededor del mundo durante casi

2 años. ¡¡¡ALELUYA!!!

Resulta curioso y revelador que el mensaje del disco y de

la magnífica película de animación de Alan Parker sigan

todavía más vigentes que nunca. Una profunda reflexión

sobre el camino equivocado que han tomado las socie-

dades modernas, según el punto de vista de Waters; un

impresionante toque de atención sobre la importancia de

los individuos libres frente a los grandes grupos de poder

y a la manipulación del establishment.

A pesar de no haber tenido un gran éxito en su primer lan-

zamiento, a partir de la caída del muro de Berlín en el 89,

The Wall se erige como símbolo mundial de la conciencia

antisistema y anti-imperialismo, traspasando culturas, lu-

gares y fronteras.

Con un impresionante stage enorme —un muro blan-

co de piezas, de 77m. de largo, sonido 3D envolvente y

un espectáculo de luces nunca visto antes— a las 22:30

aproximadamente empezaba a sonar «In the flesh»… ¡co-

menzaba el show! Las proyecciones de tramos de la peli

sobre el muro del escenario nos dejaban ojipláticos. Llegó

la 1ª parte del «Another brick in the wall», salía un grupo

de niños a corear el tema, dejándonos sin palabras y con

la lagrimilla colgando; cuando sonó «Mother», con Waters

sólo con acústica, ya había mucha gente llorando de la

emoción (increíble,¿no?). Imágenes de víctimas de con-

flictos, fichas de campos de internamiento, hasta la foto

del malogrado periodista español en Iraq —José Couso—

aparecían proyectadas en el muro, que se iba cerrando al

ir avanzando el show. La madre y la mítica mantis religiosa

de la peli también aparecieron en persona y gran formato,

y como no, el cerdo volador, todo pintarrajeado de men-

sajes anticapitalistas e anti-imperialistas —que aparece en

todos sus shows— volaba de nuevo sobre nuestras cabe-

zas, pero esta vez en vez de rosa era negro (sacad vuestras

propias conclusiones).

El concierto estuvo dividido en 2 partes, como el disco;

después de un descanso empezaba la 2ª parte con el muro

completamente levantado y el «Hey you». El pabellón

empezaba a entrar en éxtasis, cuando sonó el «Bring the

boys back home» y el «Run like hell», creo que varios de

nosotros empezamos a levitar (es broma)… y así íbamos

llegando a un final en el que con la caída del muro se ce-

rraba el show. Se acabó, The Wall había agitado nuestras

conciencias y nuestra sensibilidad de nuevo y como nunca.

Sr. Waters es usted un genio indiscutible, un maestro, un

dios, ¡¡¡gracias, gracias, gracias!!!

En fin, el mejor show que he visto en mi vida sin ninguna

duda, una obra maestra indiscutible… Si es verdad que

Dios (alguno de ellos) todavía existe, aunque personal-

mente lo dudo mucho, estaba allí seguro, segurísimo.

Counting on an impressive stage —a 77m long white wall

made of pieces, 3D surrounding sound, and a show of lights

never seen before— around 22:30h «In the flesh» started

to be heard… the show was beginning! The screening of

some film sketches at the wall of the stage kept our eyes

wide open. The first part of «Another brick in the wall»

was played accompanied by a children’s choir, which left us

speechless, and about to cry; when we heard «Mother», an

acoustic solo by Waters, there were already a lot of people

crying out of emotion (incredible, isn’t it?).

Images of victims of conflicts, concentration camp files,

even the picture of the ill-fated Spanish journalist in Iraq

—José Couso— were screened at the wall, which was

getting more and more closed as the show was finishing.

The mother and the mythic praying mantis in the film also

appeared personally and big sized, and, of course, the

flying pig. Scribbled with anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist

messages, this pig which appears in every show, was flying

again over our heads; but this time it was black instead of

pink (draw your own conclusions).

The concert was divided into two parts, like the record;

after a break the second part was starting, the wall

completely erected and the «Hey you». The audience

was beginning to experience ecstasy when «Bring the

boys back home» and «Run like hell» could be heard; I

think some of us started to levitate (joke)… and that way

we were approaching an end that closed with the fall of

the wall. It was over, The Wall had again, and as never

before, shaken our conscience and sensitivity. Thank you

so much!!!

In other words, no doubt, the best show I have ever seen

in my life, an indisputable masterpiece… If it’s true that

God (or any of them) still exists, although I personally

doubt it very much, it was there for sure.

I’ll always remember March the 26th, 2011…. The great

symphonic rock master —Mr. Roger Waters—, in Spain once

more, displaying all his magic and might in The sports hall in

the Community of Madrid.

Having already seen «The dark side of the moon», in 2007,

and countless Mega concerts like The Stones, Jamiroquai,

Iron Maiden, Yes, Police, etc, etc… one thinks one has

already seen everything, but not at all !!!

THE WALL, the conceptual masterpiece by Roger Waters

—bass player, composer, and first liner of the mythic band

Pink Floyd—, was landing in Madrid, stop of a world tour of

around 100 concerts in almost two years. HALLELUJAH!!!

It’s curious and revealing that the message from the record

and the great cartoon film by Alan Parker still remains today

more alive than ever. It’s a deep reflection on the wrong

path that modern societies have taken, from Waters’ point

of view; an impressive wake-up call on the importance

of free individuals against big power groups and the

establishment’s manipulation.

Despite not having enjoyed a great success on his first

launching, from the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, The

Wall arises as a world symbol of awareness against the

ART ¿Cómo ves la evolución de tu fotografía? Bueno, aunque

aún me queda mucho por aprender, creo que ahora pue-

do tomar fotos decentes en casi todas las situaciones.

También creo que he aprendido a elegir iluminación y

composiciones interesantes. Pero esto último sólo es debi-

do a que mi primera cámara tenia muy poca resolución y

no podía permitirme recortar las imágenes.

¿Cuándo decides dedicarte profesionalmente a la fotogra-

fía? Fue al llegar a Fuerteventura —por segunda vez, ya

que estuve viviendo un tiempo en Inglaterra— cuando

decidí dar el salto, tras pasar por un par de trabajos poco

interesantes y muy estresantes. Tomé la decisión de que si

me iban a salir canas, que al menos fuera por algo que me

diera satisfacción. Aún estoy empezando, aunque he teni-

do algunas experiencias y contactos que me dan esperan-

zas para en un futuro ganarme la vida con la fotografía.

¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo? La mayoría de las veces voy

con uno o varios bocetos de foto en mi cabeza e intento

conseguir esa toma. Aunque hay situaciones, como en el

fotoperiodismo, en las que la improvisación es lo único

que funciona. En cuanto al procesado, soy partidario de

editar yo mismo utilizando el formato RAW y herramientas

básicas, sin quitarle la esencia a la foto.

Temas preferidos… Los deportes y la música son algo que

me encanta fotografiar. Son aficiones que tengo y al unirlas

con la fotografía se duplica el disfrute. El día que consiga

cubrir un Gran Premio de Formula 1 y un concierto de Me-

tallica, me daré por satisfecho. Por otro lado, Fuerteventura

me han hecho apreciar lo reconfortante que puede llegar a

ser tomar una buena fotografía de paisaje.

¿Cómo tiene que ser una foto para que la des por buena?

Pues me tiene que decir algo. No tiene que ser técnica-

mente perfecta, ni tomada con una buena cámara. Una

de mis fotografías favoritas es una de mi hija Mia, tomada

por mi mujer Lisa, con una cámara compacta de carrete,

en el salón de nuestra casa en Inglaterra.

¿Quiénes han sido tus referentes en este arte? Pues todos y

nadie. Aprendí mucho leyendo revistas especializadas y viendo

el trabajo de muchos fotógrafos anónimos en internet. Última-

mente me ha impactado el trabajo de Javier Bragado, a quien

encontré en Facebook. Es un fotógrafo de música con un es-

tilo muy dinámico.

How do you think your photography has evolved? Well,

although I still have a lot to learn, I think now I can take decent

pictures in nearly every situation. I also think that I have learnt

to choose good light and interesting compositions. But the

latter is only due to my first camera being such a low resolution

one and the fact that I couldn’t afford to cut the images!

When do you decide to become a professional photographer?

It was when I arrived in Fuerteventura for the second time —as

I had been living in England for some time— that I decided

to jump into it, after having a couple of little interesting but

highly stressing jobs. I made the decision that if I was going

to get any white hair, at least it would be for something that

gave me a little satisfaction in return. I’m only starting, but

I’ve had some experiences and contacts that give me the

hope that someday I’ll earn a living out of photography.

How is your creative process? Are you in favour of retouching?

Most times I will have one or several sketches of a photo in

my head and I try to take that picture. Even though there are

some situations, like photojournalism, where improvisation is

the only thing that works. As far as retouching is concerned,

I am in favour of editing myself using the RAW format and

using basic tools without taking away the essence of the

shot.

Favourite subjects… Sports and music are something

that I love to photograph. They are my hobbies already,

so when I put them together with photography then the

joy is doubled. I will be completely satisfied the day that

I cover a Formula 1 GP and a Metallica concert. On the

other hand, Fuerteventura has made me appreciate how

fulfilling it can be to take a good landscape shot.

What must a picture be like for you to consider it good? It has to

say something to me. It doesn’t have to be technically perfect

or taken with a big camera. One of my favourite photos is

that of my eldest daughter Mia, taken by my wife Lisa with a

compact film camera, in our living room in England.

Who are your references in this art? Everyone and no one,

really. As I said before I learnt a lot by reading photography

magazines and watching the work by a lot of anonymous

photographers on the internet. Lately I have been impressed

by Javier Bragado’s work, whom I found in Facebook. He is

a music photographer with a very dynamic style.
