You have learned más and menos in certain expressions.

Me gusta el tenis pero me gusta más el fútbol. Te gustan las manzanas? Si, más o menos.

We also use mas / menos + adjective + qué (‘than’) to make comparisons.

COMPARATIVES

The adjectives agree with the nouns they refer to.

COMPARATIVES

The adjectives bueno, malo, viejo, and joven have irregular comparative forms. We do not use más with them.

menor (que)

COMPARATIVES

Mejor, peor, mayor, and menor have plural forms ending in -es. However, they don’t have a different feminine form:

Las hermanas de Pedro son menores que las de Juan.

COMPARATIVES

Mejor (better) is also the comparative form of bien (well), and peor (worse) also the comparative form of mal (badly).

When used in this sense, mejor and peor have only one form.

Graciela y Fabián son mejores que Susana y Gustavo en tenis.

Graciela y Fabián juegan tenis mejor que Susana y Gustavo.

COMPARISONS OF EQUALITY

To compare people or things that are equal to one another, you use:

tan + adjective + como

as + adjective + as

Ejemplos: En mi club, levanter pesas es tan popular como correr. Bailar ballet es tan difícil como bailar tango.

To say that things are not equal, you can use the negative En el club Atletico, levanter pesas no es tan popular como correr.

Bailar ballet no es tan difícil como bailar tango.

To say “as much as” or “as many as” you use:

Tanto,-a + noun + como

Tantos,-as + noun + como

As much + noun+ as

As many + noun + as

Tanto agrees in gender and number with what is being compared.

Ejemplos:

1. Hay tantas actrices en el ensayo como actors.

2. Hay tantos jóvenes como adultos.
