Fourth Sunday of Lent Page Three

Dear Friends,

Jesus was beginning his public ministry and was becoming quite a popular man. He spoke well and with authority; he healed people and expelled demons. Even the religious leaders of his time took notice and wondered who this man called “Jesus the Nazorean” was. But the religious leaders were shocked and disturbed by the company Jesus kept: he surrounded himself with known sinners. “Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and the scribes began to complain, saying ‘This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” Not only did Jesus welcome sinners, he shared meals with them, which is something more radical than just being seen with them. Sharing a meal was more than food; it was about friendship, family and kinship. Nevertheless, the criticism of the religious leaders is not so different from our own. Even by our own standards the mark of a “good” person is connected to the company they keep. Most of us would probably agree with the Pharisees and scribes if we saw a particular man or woman hanging around with the wrong crowd. This by itself should help us understand something very important: we do not see and judge as God sees and judges. To know this is awakening to new life. If we say, “No, I would not think like the Pharisees and scribes,” we are not being honest. The whole point of the Gospel is to reveal not only who God is, but also who we are. And if we are not shocked and disturbed, questioned and challenged by the Gospel, then we are not reading it correctly. We are the Pharisees and scribes, the prodigal son as well as the angry, bitter and self-righteous older son. We are the sick in need of healing, the hated tax collectors wanting to be accepted, the prostitutes seeking redemption, and even the well-meaning disciples who end up denying and abandoning Jesus in his darkest moments. But this is only part of the Gospel; the other part of the Gospel tells us that in spite of our selves we are forgiven, reconciled, healed and loved; to know and experience this is to be reborn. Like the Pharisees and Scribes most of us are shocked and disturbed not only by the company Jesus keeps, but also by the image of God the Father Jesus gives us in this parable. Is God truly this merciful and compassionate as the father in the parable? Hard to believe that God would return to me, to us, the dignity and identity that I, we, had rejected and trampled upon. As the father goes out to wait and receive his younger son, so also he does with the older son. The younger son knows his sin; his need of forgiveness and reconciliation; his desire to return to his father. The older son is not aware of his sin, of his anger and bitterness towards his brother; he is not aware of his need for reconciliation; he is blinded by his self-righteousness. He does not know he is loved by his father. Where do you see yourself in this parable?

Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF Pastor

Queridos Amigos,

FAITH FORMATION CORNER – THOUGHTS TO PONDER,WAYS TO

LIVE “No one who comes to me shall ever go hungry, no one who believes in me shall thirst again.” Jn 6:35.

Recently I heard a quip that if you are what you eat, most Americans are fast, easy and cheap. The old adage is true- -– you are what you eat and this is also true about scripture and what you put in your mind and heart. The av-erage American watches about 20 hours of TV per week and when not watching TV is on the internet shopping, scanning media platforms or listening to our music. It should not be surprising then that our values generally re-flect the entertainment industry! That’s why Jesus offers himself to us as the bread of life, the bread that comes down from heaven. And as Catholics we are blessed to have a feast of God’s nourishment, both in the Word and in the Eucharist. The Word of God in the liturgy penetrates deep, challenging us, healing our wounds, enlightening our minds, directing our steps. The Eucharist is the most sub-stantial food God offers us. We are called to be the body of Christ. Why did God give us his Body, Blood, Soul and divinity under the forms of bread and wine? Because we are what we eat! So examine your media consumption and decide how you can cut back and open up time for prayer, service and a personal relationship with others. Junk food may taste good, but it often leaves you unsat-isfied or worse, indigestion. But the Bread of Life satisfies, inspires and heals. We are made for it. As Jesus says, “No one who comes to me shall ever go hungry, no one who believes in me shall thirst again.”
